Jumbos enjoy a day off at a wildlife sanctuary in West Bengal

Jalpaiguri, Sep 18 (ANI): Captive elephants, used by the forest officials to supervise the area, enjoyed a royal treat at the Jaldapara Sanctuary in Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal.

The forest officials use elephants to supervise the area since most of the sanctuary is inaccessible by vehicle or on foot.

Every year on the occasion of Vishwakarma puja, the jumbos get the much-awaited annual holiday.

On this day, the elephants are given special treatment. The day starts with the bathing of the animals in the river. The mahouts then decorate the elephants and give them special food.

“The elephants are the ride of Lord Vishwakarma and Vishwakarma takes care of machine, elephants. That’s why we the staff members of Jaldapara Wildlife perform this puja (ritual),” said Kharke Bahadur, a mahout.

Wildlife officials said elephants played a big role in maintaining the sanctuary.

“Because at Jaldapara, it’s mainly wildlife area. Here, there is very important role for such captive elephants because some areas where vehicle movement and foot patrolling is not possible because there is risk to life and these areas are accessible (because of elephants). So we totally depend on these captive elephants,” said Buddhadev Mondal, range officer at the sanctuary. (ANI)

Barack Obama’s helmetless bike ride sparks controversy

The move, which took place on August 27, has been seen as a bad example by most.

“Yes, I know, President Obama is on a vacation, riding a bike, at a slow cadence, so what if he is not wearing a helmet, right?” Politico.com quoted Martha Castro, a California doctor, as having written on her website.

While Josh Loposer, wrote on Babble.com, a website for parents, “Truly despicable isn’t it? What kind of example is he setting for the nation’s youth?”

“Most bike accidents just happen. Bicycles up and turn over by themselves, and head injuries are a possible consequence of that. … It would be great if the president set an example,” David Mozer, director of the International Bicycle Fund, told the New York Daily News.

With all the attention the incident was receiving, the White House decided on issuing an explanation.

BSP to Sonia Gandhi: Apologise to Mayawati in Parliament for Joshi slur

Lucknow, July 16 (ANI): The controversial arrest of Uttar Pradesh Congress unit chief Rita Bahuguna Joshi over her objectionable remarks on State Chief Minister Mayawati has taken the shape of a major political clash with the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP)-led State government here.

BSP State chief Satish Mishra on Thursday demanded that Congress Party President Sonia Gandhi apologise in the Lok Sabha for Joshi’s remarks against Mayawati.

Bahuguna’s house was set ablaze and some property at the premises was targeted by some unidentified hooligans here on Thursday.

The Congress party blamed BSP workers for the arson act.

Reacting to the incident, Congress party spokesman Abhishek Manu Singhvi said: “It’s a state-sponsored vandalism, hooliganism. We are certainly going to take a serious note of it and all possible legal recourse available to us.”

BSP leaders, however, claimed that Congress workers had set fire to Joshi’s house.

“Our workers did not torch Rita’s house. It was rather Congress workers who set it ablaze,” said Mishra.

State police later claimed to have detained four persons in connection with the incident.

Meanwhile, police prevented the burning of an effigy of Mayawati today. They also baton and cane-charged Congress workers and detained about a hundred of them while they staged a street demonstration against Congress leader Joshi’s arrest.

Police arrested Joshi on Thursday and a local court sent her to 14-day judicial remand for making remarks on Wednesday against the CM in an issue related to rape and murder of some Dalit girls in the UP.

The Samajwadi Party, the main opposition party in Uttar Pradesh State Assembly, blamed the police and offered the Congress party any proposal to carry out a joint protest against the state of affairs in Uttar Pradesh. They criticised the police for acting at the behest of State Government.

“Police are working on the directions of Mayawati Government,” said Akhilesh Yadav, Samajwadi Party’s U.P unit chief.

Bharatiya Janata Party leader Maneka Gandhi demanded the dismissal of the Uttar Pradesh government.

“Time has come for dismissal of the UP Government. In my constituency, about 50 political workers are detained every week. I have never seen a situation like this in India ever,” said Maneka Gandhi.

Joshi was arrested in Ghaziabad en route to New Delhi. She was charged under the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act 1989, for allegedly making derogatory remarks about Mayawati.

Joshi, however, has denied having said anything to offend Mayawati or Dalits.

“It was at a meeting in Moradabad that I had simply sought to draw the people’s attention to the fact that Mayawati’s dole of Rs.25,000 to every Dalit rape victim was quite ironical as the state police chief was spending lakhs on the helicopter ride that he undertakes to hand over that paltry amount to the victim,” Joshi told media persons. 500dlrs-an-hour Hummer ride is new birthday craze for Aussie kids

Melbourne, July 14 (ANI): A new survey has revealed that Aussie kids are now being given a special celebrity kind of birthday treat by their parents – a 500 dollars-an-hour Hummer ride.

