Tiger Woods gets new blonde girlfriend

New York, May 23 (IANS) After his blonde wife Elin Nordegren left him following exposure of his serial infidelities, Tiger Woods is reportedly trying out a replacement blonde, in the same way some golfers try out replacement clubs, say reports here.

The world’s richest athlete till his fall from grace was spotted out on the golf course in his gated Florida community taking a young, fair-haired stunner who was not his wife for a test drive, says the New York Post quoting a celebrity web site.

Woods’ comely course partner was a ‘look-alike’ for his sexy Swedish wife Elin Nordegren, says the Post.

‘Tiger was on the golf course the other day, hitting balls. He was with a very pretty blonde who looked a lot like Elin. She was sitting in the golf cart while he was playing,” the tabloid quoted the website as saying.

‘They were talking and laughing and obviously having a good time. Tiger has been out frequently… he doesn’t want to stay home alone anymore.’

The golfer and his wife have not had any contact since the failure of their apparent attempt to patch things up, says the report.

Woods’ double life came to light in November when he crashed his car outside his Florida home ostensibly after being hit by his wife, leading to revelations of his serial infidelities.

Even as one after another 19 women claimed sexual relations with the golfer and his marriage crumbled, the golfer went into rehabilitation from sexual addiction. He came out in February to hold a press conference to make a tearful admission of his infidelities.

The golfer took part in The Players Championship earlier this month but withdrew after suffering injury.

Though the couple have not filed for divorce, his wife lives separately with their two kids.

MRI shows Woods is down with inflamed neck joint

New York, May 13 (ANI): An MRI has revealed that golfer Tiger Woods has an inflamed neck joint that causes pain and makes it hard to turn his head.

Woods had to withdraw from the final round of The Players Championship on Sunday after a week in which he was seen stretching and rolling his neck.

The CBS quoted Woods as saying on his website that his neck had been bothering him since before he returned from a five-month layoff at the Masters, and that it was not related to the November 27 car accident when he ran into a tree, setting off revelations of infidelity.

“I now need to take care of this condition and will return to playing golf when I”m physically able,” Woods added.

Woods said treatment would include physical therapy, such as soft-tissue massage, rest and anti-inflammatory medicine. He said the prognosis was for a full recovery, and while the layoff is not expected to be long, rehab can vary.

“I want to practice, I want to play, I want to compete, but this (neck) is not allowing me to do the things that I need to do on my golf swing to hit the proper shots. I need to get to where I can do that again,” he said. (ANI)

ICC made me a scapegoat, says Marlon Samuels

Sydney, May 6 (ANI): West Indian batsman Marlon Samuels, whose two year ban for informing a bookmaker is about to end in three days, has said that he did nothing wrong and ICC made him a scapegoat.

“I am an honest person. My conscience would not allow me to come back if I knew within myself I had done something wrong,” he said.

“They (ICC) needs to spend time on situations like this, it is delicate and very important because you are dealing with players” careers,” The Sydney Morning Herald quoted Samuels, as saying.

“When they looked at my case, they used me as a scapegoat, the ICC wanted to make an example out of me when I was never in a position for them to be able to use me as an example. The way they dealt with my case was very unfair.

“I really didn”t have a case; when I went to the hearing I thought it would be just a fair process but it wasn”t like a hearing at all, I was just banned,” Samuels said.

The case against Samuels centred on a police-tapped telephone conversation he had with Dubai-based Mukesh Kochhar before the Windies” first one-dayer against India in January 2008 and included accurate revelations of the Windies” batting line-up and bowling order. The chat included both men saying they would be in Mumbai.

After the tour Samuels went to Mumbai with Chris Gayle to appear in a television show, but they backed out after the promised 2000 dollars could not be guaranteed to them before shooting, The Sydney Morning Herald reports.

They still had to pay for their hotels, but Samuels” credit card was rejected. He phoned Kochhar from the hotel lobby and soon a man sent on Kochhar”s behalf arrived at the hotel and settled the 1238 dollars bill.

Samuels has always maintained the money was a loan and he intended to pay it back but the ICC viewed the payment as some compensation for the divulging team information.

It later found him guilty of breaching its code of conduct for “receiving money, or benefit or other reward that could bring him or the game of cricket into disrepute”. (ANI)

Left demands JPC probe on Tharoor-IPL issue

New Delhi, Apr 19 (ANI): Left parties on Monday called for a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) to probe the controversy surrounding the involvement of former Minister of State for External Affairs, Shashi Tharoor, with the Kochi IPL franchise.

