The New Yorker Hotel’s Discarded Amenities Now Recycled Into Life-Saving Tools

ORLANDO, FL, Jun 04 (MARKET WIRE) —
The New Yorker Hotel, the second hotel in New York to partner with Clean
the World, will now provide nearly 400 children annually with desperately
needed hygiene tools as part of an innovative program that recycles soap
and distributes it to impoverished people worldwide. The gently-used
amenities from the hotel’s 912 rooms will skip a trip to the landfills
and instead hit Clean the World’s Recycling Operations Center (ROCs).

“Now that we have The New Yorker Hotel on board, we are on track to open
our New York metro-area ROC,” said Peter Insalaco, Regional Director at
Clean the World. “We are thrilled to have them as part of our program.
We’re ready to bring New York to the forefront of the Clean the World
mission.”

Soap is both difficult to obtain in impoverished areas and crucial to
preventing the spread of diarrheal disease and pneumonia, two of the
biggest killers of children under age five.

With upwards of 75,000 hotel rooms in the New York area, a tremendous
amount of waste is generated from discarded hotel soap and amenities. “We
are extremely proud to help lessen needless waste and do it in a way that
also has humanitarian purpose,” said Sylvia Lima, general manager of the
New Yorker Hotel.

“The entire housekeeping department, when they heard of this tremendous
effort from Clean the World, were very excited to be a part of it,” said
Angela Sanchez, director of housekeeping.

Big-city amenities will continue to be recast with global purpose — just
ask Clean the World and The New Yorker Hotel.

Kanye West voted ‘Best Dressed Rapper of all Time’

London, May 01 (ANI): Kanye West has been voted the ‘Best Dressed Rapper of all Time’ in a new magazine poll.

The fashionable hip-hop star, who recently launched his own sneaker designs with Nike and Louis Vuitton, won the title with 77 per cent of the votes, reports the Daily Star.

The Stronger hitmaker has beaten his Roc-A-Fella Records boss Jay-Z to land the Complex magazine honour.

West is pleased to receive the title and has complimented a host of his rap peers for making hip-hop more stylish.

In his note of thanks, West says, “Man, I want to thank everybody. this is a real honour! This whole year has been so overwhelmingly positive?

“It means a lot to be able to get respect from my core and peers even though everybody knows I get a little crazy with the clothes sometimes… It’s nice to read something positive for a change! Pharrell pioneered what I do now. He was the original to break down doors between ?real fashion? and hip hop worlds, doing beats for Noreaga and running around with the model chicks.

“(Rick) Ross gets real fresh. T.I. has a great effortless sense of style. Jay(-Z) has set mad trends and is the Sinatra of our era. Nobody is as fresh as Ralph Luaren (sic) himself, only Andre 3000 and (Fonzworth) Bentley get close but there’s still work to do.

“The uphill battle we have as hip hop artist (sic) is hip hop is rooted in trends. True style and trends very seldomely (sic) meet. That’s why we have a tendency to wear stuff that’s laughable 2 years later. When I see crazy stuff I’ve worn and people laugh at me, all I can do is laugh with you and think,I had fun though. Thanks again, Mr. West,” he added. (ANI)

Suvarna tangle: With RBI nod, IOB gets cracking on April 16

Indian Overseas Bank (IOB) is all set to start its operations on April 16 with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) giving a nod to the transfer of specific assets and liabilities of the Shree Suvarna Sahakari Bank (SSSB) to the IOB.

Cooperatives Commissioner Krishna Lavhekar on Tuesday sanctioned the transfer under Section 110 (A) of the Maharashtra Cooperatives Society Act. “We got the green signal from RBI and we have issued the orders as per the act in the scheme of arrangements,” said Lavhekar. RBI had put the Pune-based cooperative bank SSSB under moratorium in September 2006, following huge non-performing assets (NPAs) non-recovery of loans and non-compliance with RBI guidelines in case of loan approvals worth Rs 436.74 crore. In November following a complaint filed by a special auditor, the chairman Dyaneshwar Agashe and several other directors of the bank were taken into legal custody following charges of financial irregularities. The bank had deposits of over Rs 700 crore and NPAs accounted for more than Rs 300 crore, primarily due to connected lending.

