Police will initiate action against Muthalik: Yeddyurappa

Bangalore / Belgaum, May 14 (ANI): Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa on Friday assured the State Police would initiate appropriate action against Sri Ram Sene chief patron Pramod Muthalik, who was caught by rent-a-riot sting operation.

On Thursday evening, a private news channel aired video clippings of a sting operation where some Sene leaders spoke about organizing a riot in return for money.

Yeddyurappa also categorically said neither his party not his government has any relationship with Muthalik and his organization.

Interacting with media, Yeddyurappa said he had never interfered in such matters and police are free to take action.

“I don”t know anything about Muthalik. I read about him in the newspaper. Police will take appropriate decision at appropriate time. We don”t interfere in such matters. Police is there, and according to law, they will take action,” Yeddyurappa said.

He also denied that the expose would have any impact on his government.

Denying charges of being soft on Muthalik, Yeddyurappa pointed that the government had taken action against the Sene after church attack incident.

In Belgaum, hitting back at the news channel for its sting operation, Muthalik filed a report at the Camp Police Station in the city on Friday.

Addressing media after filing report, Muthalik asked for a detailed inquiry into the sting operation either by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) or the Crime Investigation Department (CID).

He also alleged that the expose was an attempt to defame him and alleged criminal intimidation and extortion.

Muthalik said the rent-a-riot sting operation was part of a conspiracy to impose President”s rule in Karnataka.

He also denied of having any association with the BJP and the Karnataka Government.

He threatened to file a defamation suit.

Meanwhile, Karnataka Home Minister V.S. Acharya has asked the channel to submit unedited tapes of the sting operation to the state government.

Rashtriya Swayam Sevak Sangh (RSS) leader Ram Madhav has denied any organizational link with Muthalik and said there is no place for violence in the RSS system. (ANI)

China lifts ban on Internet services of Xianjiang after ten months

Urumqi (China), May 14 (ANI): Believe it or not, it took China ten months to restore Internet services in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

The reason given by the authorities was the instability that prevailed in the area after a riot broke out.

Xinjiang dwellers now feel that this restoration of the Internet signals a reinstatement of the State’s confidence in the social stability of the region.

The move comes as a relief for the seven million Netizens inhabiting the region, as it will end their virtual isolation.

Authorities had banned the Internet after it was discovered that separatists and rabble-rousers had used the Internet, phone calls and text messages to spread havoc.

In a document released by its press office, Xinjiang”s regional government said Internet services were “fully resumed,” meaning netizens in Xinjiang were able to browse the web, chat online and put up postings again, Xinhua reports.

Resumption of Internet services was in line with maintaining stability and boosting social and economic development in Xinjiang, as well as the residents having access to information, the document said. (ANI)

Six people charged for allegedly assaulting police

Six people have been charged after allegedly assaulting two police officers at Mornington Island in Queensland’s Gulf country.

The officers were called to a disturbance on Saturday night and attempted to arrest a woman for illegally possessing alcohol.

The officers were not seriously injured but their police car was damaged.

The group of four men and two women have been charged with a range of offences including serious assault of police, wilful damage and riot.

They are expected to appear in the Mount Isa Magistrates Court this morning.

Two more arrested over Melbourne riot

Two more people have been charged over their alleged involvement in a riot in Oakleigh, in Melbourne’s south-east just over a week ago.

Up to 2,000 people were involved in the protest which targeted a tyre company over a cancelled motor racing event.

Police say the rioters caused between $30,000 and $50,000 damage.

Two Springvale men have been charged with riotous behaviour, affray and criminal damage.

The men will face the Melbourne Magistrates Court today for a bail application.

Three others have been charged over the same incident and have been released on bail.

China still censoring Google searches

Chinese access to websites covering sensitive topics such as Tibet remains blocked despite Google’s decision to stop censoring its Chinese-language search engine.

The US web giant has announced it will no longer filter results on China-based Google.cn and will redirect mainland Chinese users to an uncensored site in Hong Kong, effectively closing down the mainland site.

But searches from Chinese mainland computers on subjects such as the 1989 Tiananmen pro-democracy protests and the outlawed spiritual group Falungong drew the message “cannot display the web page”.

While lists of results for other sensitive keywords such as “Tibet riot” and “Amnesty International” are being provided, not all the sites are accessible, showing the error message “cannot display the website”.

