Chandigarh, Sept 17 (ANI): In a bid to provide quick, hassle free and reasonably charged mode of transportation, a dial-an-auto service equipped with GPS navigation system has been launched for the first time in Chandigarh.

The neat and clean pink coloured motor rickshaws, known as Tuk Tuk, are changing the way people travel in the city.

The fleet of 10 dial-an-auto-rickshaw, which is only a phone call away, also boasts of two lady drivers, the first in Chandigarh.

Women passengers, who feel safer traveling with lady drivers, are appreciating their services.

“Chandigarh is one city where people are safe anyway. We have been told we are safe with the service,” said Alka Thapar, a lady auto driver.

They record the call and then convey to the driver by selecting the vehicle nearby to pick up the customer. That’s the procedure and customer has to pay from the pick up point to the drive point only,” said VS Dhillon, Managing Director of the Tuk Tuk Auto Rickshaw Company.

The service aims at providing a quick, reliable and safe journey to people who can relax and sit back without the fear of getting fleeced by drivers.

“I’m using it for the first time It’s reasonably priced and I’m really liking it,” says Charanjit, a customer.

The new service is a welcome change for commuters. With the new service in place, passengers can hope for a change in the attitude of traditional auto drivers who are often accused of fleecing customers. By Sunil Sharma (ANI)

Traffic jams, mishaps make it a nightmare

NEW DELHI: Traffic jams, accidents and snapped water pipelines the people living along Narwana Road in Patparganj have seen it all in the past two
years. The condition of this road has been so bad that rickshaws frequently overturned, traffic moved at a snail’s pace and frequent digging by DJB made it difficult to walk even on the pavement, say the residents.

“This road is not constructed properly. DJB keeps digging it up time and again. I was once going on a rickshaw on this road when it lost balance and overturned. Since then, I just prefer to walk, which is equally difficult as there is dust, pebbles and potholes everywhere,” said Rita Juneja, a resident of Vinod Nagar. Now, work is on for damage control before the elections but PWD says there is cost escalation and issues with the contractor.

B R Yadav of Ekta Gardens said, “Often pipelines are dug out and pipes are kept on the road here and there. It’s a complete mess and needs to be set right as soon as possible.”

The Narwana Road has 12 apartments on one side and nine on the other. Residents say they had to face a severe water problem in February as the underground pipelines had been cut due to digging of the road. “Water is just one problem. Driving on this road is so difficult as everyone wants to drive on the smooth part. As a result, the traffic gets clogged, specially during the evening rush hour,” says Rajesh Gupta, a resident of Block A.

Shubhra Ganguly, who lives in Oxford Apartment, says the “problem gets aggravated at night as the number of vehicles on this road increases significantly with people returning home from work. Walking amidst the traffic in the dark gets too risky.”

A resident of Vinod Nagar, dentist Upma Tomar, says she wanted to complain but didn’t know whom to turn to.

BSP candidate campaigns on bullock cart

Etawah, Mar 27 (ANI): A candidate of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) in Etawah in Uttar Pradesh has adopted unique means for campaigning to woo the voters.

Gauri Shankar, who is contesting from Erawah, is trying to woo the voters by campaigning on a bullock cart, a horse cart and rickshaw.

According to Shankar, these modes of transport are the common man’s transport and that is why he is using them for his campaigning.

“Bullock carts, horse carts and rickshaws are the vehicles used by the common man in every nook and corner of the country. But if I receive your blessings, I too may travel in big cars with a beacon light on the top, ” he said.

To watch the unusual view, many residents came on streets and cheered for him, but the former district head of Congress from Etawah, Suraj Singh Yadav was not quite happy with the way campaigning proceeded.

“During the time of elections, politicians should adopt normal ways of campaigning rather than campaigning in a dramatic manner. If a candidate is aged, he or she can use a transport. But ordinarily normal ways should be used, ” said Suraj Singh Yadav. By Kamna Mathur (ANI)

Being slum kid in Delhi is a way of life for some

New Delhi, Feb 23 (ANI): While Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millonaire has received a mixed response of both appreciation and outrage in India for showing the life of slum children, there are many children in this part of the world for whom being a slum kid is just a way of life.