According to Hummer hire companies across Sydney, there is a rising demand by parents looking to give their kids a birthday with a celebrity touch.

Clint Comelli, from Hummer Limousines Australia, which charges 500 dollars for an hour ride, said that the chance to party like a rock star was behind its new popularity.

“The Hummers with the big wheels and a lot of chrome are among our most popular,” the Daily Telegraph quoted him as saying.

“It’s most popular with boys between about 9 and 15 years but girls are starting to get in on it too, especially as we have a hot pink Hummer. With some parties, the kids arrange to do something else like bowling or going shopping.

“Otherwise we pick them up from home for an hour ride. We have a karaoke machine or they can plug their iPods in and have a disco-style party while inside.

“It’s been popular for school formals for a while, but more and more we are doing kids’ parties,” he added.

Wafa Elmol hired a Hummer for the birthday of her daughter Dallal, who described it as a “once-in-a-lifetime moment”.

“Even weeks after it, it was all we talked about,” Dallal said.

“We got picked up and about 15 girls were taken for an hour ride.It was a really fun experience,” she added. (ANI)

Ponting admits to giving Lee the occasional kick in the backside to rev him up

Cardiff (Wales), July 9 (ANI): Ricky Ponting has said that he has had to give Brett Lee an occasional kick up the backside to get the best out of his fast bowler.

The Age said that he delivered one such “rocket” during the tour game at Worcester, during which Lee injured a side muscle.

Recalling the incident, Ponting said that he was struggling to get Lee’s attention, who was mucking around with the crowd at fine leg during the first innings against the England Lions.

“I’d waved to him and told him to warm up to bowl the next over, because I knew the ball was going to reverse. But he hadn’t warmed up, so I explained that if he hadn’t been talking to the crowd, maybe he would have heard what I was talking about,” Ponting said in an interview with former England captain Nasser Hussain in the Daily Mail.

Ponting and Lee clashed during the fast bowler’s difficult tour of India last year when Lee queried why he had not been brought into the attack, and the Australian captain told Hussain that his star pacer was someone who needed the occasional kick in the pants.

“Sometimes he is, and one of a captain’s biggest roles is to understand his players’ personalities and get the best out of them,” Ponting said.

“The incident with Brett that’s been most highlighted was in India where it was just a bit of a miscommunication about why he wasn’t bowling at a certain time of day. We got that sorted out but I think a rocket for a player every now and then is not the worst thing. If they’re the right sort of character, they’ll bounce back.”

Lee took seven wickets for the match but stiffened up during the bus ride from Worcester to Cardiff, later explaining that he had been desperate to prove he could still bowl with express pace in an effort to reclaim his place in the team. (ANI)

UK man makes up kidnap story to avoid wife’s nagging

London, Jul 4 (ANI): A man, who was weary of his wife’s nagging, made up a story that he had been kidnapped at knifepoint as he dared not tell her he had been to the bookies.

Peter Woodward, 57, told a court that in order to get away from his wife, he made up the story about being abducted by three armed men, and even reported it to the police at Crosby, Liverpool.

Prosecutor Sandra Arden told South Ribble Magistrates Court that on the morning of April 2, Woodward, of Leyland, Lancashire, had gone for a drive and then to the bookmaker’s, where he won some money.

On his return, to explain where he had been, the part-time cleaner made up a story that three men had carjacked him and made him drive 25 miles to Liverpool before robbing him of 90 pounds.

“A major investigation was commenced and the victim re-driven along the route,” the Daily Express quoted Arden as saying.

“In the end, he just wanted to go for a ride without answering to his wife.

“He went for a drive to Liverpool and thought up the kidnapping story to account for his movements,” she said.

But following a thorough police investigation, he admitted that he had in fact visited a bookmaker’s and had a large amount of cash on him.

He was arrested on May 6, and admitted falsely reporting an offence to police.

On July 3, Woodward, who was supported by his humiliated but loyal wife Janet, was ordered to pay 1,000 pounds compensation for the 185 man-hours the police put in investigating his claims at a cost of more than 5,000 pounds.

“It was due to the extensive investigation that Mr Woodward’s lies were uncovered,” Detective Sergeant John Cass, of South Ribble CID, said.

“All allegations made to the police have to be fully investigated, but it is a sad fact that some people do fabricate being victims of crime.

“Mr Woodward made a very serious allegation to the police, that he had been kidnapped, which will always be investigated extremely thoroughly.

“Mr Woodward was prosecuted due to the amount of time invested in this investigation, which could have been put to better use investigating real crime,” he added. (ANI)

‘Nano-sized assassins’ for bacterial infections in implant patients created

Washington, June 27 (ANI): Researchers have created what they call ‘nano-sized assassins’ to kill bacteria responsible for infections in implant patients.