Websites of organisations deemed by China’s ruling Communist Party to be hostile to the nation, such as Peacehall, are also blocked.

Lucinda Barlow, the head of public affairs for Google in Australia, told ABC2 News Breakfast that China is still censoring search results.

“Unfortunately I can confirm that the Chinese government has filtered … some of the search results that are being received from Google.hk,” she said.

“So while we are offering uncensored search results, they are being filtered … which is hugely disappointing for us.”

Ms Barlow says “politically sensitive subjects” such as Tiananmen Square remain blocked.

“You can see that YouTube and Blogger, which have been blocked, remain so, and there is also some blocking of search results from google.hk,” she said.

Ms Barlow says Google has set up a website showing which services are available and which are being blocked.

“We feel we have made progress in offering some renewed access to information,” she said.

“We have also tried to be very transparent about it.”

Ms Barlow says Google does not regret the decision to operate in China.

“We went into China in 2006 and it was a very difficult decision that we made at that time, which was to offer compromised, censored search results for people in mainland China,” she said.

“We felt at the time that it was better to offer some access to information, albeit in a compromised way, than not be there at all.

“In January of this year we announced that there had been some cyber attacks on Google … and surveillance of Gmail accounts of human rights activists involved in China.

“Those two events, as well as what we felt was increased restrictions on freedom of speech, have resulted in us coming to this decision yesterday.”

Trio charged over Melbourne riot given bail

A Melbourne magistrate has granted bail to three men who have admitted taking part in last Friday’s riot at Oakleigh, in the city’s south-east, that caused $50,000 damage.

Nineteen-year-olds Jack Corben and Jordan Black handed themselves in this morning after police contacted their families.

They are charged with affray and destroying property.

The court heard Black used a baseball bat to smash a window at a Bob Jane T-mart store while Corben kicked the window.

Police told the court the pair’s actions incited the crowd of about 2,000 people to riot.

Earlier, Maxwell Lawson, 21, was released on bail after police told the court he helped destroy a window and overturn a utility.

Police are still looking at surveillance footage from the scene.

Two more questioned over weekend riot

Two men have handed themselves in to police over Friday night’s riot in Oakleigh, in Melbourne’s south-east.

The men are being interviewed at the Frankston Police Station.

Up to 2,000 people were involved in the protest targeting the tyre company that cancelled a motor racing event.

The police air wing, dog squad were called in when protesters tried to smash the windows of the Bob Jane Tmart store.

A third man, 21-year-old Maxwell Lawson of Narre Warren, has been charged with affray and destroying the shop front window.

He appeared in court today and was granted bail.

Police told the court the gathering was organised up to week before by text messages and social networking websites, because the protesters were angry a drag racing event had been cancelled.

A magistrate ordered that Maxwell abide by a curfew between 9pm and 6am and report to police twice a week.

Police say the rioters caused between $30,000 and $50,000 damage.

Gujarat High Court asks Nanavati Commission to clarify on summoning Modi

Gandhinagar, Mar 22 (ANI): The Gujarat High Court on Monday asked Justice Nanavati Commission which is probing the 2002 post-Godhra riot cases, whether it would summon State Chief Minister Narendra Modi.

The High Court issued the notice to Nanavati Commission through the state’s Advocate General to reply to the court in this regard by April 1.

The Court gave instructions while hearing a petition filed by the Jan Sangharsh Manch, which represents the victims of the 2002 riots.

In April 2007, the JSM had moved an application before the Nanavati Commission demanding that Modi be summoned for questioning, but the commission has not called Modi for questioning.

Earlier this month, the Supreme Court-appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT) summoned Modi for questioning in connection with the Gulburg Society carnage, but Modi failed to show up before the commission. (ANI)

‘Frustrated youths’ gain support after racing riot

Australia’s drag racing association says the Victorian Government must bear some responsibility for fuelling the frustrating of motor sports fans, following a riot in Melbourne’s south-east.

On Saturday night, about 2,000 people took to the streets of Oakleigh to protest against the cancellation of the Easternats car racing event.

Police say the peaceful gathering turned ugly after some people in the group started smashing the windows of a tyre dealership and setting off flares.

Police were called in about 11:30pm (AEDT) when the protest turned violent.

They have called on those responsible to hand themselves in and say they are examining video footage.

The Australian National Drag Racing Association (ANDRA) says the State Government should invest in a new drag racing facility.

