‘CBI fabricated our statements’

Mumbai, June 6 — The trial in the murder of the president of the Jalgaon District Congress Committee, Vishram Patil, has taken a new turn. Some of the witnesses, including a prosecution (panch) witness, have filed affidavits alleging that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) fabricated their statements attached to the CBI’s additional chargesheet filed on June 10, 2006.

Vishram was murdered on September 21, 2005. Political rivalry between him and party colleague, G.N. Patil, President Pratibha Patil’s brother, and another party member, Ulhas Patil, was suspected to be the reason for the murder.

Vishram’s widow, Rajni Patil, had moved the high court and the Supreme Court to make G.N. Patil an accused in the murder. An affidavit filed by Rekha Mali (wife of accused Raju Mali, who died in custody in 2007) alleged that the CBI and police fabricated her statement.

“CBI officers visit me and threaten me and my relatives. They ask me to give my statement according to what they say.

If anything happens to me, the CBI should be held responsible,” Rekha’s affidavit said. A senior CBI official confirmed these affidavits were filed.

“We will follow the process of law and file a reply if the court asks us to,” the officer said. The affidavit of Kishor Shah, one of the witnesses, said the police had approached him to be a panch witness.

“The police threatened me saying if I didn’t help them they would make me an accused in the case,” Shah’s affidavit said. Raju’s brother, Sanju, said the CBI had attached his statement with the chargesheet without recording it.

Rekha’s affidavit also said her husband had connections with politicians but nobody helped her. She claimed she had gone to meet G.N. Patil who asked her to return after 90 days.

‘Shell shocked’ Ajmal vows revenge from Hussey for ICC WC semifinal humiliation

Karachi, May 20 (ANI): Pakistan off spinner Saeed Ajmal has still not been able to get over the smashing that middle order Australian batsman Michael Hussey gave him during the final over of the second semi-final of the ICC World T20 Championship in Caribbean, as he has vowed to give Hussey a fitting reply the next time both teams meet.

Ajmal said he would never forget the last over in which Hussey clobbered him all around the Beausejour Stadium, St Lucia hitting 18 runs therby winning the game and ensuring a berth in the final of the tournament.

“I don’t know what happened because I was confident I would not let them score 18 runs in the final over but it was just my bad day and Hussey’s day. He played the innings of his life. But I’m confident that I’ll take his wicket the next time we play against Australia,” The News quoted Ajmal, as saying.

Meanwhile, veteran all rounder Abdul Razzaq said that being over-confident after posting a huge total of 191 runs, was one of the prime reasons behind Pakistan’s loss against Australia.

“We relaxed a bit too early against Australia. But overall our performance was good because the players backed each other and there was unity in the team.” Razzaq said. (ANI)

Delhi Municipal Corporation asked to explain rationale behind raising mobile tower installation fee

New Delhi, May 19 (ANI): The Delhi High Court on Wednesday sought an explanation from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) for raising charges for allowing mobile operators to install towers.

The MCD had raised the charges from Rs one lakh to Rs five lakh.

The High Court in its order restrained the MCD and asked it to file a reply within two days.

On May 13, the High Court had restrained the MCD from sealing illegal mobile phone towers in the national capital after the mobile operators challenged the decision to hike the charges.

The mobile operators had contended that the MCD’s decision was arbitrary and without any sound basis.

The MCD had started sealing of illegal mobile phone towers after the deadline for operators to apply for regularization by paying the hiked amount had expired.

The MCD had said out of 5,364 towers in the city, only 2,412 have requisite permission and the remaining 2,952 were illegal.

Earlier, the MCD had sealed over 300 illegal towers and given several deadlines to the tower operators to apply for regularization in keeping with new guidelines.

On February 9, the MCD had brought in a new policy on mobile towers. (ANI)

Dame Kiri Te Kanawa not impressed by Susan Boyle

London, May 18 (ANI): Susan Boyle, the ‘Britain”s Got Talent’ sensation, may have earned millions of fans, but Dame Kiri Te Kanawa is definitely not one of them.

Dame Kiri said she was ””not interested”” in discussing the YouTube sensation after Boyle performed it on Britain”s Got Talent last year.

According to The Telegraph, when asked about Boyle”s success with the tune from Les Miserables, which she too has performed, she told the Radio Times, ””Let”s get off that subject. Move on.

