Restaurant tells diners to eat up or be fined and leave

(Reuters Life!) – An Australian restaurateur fed up with the waste left by diners has ordered her customers to eat everything on their plates for their sake of the earth or pay a penalty and not return.

Lifestyle

Chef Yukako Ichikawa has introduced a 30 percent discount for diners who eat all the food they have ordered at Wafu, her 30-seat restaurant in the Sydney suburb of Surry Hills, that describes itself as “guilty free Japanese cuisine.”

“To contribute toward creating a sustainable future we request a little more of our guests than most other restaurants,” she says in a list of her restaurant’s policies that is pinned on the door to the eatery.

This list includes finishing all dishes ordered which are organic and free of gluten, dairy, sugar and eggs and the chef and her staff tell people who don’t clear their plates to choose another restaurant next time.

“Finishing your meal requires that everything is eaten except lemon slices, gari (sushi ginger) and wasabi,” says the menu.

“Please also note that vegetables and salad on the side are NOT decorations; they are part of the meal too.”

Wafu’s strict policy has been welcomed by some but criticized as overbearing by some reviewers. Ichikawa is undeterred.

“Wafu is not just a restaurant; it is an extension of Yukako’s personal ethos toward nourishment and sustenance,” says a statement on the restaurant’s website.

“We are not only committed to serving meals that nurture and respect the body but are actively dedicated to the notion of waste prevention, and take seriously our responsibility toward the environment and sustainability for the future.”

”Sickest film ever” makes viewers reach for sick bags

London, May 18 (ANI): A movie that is being hailed as one of the most twisted, stomach-churning films of all time, is said to have made American cinemagoers reach for the sick bags.

”The Human Centipede” features a depraved storyline about a psychopathic German surgeon who drugs his victims before surgically joining them together, mouth to backside, in order to create a human centipede.

And now British movie fans are bracing themselves for the forthcoming release of ultimate video nasty.

The horror is said to be so gross that cinemagoers have been racing out of US screenings to be sick – and reviewers are warning audiences not to eat before seeing the film.

Many of the actresses who auditioned for the gore fest refused to have anything to do with the film and walked out in disgust when they got a look at the full script.

But the sadistic and vile scenes of humans being stitched together in the doctor”s cellar, after the surgeon”s earlier failed attempt to do the same with dogs, are proving the film”s big selling point.

Clips from the film have been a YouTube sensation, with the trailer alone racking up 1.4million views. Screenings in Los Angeles have also sold out.

Such has been the repulsion and fascination with the film on horror websites that audiences in US cities where the movie isn”t being shown have won the right to have the movie beamed into their own homes.

In an unusual move, the low-budget, high-gore film is now available on pay-per-view television right across America while still on limited release in cinemas.

In a few months time, the movie is set for release in Britain, if it doesn”t get banned first, and the buzz surrounding the film has led to several UK companies competing for the rights to release it later this year.

“It”s a very sick idea but I knew it was something that people would talk about,” the Sun quoted the film”s Dutch writer-director Tom Six, as saying.

He decided to make the villain German after learning about sick Nazi medical experiments carried out after their invasion of the Netherlands in World War II.

German actor Dieter Laser plays twisted surgeon Dr Heiter and creates one of the most memorable and evil villains in cinema history.

A real surgeon advised the moviemakers during filming and the movie”s poster boasts that the procedures shown in ”The Human Centipede” are “100 per cent medically accurate”.

Meanwhile the twisted flick looks set to become a lucrative new horror franchise with The Human Centipede 2 already in production. (ANI)

iRise 8 Enterprise Visualization Ships

New Capabilities Empower Businesses to Visualize Broader Range of Applications
Faster, with Higher Fidelity; Includes Open API for Extensions and Integrations
EL SEGUNDO, Calif.–(Business Wire)–
iRise®, the global leader in enterprise visualization solutions today announced
the immediate availability of iRise 8, the next major release of its market
leading enterprise-grade visualization platform for business. New capabilities
in iRise 8 focus on accelerating the time to visualization for both custom and
packaged applications, making it easier to administer geographically disperse
teams of authors and reviewers, and opening up Application Programming
Interfaces (APIs) that enable customers and third-party providers to create
visualization extensions and integrations.

“We have experienced dramatic growth in our services business, with both
government and commercial clients, because of increased demand for our expertise
in iRise,” stated Scott McDowell, founder of OneSpring, an iRise partner. “We
expect the new custom extension and content capabilities in iRise 8 to create
new revenue opportunities for us, and at the same time further accelerate our
customers` success.”

