Al Qaeda plot to attack FIFA WC unearthed

London, May 18 (ANI): Al-Qaeda second-in-command Ayman al-Zawahiri is planning to carry out a terror strike at the eagerly awaited FIFA World Cup 2010, a recently arrested Al Qaeda operative has disclosed.

The operative, Azzam Saleh Misfar al-Qahtani is a former Saudi Army Colonel and has previously been behind two suicide bombings in Baghdad, and had been appointed as the security chief for al-Qaeda”s local branch in Iraq.

It has emerged that Englands opening match against the US was the likely target.

“He participated in the planning of a terrorist act in South Africa during the World Cup. He was in contact with the terrorist Ayman al-Zawahiri to organise the plan hatched by al-Qaeda,” the Telegraph quoted Major General Qassim Atta, head of security in Baghdad as saying.

This revelation will probably lead to a review of security arrangements in South Africa, security forces there had hitherto been concentrating on curtailing violent crime for which the country is notorious.

There are precautions against terror strikes but the police say they are still investigating the claims.

“The South African police are still working on getting confirmation,” Nonkululeko Mbatha, a spokeswoman, said. (ANI)

Nirupama Pathak”s clothes to undergo forensic tests in Ranchi

Ranchi, May 11 (ANI): The clothes of Delhi-based journalist Nirupama Pathak, who was found dead in mysterious circumstances at her home in Jharkhand”s Koderma District on April 29, have been sent for forensic tests to Ranchi.

Meanwhile, Nirupama”s boyfriend Priyabhanshu Ranjan”s family has demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into her death.

On May 9, Ranjan”s parents claimed to have mobile proof that could nail the complicity of Nirupama”s parents in what they say is murder.

In a startling claim, Ranjan”s father said he had Nirupama”s last SMS in which she said that she had been locked inside a bathroom and was not being allowed to go out.

He also said that a similar message had come from his son, who was in Delhi.

The revelation came after Koderma Police served notices to three doctors who had performed a post mortem on Nirupama.

The court directed the police to file a First Information Report (FIR) against Ranjan, following charges levelled by Nirupama”s arrested mother Subha Pathak.

Nirupama”s mother has described her daughter” death as a suicide case.

However, the post-mortem report revealed that Pathak died due to asphyxia as a result of smothering. A 10 to 12 week-old foetus was also found during the autopsy. (ANI)

Osama bin Laden has a page on Facebook

London, Apr 16(ANI): Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden is reportedly using social networking website Facebook as a platform to show videos and speeches to Islamic militants.

According to reports, Osama has a page named “The leader of the Mujahideen, Osama bin Laden” and his address is given as “the mountains of the world”.

Following the revelation, security experts have urged Facebook’s US office to shut down the page.

The account became active less than a month ago, but had already attracted nearly 1,000 extremists, and although the language used is Arabic, messages in English have started to appear, The Sun reports.

Internet terror expert and author Neil Doyle said: “Bin Laden, via his supporters, is clearly taunting his pursuers.”

Since 2001, Osama and his organization have been major targets of the United States’ War on Terror.

There is a 16 million pound reward for his capture, and he along with other Al-Qaeda leaders are believed to be hiding near the border of Afghanistan and Pakistan’s Federally Administered Tribal Areas.

Dell: We May Never Build Another Data Center Computing

Data centers are a booming business, of course, as we report on all the time at GreenerComputing. With the rise of online shopping, telecommuting, virtual meetings, and the general spread of technology through everyday business activities, more and more companies are building or expanding their computing facilities.

But at the Fortune Brainstorm Green conference happening this week, Dell made the amazing revelation that, by waffling on their data center expansion plans, the company realized they might never need to build another new data center.

Robin Johnson, Dell’s CIO, and Dane Parker, its Global Facilities Lead, took part in the virtual conference (you can attend it online through WebEx) yesterday to talk about how the greenest data center is the one you never build.

Dell surveyed its customer base about demand for new hardware and data center floor space, and found that 65 percent of its customers were out of space and considering new facilities. Despite being in the same position as their customers, Dell held off, a move Johnson described as a cost-mitigation play, buying a year’s worth of time to think the decision through while renting out a colocation facility.

“The thing that happened in that year is that, one, technology gets cheaper, smaller and more powerful year over year,” Johnson said. “And the other key was virtualization, which I describe as carpooling.”