From catheters to prosthetics, the bacteria called Staphylococcus epidermidis are known to hitch a ride on a range of medical devices implanted into patients.

According to researchers, iron-oxide nanoparticles have been shown to eliminate a bacterial infection on an implanted prosthetic device.

Inside the body, the bacteria multiply on the implant’s surface and then build a slimy, protective film to shield the colony from antibiotics.

Webster and Brown graduate student Erik Taylor have created a nano-sized headhunter that zeroes in on the implant, penetrates S. epidermidis’s defensive wall and kills the bacteria.

The study showed that 28 percent of the bacteria on an implant had been eliminated after 48 hours by injecting 10 micrograms of the nanoparticle agents.

The same dosage repeated three times over six days destroyed essentially all the bacteria.

The tests show “there will be a continual killing of the bacteria until the film is gone,” said Webster, who is editor-in-chief of the peer-reviewed journal in which the paper appears.

The finding is published in the International Journal of Nanomedicine. (ANI)

Marine Joe Townsend, who lost both legs in a blast, will fly out with the prince when he makes his first official foreign visit this weekend.

The 21-year-old commando was maimed when he stepped on a Taliban anti-tank mine 15 months ago, The Sun reports.

The marine, from Eastbourne, East Sussex, will even be guest of honour at the New York Mets baseball team’s game against the Florida Marlins on Saturday.

New York Mets owner Fred Wilpon on Harry’s suggestion, is bankrolling Joe’s trip. Also going on the visit to care for Joe is his mother Debi Hawkins.

The trip will be a boost for Joe after he had to pull out of a ‘Help for Heroes’ bike ride in France this week on medical grounds.

Alcohol intoxication may not always be visible

Washington, May 23 (ANI): Alcohol intoxication is often accompanied by trouble walking or slurred speech, however, exceptionally tolerant individuals do not show signs of tipsiness even though they are very intoxicated, says an expert.

John Brick, executive director of Intoxikon International said that one of the deadliest consequence of alcohol over-consumption is impaired driving and it is still difficult for trained observers to fully identify “intoxication,” given that so many factors contribute to it.

“It is important to understand and recognize intoxication because of the risk for injury that results from it,” he said

“Understanding and recognizing an intoxicated person can help us make decisions about allowing a person to drive, accepting a ride from someone, or cutting off a drinker,” he added.

Brick revealed that ‘Obvious intoxication’ as defined in some courts is not always the same as ‘visible intoxication’.

In some states ‘obvious’ intoxication means that if someone has consumed a large number of drinks, it should be obvious that they are intoxicated and not capable of driving. Other state laws define ‘visible’ intoxication as specific types of behaviour, such as trouble walking, slurred speech and other common signs of alcohol intoxication.

In most people reliable signs of intoxication are present by casual observation at a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 150 mg/dl or more, even in most tolerant individuals.

At a BAC of less than 150 mg/dl, signs of visible intoxication are not reliably present in most drinkers, and the likelihood of identifying signs of impairment is less than chance.

“This presents a particular challenge to preventionists,” said Brick.

“For example, how do you intervene or make an informed decision about driving with someone if they do not appear visibly intoxicated? People who are too impaired to drive are not typically staggering, slurring their speech, or presenting gross signs of intoxication.

“A very small woman drinking rapidly could attain a BAC of 150 mg/dl with only four standard drinks, whereas a large man might require 10 or 12 such drinks, again depending on how long they were drinking and other scientific factors,” he added.

At times when people show no signs of visible intoxication even though they are very intoxicated, the only way to know if they are intoxicated might be to count drinks, Brick explained.

“If you have a policy that allows a certain number of drinks per hour, for example, you may rely on counting rather than paying attention to behavior, and end up overserving,” he said.

Drink counting is also problematic in a busy bar etc, so Brick said there is a need for further research to establish a reasonable maximum number of drinks to be served, coupled with training to identify signs of intoxication.

The review is published in Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research and is currently available at Early View. (ANI)

Shooting with Spielberg rids Shia La Beouf of stress

Washington, May 18 (ANI): Hollywood actor Shia La Beouf has revealed that he enjoys shooting a few rounds with filmmaker Steven Spielberg to get rid of stress.

LaBeouf says that rifle-range shooting helps him feel recharged, and doesn’t let him be forced to depend on drugs, drink and therapy to unwind.

“If I find I’m sinking, I’ll get out and paint toilet seats or ride dirt bikes or shoot. Firing shotguns really helps me,” Contactmusic quoted him as saying.

LaBeouf thinks that Steven, who introduced him to guns, is a perfect shooting partner.

“Steven Spielberg takes me when he goes… He’s an Olympic shot. The hand-eye co-ordination of that man is unlike anything I’ve ever seen. If he weren’t a great director, he could be one of our greatest snipers,” he said. (ANI)
