BP spill fund chief vows to pay claims quickly

June 20 (Reuters) – The independent administrator of the $20 billion fund set up by British energy giant BP Plc (BP.L) (BP.N) to compensate victims of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill vowed on Sunday to make sure every eligible claim is quickly paid.

Appearing on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” administrator Kenneth Feinberg also rejected Republican U.S. Representative Joe Barton’s complaint last week that the fund amounts to a government “shakedown” of BP for the worst U.S. oil spill in history.

“I don’t think it helps to politicize this program,” Feinberg added.”

Obama touts healthcare reform benefit to business

(Reuters) – President Barack Obama on Thursday touted the immediate benefits small businesses will receive from his healthcare reforms, in his second speech this week promoting the sweeping plan to a skeptical public.

U.S. | Barack Obama | Health | Healthcare Reform

Opinion polls show many voters are unhappy with the healthcare overhaul amid high unemployment and a still-sluggish economy, and could punish Obama’s Democratic Party in mid-term congressional elections in November.

In his speech, Obama reiterated his message that the plan is part of his program to boost the economy and employment.

“I want you to know we are working every single day to spur job creation and to turn this economy around,” Obama told a crowd of some 2,500 people in Maine.

“That’s why we worked so hard over the last year to lift one of the biggest burdens facing middle-class families and small business owners, and that is the crushing cost of healthcare right here in America,” he said to applause.

The 35 percent tax credit for small businesses, available from the start of 2010, is part of a $940 billion package of changes to the $2.5 trillion healthcare industry that represents the largest U.S. social policy shake-up in decades.

The White House said the credit, which rises to 50 percent of healthcare premiums in 2014 to help offset higher costs, would save small businesses $40 billion by 2019, according to estimates by the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office.

Obama urged Americans to see what benefits they experience from the new law before they judge it.

“It’s been a week, folks,” he said. “So before we find out if people like health care reform, we should wait to see what happens when we actually put it into place.”

Democrats, who control both the House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate, passed the healthcare legislation without a single Republican vote.

MID-TERM ELECTIONS

Republicans hope they can turn the issue into a vote-winner. Polls show a majority of the country fear the reform will cost too much and invite unwelcome government intrusion into their lives.

“The timing couldn’t be worse for a bill that will make it even harder to create private-sector jobs, and harder for small businesses to comply with … a thicket of new rules,” said Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell.

Obama aimed squarely at insurance companies and rival Republicans in praising the healthcare bill’s passage as a victory over special interests and misinformation.

“There’s been a lot of misinformation spread about health reform. There’s been a lot of fear-mongering, a lot of overheated rhetoric,” he said.

“You turned on the news, you’d see that those same folks who were hollering about it before it passed, they’re still hollering about how the world will end because we passed this bill.”

Obama, who noted that ideas from Maine’s Republican Senator Olympia Snowe had been included in the law, repeated his challenge to Republicans to “go for it” if they wanted to make repealing it a strategy to win votes in November.

“If they want to have a fight, I welcome that fight, because I don’t believe the American people are going to put the insurance industry back in the driver’s seat,” he said.

A Gallup poll released on Thursday showed registered voters prefer the Republican to the Democratic candidate in their districts by 47 percent to 44 percent in the mid-term congressional elections. It was the first time Republicans have led in 2010 election preferences since Gallup began such weekly tracking last month.

The poll results came after the House passed the healthcare legislation on March 21. Obama later signed it into law.

“The shift toward Republicans raises the possibility that the healthcare bill had a slightly negative impact on the Democrats’ political fortunes in the short run,” Gallup said in a statement.

Some big U.S. businesses have also started to tally up the financial hit they say they will take because of the healthcare law. Corporate America says the law raises their taxes, but the White House says it merely closes a loophole.

U.S. hopes to sign arms deal April 8 – Sen. Lugar

The United States hopes to sign a landmark nuclear arms reduction treaty with Russia on April 8, a U.S. senator said on Wednesday after a briefing with President Barack Obama on the status of talks on the pact.

“April 8 in Prague, that’s at least the hope that I think they have,” for signing the new START treaty, Senator Richard Lugar, a Republican, told Reuters after he and Democratic Senator John Kerry were briefed by Obama.

“The president is fairly confident that he will be heading towards a signing,” said Lugar, who will play a key role in Senate ratification of the treaty.