By virtualizing their servers, Dell was able to go from an industry average 12-18 percent utilization for its servers to 42 percent utilization, a number that Parker says is still “going north.” As a result, “we’ve doubled our workload at no extra power, and no extra servers,” Johnson said.
!–pagebreak–
It wasn’t as simple as just deciding to go virtual rather than expand compute facilities — especially for an IT hardware company. But in digging into the costs that Dell’s two Austin, Texas, data centers were responsible for, and the costs to build a new data center, executives realized that there had to be another way.

“So we asked, is there something we can do to get more capacity out of that same infrastructure,” Parker explained, “and can we get efficiency savings by going to virtualization?”

As Dell kicked around the options, virtualization technology was improving in effectiveness, as technology is wont to do. That steady progress, coupled with an initiative led by Johnson to identify and remove underutilized and outdated assets, made Dell’s no-new-data-centers future possible.

“You’ve just halved the power demand I have,” Parker said, “and maybe we don’t need to build another one — now it looks like we can wait another 10, 15, 20 years to build another one.”

The process is more complex than simply virtualizing everything possible, of course. And Johnson laid out how IT hardware firms can continue to benefit from companies using ever-fewer servers.

“It wasn’t simply putting more on each box, it was putting in the latest and greatest box,” Johnson said. “Those two things are what’s driving the change.”

By replacing the oldest 25 percent of its servers every year and upgrading to the “latest and greatest” models, Dell can essentially recoup its capital expenditures every year through reduced energy costs — increased energy efficiency offsets the costs of buying new hardware on a rolling four-year refresh cycle.

Fortune is archiving and streaming at least portions of its Brainstorm Green conference online; you can watch the entire hour-long discussion from Dell’s Robin Johnson and Dane Parker, as well as much more, at Fortune-ls.WebEx.com.

PM’s Department ‘kept insulation warning secret’

The Federal Opposition says there is now a smoking gun showing the Prime Minister’s Department was warned the home insulation program could cause electrocutions.

The Australian Financial Review has obtained the minutes of a meeting in February last year when the Prime Minister’s Department was warned of the danger.

Mr Rudd says the former minister responsible for the insulation scheme, Peter Garrett, already referred to the meeting in question.

“The meeting that you refer to certainly was referenced in Minister Garrett’s statement to Parliament on February 11 this year,” he said.

But Coalition environment spokesman Greg Hunt says Mr Rudd has been extensively questioned on the issue and never revealed the details of the meeting.

“The revelation that the Prime Minister’s Department, at the highest levels, had warnings as early as February last year of electrocution under the home insulation program is a bombshell,” he said.

“These warnings have been kept secret by the Prime Minister and his department.”

Mr Hunt says Mr Rudd must call a judicial inquiry this week.

“The Prime Minister has kept material from the Parliament, under questioning his senior officials have apparently been gagged,” Mr Hunt said.

“What we want now is a full judicial inquiry into the home insulation program without delay and we want the Prime Minister to make the full information available and to appear before the inquiry.”

Federal Environment Minister Peter Garrett says the Government did take into account early warnings it received of electrocutions under the home insulation program.

Mr Garrett says he has been open about the warnings the Government received and how it responded.

“The advice that came through at that meeting and many others was taken account of in the development of a risk framework for rolling out that program, and that’s been clearly enunciated by me and my statements to Parliament and subsequently,” he said.

Top cop defends action over racist emails

Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Simon Overland has defended his crackdown against the circulation of racist and pornographic emails among officers.

About 100 officers are being investigated for the alleged mis-use of the police email system – one of whom was a sergeant who took his own life in Healesville on Monday.

The Police Association says Mr Overland’s approach assumes targeted officers are guilty, but Mr Overland says that is just spin and he has had to take strong and decisive action over the matter.

“This is about maintaining the confidence of the Victorian community in Victoria Police,” he said.

“How can a community have confidence in this organisation if we allow racist, sexist, pornographic material to circulate freely around the organisation? We can’t do it.”

Commissioner Overland says the emails distributed on the Victoria Police email system are “disturbing, offensive and gross”.

“There are quite a large number of police officers who have become involved. They won’t all face dismissal. But it is quite widespread,” he said.

Commissioner Overland will not describe the emails, but says they do not contain any illegal material.

But he says they do include racism and pornography and the Police Ethical Standards Department has been investigating the matter for months.

“The material we’re talking about, I believe, is highly offensive and would shock the community,” he said.

“There are various and varying degrees of involvement and we’ll need to treat each case on its merits.”

Culture of racism?