When contacted, chairman and managing director of IOB, SA Bhat said that if the letter is ready, then all things will go according to the plan. “We should be able to operate by April 16,” he said. On giving back depositors the money, he said that those depositors who would want to continue with us can do so and those who want to withdraw can do it after April 16.

The SSSB depositors who have been waging a two-year old battle are a relieved lot with this move. However they would wait till April 16, before jubiliations. Shrikant Limaye who leads the depositors movement, told The Indian Express that there are around two lakh depositors who have to get their money back. “The taking over and operations is a good sign. Ofcourse, we are very hopeful and with the cooperative commissioner giving the sanction, it should happen. We hope to get our money back,” he said. The depositors have their meetings on Sundays and is scheduled to have one on April 5 regarding this development. It took nearly 10 months for the IOB to get the formal sanctions to take over the assets and liabilities of the cooperative along with its branches. The approval took time following a special audit ordered by the Registrar of Companies (RoC) of the state government. RoC is the state-specific regulatory body that jointly regulates cooperative banks along with RBI.

The differences in the legal structure of IOB and a co-operative bank also further complicated the process of securing approval for the branches of the co-operative bank. The 37-year-old cooperative bank, SSB has 12 branches, nine in Pune, two in Mumbai and one in Shripur.

Naidu blames Rajasekhara Reddy for Satyam scam

Hyderabad, Jan 14 (ANI): Former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has said alleged that greediness and mania for money of the present state Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy were responsible for the fiasco of Satyam.

“This present Chief Minister has manipulated everything for his favour, for his greediness and also money,” Naidu said here on Tuesday evening.

Naidu denied that in 2002 when his party was ruling the State, it knowingly ignored a report of irregularities in Satyam’s performance.

On Tuesday, the government ordered the Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO) to probe the Satyam scandal.

Corporate Affairs Minister Prem Chand Gupta told reporters here that the SIFO would submit its report in three months.

The probe has been ordered after receiving a report from the Registrar of Companies (RoC) in Hyderabad, which inspected the books of accounts of Satyam Computer Services and eight other companies belonging to the kin of the former chairman B Ramalinga Raju.

Meanwhile, the CB-CID conducted raids at the office of the Price Waterhouse Coopers (PWC) in Hyderabad.

The CID has also reportedly taken into custody Ramakrishna, an auditor with the PWC to unravel the criminal conspiracy. (ANI)

Coming soon, a bicycle that tells riders when to change gear

Washington, Jan 14 (ANI): Taiwan researchers are developing a bicycle that would tell the riders when to change the gear.

They are designing a computer for pedal cyclists that tells them when to change gear to optimise the power they develop while maintaining comfort.

While riding a bicycle, few people know how to adjust the gears to get the most power out of their pedalling without becoming uncomfortable either through having to pedal too fast in a low gear on level roads or straining when going up hill or to maintain a high speed.

Researchers from National Defense University, Tashi, Taiwan, ROC have developed a computerised system that would tell exactly when to change gear.

They have devised a computer algorithm that gives a cyclist a gearshift strategy to cope with almost any cycling conditions and maintain this optimal state without reducing comfort.

The tests have shown that by simulation of a 12-speed bicycle provides a gear-shifting sequence with minimal power losses and gear shifts.

“By following the sequence, riders can operate the derailleur system more easily,” said the researchers.

“Riders will also feel comfortable because all gear-ratios can be used, and gear-shifting actions will be smoother,” they added.

The computer will automatically adjust to riding conditions, satisfying the human element.(ANI)

Satyam board to meet in Hyderabad today

Hyderabad, Jan 17 (ANI): The newly constituted board of Satyam Computer will meet here today to take stock of the situation arising out of Rs.7000 crore scam perpetrated by the previous board.
