Land Rover launches ‘world’s toughest phone’

London, July 3 (ANI): Land Rover has unveiled what it claims to be the world’s strongest phone, after the gadget survived being dropped from a tall building, stood on by an elephant, and roasted in an oven.

Called the new S1 mobile, the ‘indestructible’ device was developed after the car giant teamed up with phone manufacturer Sonim.

During durability tests, the phone was run over with a Land Rover, submerged in mud, and had an elephant stand on it.

Aimed at appealing to builders and workmen, the S1 features up to 1,500 hours of battery life, a 2.0 megapixel camera, and an extra loud ringtone to be heard over the sound of heavy machinery.

Tesco launched the phone with a price tag of 249.99 pounds, and are so confident it can’t be broken that it comes with an unconditional three-year guarantee.

However, staff at British tabloid The Sun managed to crush the S1 under the weight of a three-tonne forklift truck.

The phone, however, did survive being roasted in an oven at 150 degrees centigrade, soaked in a pint of lager and tossed from the second floor of a building. (ANI)

Barack Obama desperately looking for duck-quack ringtone for his blackberry!

London, July 1 (ANI): US President Barack Obama seems to be looking for duck-quack ringtone for his blackberry ever since the bird’s sound from a reporter’s phone interrupted his recent speech.

Obama was giving a talk on homosexuality and civil rights, when he had to pause for the duck-quacking ringtone.

“Whose – whose duck is back there?” the Daily Star quoted a stunned Obama as saying.

First Lady Michelle Obama confirmed by saying: “It’s a duck.”

Immediately the room of reporters burst into laughter and a composed Obama asked: “Where do you guys get these ringtones, by the way? I’m just curious.”

The embarrassed reporter had to then put the phone on to silent mode as Obama continued with his speech. (ANI)

Beethoven’s ‘elusive’ Fur Elise identified by music expert

London, Jul 1 (ANI): The identity of the lady that German composer and pianist Ludwig van Beethoven had composed his music after has been revealed by a music expert.

Für Elise, meaning ‘For Elise’, is one of Beethoven’s best-known melodies, a mainstay of piano lessons for generations and a ringtone on millions of mobile phones.

Scholars were puzzled for years over the identity of the lady, and they were further hampered by the loss of the original manuscript.

But now Klaus Martin Kopitz, a German musicologist and Beethoven expert, believes he has identified the woman of the title as Elisabeth Rockel.

Rockel was a German soprano and sister of Joseph August Rockel, a tenor who was conducted by the composer in Fidelio in 1806.

She was part of Beethoven’s inner circle, according to Kopitz, and later married his friend and rival, the composer Johann Nepomuk Hummel.

In an article to be published by the Beethoven-Haus museum in Bonn next year, Kopitz asserts that she was also known by the name Elise, an entry in the records of St Stephen’s Cathedral, Vienna, refers to her as “Maria Eva Elise”.

“It is known that, when Beethoven wrote the piece in 1810, the two enjoyed a close friendship,” the Telegraph quoted Kopitz as saying.

“Röckel related how, during a dinner party, Beethoven ‘would pinch my arm out of sheer affection’,” he said.

It was also known that, shortly before his death in 1827, she obtained a lock of his hair and was presented with one of his last quills.

If Kopitz’s theory turns out right, he will have put to rest a number of previous theories, including that the title of the lost manuscript had been misread and originally referred to Theresa Malfatti, a woman Ludwig van Beethoven had pursued. (ANI)

Mobile phone ringtones can impair recall

Washington, May 30 (ANI): Just the ring of a cell phone can pose a dangerous distraction for drivers, especially when it comes in a classroom setting or includes a familiar song as a ringtone, says a new study.

“In any setting where people are trying to acquire knowledge and trying to retain that information in some way, a distraction that may just seem like a common annoyance to people may have a really disruptive effect on their later retention of that information,” said the study’s lead author, Jill Shelton, a postdoctoral psychology fellow in Arts and Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis.

The study in the Journal of Environmental Psychology includes an experiment in which Shelton poses as a student seated in the middle of a crowded undergraduate psychology lecture and allows a cell phone in her handbag to continue ringing loudly for about 30 seconds.

Students exposed to a briefly ringing cell phone scored 25 percent worse on a test of material presented before the distraction.

Volunteers tested later scored about 25 percent worse for recall of course content presented during the distraction, even though the same information was covered by the professor just prior to the phone ring and projected as text in a slide show shown throughout the distraction. Students scored even worse when Shelton added to the disturbance by frantically searching her handbag as if attempting to find and silence her ringing phone.

“Many of us consider a cell phone ringing in a public place to be an annoying disruption, but this study confirms that these nuisance noises also have real-life impacts,” Shelton said.

“These seemingly innocuous events are not only a distraction, but they have a real influence on learning,” the expert added.

Titled “The distracting effects of a ringing cell phone: An investigation of the laboratory and the classroom setting,” the study was conducted at Louisiana State University.

The study found that unexpected exposure to snippets of a popular song, such as those often used as ringtones, can have an even-longer-lasting negative impact on attention.

Thus, people who use popular songs as a personal ringtone may be increasing the odds their cell phone rings will be more distracting. (ANI)