News of the emails comes just a week after a report by community lawyers detailed allegations from members of Melbourne’s African community of police abuse and assault.

Melbourne University’s Dr Yin Paradies is an expert in the effects of racism. He says the revelation about the racist emails could be seen as more evidence of a culture of racism in the police force.

“We want a police force that’s impartial and that treats people from every ethnic and racial group fairly,” he said.

He says the way the news of this scandal is received by the public could have the potential to undermine good police work.

“And it would have the potential to undermine trust in the police force and respect for police and the integrity of their work,” he said.

The spotlight has also turned to how Commissioner Overland is handling the matter.

He has issued two senior officers with what is known as a section 68, which demands that they justify why they should be allowed to keep their jobs.

Head of the Police Association Greg Davies says it is not fair.

“It sounds a little like the judge is passing sentencing without hearing any evidence,” he said.

Senior Sergeant Davies says it is a guilty-until-proven-innocent approach and it shows the Chief Commissioner has too much discretion.

“We’re talking now about career police officers who can’t just walk down the street to the next police factory and sign on for more work,” he said.

“If it’s a one-off incident of a minor nature we don’t think that they should be automatically told they’re going to be dismissed, unless they can convince the Chief Commissioner otherwise.”

A woman who phoned ABC local radio in Melbourne today went further. She says her husband worked with the sergeant who shot himself at Healesville Police Station this week.

“He was given the letter. Now it was made very clear to … all the police officers within the eastern region. A meeting was held with senior inspectors and it was very clear to this deceased officer that he could either resign with his benefits or he’d be sacked without them,” the caller said.

But Commissioner Overland says the investigation has not been heavy-handed.

“I understand that I have very clear responsibilities around the use of these powers; that if I misuse these powers or don’t use them in an appropriate way it won’t survive appeal and will be overturned,” he said.

“I think there are appropriate safeguards in place. This is not action that I’ve taken lightly and I never take this action lightly. But I think in the circumstances it was appropriate.”

And he has the backing of Victorian Premier John Brumby.

I was living a life of a lie, says Tiger Woods

New York, March 22 (ANI): Tiger Woods has admitted that he “was living a life of a lie” in his first TV interview after the exposure of his sexcapades.

The golfer said, in dueling interviews on ESPN and the Golf Channel, that confessing his misbehaviour to his wife Elin and family was extremely difficult.

“They”ve been very tough. Because I hurt them the most. Those are the two people in my life who I”m closest to, and to say the things that I”ve done, truthfully to them, is … honestly was … very painful,” the New York Daily News quoted him as saying.

ESPN reporter Tom Rinaldi questioned him on November 26 crash outside his house that consequently led to the exposure of his extra-marital affairs.

Woods replied: “You know it”s all in the police report.”

He also admitted in the Golf Channel interview that he had lost control over his “disgusting behavior”.

He said: “Yeah, I tried to stop, and I couldn”t stop. It was just, it was horrific.

“I”ve had a lot of low points. Just when I thought they couldn”t get lower, they got lower.”

On being quizzed why he married Elin Nordegren, Woods replied: “Because I loved her. I loved Elin with everything I have.

“And that”s something that makes me feel even worse, that I did this to someone I loved that much.”

Woods further revealed that his wife”s reaction after the revelation was “shock” and “anger.”

He said: “She was hurt, she was hurt. Very hurt. And, you know, she had every right to be, and I”m as disappointed as everyone else in my own behavior because I can”t believe I actually did that to the people I loved.

“I was living a life of a lie. I really was. And I was doing a lot of things, like I said, that hurt a lot of people.

“Stripping away denial and rationalization, you start coming to the truth of who you really are, and that can be very ugly.

“But then again, when you face it and you start conquering it and you start living up to it … the strength that I feel now, I”ve never felt that type of strength.”

However, Woods said the days he spent at a Mississippi sex rehabilitation clinic helped him.

He said: “A lot has transpired in my life. A lot of ugly things have happened.

“I”ve done some pretty bad things in my life. And uh, [they] all came to a head. But now, after treatment, going for inpatient treatment for 45 days and more outpatient treatment, um, I”m getting back to my old roots.”

The sportsman added that he “strayed from his core values” and his practice of Buddhism and meditation.

He insisted his father, Earl, who died in 2006, would “be very disappointed in me.”

He said: “That”s one of the things I miss, I miss his guidance, wish I could have had his guidance through all this to have him help straighten me up,” he said. “I know he would”ve done it.”