Lugar said he thought he would be able to support the treaty and that missile defense would not be part of the pact.

President to Meet With Key Senators Next Week About Immigration

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama plans to focus attention on immigration next week by meeting at the White House with two senators crafting a bill on the issue.

White House spokesman Nicholas Shapiro said Obama will meet with Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York and Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina on Monday.

The president is “looking forward to hearing more about their efforts toward producing a bipartisan bill,” Shapiro said Friday.

The meeting will be the first Obama has had with Schumer and Graham on the proposal they are developing since they began focusing on it last year.

Immigration has taken a back seat to the economy and health care on Obama’s agenda since he took office just over a year ago. Immigrants and their advocates — promised by then-candidate Obama that he would tackle the issue in his first year as president — have been growing frustrated by the inaction.

Several community groups planned to vent some of that frustration in a news conference Monday in Washington. The groups also are trying to organize tens of thousands of people from around the country for a March 21 demonstration in Washington.

“The president’s commitment to fixing our broken immigration system remains unwavering,” Shapiro said.

Sarah Palin’s fan pays £39k to dine with her!

London, September 19 (ANI): Former US vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin has fans who are ready to shell out big bucks just to have dinner with her.

One of the politician’s admirers is paying massive 39,000 pounds to dine with the Republican.

Cathy Maples, of Huntsville, Alabama, is the person who made the highest bid for the dinner in an eBay auction meant for a charity that aids wounded veterans.

It is part of the Ride 2 Recovery programme, which supports wounded veterans through cycling, the Daily Express reports.

Cathy owns a defence contracting company and supports the military.

She said she was a “big advocate” for Palin, and would love to see the Republican as president.

Organisers suggested the winner will have to foot the travel bill to meet up with Palin, most likely in Alaska. (ANI)

RPI activists ransack Congress office in Mumbai

Mumbai, Sep 18(ANI): Activists of Republican Party of India (RPI), a regional party in Maharashtra, on Friday ransacked the Congress office in Mumbai.

The activists were protesting against eviction of their senior leader and former Lok Sabha Member of Parliament, Ramdas Athawale from his official bungalow in New Delhi.

Athawale was evicted for overstaying after he lost the recently concluded Lok Sabha poll.

RPI activists raised slogans against Congress President Sonia Gandhi and broke windowpanes of the party office.

“I was in office of NSUI (National Students Union of India) when I came to know that alleged workers of RPI are ransacking Congress office. I was surprised that policemen standing outside remained mere spectator even though I told them they are attacking our office,” said Sadaf Aboli, President of National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), student wing of Congress.

According to reports, the police also arrested some of the activists. (ANI)

Wilson apologises for calling Obama ‘a liar’

Washington, Sep 10 (ANI): South Carolina Republican Joe Wilson has apologized for heckling and calling President Barack Obama ‘a liar’.

“This evening I let my emotions get the best of me when listening to the President’s remarks regarding the coverage of illegal immigrants in the Health Care Bill. While I disagree with the President’s statement, my comments were inappropriate and regrettable. I extend sincere apologies to the President for this lack of civility,” Politico quoted Wilson, as saying.

The comment from Wilson could be heard throughout the House chamber in response to Obama’s remark that his health insurance plan would not extend benefits to illegal immigrants.

“I’ve never seen anything like that before. We do not invite the president of the United States into the House of Representatives and hurl insults,” said Republican Earl Pomeroy.

According to Wilson’s office, he called the White House after the speech to apologise to Obama, speaking with Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel.

The 62-year-old Wilson, who was elected to the House in 2001, previously found himself in the spotlight for attacking 2004 Democratic presidential nominee John F. Kerry over his 1971 testimony criticizing the Vietnam War. (ANI)

Prime Minister arrives in Paris

Paris, July 14 (ANI): Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh arrived in Paris late on Monday night to participate in the National Day celebrations of the Republic of France.

Dr. Singh was received by French Justice Minister Michele Alliot-Marie and Ambassador of France to India Bonnafont. He was presented a Guard of Honour by the republican guards. National anthem of both the countries were also played.

Dr. Singh, who will be the Chief Guest of Honour at France’s National Day celebrations on Tuesday, said: “It’s a great honour and a great privilege for me to be in this beautiful country on France’s National Day.

I am very grateful to President Nicolas Sarkozy for giving me this rare honour. India and France are partners in development. We have very good relations with France. Its my ambition to give a further push to our strategic partnership.”

