Murray rejects Lloyd”s criticism for UK-Lithuania Davis Cup miss

London, Mar. 26 (ANI): Britain’s best tennis player Andy Murray has hit back at former Davis Cup captain John Lloyd for criticising him for missing the clash in Lithuania earlier this month.

The British No1 chose to sit out the tie following Britain”s relegation to Europe/Africa Zone Group II.

Lloyd questioned Murray”s commitment to Great Britain, but Murray said he had made the right decision.

“I can understand to a certain extent that everyone would like me to play in the Davis Cup because obviously we”ve got a better chance of winning. But the last tie I played in Davis Cup, I was injured. I played through the match when I was injured and it set me back probably double the amount of time that it would have done if I hadn”t played,” The Sun quoted Murray, as saying.

“No one talks about that side when you”re playing through matches when you”re hurt and it sets you back and then you drop ranking points,” Murray added.

“I don”t see John coming out and having a go at Roger Federer or Rafa Nadal or Andy Roddick or whoever, the guys that don”t play Davis Cup all of the time either. I think there needs to be a bit of perspective there that it”s not just me missing the Davis Cup tie,” Murray said. (ANI)

Tasmanian result a waiting game

Tasmania’s Labor leader says the election was not the bloodbath the party feared but there were several casualties, mostly in the state’s south.

It could be several days before it is known who has won the undecided fifth seat in the southern electorate of Denison.

Labor leader David Bartlett polled the most primary votes, ahead of the Greens’ Cassy O’Connor.

The last seat is a three-way battle between the Greens’ Helen Burnett, Liberal Richard Lowrie, and the independent Andrew Wilkie.

Mr Wilkie says he has polled strongly and preferences will flow to him.

“There’s been no shortage of people telling me it would be impossible to be elected as an independent with a 25-seat Parliament,” he said.

“I never believed that and I think I’m still in the race.”

Labor was hurt in the seat, although Scott Bacon, the son of former Labor premier Jim Bacon, will enter parliament.

Two ministers – Lisa Singh and Graeme Sturges – have lost their seats.

The Greens’ Cassy O’Connor says Labor’s campaign tactics backfired.

“What I actually think it did was shift some of the ‘true believers’ away, the loyal Labor voters away from Labor who were frankly repulsed,” she said.

Newly-elected Liberal Matthew Groom spent Sunday celebrating his win with friends and family including his father, former premier Ray Groom.

“Obviously in the Hare-Clark system name recognition is relevant,” he said.

“I focussed very heavily in this campaign on running in my own right.”

Braddon struggle

The key to governing could rest in Braddon, where a Liberal heavyweight is in a desperate struggle with the Greens.

Brett Whiteley’s career is on a knife-edge, after a new Liberal face stole much of his vote.

Labor has lost a seat in the north-west electorate but Bryan Green topped the poll to mark his comeback from scandal.

Criminal charges and relegation to the backbench were not enough to stop him topping the Braddon vote, for the third time running.

He is talking down a return to the deputy leadership but says the critics have been vanquished.

“[I'd] certainly be hoping for a front-bench position,” he said.

Brenton best maintained his vote, despite the 10 per cent swing but Labor’s third seat, held by the retiring Steve Kons, quickly disappeared.

The Liberals’ Jeremy Rockliff was the big winner, polling his best result in three elections.

He could be deputy premier next week.

“[It's] very rewarding, of course but a little flat at the fact that I could lose my friend and colleague, Brett Whiteley,” Mr Rockliff said.

Businessman Adam Brooks has stormed into Parliament with a big-spending campaign believed to be five times the cost of Mr Whiteley’s.

“The nature of Hare-Clark is to get your name out there and certainly I’ve chosen a different approach to some of my running mates,” he said.

Mr Whiteley is neck-and-neck with the Greens for the final seat.

After eight years in Parliament, the bullish Christian minister faces an agonising wait.

“I’m questioning the ‘big fella’ at the moment as to how that all works itself out, but whatever is meant to be, will be.”

The Greens’ Paul O’Halloran has achieved his best vote as he goes for “third-time lucky”.

“I do know that the smear campaign that was conducted against us, hurt us here,” he said.