Meanwhile, Woods, is set to make a comeback on April 8 at the Masters in Augusta, Ga..

He ended: “It would be nice to hear a couple claps here and there. But also hope they clap for birdies, too.” (ANI)

China says missing Panchen Lama living in Tibet

Beijing, Mar.8 (ANI): China has claimed the missing Panchen Lama is living in Tibet.

The son of a Tibetan herder, Gendun Choekyi Nyima was only 5 when the exiled Dalai Lama selected him as the reincarnation of the Panchen Lama.

Police swooped on the boy’s village in a county to the north of Lhasa and, pro-Tibet exiles say, removed the child and his parents.

He has not been seen or heard from since.

But Tibet’s new governor, Padma Choling, revealed yesterday that the young man, now 20, is still living in Tibet, where “his brothers and sisters are at university or are doing regular work”.

He gave no hint as to the family’s whereabouts but repeated the Communist Party’s mantra: “As far as I know, his family and he are now living a very good life in Tibet. He and his family are reluctant to be disturbed. They want to live an ordinary life.”

The information amounts to a revelation compared with the secrecy that has surrounded the life of Gendun for the 15 years since he vanished and was described by human rights groups as the youngest political prisoner in the world, reports The Times. (ANI)

Muslims in Lucknow offer ‘Alvida Namaz’ before Eid

Lucknow, Sep 18(ANI): Muslims gathered in huge numbers at several mosques of Lucknow on Friday to offer the ‘Alvida Namaz’ marking the last Friday prayers of the holy month of Ramadan.

“We prayed to the Lord to raise the financial status of Muslims and also eradicate all their problems. In India, Hindu and Muslims have been living together for several centuries and we want them to be like this in future,” said Moulvi Faizul Rehman, an Islamic cleric at a mosque in Lucknow.

Highlighting the significance of the ‘Alvida Namaz’, Mohammad Sayeed, a Namazi said that it is the reason why thousands of Muslim from across the city gather to offer prayers.

“During Ramadan if we participate in the ‘Alvida Namaz’ and offer our prayers, then we get a reward for it and it will usher prosperity to us,” Sayeed said.

Ramadan, the ninth month of the Hijri lunar calendar, commemorates the revelation of Quran, Islam’s holy book, and has traditionally been a time of religious fervour, settling old disputes and behaving charitably towards neighbours.

Fasting during Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam. Considered auspicious for prayers, Muslims observe the month-long fasting named ‘Roza’.

They believe this secures them a place in heaven and also brings them face to face with Allah, the Almighty, on the day of ‘Kayamat’.

The end of Ramadan heralds the festival of Eid-ul-fitr. (ANI)

MJ called dad to help deal with ‘bully’ music bosses, says La Toya

Washington, September 18 (ANI): Michael Jackson’s sister La Toya has revealed that the late singer called his father Joe to help him deal with music executives.

The revelation comes as a surprise as the King of Pop had been open about his troubled relationship with his dad.

“Michael had a wonderful relationship with my father,” Contactmusic quoted La Toya as saying.

The ‘Thriller’ singer apparently wanted his father to deal with music bosses of his future shows.

She said: ” About two or three weeks before he passed he was having this really big meeting with all these people that were working with him and he said, ‘Joseph, I need you to come, I need you to be there because I’m not liking anything these people are doing with me, I want you to be there and tell them like it is.’ He even wrote a note to say, ‘I must call Joseph to have him there.’” (ANI)

Jordan claims a famous celeb raped her

London, Sept 16 (ANI): Katie Price has claimed that she was raped by a famous man before she married ex-hubby Peter Andre.

The 31-year-old glamour girl had recently revealed she was raped when she was younger, but had not named her assaulter.

The Sun quoted Jordan as saying: “A famous celebrity raped me and Peter knows who it was.

“It was years ago, before I was with Pete, and my friends and family knew about it at the time.”

Jordan has refused to comment any further on the issue but her revelation has kept her pals guessing.

A friend said: “We were stunned as it makes everyone feel really paranoid. Katie has always been a party animal and enjoyed wild nights out with loads of blokes.

“It’s horrifying to think that someone attacked her in this way.”

However, ex-hubby Andre claims to know nothing about Jordan’s rape ordeal

He said to a pal: “Once again, Katie is saying things that don’t make sense to me.

“First she says she was raped, now she’s upping the ante by claiming it was a celebrity. If she had been raped, why didn’t she report it to the police? It’s a very serious matter.”

But Jordan insists he knows about it.

