I’m cursed, says disappointed Rio Ferdinand

London, June 6 (IANS) England football capitan Rio Ferdinand, who was ruled out of the World Cup by a last moment injury, feels he has been ‘cursed’.

Ferdinand damaged his left-knee ligaments during training after tackling Emile Heskey and catching his studs in the turf, reports thesun.co.uk.

Ferdinand’s agent and long-time friend Pini Zahavi, told Sunsport: ‘Rio said, ‘I think somebody cursed me’. That is honestly how he feels. Rio is very down. He cannot understand why this has happened to him.’

Shocked players heard Ferdinand scream in agony as he collapsed to the ground on Friday.

Ferdinand has been replaced by Tottenham strike Michael Dawson.

Beckham rallies England squad to win World Cup for Brit soldiers in Afghanistan

London, May 26(ANI): England footballer David Beckham has called on Fabio Capello’s men to secure World Cup glory in South Africa to honour the British soldiers serving in Afghanistan.

Beckham, who was recently in Afghanistan for a surprise visit to boost the morale of thousands of British troops serving in the country, delivered a dressing room speech to his England team-mates before Monday’s friendly 3-1 victory over Mexico.

England captain Rio Ferdinand said that Beckham told the squad to be inspired by the troops in Afghanistan.

“Becks came in the changing room and he was talking about his trip. He told us about the experience he had going over there and what is was really like. He said the lads do a great job for us,” The Mirror quoted Ferdinand, as saying.

“It is great that we are getting support from the boys in Afghanistan. With them being so far away they probably think we don”t really care about what is going on, but we do,” he added.

Earlier, Beckham, who is recovering from an Achilles-tendon injury, had spoken about his respect for the armed forces.

“I have nothing, but admiration for these young men and women and it makes me very proud to be British,” Beckham said.

Britain has around 10,000 troops in Afghanistan as part of an international force, largely fighting the Taliban. (ANI)

No intention of playing for England after World Cup: Carragher

London, May 20 (ANI): Liverpool veteran Jamie Carragher, who is only making a World Cup comeback because England needs him, has no intention of carrying on with the team after the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Carragher, 32, who quit England three years ago, said it will be South Africa and out again and that he only agreed to take part because of injuries.

Relaxing at England’s training camp high in the Austrian mountains, Carragher realised that his time as a player was fast running out, The Sun reports.

“I’ve been playing football since I was five years of age and in another five years I’ll probably never kick a football for the rest of my life.

“This is the chance to play at the highest level again plus, equally important, to work with this manager. Over the past 10 years Mr Capello has been the stand-out manager in world football,” The Sun quoted Carragher, as saying.

Carragher retired as an international because he was fed-up playing all over the globe as a member of the squad. It was time to concentrate on Liverpool.

He is again in the same position as he was at the last World Cup, behind John Terry and Rio Ferdinand for the central defensive positions and a reserve right back.

Carragher’s reincarnation is all the more surprising because he wrote in his autobiography how Liverpool was more important to him than England, The Sun reports.

He also told how his missed penalty in the 2006 World Cup quarter-final shootout against Portugal did not matter in the same way it would had he missed for his club.

“The stuff I mentioned in my book wasn’t so much a slight on England, it was more that Liverpool means that much to me. But I couldn’t complain if there wasn’t a great reaction against Mexico at Wembley on Monday,” he said. (ANI)

‘Unfancied’ Wigan can halt Chelsea’s title charge: Ferdinand

London, May 7 (ANI): Manchester United’s ace defender Rio Ferdinand has tried to increase pressure on table toppers Chelsea by saying that Wigan can halt the Blues’ Premier League title charge at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

The England defender hopes to play some part against Stoke as he returns from groin and back problems.

“It’s been an exciting season. More so-called lesser teams on paper have been taking points off the top four,” The Sun quoted Ferdinand, as saying.

