Latest list of Forbes Asia of “48 Heroes of Philanthropy” contains only four Indians and all of them are women.

These philanthropic heroes are: Anu Aga (67, Director of Thermax; Thermax donates 1 percent of its profits to charity), Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw (56, Chairman of Biocon; contributed 10 million dollars to Bangalore Cancer Center, donates 2 million dollars annually towards health insurance of villagers, committed 3 million dollars to Hyderabad Business School); Kiran Nadar (58, wife of HCL Technologies cofounder Shiv Nadar; opened an Art Museum), and Rohini Nilekani (50, Infosys investor; donated 40 million dollars over the years).

Effective treatment for cancer pain on the anvil

London, June 26 (ANI): Researchers at the Pharmacology Institute of the University of Heidelberg have found new approaches to the development and treatment of the debilitating pain suffered by cancer patients.

Professor Dr. Rohini Kuner and colleagues found two possible reasons for such pain- tumours release two signal substances that make nerve cells especially sensitive and enhance tumour growth.

In animal tests, when the researchers blocked the effect of the signal substances on the nerve cells, the sensitivity of the nerve cells and tumour growth were reduced.

The results indicated a new approach for the development of effective pain medication for cancer patients.

Cancer pain is frequently difficult to handle with conventional pain medication, such as opioids.

As high dosages are required, the side effects are immense for the patients and tolerance may quickly ensue.

“There is a great need for special pain medication for cancer patients,” Nature magazine quoted Kuner as saying.

During the study, the researchers examined tissue from mice to determine what signal substances were released by tumours.

They discovered two molecules that were previously known only as growth factors for blood-forming stem cells.

By testing nerve activity with electrodes, the researchers demonstrated that contact with these molecules made nerve cells in the vicinity of the cancer tissue considerably more sensitive to pressure.

“The findings are consistent with descriptions of cancer patients who say that merely touching the affected area is painful,” said Kuner.

Other than touching, tumour growth itself causes pain, as the expanding tissue also exerts pressure.

Apparently, the cancer cells use the growth factors for their own growth and spread through the nerve pathways and blood vessels to the rest of the organism.

The discovery opens up new prospects in the fight against cancer pain and, thus, in the next step, the researchers injected proteins (antibodies) that block the contact sites for cancer signal substances on the nerve cells.

And they observed that the sensitivity of nerve cells and tumour growth were reduced.

Further research is needed to show if this use is also possible in human tissue, and if successful, it would be conceivable to inject these “protein blockers” directly into the tumour and thus reduce pain and side effects for the patient.

The study has been published online in the prestigious journal Nature Medicine. (ANI)

Snatchers gang busted, 3 held

NEW DELHI: The special operation squad of the crime branch has arrested three men for their alleged involvement in over 15 cases of snatching. The
accused are residents of Rohini and have been identified as Bhagat Singh (19), a resident of Sector-3, Amit Kumar (19), a resident of MCD Colony, Sector-4, and Sanjeev Kumar (20), a resident of Vijay Vihar Phase-II, near Sector-4. In another case, the south district police arrested one Amit Kumar, a resident of Rohini who holds an MBA degree, for allegedly committing snatchings in the Defence Colony area.

In the former case, the police laid a trap based on a tip-off near Fountain Chowk, Rani Bagh, where the trio were to come to commit yet another crime on Friday. The police have recovered 12 mobile phones from their possession and about 15 cases of snatchings in the past three months at Prashant Vihar, Rohini and Saraswati Vihar have been solved through these arrests.

“All the accused are school dropouts and have a humble background. The money earned from snatchings has been spent in living lavishly, on girl friends and frequenting red-light areas. The receivers of stolen property and mobile phones have also been identified and we’ll arrest them soon,” said Satyendra Garg, additional commissioner of police (crime). The police said the gang targeted women travelling in rickshaws and was specially active near the Metro stations.

Meanwhile, Amit Kumar (31), who was arrested for being allegedly involved in snatchings in the Defence Colony area revealed to the police that he comes from an educated family. “He himself holds an MBA degree, has done a hotel management course and was presently working in a transport company at Madipur. He had altered the number plate of his brother-in-law’s bike to avoid being caught. Kumar took to crime to support his extravagant lifestyle,” said DCP (south) HGS Dhaliwal.

According to the police, around 1pm on Friday, two girls took a rickshaw in Defence Colony to go from D block to C Block. Kumar first approached the girls to ask for `directions’, then returned after some time to allegedly snatch one of the girls’ handbag. When the girls raised an alarm, three men one Salman and Faizan Malik who were riding a bike, and beat constable Rajesh Kumar responded to their calls. The trio reportedly chased the accused for about two kilometres and finally nabbed him.

Twins were to marry this year

NEW DELHI: “The Jain brothers always set examples for this colony. Even in their death, they have become our heroes by donating their eyes,” said
an emotional Naresh Kumar, RWA president of Laxmibai Enclave DDA flats and next-door neighbour of Luv and Manish Jain.

As the entire colony assembled outside the Jain residence on Saturday, Mahesh Jain, father of the twins, was trying to controls his tears outside the morgue at BJRM Hospital. “My sons always wanted to serve society. I respect their decision to donate their eyes,” he told Times City. The doctors first completed the donation process before conducting post-mortem as the operation has to be completed within a stipulated time.

“Luv and Manish were working at Goyal Sarees for the past five years. They had put in a lot of hard work and established a new shop at Ring Road Mall near Rohini. The shop was to be inaugurated on Saturday. My sons reached home around 2am on Saturday after making the final arrangements and were ready by 8.30am for the formal launch. It was all in vain,” said Mahesh.

The father said it was shocking to discover his sons lying lifeless on the road. “I got a call around 9.30am to reach BJRM Hospital. My youngest son, Ankit, rushed to me around the same time to tell me that there had been an accident in our neighbourhood. When I reached the spot, I found my sons lying on the ground. The policemen stood surrounding them but made no attempt to lift them…I will never forget this day,” said Jain, barely able to control his tears.

Family members said Luv was going to marry on June 26 in Haryana. “We were looking for a bride for Manish too. Since they were twins, we hoped to get both of them married in the same year,” said one of relatives.

Mahesh says he remembers the last conversation he had with Luv. “I insisted that I go and visit the new showroom, but he said that only a puja would take place on Saturday. Instead, he wanted us to visit the showroom on Sunday when everything would be functioning,” he said.

Students protest against Israeli offensive in Gaza

New Delhi, Jan 5 (ANI): Students Federation of India (SFI), students” wing of Communist Party of India (Marxist), staged protest here today against Israeli offensive in Gaza and to show solidarity with the Palestinians.

The SFI protestors blamed the United States for the Israeli attack and accused United Progressive Alliance government for not strongly condemning the attacks on Gaza.

“Media is not being permitted entry into Gaza, so we have no clue of exact number of causalities. We have come to know that some schools have also been bombed. The UN and the US have maintained a silence and everything is happening on the dictates of the US. Our UPA government is not condemning in the strong way as it should have been,” said Rohini an activist.

The demonstrators also threw their footwear at the roadside to express their anger.