Fifteen-year-old Mehboob has no regret for not being sent to school by his family. He is happy that he is earning a livelihood out of collecting garbage from colleges in Delhi University’s north campus, opposite to the Law Faculty.

Murtaza, his eight-year-old brother, helps him to collect and bring the garbage from colleges on a rickshaw.

The duo dumps the collection at a specific dumping corner on the road side. They segregate the useful things like plastic or glass bottles or other stuff and carry them back home located in Bhalaswa J.J.Colony.

Their father, a junk seller, sells off those belongings to other shops. The hardship of these two little brothers contributes rupees 100-150 to the family income everyday. And, they are happy helping their poor parents at such a young age.

Mehboob tells that it all started after he developed a friendly relation with one sweeper appointed for maintaining cleanliness on the road near the Faculty of Arts.

“After a few days of initial interaction, I asked him to allow me to chose things from is daily garbage collection dumped here. He readily allowed me. For giving me this opportunity, I volunteered for him to collect garbage and do the sweeping on the road at time whenever he wants me too. I do it approximately 8-10 days a month when he is unwell.”
Sending the younger brother to school never suited the family, as during off days they prefer visiting their original home in Kolkata’s Madnipur area.

“During holidays, we prefer visiting relatives in Kolkata with family. Besides, the daily earning here is a big satisfaction. That’s why neither I felt like attending school nor sending Murtaja, my little brother, to any school.” By Sandeep Datta (ANI)

Indian bicycle industry expanding

Ludhiana, Jan.28 (ANI): Not many may know but India is the largest bicycle manufacturer in the world after China. The industry, having an annual turnover of over 1.2 million bicycles, is today all set to expand itself to meet new challenges posed by global slowdown.

It has been observed that there is a broad spectrum of bicycles from fitness to racing in demand. And, India can meet this demand effectively.

The Indian bicycle manufacturing and bicycle spares industry is widely recognized for its quality standards in international markets.

One of the country’s leading bicycle manufacturers and exporters is Neelam cycle industries. Operating under the flagship of M/S Seth Industrial Corporation, the ISO certified company came into existence in 1964.
The company specializes in manufacturing a wide range of complete bicycles, spare parts and heavy Duty Kits for Rickshaws.
With new plants in the offing, Neelam Cycles is optimistic about raising its existing turnover of 24 million USD to 30 million USD by the end of this year.
“Our R and D (Research and Development) is working day and night to develop new models. We are installing new plants. Our new painting plant has started just recently with the cost of 40-50 Lakhs. By such actions we hope to increase the production by at least 25% from the previous year,” said K.K.Seth, Director of the Neelam Cycle Industries.

The country’s 1.2 billion dollars bicycle industry, which thrives largely on domestic market, also exports eco-friendly bicycles to Africa, Latin America and Gulf countries.
Neelam Cycles too has tested the international waters through direct and indirect exports. ts export base lies in 32 countries. But with recession, higher steel prices and stiff competition from China, the company is facing tough times. And, this has led Neelam Cycles to look at innovative strategies.

“Certainly it (recession) has affected. But we have expanded over area. Even small towns of India also have Neelam cycle dealership. We have expanded the global markets. Previously we were confined to East Africa but now we also have West Africa as our market. We have also added some countries of Asia like Bangaldesh, Burma. So we are expanding the area to meet global recession,” said K. K. Seth.
The company closely follows new market trends, is fully conscious of the buyer’s needs and is launching many more reasonably priced and advanced models.
“We have a good response from the market as we are not only the manufacturers of standard bicycles. The segment has changed. We serve bicycles that cater to different segments from a Child to an elderly. Apart from that we have a good share in market. We have 70-80 per cent of the market for the rickshaw kit,” said Satish Talwar, the marketing head of the Neelam Cycle Industries.

Separate bicycle tracks are coming up in Indian cities and this given hope of a revival of cycle culture in metros to the manufacturers.

Though global recession has hit the bicycle exports too, Neelam Cycles is of the opinion that there is huge domestic potential, especially in Tier II and Tier III cities in the country.

Metros are basically regarded as Tier I cities, relatively smaller cities are regarded as Tier II cities whereas smaller cities are considered as Tier III ones. (ANI)