””I”m doing something classical, not whiz-bang. Whiz-bang disappears. It goes ”whiz” and then ”bang”.””

””You insult me by even wanting to bring it into this conversation. I”m not interested.

””This competition is named after me and has far more stability.

””It”s judged seriously by people with integrity who know what they”re talking about.””

About Andrea Bocelli performing opera, she said ””He did. Once. He wants to be an opera singer, but he isn”t.””

””We should talk about serious classical singers if you want to stick to the subject,” was the reply on mentioning Katherine Jenkins”s name.

””There”s Angela Gheorghiu, Renee Fleming, Anna Netrebko performing glorious, serious, grand opera without microphones. There aren”t many of us.”” (ANI)

NZ eves set up clash with Oz in T20 WC final

Sara McGlashan starred with a 55-ball 84 as New Zealand beat hosts West Indies by 56 runs to set up a summit clash against traditional rivals Australia in the Women’s World Twenty20 here.

Riding on McGlashan’s blazing knock, New Zealand, who finished runners-up at the last edition of the event, made 180 for five in their 20 overs.

In reply, the hosts could only manage 124 for eight in stipulated 20 overs last night. McGlashan was declared player of the match.

The win sets up New Zealand against Australia in the final scheduled tomorrow in Barbados.

The Kiwi women were off to a rather wobbly start as they lost opener Suzie Bates (7) with just 18 runs on the board.

The other opener, skipper Aimmee Watkins (20) didn’t last long either, leaving New Zealand at a precarious 49 for two in eight overs.

In walked McGlashan and she quickly started rebuilding the innings. Together with Sophie Devine (27), McGlashan put on 93 runs for the third wicket, which pout New Zealand in a strong position.

McGlashan struck six fours and a couple of sixes in her fantastic innings before being run out by Shakera Selman. Devine’s 22-ball knock included a four and a six.

For West Indies, Selman was the most successful bowler picking up two wickets, conceding 27 runs in her four overs.

In reply, opener Stafanie Taylor was the lone West Indian batter to put up some resistance with a 33-ball 40 that included three fours and a couple of sixes.

Watkins was New Zealand’s star with the ball as she grabbed three wickets giving away just 26 runs in her four overs.

After playing a stellar role with the bat, McGlashan made an impression in the field as well when she ran out Taylor.

The West Indies kept losing wickets at regular intervals and never got a partnership going, which was crucial to the chase.

Unpaid dues: ICL officials face legal action

Chandigarh, May 15 (IANS) A court here Saturday issued notice to three officials of the rebel Indian Cricket League (ICL) for not paying the Rs.700,000 dues of a local hotel.

Chandigarh Industrial and Tourism Development Corporation (CITCO), a semi-government corporation here, had filed a complaint in the court alleging that the ICL authorities had not paid the dues of hotel Mountview where the teams had stayed in 2008.

Mountview is a five-star hotel run by CITCO.

‘Out of the bill of Rs. 11 lakh, ICL officials have not paid nearly Rs.700,000. We had intimated them through mails, calls and even sent them various reminders. But they have not paid the money till date,’ a CITCO official said Saturday.

‘They asked us provide them detailed bills that we had submitted to them before January 2010. After seeing no developments, we had to approach the court.’

Chief Judicial Magistrate J.S. Sidhu Saturday issued notice to chief of accounts department, manager accounts and assistant vice president of Essel group that started the ICL.

The court has sought their reply July 26.

The first edition of the ICL, which was not recognized by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was held in November-December 2007.

My team preparing to add more to my reply: Modi

New Delhi, May 15 (IANS) After handing over his reply to the Indian cricket board’s chargesheet, suspended Indian Premier League (IPL) commissioner Lalit Modi said Saturday his team is readying to add more to the already voluminous response.

Modi said that he will soon hold a press conference on the issue.

‘I will do a press conference at an appropriate time. Its best to allow my colleagues time to go thru my reply. We spent weeks putting it,’ Modi tweeted hours after his lawyer Mehmood M. Abdi submitted six cartons of documents to BCCI Chief Administrative Officer Ratnakar Shetty at the Board headquarters in Mumbai.

‘When anyone is falsely accused – it is their duty to respond and not react. So one responds by making all that. The reply is by my last count around 15000 pages. The Team may have added more. Or getting ready to add more as we print thousands of mails.’