If Mr O’Halloran beats Mr Whiteley, he will be the first Green in Braddon since 1998 when electorates were cut to five members.

Bass battle

Union representative Scott McLean believes former Beaconsfield miner Brant Webb may have hurt his chances for Labor in Bass.

Sitting member Michelle O’Byrne scored the highest number of votes for Labor, with Liberal candidates Michael Ferguson and Peter Gutwein and the Green’s Kim Booth also picking up seats.

Mr Ferguson, a former Liberal MP, topped the poll with nearly 15,000 votes.

“I’d be very pleased to work with Will Hodgman in any capacity that I can,” he said.

Peter Gutwein says there is disappointment in the electorate result.

“Unfortunately we just haven’t done enough to get that third seat,” he said.

Ms O’Byrne received more than 10,000 votes.

“It’s always gratifying to do well personally,” Ms O’Byrne said.

While the pulp mill was not a focus of the campaign, the Greens believe it is what helped Kim Booth across the line without the need for preferences.

“Bass has said no to Gunns’ pulp mill,” he said.

Brian Wightman is fighting for the last Bass seat for Labor.

He is up against Mr McLean and Mr Webb.

“A lot of people would have voted for Brant, I’m sure,” Mr McLean said.

“Brant’s a very good fellow and he certainly was an exemplary candidate I thought.

“We’ll just see what the outcome will be.”

New Franklin face

Labor’s David O’Byrne says he is looking forward to representing workers in Tasmania’s new Parliament.

The former union official and father of two was elected in Franklin.

He says he is humbled by the support he has received from union members.

“The friendships that I’ve built up there and the relationships that I’ve built up there, people wanted to help me get elected and be a workers’ voice in Parliament,” Mr O’Byrne said.

“That’s exactly what I want to be.”

His election was at the expense of another two Labor members, Daniel Hulme and Ross Butler.

Daniel Hulme says he is now is looking for work.

“I am interested in further involvement in public life and serving the community,” he said.

Labor’s Lara Giddings has retained her seat.

“Obviously there’s been a protest vote against Labor and a lot of people have parked their votes with the Greens,” she said.

Franklin had some of the biggest primary votes in the state.

Liberal leader Will Hodgman polled almost two quotas on his own, with Nick McKim getting 1.5 quotas.

Former Family first candidate Jacquie Petrusma looks likely to be the second Liberal member.

Lyons waits

The last seat in Lyons may still go to the Liberals, with Mark Shelton not far behind Labor candidates David Llewellyn and Rebecca White.

Veteran Labor MP Michael Polley has been re-elected to Parliament for the 12th time.

For the past 12 years he has sat in the speaker’s chair.

That position will now be determined by a secret ballot.

“We’ll wait and see what the Parliament wants to do,” Mr Polley said.

“I will serve the people of Lyons in the best possible way I can and I will serve the Parliament in the best way I can.”

Young gun Rebecca White is just 46 votes behind David Llewellyn and could secure the second seat or a third for Labor.

“I think that David will still win that seat. I think he’ll get the preference vote,” Mr Polley said.

Ms White says she is still overwhelmed by Saturday’s result.

“I’m absolutely delighted and humbled by the results so far,” she said.

Labor’s Heather Butler is now contemplating life after politics.

“There were a lot of surprises I guess,” she said

The Greens’ Tim Morris topped the poll with almost 8,000 votes.

“I think what we are seeing is the real level of support for the Greens starting to show through,” he said.

Rene Hidding is back for the Liberals.

But it is a nervous wait for Meander Valley Mayor Mark Shelton to see if he can claim a second seat in Lyons.

“It’s a bit of a nervous wait now until they count all the preferences and so on but I am really pleased with the votes.”

Sean “Diddy” Combs makes a bid for Crystal Palace

Melbourne, Mar 19 (ANI): Rapper Sean “Diddy” Combs is said to be making a bid for struggling London soccer team Crystal Palace.

According to the Sun, Combs, 40, is planning to splash some of his reported 360 million pounds on the Selhurst Park side.

The bankrupt club is in chaos, facing relegation from the Coca-Cola Championship after having ten points docked for going into administration.