The Prime Minister is the first Indian leader to be bestowed this honour, as France does not have a tradition of inviting foreign heads of state to be chief guests at their Bastille Day or National Day celebrations.

This day commemorates the storming of the Bastille in 1789, which was then seen as a symbol of a rising modern nation.

He will witness the contingent of 400 soldiers from the Indian Army, Navy and Air force march down the Champs-Elysees Avenue along with French infantry troops and motorised troops.

This is the for the first time that all the three services – Army, Navy and Air Force will taking part in the National Day celebrations of another country.

Among the 400 personnel, 300 would be part of the marching contingent, while the rest are from the respective bands.

A prominent feature of the band contingent will be the drummers and bagpipers who would be playing Indian martial music.

Inviting friendly nations to send their troops to participate the Bastille Day parade is a recent phenomenon.

In 2004, during the centenary of the Entente Cordiale, British troops comprising of Grenadier Guards, the Cavalry Regiment and Royal Marines and Royal Horse Artillery, led the parade in Paris for the first time.

The Indian armed forces participation will mark the commemoration of Indian army’s association with its French counterpart during the two World Wars.

The parade itself is a gala event held at what can best be described as the Rajpath of Paris. It begins from the Arc de Triomphe to the Place de la Concorde.

The number of contingents participating in the parade are not as many as seen in the Republic Day parade every January 26 in New Delhi.

While the loudest applause in Delhi is reserved for the ex-servicemen contingent, at the Bastille Day parade it is the fireservice men who get the loudest applause. By Smita Prakash (ANI)

Ex-Miss USA says Sarah Palin can offer ‘so much more’

Washington, July 10 (ANI): Responding to Sarah Palin’s resignation from the post of Alaska Governor, former Miss USA Shanna Moakler has said that the former Republican Vice-Presidential candidate can still do “so much more”.

The reality star has said that Palin certainly has the potential to really make an impact.

“I think she can make a lot more money if she resigns, she has a lot more to offer us than her current position,” Fox News quoted Moakler as saying at Diddy’s White Party over the weekend.

Moakler hit headlines earlier this year when she resigned from her position at the co-executive director of the Miss California pageant, after Donald Trump announced that the controversial Carrie Prejean could keep her crown.

Miss California Prejean came under fire after she voiced her “traditional” belief against same-sex marriage during the interview portion of the Miss USA pageant. (ANI)

US Congressman opposes proposed American legend title for MJ

Washington, July 9 (ANI): A US Congressman has insisted he intends to oppose plans to honour Michael Jackson as an official American legend.

Republican Peter King recently slammed the King of Pop, tagging the late star as a “pervert, child molester, paedophile” during a CNN interview.

And he insists he intends to fight the motion to declare the icon “an American legend and musical icon (and) a world humanitarian”, saying he will do “whatever I have to do”, reports Contactmusic.

Texas Democrat Sheila Jackson Lee, who represented Congress and the U.S. Black Caucus at the Jackson memorial on Tuesday, announced that she would lead the motion.

She also showed off a framed copy of the motion, which was to be debated at the U.S. House of Representatives. (ANI)

Jackson family split delays funeral

Los Angeles, July 10 (DPA) A family split over where to bury Michael Jackson is delaying the funeral of the late King of Pop who died two weeks ago, ABC News reported Thursday.
Mystery has surrounded burial plans since Jackson’s casket was whisked to a secret location following his globally televised memorial service Tuesday.

The ABC report said Jackson’s body was returned to the Forest Lawn memorial home while the family sorts out the burial imbroglio.

Jackson’s brothers are determined to get permission to bury him at his Neverland estate. But his mother, Katherine Jackson, wants to find an alternative resting place that honours Jackson’s wish made after he was acquitted of child molestation charges in 2005, never to return to his home.

Jackson’s brothers have already begun the lengthy process of obtaining permits to bury Jackson at Neverland, according to the report. But local officials said they have not had any contact with the Jackson family regarding the burial.

Jackson’s supporters meanwhile appear to have an uphill battle to get him declared an “American legend” in an official congressional resolution.

House Resolution 600 praises the work and life of Jackson, “honouring an American legend and musical icon” and was proposed by Representative Sheila Jackson Lee, a Democrat from Los Angeles who also spoke at Jackson’s memorial.

But House speaker Nancy Pelosi condemned the idea, saying it would disrespect Jackson by raising the controversies that haunted his later life.