She said: “He’s being really cruel. He knows exactly who did it.” (ANI)

US taking Musharraf’s expose on aid use against India seriously

Washington, Sep.15 (ANI): The United States has said that it is taking revelations by former Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf that aid provided by America for the war against terrorism was diverted during his tenure to strengthen defences against India seriously.

State Department spokesman Ian Kelly told reporters here on Monday that Washington takes all such allegations seriously and there is a procedure to investigate any violation, diversion of its aid by any country. But Kelly refused to confirm if any investigation in this regard was already on.

He also said that the allegations were not specific and as of now the US was not aware of any such violations.

“This is a former President who has made these allegations. We take seriously any allegations like this. But simply we don’t have the details to be able to respond to the allegations,” Kelly said at a news briefing.

In an interview to a Pakistani news channel, Musharraf admitted that he had violated the rules governing the use of the military aid, but justified his action, saying he had “acted in the best interest of Pakistan”.

India’s Minister of State for External Affairs, Shashi Tharoor, said Musharraf’s revelation did not come as a surprise.

“We have for some years now arguing that the only problem we have with the US military aid to Pakistan is its misuse against us,” Tharoor said in New Delhi. (ANI)

Peter Andre holds family barbecue to celebrate divorce

London, September 14 (ANI): Singer Peter Andre reportedly celebrated his divorce with Katie Price by arranging a barbecue with family and friends.

The party was hosted at his Brighton pad and apparently the ‘Mysterious Girl’ hitmaker laid on a huge platter of Greek “Souvla” goodies.

He hailed the divorce as the end of his “marriage from hell”.

“It’s my first day off work in ages. I’ve been making a big lunch for family and friends,” the Daily Star quoted him as saying.

“My friend Ryan came over to help with the cooking, making jerk chicken and lamb stew,” the singer added.

The pop star’s kids Junior, four, and Princess Tiaamii, two, were also present.

Friends revealed that Andre was sad when his marriage collapsed but has been trying to rebuild his life.

One said: “He was really down for the first few months, not eating and not wanting to do anything, but he’s trying to rebuild his life now.”

Meanwhile, Andre’s new album Revelation has hit stores. (ANI)

NSW Police boss involved in breastfeeding ban is a woman

Melbourne, Sep 11 (ANI): The New South Wales Police boss, who forced a breastfeeding mum to work overtime for every minute she spent expressing milk, has been reported to be a woman.

The revelation came as Women’s Minister Verity Firth told all public service agencies to review practices to ensure they were providing support to breastfeeding mums.

The female sergeant told her civilian employee that she was not entitled to paid breaks, and denied her access to a private room, all in violation of an official State Government policy that is ignored throughout almost all of the public service.

However, it is suspected that the woman officer may have been overcompensating to fit into a blokey culture, with experts likening aggressive women in uniform to “religious converts”.

Feminist Eva Cox said the sergeant herself was probably the victim of a male-dominated culture, suggesting that she was trying so hard to fit in that she was tougher on women than her male colleagues.

“The women who get up through the system are the women who are really supportive of the system – they’re like religious converts,” the Daily Telegraph quoted Cox as saying.

“They’re scared to behave in any way soft or feminine and it makes them harder on other women than blokes,” she stated.

However, NSW Police Assistant Commissioner Mark Jenkins said that both genders were always treated equally in the Force.

“Police who rise up through the ranks of the NSW Police Force do so because they are the best people for the job. Gender is irrelevant,” he said.

NSW Police is now developing a new breastfeeding policy, and is taking steps to address the employee’s complaints – including a request that all the overtime she worked be reinstated.

The Public Service Association has lodged an action in the IRC seeking to enforce the Government’s 12-year-old policy supporting new mums. (ANI)

VHP leader accuses Advani of using Ayodhya issue for personal gains

New Delhi, Sep. 9 (ANI): Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader Ashok Singhal on Wednesday accused BJP leader LK Advani of taking out the Rath Yatra for personal political gain.

Advani, he said, should now think about stepping down from the post of Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha.

He also noted that the BJP had deviated from its founding policies and that is the reason for its apparent ‘sinking’.

Singhal’s statements coincide with the times when the saffron party is facing rough weather and controversies have become an order of the day.

The no-show in Lok Sabha polls, revelation on Advani’s lie on the Kandhar episode, Jaswant Singh’s controversial book on Mohammad Ali Jinnah and his subsequent expulsion from the party are the several episodes which hit the party’s image badly. (ANI)