New capabilities delivered with iRise 8 include:

* Drag and Drop Support Speeds Time to Visualize Rich Internet Applications
Drag and drop interactions like those seen in modern portals, email interfaces,
movable pop-ups, and file organizers can now be visualized with a few simple
clicks, saving hours of time and providing a richer experience to stakeholders
and more usable applications to customers. For the first time `fat client`
interactions can be simulated effortlessly, expanding the use of iRise to the
full spectrum of complex application interfaces.

* iRise Content Modules Can Be Created, License-Protected and Distributed
The iRise 8 Definition Center now supports the distribution of third-party
pre-packaged and licensed visualization content. The intellectual property
contained within visualizations can be protected and licensed to a specific
Definition Center and can only be modified by a set of authorized iRise Studio
users. Companies and individuals interested in developing and marketing iRise
Content Modules (for specific technology solutions, industries, or application
types) to the iRise customer and partner community should contact iRise for
details.

* iBloc Plug-in API Extends Capabilities and Speeds Time to Visualization
The iBloc Plug-in API allows partners and customers to create custom user
interface (UI) controls and behaviors that can be incorporated into
visualizations and re-used across the enterprise. Alternatively, companies that
have already developed a standard library of UI controls can quickly package
them as iBlocs for use in iRise visualizations, or leverage the thousands of
freely available controls from open source libraries like jQuery and Dojo to
accelerate the process. iBlocs hide complexity and thus dramatically reduce the
time required by non-technical users to visualize complex interactions or
industry-specific business logic and behaviors. They can be bundled into iRise
Content Modules as well as included in corporate pattern libraries, sets of
pre-configured visualization elements that enforce branding and best practices
for usability across organizations.

* Collaboration Becomes Easier with Improved Enterprise Administration
The iRise Definition Center is the hub of global collaboration for both
visualization authors and reviewers. iRise 8 Definition Center debuts a
completely revamped user interface, and extends its enterprise administration
capabilities to make it easier and faster to organize, share and find projects,
as well as manage user groups and permissions.

* iConnect API Jumpstarts Downstream Development
iRise 8 now supports the ability to export a visualization in XML format. The
iConnect API exports the complete inventory of all atomic user interface, data
and logic elements (along with their properties), and a screenshot for each
page, master and scenario in the visualization. This XML output can easily be
converted – programmatically or using tools – into richly-formatted
specification documents and spreadsheets, integrated into downstream development
or quality tools, or even transformed into development assets such as HTML or
code.

“In the wake of a challenging economy and increase in complex sourcing, the
demand for effective business communication and collaboration across distributed
organizations enabled by requirements visualization solutions is significant,”
said Melinda Ballou, program director for IDC`s Application Lifecycle Management
service. “IDC research indicates that 70-80% of IT software project failures
occur as a result of poor requirements gathering, analysis and management and
the first gap in the process is poor communication – visualization can help
facilitate collaboration by bridging that communication gap.”

“We are advancing the state of the art for enterprise visualization. Being able
to assemble and review highly-interactive visualizations of new ideas with
globally-distributed stakeholders in hours, not days, is a game changer for all
companies that must define and deliver mission-critical software,” stated
Maurice Martin, president, COO and founder of iRise. “The innovations in iRise 8
create exciting new opportunities for both our customers and partners. We
invented software visualization nine years ago. With the launch of the iRise 8
enterprise visualization platform we are now poised to ignite a diverse
third-party ecosystem of value-added content and services providers that will
further accelerate our customers` ability to deliver innovation and project
success.”

Pricing and Availability

iRise 8 is immediately available, but excludes the iBloc Plug-in API, which will
be available as part of iRise 8.1 Beta within the next 60 days.

iRise can be downloaded at no charge for 30 day trials. Pricing starts at $6,995
per seat for the single user iRise Professional Edition. For more information,

For Business’ Sake, Yelp Needs New Owners

Yelp, the popular reviews site, needs a new owner, one that can bring credibility and quiet allegations that it spins reviews in order to extort advertising money from the businesses reviewed.

While I can’t say whether the new claims are true, they certainly bring Yelp’s reliability into question. The company, however, denies the allegations, contained in a class-action lawsuit filed Tuesday in Los Angeles.

Back in December, there was news that Yelp had been purchased by Google. I hoped that would help Yelp solve whatever problems it has and return credibility to its reviews. My sense is that Yelp does have a problem and I generally find the claims against the company to be reasonably credible. Of course, I could be totally wrong.

As businesspeople, we are increasingly finding ourselves held hostage by Yelp and other review sites, where a handful of disgruntled customers, or competitors pretending to be customers, can damage a hard-earned reputation.

It may be that customers are sophisticated enough to take the good with the bad and average the reviews out. I don’t think so, but owners and employees can definitely take a negative Yelp review more seriously than it probably deserves. Customers may do so, too.