‘Now that the reply is done. 2nd reply still to be worked on. I plan to reply to that shortly. Just got into Monaco to enjoy the F1 tomorrow. Will spend it with friends and family,’ Modi said.

Abdi submitted a voluminous reply to the chargesheet slapped on Modi by BCCI over alleged irregularities in the functioning of the cash-rich IPL.

Modi’s lawyer to submit show-cause reply

Mumbai, May 15 (IANS) Lalit Modi, suspended chairman and commissioner of the Indian Premier League (IPL), will not personally submit his reply to the chargesheet slapped on him by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

In an e-mail to BCCI secretary N. Srinivasan, Modi said his lawyer Mehmood M. Abdi would deliver the reply to the show-cause notice with relevant documents at the BCCI headquarters at Wankhede Stadium here Saturday between 2.30 and 3.30 p.m.

Modi requested Srinivasan to depute some authorised person to ‘receive and acknowledge the documents by providing adequate receipt.’

Modi was earlier considering handing over the reply personally if the Board chief or the secretary were there to receive it.

The chargesheet, giving him 15 days to reply, was served on Modi April 26 after he was suspended at midnight soon after the IPL final. The BCCI later agreed to give Modi time to reply till Saturday.

The showcause lists charges of financial irregularity, but Modi has maintained that all decisions were taken collectively by the IPL Governing Council.

The five main charges against Modi include receiving kickbacks for allotting TV broadcast rights and manipulating bids.

New Zealand crush West Indies by 56 runs to enter ICC Women’s T20 WC final

Gros Islet, May 15 (ANI): Riding on Sara McGlashan’s superb 55 ball 84 run innings, New Zealand crushed West Indies by 56 runs to enter the final of the ICC Women’s World T20 Championship here.

The White Ferns’ would now clash with archrivals Australia, the side they”ve beaten six times in a row, in the final on Sunday (May 16) at the Kensington Oval, Barbados.

Batting first, New Zealand scored 180 for the loss of five wickets. The mainstay of the New Zealand innings was McGlashan’s exciting knock, which included six boundaries and two mammoth sixes.

McGlashan had two good partnerships with skipper Aimee Watkins (20) and Sophie Devine (27), which helped her steady the ship after a wobbly start.

New Zealand were 49 for two but a stand of 93 at nearly 11 an over between McGlashan and Devine took the game away from the home side.

In reply, West Indies never looked like they would overcome the highest total of the tournament and could only manage 124 runs.

Barring opener S.Taylor (40) none of the batswomen were able to stay on the wicket and followed each other to the pavilion at regular intervals.

Watkins also shone with the ball taking three wickets for 26 in her quota of four overs.

Speaking during the post match ceremony, an elated Watkins said she was delighted to have another chance at World Twenty20 glory so soon after last year”s disappointment.

“We”ve got to take each game as it comes. What we”ve done in the past doesn”t matter too much but we will take a lot of confidence into the game. We are lucky we”ve got two bites of the cherry, to have another crack at the Twenty20 World Cup. It”s not often you”ll have another one within 12 months of the last one,” Watkins said. (ANI)

Australia humble Windies as hosts bow out

Gros Islet (West Indies), May 12 (ANI): Australia knocked hosts the West Indies out of the World Twenty20 and kept alive the possibility of an Anglo-Australian final with a dominating six-wicket win here on Tuesday.

West Indies, in a match they had to win by 24 runs to reach the semi-finals, was bowled out for just 105 at the Beausejour Stadium. Australia, in reply, lost two wickets on 31.

But Brad Haddin (42) saw Australia to the verge of victory before he got out with two runs needed to West Indies captain Chris Gayle.

The occasional off-spinner then ended the match with a ball that went for five wides, a delivery that summed up his team”s performance on the day.

Australia, who finished on 109 for four, won with 22 balls to spare. Their win ensured Sri Lanka, last year”s losing finalists, also went through to the semi-finals as Group F runners-up.

England will play Sri Lanka, who earlier Tuesday knocked out India with a five-wicket win, in the first semi-final here on Thursday. The second semi-final will see Australia playing defending champions Pakistan, also at Beausejour, on Friday. The final takes place at Barbados”s Kensington Oval on Sunday. (ANI)

Cameron White’s blast ruins Lanka’s World Twenty20 campaign

Barbados (West Indies), May 10 (ANI): Australian leg-spinning all-rounder Cameron White has spoiled Sri Lanka’s party at the World Twenty20 championship, scoring 89 of 49 balls.