The association’s Gary Miocevich says the weekend violence is unacceptable, but more needs to be done for car racing enthusiasts.

“They’re youths that are frustrated because the Government hasn’t provided them with a safe and legal environment in which they can play with their cars,” he said.

“Now ANDRA supports that and ANDRA has been working with the Victorian Government for three and a half years to secure a new facility for drag racing and other motor-related sports.”

The promoter of the event, Jon Davison, feels the behaviour was unacceptable, but says there is a need for these events.

“Last night’s frustration, even though it was unacceptable, was indicative that there was quite a demand, there’s a need to get these kids off the street and give them an expression session,” he said.

Thousands riot over Easternats cancellation

Police say up to 2,000 people were involved in a protest that turned into a riot at a tyre shop in Oakleigh in Melbourne’s south-east.

Racing fans had gathered at the intersection of the Princes Highway and Warrigal Road to protest over the cancellation of the Easternats race meet.

They were targeting Bob Jane, the tyre company that sponsored the event.

Easternats organisers say Bob Jane cancelled the event after failing to finalise contract negotiations.

Police were called in about 11:30pm (AEDT) when the protest turned violent.

Acting Assistant Commissioner Neville Taylor says the event started peacefully, before people started smashing windows and damaging a car.

“At one particular time, some person decided it would be smart to throw a flare towards one of our police officers, and this has really sparked the riotous behaviour,” he said.

“We had about 50 police units that were in attendance in response to this, and our aim was about dispelling that crowd, to maintain the community safety.”

He says police have video footage of what happened.

“We’ve got some very good footage of that riot that took place there, so they’ll be aiming to identify probably the key people who were involved in the actual behaviour in the riot, as well as the large crowd that was there,” he said.

It is believed tyres and other items were also stolen.

Traffic was stopped at the intersection for two hours, and members of the air wing, dog squad and force response units were brought in to disperse the crowd.

No major injuries have been reported.

Police have called on those responsible to hand themselves in.

VHP leader Togadia released, denied entry to Kandhamal

Bhubaneswar, Mar 20 (ANI): Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader Praveen Togadia, who was arrested last night for attempting to enter riot-hit Kandhamal district, was released early Saturday.

Togadia was stopped at Charichhak in Boudh district as he tried to enter Kandhamal, despite a ban imposed by the district administration on his entry.

He was booked under Section 151 of the CrPc to prevent breach of peace in the area.
Terming the ban as illegal, he said, it was not fair on the part of the State Government to put a restriction on his visit.

Meanwhile, the VHP has called for 12-hour Kandhamal shutdown today in protest against the administration”s move to bar Togadia from entering Kandhamal. (ANI)

Katie Price gets caught in a brawl at cage fighting event

London, September 7 (ANI): Hottie Katie Price was caught in a brawl, and got floored by gipsy bare-knuckle boxers, while watching a cage fighting event with her new lover Alex Reid.

The cage fighter, too, got hit in the face at the Extreme Brawl event in West London on Saturday.

It was apparently a group of gipsy bare-knuckle fighters who had been drinking all evening, and started the tussle with Reid.owever, one of the knuckle fighters insisted that Reid had “asked for it”.

“He wound me up. He’s an arrogant w***** who was walking around like he owned the place. We had a problem with him and were going to sort it out but he chickened out. He deserves to get his head kicked in,” the Sun quoted him as saying.

The couple were among spectators watching the Extreme Brawl event at the Radisson Edwardian Heathrow Hotel in Hayes, West London.

The fight soon turned into a riot like situation, according to Price’s friend who was also present.

However, the couple were escorted out of the hotel, and into waiting cars as fighting spilled on to the pavement.

“The fight broke out because some gipsies were winding up Alex. He didn’t retaliate but people he was with got involved. It turned into a riot,” the pal said.

A source said: “Suddenly there was this loud row and people started shoving each other and punches were thrown.”

The event organiser and Mixed Martial Art promoter Andy Jardine briefed how the fight broke out.

“Unfortunately these guys had some argument with Alex. One of the fighters fancied his chances and wanted to prove himself by offering Alex outside, which was a stupid thing to do,” he said.

“He said he wanted to fight Alex and Alex said, ‘I’m not being funny, but you’ve just had your first fight and lost and I’ve fought some of the best in the world’.