“In previous seasons it’s been a case of the big teams beating all the others and then dropping points against each other. It’s been a weird season. Hopefully that’ll bode well for Chelsea’s game,” he said.

Ferdinand’s team-mate Edwin van der Sar said it will be strange going into the final game with their fate out of their hands after being champions for the past three years.

He knows that the mood at Old Trafford could change very quickly if they hear some positive news from Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

“It is very strange. In the last three years we have been in command. Now we have to wait. It is going to be difficult. We have lost a lot of games this year but we are still in there. Hopefully Wigan will go for it on Sunday and we will hear some positive news,” Van der Sar said. (ANI)

Wayne Rooney brushing up his cooking skills

London, May 3 (ANI): Footballer Wayne Rooney is brushing up his cooking skills by tuning into BBC1 show Saturday Kitchen.

The 24-year-old footie is so obsessed with the cookery program that he Sky Pluses the show and watches it later in the week.

James Martin presents Saturday Kitchen. Teammates Rio Ferdinand and Ryan Giggs own restaurants, but for Rooney it””s all about the cooking, reports The Sun.

“When he watches the show he pauses it so he can cook along with the guest chefs. Wayne””s getting very good in the kitchen,” a source said.

Rooney was recently named the PFA Player of the Year 2010. (ANI)

Ferdinand set for Sunderland return

London, Apr 28(ANI): Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has declared himself fit to return from injury for his club’s Premier League game against Sunderland on Sunday.

Ferdinand has missed the last two games due to a groin strain, which was the latest in a succession of injury problems that have plagued the centre-half all season, The Sun reports.

The 31-year-old had earlier missed major parts of the season with a back problem.

The Red Devils desperately need to win their penultimate game to keep themselves in the title race and hope Chelsea slip up at Liverpool to give them a boost. (ANI)

England footballers may hire guards to protect mansions from Away Day Robbers

London, Apr 27 (ANI): England footballers have been asked to hire guards to protect their WAGS and families at home while they are playing in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Ace players, including skipper Rio Ferdinand, could spend up to six weeks in South Africa for the World Cup, and this makes their mansions easy targets for a gang dubbed the “Away Day Robbers”.

At least 20 players’ pads have been raided in the North West, including Liverpool’s Steven Gerrard’s when he was playing at away games, The Sun reports.

Professional Fotballers Association chief Gordon Taylor said: “We’ve had families being intimidated, if not attacked, particularly when it’s known players are at games.

“Everybody will know those who are in South Africa,” he added. (ANI)

Wenger backs Campbell to make it to England squad

London, Apr 26 (ANI): Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has backed centre-back Sol Campbell to make a sensational return to the England squad for the 2010 World Cup.

Campbell, 35, won the last of his 73 caps more than two years ago and has never been selected by England coach Fabio Capello.

Yet Campbell, who only returned to Arsenal on a free transfer in January, is in great form and was outstanding against Manchester City in Saturday’s 0-0 draw at the Emirates.

Asked whether Campbell could be in the squad for South Africa, Wenger said: “I just see that many centre-backs are injured, so why not? He’s got the experience and it’s up to Capello to decide. He was at the game against Manchester City. Ask him!”

“Of course, John Terry and Rio Ferdinand have an advantage because they are younger. But if they have a problem in numbers, Sol’s always there,” The Sun quoted Wenger, as saying.

“I do not select the team and I do not say Capello has to take him, I just say you compare him today in the Premier League with the other centre-backs and he doesn’t suffer in the comparison. He has been very, very good,” he said.

“I’m very happy for Sol, excited because everybody was surprised that I signed him and I’m just happy I have done it. I believe it is fantastic to see how well he has come back. When he has his mind on the game he is unbelievable,” the Gunners boss added.