Communist Party of India (Marxist) politburo member Brinda Karat said her party was not satisfied with Tharoor’s resignation from the cabinet

She said a Joint Parliamentary Committee needs to look into the issue.

“We want a Join Parliamentary Committee to go into the entire matter, and Tharoor”s resignation does not put a full stop to the entire matter. What was the wrongdoing, was there a misuse of position, the entire accounting, where”s the money (for IPL) coming from – every day there are further revelations that we read in the newspapers,” Karat said.

“Unless the Government wants to take the postion that they have nothing to do with this, which I think would be very wrong indeed,” she added.

Her comments came just hours after the Union Finance Ministry said it is carrying out a detailed investigation into the teams” auction records and accounts.

This is a parallel exercise to the Income Tax Department”s raids and findings to get to the bottom of the Tharoor-Kochi IPL mystery. (ANI)

Ramprakash to divorce wife after his extra marital affair comes to light

London, Apr 17 (ANI): England’s cricketer of Indian origin Mark Ramprakash is all set to separate from his wife, after his affair with a single mother was revealed.

The former England batsman, 40, and Vandana, 39, have released a statement to say their 17-year marriage is over.

Ramprakash flew home from a cricket tournament in Abu Dhabi last month for ”personal reasons”.

A statement from the couple’s lawyers released today described the split as amicable, The Sun reports.

“Mark Ramprakash and his wife Vandana Ramprakash are to divorce. They are both sad about this and are agreeing to an amicable parting. Their priority is the well being of their two daughters,” the statement said.

It said the split was a private matter, adding: “Neither party will make any further statement.”

The Strictly Come Dancing winner, who waltzed to victory in 2006 with partner Karen Hardy, was hit by revelations about his cheating while starring on the show.

Vandana who had sat in the audience every week was left reeling when it emerged he had had an affair with Sadia Saleem.

After admitting cheating Ramprakash said he was distraught at the grief he had caused his wife and family.

Mark and Vandana battled to try to save the marriage before announcing they were separating in December 2007. (ANI)

Mickelson turns Masters into family celebration

(Reuters) – Phil Mickelson loves Augusta National like a second home, making it the perfect place for the big left-hander to turn Sunday at the Masters into a touching family day with his heart-warming victory.

Nearly one year after revealing his wife Amy had been diagnosed with breast cancer, Mickelson charged through the homeward nine on Sunday for a three-shot triumph and an emotional embrace with his family.

A 10-foot birdie putt at the last ended it, and started a hug-fest that began with his caddie Jim Mackay on the green and led to a long embrace with Amy, her head buried into his right shoulder as a tear rolled down his left cheek.

“I don’t normally shed tears over wins, and when Amy and I hugged off 18, that was a very emotional moment for us and something that I’ll look back on and just cherish,” he said. “I’ll cherish every moment of this week.”

What began as a “Tiger watch” to see how the world number one would play after a five-month absence, and how fans would react to him after revelations about his string of marital infidelities, ended in a family feel-good moment.

Mickelson did not know Amy would make it to the course.

She and their three children had arrived Tuesday but was too weak from her medication and remained at their rented house.

“It’s been an emotional year, and I’m very proud of my wife and the fight and struggle she’s been through,” Mickelson said during the Green Jacket presentation at Butler Cabin.

“It’s been a difficult year, and to come out on top in this tournament is very emotional.”

Mickelson, whose mother, Mary, was also diagnosed with breast cancer shortly after his wife, had not had his family travel with him to a tournament in 11 months.

“It’s been tough,” said world number three Mickelson, whose victory over Briton Lee Westwood gave him a third Green Jacket.

“We are fortunate long term, but the meds that (Amy’s) been taking has been very difficult, and she didn’t feel well and she doesn’t have energy.

“This means so much to us to be able to share this.”

Mickelson, 39, whose black cap has a pink ribbon stitched on it to promote breast cancer awareness, had been struggling with his form but something magical happens when he comes to Augusta.

“When I get here to Augusta, I get very relaxed and feel very comfortable here,” he said. “I’m in love with this place and it brings out the best in me.”

EXPLOSIVE CHARGE

Mickelson, who exploded up the leaderboard on Saturday when he went eagle-eagle-birdie from the 13th, turned it on again with a birdie at the 12th hole that put him in the lead for good.

“When I hit that shot on 12 to a very similar spot to where I was at in ’04 (the year of his first Masters win), I knew this putt. That putt was what I had been waiting for, a 20-footer to go in. That got the round going.”