As a result Sri Lanka lost a crucial Super Eight match by a massive 81 runs.

Australia has taken a step closer to clinching their first World Twenty20 title.

In reply to Australia’s total of 169, Sri Lanka scored 87 in 16.2 overs.

Despite winning two of their three Super Eight matches – after beating India here on Saturday – Australia must still beat West Indies in St Lucia to assure themselves a place in the semi-finals. India would have to beat Sri Lanka and also keep an eye on the net run rate in the hope of making it to the semi-finals. (ANI)

Zimbabwe stun defending champions Pak in T20 WC warm-up match

Lahore, Apr.30 (ANI): After stunning Australia in their first warm-up match by registering a sensational one run win, ‘minnows’ Zimbabwe trounced defending champions Pakistan by 12-runs in the second practice match ahead of the ICC T20 World Championship.

Zimbabwe were struggling for 64 for 5 in the 12th over, but Elton Chigumbura’s exciting knock of 49 not out from just 35 balls saw the Africans post a respectable total of 143 for 7 in their allotted 20 overs.

In reply, Pakistan started on a positive note with wicket keeper Kamran Akmal hitting a blistering 37 from 27 balls, but wickets kept falling from the opposite end, which reduced the defending T20 World Champions for 67 for 5 after 10 overs.

Pakistan’s hopes were revived by some sensible batting by middle order batsmen Fawad Alam and Misbah-ul-Haq, who added 51 in 7.4 over for the sixth wicket, but pacer Prosper Utseya removed both the set batsmen in space of three deliveries.

Utseya returned with a match winning figures of 4 for 15 in his quota of four overs, The Daily Times reports.

Chigumbura shone with the ball as well taking 3 for 16 in three overs to help his team register its second consecutive win in the warm-up matches. (ANI)

Vettori blames poor first innings for Hamilton Test defeat

Hamilton, Mar 31(ANI): New Zealand skipper Daniel Vettori has said that a poor batting display in the first innings was a crucial factor in his side’s 176-run defeat against Australia in the second Test in Hamilton on Wednesday.

“It’s similar to the first test, we played really well at times, but to beat Australia it has to be over five days and there were pockets where we let ourselves down,” Stuff.co.nz quoted Vettori, as saying.

“Not supporting Ross Taylor in the first innings with the bat was probably the crucial bit because we bowled so well in the first innings to give ourselves a chance, but we needed to have a sizeable lead to put pressure back on Australia,” he added.

Taylor had scored the fastest century in New Zealand history with a brilliant 138, but it had failed to provide any momentum to the home side, as they only managed a 33-run first-innings lead after being bowled out for 264 in reply to Australia’s first innings of 231.

Meanwhile, Australian skipper Ricky Ponting paid tribute to left-arm fast bowler Mitchell Johnson, who took 12 wickets at 18.33 in the one-day series and 12 wickets at 23.08 in the two tests.

“He has come a long way, this tour in particular has been the best and most consistent I”ve seen him bowl. There were probably some question marks over our test cricket before the summer started, having been a bit inconsistent during the Ashes series and not nailing the crucial moments,” Ponting said.

“If anything we’ve gone the other way when there”s been big moments we really have stood up and nailed them. When we”ve had opposition teams down we”ve stayed on top,” he added. (ANI)

Malaysian state civil service has only 10 Chinese and 116 Indians

Johor Baru (Malaysia), Mar.30 (ANI): The 8,372-strong civil service of the Malaysian state of Johor Baru has only 10 Chinese and 116 Indians, The Star has quoted an assemblyman, as saying.

Bentayan assemblyman Gwee Tong Hian said in terms of percentage, Indians and Chinese made up 1.39 percent and 0.12 percent of the state civil service respectively.

Gwee said the statistics were given to him in a written reply from Minister Abdul Ghani Othman.

Abdul Ghani revealed that in 2007, only five Indians applied for jobs in the civil service, with only two being short-listed and appointed.

There were no Chinese applicants that year.

In 2008, there were seven Indian applicants. Only four were appointed. As for Chinese applicants, only five applied, two were short-listed and appointed.