Further, Yelp reviewers are self-selected and represent, I believe, atypical customers. I only post on Yelp about places–restaurants, usually–that I either really love or where I had a bad experience.

Integrating Yelp into my Google account might encourage me to do more rating as I visit different places, increasing the number of middle-of-the-road ratings I’d give. If other users followed suit, Yelp might be a more representative sample of customer experience.

Alas, this Google integration was not to be as Yelp reportedly walked away from the $550 million deal, which is a lot more than I’d give for Yelp.

As I said, Yelp denies the allegations, and had this to say in a short post to its Official Blog:

“You can see for yourself: thousands of businesses that advertise on Yelp have both negative and positive reviews. Despite these counter-examples to the contrary (virtually no advertiser on Yelp has a perfect reputation), extensive media explorations that end inconclusively, and the absence of any actual evidence to support this theory, this unfortunate and untrue meme has taken on a life of its own.”

Short of current or former employees willing to validate the claims of Yelp’s accusers, media inquiries will end inconclusively. The inability to find such people, however, tends to support Yelp’s denials.

It is difficult for an independent company to what Yelp does.

As an advertising-based business, it is easy to imagine–rightly or not–why Yelp might want to massage its reviews to make its advertising more sellable. If Yelp were funded solely from user subscriptions–like Consumer Reports–Yelp would immediately become more credible.

Likewise, it would help if Yelp had a corporate parent for whom messing with the reviews wouldn’t be worth the potential downside. Google would have been such a company, Microsoft another, but after that the list is pretty small.

Nevertheless, business owners would be far better off if Yelp were to change its business model or find an owner for whom the company would be but a sideline.

(I would be interested in hearing about any self-defense tactics against bad Yelp reviews that readers may have discovered. Please send me an e-mail using the link below.)

Lindsay strips off in new film ‘Labour Pains’

London, August 30 (ANI): Lindsay Lohan has reportedly peeled off her layers in new film ‘Labour Pains’.

An exclusive clip showing the ‘Mean Girls’ actress in her underwear was said to have emerged.

” Lohan’s new movie Labour Pains went straight to DVD on both sides of the Atlantic, with no preview copies available for reviewers, sadly,” News of the World quoted film critic Robbe Collin as saying.

“So please bear in mind this is a total stab in the dark, when I say it’s a pile of abject tosh.

“Lohan stars as a secretary at a publishing company who’s about to be laid off, so she lies and says she’s pregnant to save her job.

“But then she gets promoted and has to write a book about…wait for it…BEING PREGNANT! Brilliant.

“Anyway, here she is in her pants,” Collin added. (ANI)

Tennis Australia CEO agrees to tone down ‘sleazy’ Absinthe cabaret show

Melbourne, Jan.20 (ANI): Tennis Australia has agreed to tone down a burlesque-style show featuring obscenity and simulated masturbation at the Australian Open.

CEO Steve Wood, however, has defended the decision to include a show in the event’s entertainment line-up that has been described by some reviewers as “sleazy” and “borderline pornographic”.

According to news.com.au, the show has featured racial slurs – including anti-German, anti-Asian and anti-black references – as well as references to gay bashings.

The daring circus-meets-burlesque Broadway show, Absinthe, opened to Australian audiences last night in the Spiegeltent at Spiegelworld – the Australian Open’s newest entertainment attraction.

Performances are scheduled twice nightly – 7pm and 9pm – every night of the tournament, with a recommendation that those attending should not be under 18.

But critics, who say it shouldn’t be associated with the family-friendly sporting event, have slammed it. (ANI)

Israel’s war documentary Waltz With Bashir gets top US prize

Israel's war documentary Waltz With Bashir gets top US prizeLos Angeles – Waltz With Bashir, the animated documentary of an Israeli soldier’s war trauma, has been named the best film of 2008 by the National Society of Film Critics, according to Variety on Monday.

The autobiographical film by Israeli director Ari Folman portrays the harrowing consequences of Israel’s invasion of Lebanon in 1982.

The movie has been widely acclaimed since its release last year, but has gained added relevance with Israel’s current incursion into the Gaza Strip. It is seen as a contender in both the animation and foreign-language Oscar categories.

The organization, which includes about 50 reviewers from some of the most prestigious publications in the US, also honoured Sean Penn for best actor for his role as a gay political pioneer in the movie Milk.

Sally Hawkins won the best actress nod for Happy Go Lucky. The British comedy also yielded best screenplay and director prizes for Mike Leigh and a supporting actor award for Eddie Marsan.

Hanna Schygulla took the supporting actress prize for The Edge of Heaven. (dpa)