Campbell, who has featured in six major tournaments for England, last played for his country in the Wembley defeat against Croatia which ended hopes of reaching the Euro 2008 finals. (ANI)

Vinnie Jones plans remake of cult soccer movie ‘Escape To Victory’

London, April 24 (ANI): British footballer-turned-actor Vinnie Jones is said to be planning a big-budget remake of cult soccer movie ‘Escape To Victory’.

Jones, 45, is hoping to use his contacts within the game to lure star players including David Beckham, Thierry Henry, Cristiano Ronaldo, Rio Ferdinand, and Lionel Messi to join his next project.

The actor wants to remake the 1981 movie, which starred Michael Caine and an array of top footballers – including Pele and former England captain Bobby Moore – as World War II POWs who take part in a propaganda-led match.

Jones aims to update the film by setting it in Afghanistan or Iraq – and hopes interest in the remake will rocket after the World Cup in South Africa this summer.

“We’re in pre-production, and I’m in the process of buying the rights to the title off Paramount films, so hopefully you’ll be able to see it in cinemas by Christmas,” the Daily Express quoted him as writing in his column for Loaded magazine.

“I’ll be in it, of course, but I’ll also be producing it, which is more exciting.

“The names being bandied around include Henry, Rio, Beckham, Wayne Rooney, Ronaldo, and Messi.

“I can tell you that I’ve approached some of the biggest names in world soccer… Is Beckham going to be involved? I certainly hope so,” he wrote.

And Jones has even devised a plan to accommodate Beckham’s Achilles tendon injury, which ruled him out of the World Cup.

“If Becks agrees, we’ll write it into the film that the enemy crock him, because he wouldn’t be fit for filming,” he added. (ANI)

Rio Ferdinand has splashed out on a garden gnome, and had his own face painted on it.

New Delhi, Mar 29 (ANI): The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed a petition filed by the Republican Party of India (RPI) leader Ramdas Athawale, saying the first meeting of Parliament each year could not be necessarily considered as its first session.

Athawale had challenged Lok Sabha Speaker”s decision to treat the first meeting of the House in January 2004 as the continuation of the winter session, which was adjourned sine die on December 23, 2003.

The RPI leader in his petition had challenged that despite the winter session being adjourned, it could not be termed as continuation when it met again in the New Year in the month of January.

He had contended that the meeting of the House for the first time in each year has to be considered as the first sitting of Parliament requiring the address by the President to both the Houses.

The government had then opposing the petition contended that there was no substance in it as the Speaker had then itself decided the issue by citing case laws. (ANI)

Ferdinand presents wife, sons with garden gnome with his own face painted on it

London, Mar.29 (ANI): Rio Ferdinand has splashed out on a garden gnome, and had his own face painted on it.

The Manchester United and England ace bought the figure to cheer up his family while he is on World Cup duty in South Africa.

He then ordered three more with the faces of wife Rebecca, 29, and sons Lorenz, three, and Tate, one.

The gnomes, complete with fishing rods and toadstools, are on show at the millionaire star”s home in Alderley Edge, Cheshire, the Sun reports.

An Old Trafford source said: “The WAGs aren”t invited, so Rio got the gnomes so his sons can see his face while he”s away.” (ANI)

Defenders key to Man U’s Champions League dream

London, Mar 29 (ANI): Manchester United ace player Gary Neville believes the key to the club’s Champions League dream lies in the hands of defenders.

Rooney’s devastating form has had defences from Moscow to Milan shaking. Yet it has been the foundations laid down by the Red Devils’ miserly defence, which has set the platform for their glory bid.

Old Trafford fans are praying Rio Ferdinand is back for tomorrow’s last-eight tie at Bayern Munich. The England skipper sat out the 4-0 win at Bolton on Saturday.

Neville knows how important Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic are in Europe and in the Premier League, The Sun reports.

“Our defensive unit will play a big part in the run-in. Having Nemanja and Rio available in central defence is a big plus for us, as is having Edwin van der Sar in goal. We have not had a solid defence all season because of injuries and keeping the spine of the team fit will be crucial towards the end,” he said.