Abdul Ghani said the Johor Public Services Commission had received many applications that were now in the vetting and interview stages.

He said the commission had also taken initiatives to encourage non-Malays to join the civil service with programmes initiated by the state’s Economic Planning Unit and Jobstreet.com. (ANI)

MP to meet Paragon director

A Victorian MP says he has been in contact with the director of Paragon Printing in Wodonga.

The company appointed administrators about two weeks ago and the factory’s 145 workers have been stood down until Thursday.

The Member from Benambra, Bill Tilley, says he contacted Amir Hyster via email and confirmed he is overseas.

He says Mr Hyster is willing to meet him when he returns to Australia.

“I have received a reply from Mr Hyster who has informed me and confirmed that he is currently out of the country and that he’s happy to catch up with me upon his return,” he said.

“I haven’t had any further conversation or any further emails since the return of that … on the 15th of March.”

Black Caps frustrate Aussies

Australia is set to bat again in the first Test against New Zealand in Wellington following a morning session of stubborn resistance on day four at Basin Reserve.

The Black Caps, who were forced to follow on, reached the lunch interval on 5 for 266 in their second innings, trailing Australia by 36 runs.

Black Caps captain Daniel Vettori was unbeaten on 60 and Brendon McCullum was not out on 39.

The hosts had started day four on 5 for 187 and needing 115 runs to make Australia bat again, and after a delayed start because of rain and wind, they set about frustrating the tourists’ bowling attack.

Vettori and McCullum scored at a steady run rate to compile a 83-run stand for the sixth wicket with the Black Caps skipper reaching his 22nd half-century during the session.

It was an admirable performance from the pair, considering the meek display produced by the Black Caps in their first innings when they were dismissed for a disappointing 157 in reply to Australia’s 5 for 459 (declared).

Tampering of law student’s marks rocks Kerala assembly

Thiruvananthapuram, March 16 (IANS) The Kerala assembly Tuesday witnessed uproarious scenes and a walkout by the opposition over the alleged tampering of marks of law students, details of which are said to have been leaked by a Kerala University official who is the wife of the deputy leader of opposition.

Sulekha, the university’s controller of exams, is said to have discovered that marks of an LL.B final year student were raised from 34 to 44 in the Public International Law and Human Rights paper. Sulekha is the wife of deputy leader of Congress in the assembly G.Karthikeyan.

Congress legislator P.C.Vishnunadh moved an adjournment motion on the issue immediately after question hour but Speaker K. Radhakrishnan ruled that since Education Minister M.A.Baby was out of station, attending a function in which Kerala Governor R.S.Gavai was taking part, the motion could not be taken up.

This irked the opposition and Leader of Opposition Oommen Chandy said as per the convention of the house, if a minister was absent some other minister could give a reply as the government had a collective responsibility.

This was opposed by Minister for Parliamentary Affairs M. Vijayakumar, who said the question of collective responsibility did not arise on this issue.

‘The education minister has taken leave of absence from the speaker. Moreover, to reply to an issue in less than an hour for a minister not handling the department is not an easy task,’ said Vijayakumar.

But Chandy remained adamant and said what Vijayakumar pointed out did not go with the tradition of the house.

‘We also have been in government and we also have been absent from the assembly at times, but we handed over the responsibility to other ministers. Any minister can get the required information in an hour’s time to give a reply on an issue. What happened today is a black day in the history of the assembly,’ Chandy said, leading the opposition out of the house.

Later speaking to IANS, Vishnunadh said early this month a senior official of the Kerala University on perusal of certain records found that the marks list of students had been tampered with.

‘In the answer for Public International Law and Human Rights paper of final year LL.B course, a student had got 34 marks and this was marked on the counterfoil of the answer sheet. But in the tabulation sheet, he was found to have got 44 marks. On seeing this, the controller of examination called for the answer sheet and found that the student’s actual marks were 34. It was also found that an error of this nature was spotted in the case of another student as well,’ said Vishnunadh.

Earlier, during a meeting of the Kerala University Syndicate, members belonging to the Student Federation of India – the student wing of the ruling CPI-M – accused Sulekha of leaking details of the incident.

‘Our student activists who staged a protest march to the office of the university, yesterday (Monday) are now in jail. We demand a thorough investigation into the scam by an external agency because the credibility of the university is at stake,’ added Vishnunadh.