“Michael Jackson was a great, great performer,” Pelosi told reporters at her weekly press conference, explaining that a resolution would be a distraction and “would open up two contrary views” on Jackson’s life.

Pelosi was speaking just days after Representative Peter King, a Republican from Long Island, blasted the media coverage of Jackson and called the performer a “pervert” and a “paedophile”.

Palin’s shocking decision could end her president dreams

New York, July 4 (ANI): Sarah Palin’s shocking announcement of stepping down as Alaska Governor has doomed her chances of ever becoming a President, Republican insiders have claimed.

“She has an incredibly thin résumé, a serious lack of gravitas, no coherent philosophy and the people around her are amateurs. She’s finished,” the Daily News quoted a top Republican, as saying.

“She couldn’t win – but now she can’t even run,” said a Republican mandarin, who once was among her most fervent boosters.

Experts were unanimously stunned to hear her walk off the job with 16 months left in her term – shrinking her résumé even more and surrendering the best platform she has beyond her double-edged celebrity status.

“If you aspire to the highest office in the land, then suddenly think your lieutenant governor can do a better job – not exactly a profile in courage,” a party pro said.

Few GOP insiders, who believe that the Alaska statehouse is too isolated a locale for any politician aspiring to high national office, were surprised Palin decided against running for reelection.

“You need to be in the Lower 48 to be credible politically,” a senior adviser to several Republican Presidents said.

But quitting mid-term with a rambling rant is not the way to get there.

“She proved she couldn’t play in the big leagues last fall and now she’s proven it again. If you can’t even handle a governorship, there’s no way you can handle the White House,” one of the party’s most prominent kingmakers said. (ANI)

Meghan McCain wants Hillary Duff to play her in a movie

New York, July 1 (ANI): Senator John McCain’s daughter Meghan wants Hillary Duff to play her in a movie version of her first book – still to be released.

The blonde blogger, who began to receive media attention in 2007 for her blog, McCain Blogette, has already drawn her top choices for the role.

“I want Hilary Duff to play me. I think she’s really hot – hotter than me – but I’d still want her to play me,” the New York Daily News quoted her as saying at the recent Trevor Project’s summer gala at Capitale.

But the 24-year-old added: “Really, I’d take anyone who’s blond.”

Meghan, who became a contributing author with The Daily Beast earlier this year, said that her book, slated for next spring from Hyperion, will be about “what it means to be a progressive Republican in the party today.”

She said: “It’s half political, and it’s half a memoir. It’s like ‘Primary Colors’ meets Tori Spelling’s ‘sTori Telling.’ I want young women to actually be able to read it.” (ANI)

Palin says she could beat Obama in long distance running

New York, July 1 (ANI): Alaska Governor Sarah Palin may have lost the race to become the next US vice-president, but she has told Runner’s World, a sports magazine that she could beat President Barack Obama in long-distance running.

“If [it] were a long race that required a lot of endurance I’d win. I betcha I’d have more endurance,” the New York Daily News quoted Palin, as saying.

“If you ever talk to my old coaches they’d tell you, too. What I lacked in physical strength or skill I made up for in determination and endurance,” she added.

Palin did admit she wouldn’t do well against Obama at basketball, the President’s chosen sport.

“He towers over me and I wouldn’t be complaining about an unfair advantage there,” she said.

“But maybe I’d do better playing H-O-R-S-E with him than one-on-one,” she said.

The one-time vice presidential candidate also spoke on how much running is a part of her life, and has impacted her view on politics:

“You have to have determination and set goals, and you don’t complain when something’s hurting because no one wants to hear it,” the 45-year-old Republican said.

Palin said that her runs usually consists of some of the same music, including Van Halen and AC/DC. Although she does close it out with a little country, such as Amy Grant. (ANI)

France considering proposal to ban burqa

London, June 20 (ANI): French President Nicolas Sarkozy’s Government is considering a proposal of parliamentarians to ban the burqa and other Islamic clothing.

French MPs called for an inquiry into the wearing of the head-to-toe Islamic veil in the country, and whether Muslim women who cover themselves completely in public constitute an assault on French secularism and women’s right.

Luc Chatel, a government spokesman, said that all the options were open, including a ban, The Telegraph reports. “If it were determined that wearing the burka is a submissive act, and that it is contrary to republican principles, well naturally parliament would have to drawn the necessary conclusions,” he said.