“Ferdinand and Vidic, in particular, are players we need because we don’t concede a lot when they are together. We always feel we can score goals, we just have to make sure we don”t make defensive mistakes and concede,” Neville said.

United have conceded just two goals in their last eight games.

And they received a massive boost ahead of the Germany trip with the news that Arjen Robben, Bayern’s star performer this season, is a doubt due to a calf injury.

Neville added: “We are happy to have the second leg against Bayern at home. It worked well for us against AC Milan and our form at Old Trafford has been very good. (ANI)

Ashley Cole’s newest secret liaison – music

London, March 23 (ANI): English footballer Ashley Cole has another secret liaison – to music.

The Chelsea star teamed up with rapper 50 cent on a track for the film ‘Dead Man Running’, which he co-produced with Rio Ferdinand.

“He”s a good guy, man. We”ve only worked together twice but the time I”ve been around him he”s been a gentleman,” the Sun quoted Fiddy as saying.

“He”s passionate about music. We wrote a song together for the Dead Man Running soundtrack.

“We created an idea on set and it was in the film,” Fiddy added. (ANI)

No Premier League title let-up for Man U, assures Ferguson

London, Mar 22 (ANI): Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has said that there will be no title let-up as his club moved four points clear of Chelsea at the top of the Premier League points tally.

Ji Sung Park’s header gave United a 2-1 win against Liverpool while the Blues were held 1-1 at Blackburn on Sunday.

“We’re at the stage of the season where winning is the name of the game. We have been very consistent in the last few months. I don’t think anyone’s getting away. We are all knocking on the door.

“But I think that with Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand looking fresh, after being out for most of the season, it gives us a great opportunity,” The Sun quoted Ferguson, as saying.

In the closest title race for years, Arsenal sit between United and Chelsea, two points off the top. Defeat for Liverpool was a big blow in their quest to make the top four.

Ferguson added: “For periods of the game we played very well, other periods we had to dig in and concentrate. It’s always difficult to fall behind and win. It’s a great quality which Manchester United have.

“I was disappointed with their goal. Torres was unmarked and we didn’t defend it very well. But my players recovered from it and that’s the important thing.” (ANI)

Man U keeper launches Neighbourhood Watch scheme to keep team-mates safe

London, Mar. 20 (ANI): In a bid to keep his team-mates safe from armed gangs, Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin Van der Sar has set up a Neighbourhood Watch scheme.

Under the scheme, the Holland stopper has urged all neighbours at housing development in Alderley Edge, Cheshire, to look out for each other and check up on one another.

The footie ace has become ultra security conscious after an armed gang struck the home of Utd midfielder Darren Fletcher last year.

Rio Ferdinand, Patrice Evra and a host of other soccer stars live at Alderley Edge, Cheshire.

“Edwin has set up this unofficial neighbourhood watch scheme which not only covers his team-mates and their wives but also his nearby neighbours,” The Sun quoted a source, as saying.

“They will all look out for each other and check up on one another,” he added.

The 39-year-old, 6ft 5in goalkeeper has taken to patrolling the posh neighbourhood following a series of raids on the homes of north west based Premier League players.

“Edwin wants to put an end to the fear among his team-mates from armed gangs targeting their homes,” the source said.

“Some of the players and especially the WAGs have been living in constant fear. They are petrified that they will become the gang””s next victim,” he added. (ANI)

Fergie brands FA chiefs as dysfunctional and biased

London, Mar.20 (ANI): Manchester United coach Alex Ferguson has branded FA”s disciplinary chiefs as ”dysfunctional” and implied they were biased in the wake of Steven Gerrard”s let-off for elbowing Portsmouth”s Michael Brown.

That ruling came just two months after Manchester United star Rio Ferdinand landed a four-match ban for a similar incident.