At the 13th, Mickelson produced a spectacular shot.

After an errant drive put him behind two trees, he rifled a 207-yard shot through a four-foot gap between them to settle three feet away from the cup on the par-five green.

“I was going to have to go through that gap if I laid up or went for the green,” explained Mickelson, who prefers to be daring on the golf course.

“The gap … wasn’t huge, but it was big enough for a ball to fit through,” he said to laughter from the press corps.

“I just felt like at that time, I needed to trust my swing and hit a shot, and it came off perfect.”

Mickelson failed to sink the putt for eagle, but his birdie there gave him a two-shot lead and he was never headed.

The victory, which he also celebrated with his children Amanda, Sophia and Evan, gave him a fourth major championship and first since the 2006 Masters — giving him the most other than Woods of any active regular tour player.

After last year’s winner Angel Cabrera helped him into the Green Jacket, Mickelson took a moment to enjoy the sensation.

“It fits,” he said. “It feels great.”

FFA prefers Fowler to stay with Fury

As Sydney FC prepares to swoop on star striker Robbie Fowler, Football Federation Australia (FFA) has revealed its preference is for the former Liverpool great to remain with the struggling Fury.

Fowler is expected to part from the Fury, who have been bailed out by FFA following revelations the club’s founder Don Matheson has suffered losses in the realm of $4.5 million.

There had been talks of Fowler adopting a player-coach role with the Fury, but that has been vetoed by the FFA, with Sydney now the prolific scorer’s likely destination.

The Sky Blues have an opening for their marquee player position due to John Aloisi’s departure for new club Melbourne Heart and would be prepared to pay Fowler the $750,000 he reportedly earned last season with the Fury.

Newcastle, which has been very active in the player market during the off-season, has also expressed an interest in Fowler, but Sydney is expected to gain the services of a player it chased three years ago.

FFA chief executive Ben Buckley says his organisation would prefer Fowler to stick with the Fury, having become the face of the club over the past year.

“We’ve had some conversations with clubs in the last 48 hours seeking clarification whether Robbie can be contacted and whether he’s available to play at other clubs,” he said.

“We’ve passed that information on to his management.

“We would like to see Robbie stay in Australia. Ideally we’d like to see him stay in Townsville at the North Queensland Fury.

“But if that’s not the case, we’d like to see him continue to play football in Australia.”

Sydney FC chief executive Edwin Lugt insists Fowler is yet to sign with the club, but the reigning champions are keen to bring him to the harbour city.

Next chapter: Oprah to launch travelling talk show

Superstar TV host Oprah Winfrey reassured anxious fans by announcing that far from quitting the talk show world, she is to launch a globetrotting show called Oprah’s Next Chapter.

The show is to start next year on the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN), which she co-owns with Discovery Communications and begins operations on January 1.

The new program will take over from Winfrey’s trend-setting The Oprah Winfrey Show, which first aired in 1985 and is to shut down on September 9 next year.

The format will change in that Winfrey will travel the world interviewing celebrities and other guests.

Another big change is that the queen of daytime television will reportedly be appearing in the evening.

“After 25 years and 28,000 guests, Oprah is saying goodbye to The Oprah Winfrey Show, but not goodbye to what she loves to do,” Discovery Communications said in a statement.

“In Oprah’s Next Chapter, she’ll have more riveting conversations with the people we all want to hear from, in some very unexpected places.”

Those settings will range from the Taj Mahal and Great Wall of China to her own teahouse, the announcement said. “If she can dream it, she’ll do it.”

Winfrey announced last November that she was ending her iconic daytime show.

“Twenty-five years feels right in my bones and it feels right in my spirit. It’s the perfect number,” she said.

The Oprah Winfrey Show, currently syndicated in 145 countries, has transformed Winfrey into a cultural phenomenon.

She is credited with changing the way people talk to each other, having popularised a confessional interview style that has coaxed secrets, revelations and often tears from guests of all stripes.

She is an almost uniquely influential tastemaker, whose recommendation of a book or product has an instantaneous and enormous effect.

Inquiry calls over prostituted state ward

Tasmania’s Children’s Commissioner wants an independent inquiry after revelations a 12-year-old girl was a ward of the state when she was used as a prostitute.

Hobart man Gary John Devine has been jailed for up to a decade for prostituting the girl.

It is understood at the time of the crimes the 12 year old was under a care and protection order, making the State her guardian.