His U.K. spokesman has confirmed the multi-millionaire is in the market for Palace and also added that the New Yorker has his eye on another big club.

“Diddy was in London meeting football fixers a couple of weeks ago. The finance is in place, he’s just deciding who he thinks he’ll make a bid for,” the Daily Telegraph quoted a source as saying.

“Portsmouth were mentioned but he thought Palace were a better idea.

“He could cover their debt and bankroll a return to the Premier League. He liked the name as well,” the source added. (ANI)

Pompey’s survival bid continues

Troubled English Premier League club Portsmouth received a boost in its attempt to avoid liquidation overnight as the British tax authority accepted the team’s move into administration.

Officials at HM Revenue and Customs had insisted Portsmouth’s owner Balram Chainrai did not have the legal right to put the club into administration, but they have now abandoned that claim.

Chainrai appointed Andrew Andronikou as the club’s administrator last month and he cut 85 jobs at the club on Wednesday (local time).

“The Revenue has accepted the administration is valid,” a spokesman for the club said.

FA Cup semi-finalist Portsmouth, currently bottom of the Premier League, now faces a nine-point deduction for entering into administration and the punishment is almost certain to lead to its relegation at the end of the season.

Pompey have debts totalling over 80 million pounds ($131.64 million) and became the first Premier League club to enter administration last month.

Massive savings are needed to keep the club afloat but players – the highest earners on the payroll – cannot be made redundant due to protection afforded to them by the Professional Footballers’ Association.

On Wednesday, 85 of the cash-strapped club’s employees were made redundant.

Andronikou has considered trying to persuade the Premier League to let him sell players outside the transfer window and then get them loaned back to Portsmouth, where they would become non-playing members of the squad.

But with an FA Cup semi-final against Fulham or Tottenham looming, Andronikou is adamant no players will leave Fratton Park before the Wembley showdown next month.

Crisis club Pompey sacks 85 staff

Portsmouth administrator Andrew Andronikou announced overnight that 85 of the cash-strapped English Premier League club’s employees have been made redundant.

But he added he was receiving “enquiries on a daily basis” regarding a takeover for the bottom-of-the-table Premier League side and that no players had been sacked.

Portsmouth is due to return to the High Court on March 15 to answer a winding-up order brought by British tax authorities.

If a judge decides Portsmouth cannot overcome debts said to be totalling 76 million pounds ($124.35 million) they could be liquidated and go out of business completely.

Meanwhile, Pompey are facing the prospect of a nine points deduction for entering administration that would make their relegation from English football’s top-flight all but certain.

But last weekend Portsmouth, the 2008 FA Cup winners, beat Birmingham City to reach this season’s Cup semi-finals.

Torino with seven players banned ahead of game for survival

Rome – Struggling Serie A side Torino had seven players suspended following the Sunday game they lost 3-2 at home to Genoa, the ANSA news agency reported Tuesday.

A sports judge banned Angelo Ogbonna and Marco Pisano for four games, Rolando Bianchi, Aimo Diana and Cesare Pratali for two for their role in a brawl that took place on the pitch after the game.

Blerim Dzemaili and Ignazio Abate received a one-game ban for having been booked twice.

Genoa’s Ruben Olivera also took part in the brawl and was banned for three games.

Torino risk relegation in the season’s last game at Roma on Sunday. The Turin side lie level with Bologna, who play at home with Catania and have a better record in the direct clashes with Torino.

Lecce and Reggina are already relegated. (dpa)

Mainz secure return to Bundesliga

Mainz secure return to Bundesliga Hamburg – Mainz 05 clinched promotion to Germany’s top-flight Bundesliga with a 4-0 victory over Rot-Weiss Oberhausen on Sunday.

Two goals apiece from Srdhan Baljak and Aristide Bance ensured Mainz finished second in the second division behind champions Freiburg who made sure of promotion two weeks ago.

Freiburg top the table on 68 points, with Mainz on 63 and Nuremberg third on 60.

Nuremberg go into a play-off for promotion with Energie Cottbus who finished third last in the Bundesliga on Saturday. The two-leg play-off will be on Thursday in Cottbus and Sunday in Nuremberg.

Mainz, with Norwegian former striker Joern Anderson in his first season in charge as coach at the club, are back in the top flight after a two-year absence.