If that meant introducing new legislation, Luc Chatel said, “why not”.

French MPs call for a parliamentary commission to consider the fate of the burqa got support from senior figures in Sarkozy’s Government.

While France’s Muslim Council said the proposal “stigmatized” Islam, a commission is now expected to be established on the urging of the group of 65 politicians led by André Gerin, a Communist MP. Many of the 65 MPs are members of Sarkozy’s Right-wing UMP party.

Gerin is also mayor of the southern city of Venissieux, which has a high immigrant population and where he complains women cover themselves in “mobile prisons”.

The proposal won the support of Fadela Amara, the Urban Affairs Minister and a women’s rights campaigner whose parents were Muslims, The Telegraph reports.

“We must do everything to stop burqas from spreading, in the name of democracy, of the republic, of respect for women,” she said, describing the garment as “a kind of tomb for women.”

In 2004, France passed a controversial law forbidding any conspicuous religion symbols from state schools, including veils, which are banned in government offices. (ANI)

US President Obama – Obama kills a fly – Obama swats fly – Obama fly – Obama and the fly – Obama fly swat

US President Obama – Obama kills a fly – Obama swats fly – Obama fly – Obama and the fly – Obama fly swat

US President Obama, got irritated by a fly buzzing , disturbing and interrupting his TV interview at the Executive Mansion took some executive action, but not without warning. The president first spoke to the fly in question, uttering a stern, “Get out of here,” but the pesky insect, obviously a republican, refused to give away.

As soon as the fly landed, Obama killed him with his bare hands and then continued his interview with CNBC correspondent John Harwood. The president seemed proud of the victory:

“That was pretty impressive, wasn’t it?” he said. “I got the sucker.”

Obama to name Republican Huntsman as US envoy to China

Washington, May 16 (ANI): President Barack Obama plans to name Republican Utah Governor Jon M. Huntsman Jr. as ambassador to China, a senior administration official said.

Huntsman, who speaks fluent Mandarin Chinese, is often mentioned as a potential Republican presidential candidate in 2012, although some of his advisers think the party primary voters will be more prepared to accept his moderate views on the environment and gay rights in 2016.

Huntsman was in Washington on Friday night, ahead of a planned Saturday announcement by the White House, The Salt Lake Tribune reported. Several Utah news organizations said the governor would resign and accept the appointment.

Huntsman, 49, served a Mormon mission in Taiwan. The governor and his wife, Mary Kaye, adopted a daughter, Gracie Mei, from China in 1999. In 2006, he led a trade mission to China “because of their prominence on the world stage and the way in which they are growing so rapidly,” he told the Deseret Morning News of Salt Lake City.

The move has political ripple effects for both parties, giving Democrats one less potential challenger to worry about, and elevating the prospects for Romney and Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty. (ANI)

Clinton adviser says Democrats will dominate for 40 years

Washington, May 14 (ANI): The man who masterminded Bill Clinton’s first election victory in 1992, James Carville, has predicted that the Democratic Party will dominate American politics for the next four decades due to “seismic shifts” in demographic voting patterns.

Polls show that a record low of 24 per cent of Americans identify themselves as Republicans, while twice as many voters trust the Democrats to solve the country’s problems.

Carville said the party’s emphatic win last year demonstrated long lasting, built-in electoral advantages over the Republicans, who had made a huge mistake by retreating to their conservative base under George W Bush.

In a new book, “40 More Years – How the Democrats Will Rule the Next Generation”, he writes in typically barnstorming fashion: “Republicans shouldn’t be worried. They should be in agony. They should be throwing up. The Republican brand is the worst political party brand in history.”

“There have been long periods where one party generally has the upper hand. You never win every election – the Democrats won’t win every election – but for 40 years the underlying dynamics in demographics stay with them,” he told the Daily Telegraph.

From 1896 to 1932 there was just one Democratic president and from 1932 to 1968 just one moderate Republican, Eisenhower. Since 1968 the Republicans have generally held sway, exploiting the backlash to the liberal society.

But in the first decades of the 21st century, young voters have swung heavily to the Democrats, a crucial advantage given that voting behaviour in the US is generally set when people are in their 20s.

As an unashamedly partisan Democrat, Carville rejoices in Republican misfortune, but also claims that none of his high-powered Republican friends – Congressmen, pollsters and columnists – disagree with his hypothesis. (ANI)