Tasmania’s Children’s Commissioner Paul Mason says there needs to be an independent inquiry into the case when a new minister is sworn in.

“I think the Tasmanian public will probably want to know if anything differently could have been done to have a different outcome,” he said.

Liz Little from the Sexual Assault Support Service says the case is an example of systemic failure.

She says the community is not aware of the prevalence of sexual assault.

“The systems that are trying to deal with it are overstretched, they’re under resourced and in many ways, in terms of sexual assault, probably underskilled,” said Ms Little.

The Head of Youth and Family services Mark Byrne says he will not comment on matters before the courts.

But he says the sector’s been rebuilt significantly in recent years and is working effectively.

Prostituted girl was in state care

Child advocates are horrified at revelations that a 12-year-old girl used as a prostitute in Tasmania was a ward of the state at the time she was abused.

They have accused the child protection system of letting her down and exposing the government to legal action.

The girl’s pimp was recently jailed for up to a decade.

The Children’s Commissioner believes the government could be sued over the case.

It is now understood that she was under a care and protection order at the time of the crimes, meaning the state was her guardian.

The commissioner, Paul Mason, says that in the wake of compensation payouts to abused wards of the state, the government could be exposed to legal action in this case.

“It may be that this child has been let down by their ‘super parent’ and that their ‘super parent’ owed them a duty which has been breached,” he said.

“Maybe this child has an action for damages against the ‘super parent’, against the taxpayer.”

The Human Services Department has declined to comment due to ongoing court proceedings related to the matter.

Mr Mason has called for an urgent review of what is happening to children in state care.

He says there has been work preventing children from coming into the care system but the state must now ensure their well-being under protection.

“Last year we had this massive national apology to children who were in state care and what’s going to happen?”

“Do we wait another 40 years and then have another national apology and and so on into the future or do we do something different now?”

Barack Obama’s in-laws thought Michelle would ‘eat him alive’

London, Apr 7 (ANI): When Barack Obama first met his in-laws, they thought that their daughter Michelle would “eat him alive.”

The revelations have come from memoirs written by the First Lady’s brother Craig Robinson, called A Game Of Character.

The first couple of the United States met when Michelle, now 46, was asked to mentor Barack, two years her senior, at Chicago law firm Sidley Austin.

Basketball coach Craig, 47, said that although Barack got the approval from both his future parents-in-law, neither thought that he would be a suitable match for their feisty daughter.

After meeting the future president, Michelle’s mum Marion’s first impression was a half-hearted.

“Well, he’s tall,” the Daily Express quoted her as saying at the time.

On the other hand, her dad Fraser seemed slightly more impressed, adding: “Not a bad looking guy, either.”

But, despite the fact that the Robinsons seemed to accept their daughter’s new beau they still didn’t think the relationship would last.

And Fraser reportedly joked: “Yep, she’ll eat him alive.” (ANI)

Augusta Masters policies to protect Woods from ‘excessive media glare’

Augusta (U.S.), Mar 31(ANI): Ace American golfer Tiger Woods’ big press conference on Monday during the Augusta National would be governed by the club officials, citing Masters’ policies on media coverage.

According to reports, the press conference will be held in a small interview room, and will not be relocated to the adjacent auditorium, where all reporters have assigned seats.

It is also believed that not everybody covering the event will be granted entry to the press conference, and tournament officials will determine who gets to ask questions, and who listens outside the room.

“Masters officials expect those desiring access to exceed capacity in the interview room,” The New York Daily News quoted the Augusta National Golf Club, as saying in a statement.

“They are asking credentialed outlets who wish to have a representative considered by the Media Committee to submit the name of one credentialed reporter via e-mail,” the statement added.

The procedure certainly works in Woods’ favour, as it will limit his inquisitors when he returns from his four-month break from the game.

Woods had taken time off from the game to rebuild his marriage after a late-night car crash outside his home in Florida in November last year sparked revelations of his infidelities. (ANI)

Focus key to Tiger Wood’s success at Augusta Masters: Caddie

Washington, Mar 31 (ANI): Ace golfer Tiger Woods’ caddie Steve Williams thinks that focus is key for the World No.1 to succeed on his return during Augusta Masters after a scandalous four month break.

Williams will be carrying the disgraced Wood’s bag at his comeback appearance at the Masters next week, but said he was not expecting a crowd reaction.

“The people that go and watch Augusta, they call them patrons there, not spectators,” he said in an interview with New Zealand news channel TVNZ on Tuesday, hinting that it was this reason that Woods chose the tournament for his comeback.