The Sun quoted Ferguson, as saying: “I didn”t expect him (Gerrard) to be charged simply because it is a dysfunctional unit at the FA. I don”t think they know what they are doing. You just scratch your head at some of these decisions, there is no consistency.”

“But I certainly think if it was a Manchester United player he would have been done – as was the case with Rio Ferdinand,” he added.

Fergie wants more ex-bosses involved in the disciplinary process.

He added: “I wonder if it”s worth exploring some managers who don”t have a job at the moment taking over that department.” (ANI)

Ferguson backs experienced players to grab record title for United

London, Mar 16(ANI): Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson reckons his experienced players will carry the club to a record 19th title.

With just eight games left in the Premier League, Ferguson is banking on the know-how of his multi-medal winners including Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Gary Neville and Rio Ferdinand.

“Experience will certainly be crucial. The lads who have been there and done it before will help us,” The Sun quoted Ferguson, as saying.

“Their know-how will be very important for us as the season gets really interesting. There”s a big programme of games coming up and we”ll be making changes when we need to,” he added.

Victory in the league this season will not only mean United go ahead of Liverpool and stand alone with 19 titles, but they will also become the first English club to win four titles in a row.

“It would be a fantastic achievement. The opportunity is there for us and we are all aware of that,” Ferguson said.

“I have set us a title target: Win every game between now and the end of the season! Obviously it”s a big ask, but that”s what we must aim for,” he added. (ANI)

‘Injury plagued’ Ferdinand hopes to get his career back on track

London, Mar 5(ANI): England skipper Rio Ferdinand hopes to get his career back on track on Saturday, as he resumes his club duties with Manchester United.

Ferdinand has declared himself free of back injury, which had cast a shadow over his preparations for this summer”s World Cup finals, and will play in the Premier League game against Wolves.

He was due to return to action against West Ham two weeks ago, but he felt a twinge in his back, which also ruled him out of the Carling Cup final and England”s win over Egypt.

“This latest problem has only been a minor setback. It”s just been precautionary, me not playing, to make sure it doesn”t get any worse. But I”m fine now, no pain, so I”m cool,” The Sun quoted Ferdinand, as saying.

“It was decided it was best for me to stay in Manchester and train, rather than with England,” he added.

The 31-year-old had earlier said that he would get “very disappointed” if his team does not make it to the World Cup final.

“You don”t play just to get a cap or to be there. You play to win and to achieve something, and if I was to finish my career with England and not even to have got to a final, I”d be very disappointed,” Ferdinand had said. (ANI)

Capello warns WAGs World Cup in South Africa is no holiday

London, Sep 11 (ANI): England coach Fabio Capello has laid down strict laws for WAGs, and is determined that team takes the World Cup in South Africa seriously.

England’s last trip to the World Cup finals turned into a circus when the WAGs took over the picturesque town of Baden Baden in Germany. There were parties every night and the players were in almost daily contact with their loved ones.

Capello insisted that his stars will not go to the tournament for a holiday, and warned their wives and girlfriends: “If you don’t like it, don’t come.”

Capello has ruled that his current squad can have just one day with their partners and families after each game next summer. And that will be the only socialising allowed.

The 63-year-old Italian, whose team qualified for the finals, said: “I hope this period that we are at the World Cup will be very long. The players will have one day with their family, with the girls and friends. It will be one day a week, after each game and that is enough. That’s it.”

Asked if there was any danger it could be like Baden Baden, Capello replied: “No, absolutely not. Please. If they do not want to come for the day, then they should stay home. I like what we’ve had at training where the players stay together. We are going there to play, not for a holiday.”

Stars like Rio Ferdinand and Frank Lampard have admitted the WAGs’ presence affected the team under Sven Goran Eriksson in the 2006 World Cup, where Portugal won their quarterfinal on penalties, The Sun reports.

Some of the WAGs have started planning for South Africa, checking accommodation in Rustenburg, England’s most likely training base. (ANI)