“He didn’t like that answer and the fight started there. The security team were involved. Everyone was grappling with each other. They got everyone outside and some people’s shirts came off.

“Alex isn’t fazed about it at all. He doesn’t need it but it doesn’t bother him,” he added.

Though police responded fast to the situation, no arrests were made.

The police said: “We responded to reports of a fight at the Radisson at around 11.50pm on Saturday. There were no complaints and no arrests.” (ANI)

Pak Govt asked to review blasphemy law

Islamabad, Sep. 2 (ANI): The Pakistan Government has been asked by the National Assembly Standing Committee on Human Rights to re-examine the blasphemy law so that incidents like Gojra’s anti-Christian riot can be prevented.

Human Rights Ministry Secretary Farid Khan told Committee chairman PML-Q member Riaz Fatiyana that the Gojra incident reflected “a complete failure of our system.”

The Daily Times quoted Punjab Human Rights Minister Kamran Michael as saying that the government should review the blasphemy law.

He said the law should also be used against those who levelled baseless allegations against others.

PML-N leader Javed Hashmi seconded Michael’s views, and said he regretted that people were languishing in jails for the last eight to ten years under the blasphemy law.

Fatiyana said the killings were a failure on the part of administration and intelligence agencies. He urged the government to take measures to prevent such incidents in the future.

He added that the committee will meet Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, and request him to fix a time period for trial of people arrested under blasphemy law.

Pakistan’s blasphemy law forbids-damaging a place of worship or a sacred object, outraging religious feelings, defiling the Quran and defaming Prophet Mohammed.

The Criminal Code provides penalties for blasphemy up to death and a fine.

Critics have pointed out that the blasphemy law is being used to victimise minorities. (ANI)

Xinjiang separatists are doomed to fail, says Chinese President

Uygur (China), Aug. 26 (ANI): Chinese President Hu Jintao, who made his first trip to the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region since last month’s deadly riot, has warned the separatists that they are “doomed to fail”.

The July 5 riot, which killed 197 people and injured more than 1,600, were masterminded by the “three forces” of terrorism, separatism and extremism both at home and abroad, he said.

“The separatists don’t have the people’s hearts and are doomed to fail. Their sabotage activities will not shake the stable development of reforms in Xinjiang,” China Daily quoted Hu, as saying.

The president promised that more solid measures would be taken to beef up economic growth and social development in Xinjiang, and to improve the living and production conditions of the people of various ethnic groups.

Hu congratulated the armed forces, militia and police for their role in ending the July 5 riot in Urumqi, saying: “The key to our work in Xinjiang is to properly handle development and stability.”

He added that the success in quelling the riot and maintaining stability in Xinjiang fully demonstrated the power of the Party and the people as well as the strength of solidarity among ethnic groups in Xinjiang.

“Neither will they (separatists) sway the Xinjiang people’s determination to build a prosperous and harmonious socialist Xinjiang,” he said. (ANI)

Pietersen vows to keep on battling the Aussies

Cardiff (Wales), July 12 (ANI): Kevin Pietersen has told his shell-shocked England team-mates they must stand up and be counted today to prove they can handle an intense summer of Aussie pressure.

“We’ve put ourselves under a hell of a lot of pressure and it’s up to us to stand up and be counted now,” News of The World quoted Pietersen, as saying.

“We have to try and avoid being rolled over ourselves and being beaten by an innings. We need to make a big statement that we are going to fight and fight and fight for the rest of the summer.

Otherwise it will be a long one. This isn’t the most important Test match of the summer but we have to try and fight in order to make that statement,” he added.

England need to bat for 90 overs in Cardiff to salvage the opening Npower Test after an insipid display in the field over the past two days allowed Australia’s batsmen to run riot.

Pietersen, not out overnight alongside captain Andrew Strauss, stands between Ricky Ponting’s team and a humiliating sixth Ashes defeat on the spin for England.

With Ravi Bopara and Alastair Cook already back in the hutch, the home side still need 220 more runs just to make the tourists bat again.

KP knows the Aussies will not let up if they spot any sign of weakness. He knows if the Three Lions do not toughen up soon they can expect more of the same over the next 10 weeks.

“It’s going to be very, very hard because they have some fantastic bowlers and if the wicket is turning then life won’t be easy. But I believe we have it in us. I’m not going to say we will do it or we won’t but one thing is for sure: The pressure is going to be here for the rest of the summer,” he said. (ANI)