“Augusta are very specific with who they let in there, so they are genuine golf fans. I don”t really expect any of those people having any problems. I think they will be very happy to see Tiger playing at Augusta where he”s been successful,” Williams said.

The Kiwi caddie said that at his 25th return to the golf course in Atlanta, he expected Woods’ ability to focus would determine his success, FOX Sports reports.

“Just focus, I think that is going to be the big thing. Tiger hasn’t played competitively in four months and hasn”t played any warm-up tournaments going into a major championship,” he said.

“They are difficult tournaments at the best of the times having not played a practice tournament or a pre-tournament, it is going to be difficult, so just to keep his focus on what we are doing, that is going to be the foremost thing in my mind.”

Woods has not competed since his victory at the Australian Masters on November 15, 2009, following his fall from grace amid revelations about his private life. (ANI)

Betting in full flow on whether Woods will hit a tree or kiss a blonde at Masters

Washington, Mar 31 (ANI): Brit bettors are putting their money on whether Tiger Woods will hit a tree on his first drive or if he”ll kiss an anonymous blonde before teeing off at the Masters.

Woods is set to make his return to golf next week at Augusta National after months of seclusion following revelations that he cheated on his wife.

“We”ll absolutely certainly take a couple of million (pounds) on it ourselves. So far, people are sensibly reluctant to part with their cash until two or three days beforehand … because once you place your bet you can”t cancel it,” CBS News quoted William Hill spokesman Rupert Adams as saying on Tuesday.

Both William Hill and Ladbrokes have Woods listed as the 4-1 favourite to win, even though he has not competed since driving into a tree outside his home in late November.

This year”s tournament starts on April 8.

Phil Mickelson is the second favorite behind Woods at 9-1, and Ernie Els is third at 10-1, according to William Hill.

But apart from the usual bets about making the cut or finishing outside the top 10, markets are open on whether he will hit the fairway on his opening drive, miss the fairway, or even hit a tree.

“We”ve got a whole host (of markets), the funnies around to the serious. Obviously, (we”ve) priced him up to win the major, to miss the cut, to have a fight with a fan on the first tee, to kiss an anonymous blonde — which doesn”t include (John) Daly, we point out,” said Ladbrokes spokesman Nick Weinberg.

But, despite any personal problems, both Adams and Weinberg said that bettors would stand behind Woods with their money.

“He could have 10 years off the sport and there”d be punters backing him. Even a 50 percent-75 percent Tiger Woods should have more than enough to see off the field,” said Weinberg.

William Hill is already offering 26 markets on Woods, and Hill said they expect to open 10 more over the weekend.

“Things like: Will he have an argument? Will he throw a club? Will he break a club in anger? Will there be a streaker on the final green? Will Elin (Nordegren) be seen in the crowd?” said Adams. (ANI)

Jude Law ‘fumes over ex wife’s tell all book’

Melbourne, March 29 (ANI): Jude Law is reportedly fuming over his former wife Sadie Frost’s upcoming autobiography.

The Alfie actor, who was married to Frost from 1997 to 2003 and shares three children with her, is said to have taken advice from solicitors over her latest career move.

“Jude has told Sadie that he wants to know exactly what is written about him,” The Daily Telegraph quoted a source as telling The Mail newspaper in the UK.

“He is very worried that some of the revelations could be damaging to his career and upsetting for their children when they are old enough to read it,” the source added. (ANI)

Johns brothers kiss and make up

Controversial rugby league personality Matthew Johns has revealed he is on speaking terms again with his brother Andrew.

The brothers, former star players in the NRL with the Newcastle Knights, had a falling out after both had endured high-profile scandals.

Matthew Johns was blogging on a News Limited website following the debut of his new television show on the Seven Network on Thursday night when he was asked a question about his relationship with Andrew.

“Joey and I will be sweet, we started talking again,” Matthew said.

Matthew alluded to some bridges being built with his brother on the new show, making several jokes about Andrew and pretending at one stage to be speaking to him on the phone.

Matthew’s return to television came less than a year after he was let go from The Footy Show in the wake of a sex scandal.

Andrew had his own problems, the player widely regarded as one of the greatest the game has seen revealing in 2007 he frequently used recreational drugs during his career and was bipolar.

It was suggested the brothers had not spoken for six months because Matthew felt Andrew did support him during his crisis the way he did during Andrew’s revelations.

Almost 600,000 viewers in Sydney and Brisbane watched The Matty Johns Show with the league-based program out-rating Nine’s rival The Footy Show by about 300,000 viewers.

Police delay introduction of new database

Victoria Police has delayed the installation of a new system to replace the troubled LEAP information database.

The LEAP system stores crime reports and people’s criminal histories.

The new system, called LINK, was due to be rolled out this year, following numerous revelations of inappropriate use of the LEAP system.

Victoria Police says there is no problem with the LINK system, but they have found that integrating it with over 20 other police systems is more costly and technically challenging than originally envisaged.

integrating the 20-plus systems that need to be joined with LINK will be a more technically challenging and costly process than was envisioned in the original business case

The replacement program has been suspended for six months.

Michael Vanderheide, the executive director of infrastructure and IT, says it is important to get this technology right.

“It is far better that we identify these issues now, and address them, before we introduce the system and train our members in its use,” he said.

“The current LEAP system remains adequate and we will work to address these issues as quickly as possible. We are committed to finding a solution that allows us to move forward without needing to invest significant funds.”

Woods can take Augusta heat: Montgomerie

London, Mar.25 (ANI): European Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie has backed Tiger Woods to thrive under the pressure when he returns from his four-month break from the game at the Masters next month.

Woods took time off from the game to rebuild his marriage after a late-night car crash outside his home in Florida sparked revelations of his infidelities, but Montgomerie is certain he will cope at Augusta.

“When I heard Tiger say that he is nervous to come back, that”s the first time I”ve ever heard him say those words,” Montgomerie told the Orlando Sentinel.

“So it”s very shrewd of him to have come back in the most controlled atmosphere possible. The patrons [at Augusta] are very knowledgeable and will respect him as the golfer that he is, and I think that there will be no issue at all. I think he”ll get over his nerves,” The Independent quoted him, as saying further.

“He”s the most focused sportsman I”ve ever known, and I think that he will adapt accordingly,” Montgomerie said. (ANI)

Italy prelate sees campaign against Church over abuse

The Catholic Church is being unfairly singled out for criticism of sexual abuse of children by priests and will not tolerate campaigns to discredit it, the powerful head of Italy’s bishops said on Monday.

Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco spoke as the Vatican tried to stem a scandal gripping the Church that has swept across Europe, with more revelations of sexual abuse of children by priests over several decades surfacing almost daily.

“For a long time, the phenomenon of paedophilia has been tragically widespread in different sectors and various categories of people and various places, even non-Catholic,” he said in a speech to Italian bishops.

Bagnasco, repeating a defence by many churchmen recently, said he did not want to “minimise or relativise” the seriousness of paedophilia cases in the Church but that it was important to recognise what he called the general scope of the problem.

As the Catholic Church has been swept up by paedophilia scandals in recent years, churchmen have said the problem exists throughout society and in much higher percentages in families.

But critics have dismissed this view, saying priests and nuns entrusted with the care of children should be held to much higher moral standards. They have also accused the Church of concealing abuses for decades under a blanket of secrecy.

Speaking two days after Pope Benedict apologised to victims of sexual abuse in Ireland, Bagnasco said the Church was “not afraid of the truth, however painful and detestable” but would not accept any “generalised campaigns to discredit it”.

SCANDAL SPREADING

As the scandal has spread in a number of European countries, including Austria, the Netherlands, Switzerland and the pope’s native Germany, some bishops have lambasted the media, accusing it of being hostile and unfair.

“The cover-up has gone on for centuries, not just in the Church … it’s going on today in families, in communities, in societies. Why are you singling out the Church?” Bishop Christopher Jones of Elphin, Ireland, said last week.

Bishop Gerhard Ludwing Mueller of Regensburg, Germany, decried “a campaign against the Church” in the media and accused journalists of biased reporting.

“They (the media) are manipulating the people who sit in front of a television or open up a newspaper with their twisted and shortened reports,” he said.

The pope’s letter to the people of Ireland was in response to a damning government report of cover-ups of sexual abuse of children by priests for decades in Dublin diocese.

Benedict and Italy’s bishops found support on Monday from Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, said in a statement the pope and the Church were victims of “prejudiciously hostile feelings”.

There have been relatively few reports of child abuse by Italian clergy but a senior Vatican official said in a newspaper interview this month he fears there may be more.

“So far the dimensions of the problem (in Italy) don’t seem dramatic, although what worries me is a certain culture of silence that I see as still too widespread here,” said Monsignor Charles Scicluna, the Vatican’s prosecutor for sex abuse cases.