Freiburg return four years after being relegated, while Nuremberg are aiming for a quick return after relegation in the 2007/08 season.

Karlsruhe and Arminia Bielefeld are relegated to the second division. (dpa)

Bordeaux edge closer to French title

Paris, May 24 (Xinhua) Girondins Bordeaux moved closer to the Ligue 1 title after securing a 1-0 win at home to Monaco Saturday with three points clear of Olympique Marseille and just one game left to play.

Bordeaux, who were last crowned champions 10 years ago, are on 77 points after extending their winning streak to 10 league games.

They will visit strugglers Caen next Saturday.

Marseille, second on 74 points, secured automatic entry to the Champions League with a 2-1 win at Nancy before they host Stade Rennes for their last game.

Olympique Lyon are now certain to end the season in third, and will go through to Champions League qualifying, after a 3-1 home victory against Caen took them to 70 points, seven clear of fourth-placed Toulouse, who won 2-0 at Nice.

Bordeaux struggled throughout the game but prevailed thanks to a first-half header from Morocco striker Marouane Chamakh from a Yoann Gourcuff free kick.

Marseille also feared a Nancy comeback when they conceded a goal from Landry N’Guemo two minutes from time.

Laurent Bonnart had put Marseille in front before the interval through a deflected shot, with Brandao getting the second from close range after Nancy goalkeeper Damien Gregorini had saved a Renato Civelli header from a corner.

Juninho scored his 100th goal for Lyon when he converted from the spot after being brought down in the area.

The Brazilian midfielder was then given a standing ovation from Lyon’s fans when he was substituted after the interval.

Ligue 1 top scorer Andre-Pierre Gignac scored two to take his tally to 24 goals as he helped Toulouse move up to fourth with a 2-0 win over Nice.

Second-bottom Nantes lost 2-1 to strugglers Sochaux and are on the brink of relegation to Ligue 2.

Shearer still awaiting first Newcastle win

London – Portsmouth denied Alan Shearer his first win as Newcastle United manager after a 0-0 draw at St James’s Park on Monday night. The point lifts Newcastle into 18th place, above neighbours Middlesbrough on goal difference on 31 points with just four matches remaining. Portsmouth remain four places higher on 38 points.

With Newcastle sitting in the relegation zone before the match, Shearer had staked his team’s hopes of survival on winning their three remaining home games, starting with the match against Portsmouth.

But the Newcastle fans and their manager are now facing a daunting task to remain in the Premier League after Portsmouth dented their hopes further as they still sit three points from safety.

Chances were few and far between for both sides throughout much of the match as Portsmouth looked to sit deep and hit Newcastle on the counter attack.

But with the home side becoming increasingly desperate to find the breakthrough as the match wore on, both sides will feel they could have found a winning goal.

The best chance for Newcastle fell to striker Michael Owen midway through the second half, but the England striker could only shoot weakly straight at Portsmouth goalkeeper David James.

And Richard Hughes’s headed effort against the post for Portsmouth proved to be the closest the game came to a goal with ten minutes remaining. (dpa)

Barcelona battle out valuable late draw in Valencia

Madrid – Barcelona were relieved to battle out a late 2-2 away to lively Valencia on Saturday, with an 86th minute equalizer from supersub Thierry Henry.

The hard-fought draw leaves Barca seven points ahead of second-placed Real Madrid, who are away to third-placed Sevilla on Sunday..

“We didn’t want to lose tonight,” said Henry, “and we showed a lot of courage. This is how leagues are won.”

The game in Mestalla looked like being yet another cakewalk for Barca, especially after Messi put them ahead in the 24th minute, after a clever one-two with Andres Iniesta.

But the Barca defence surprisingly collapsed just before half-time.

In the 43rd minute keeper Victor Valdes and Puyol messed up a seemingly harmless corner – and Maduro poked the ball home with his thigh. It was the first goal that Barca had conceded in eight games.

Just two minutes later Pablo made it 2-1 with a calm finish, after playing a perfect one-two with Juan Mata.

Predictably, Valencia were content to soak up the pressure and play on the break in the second half. Barca dominated possession but were uninspired and failed to create any clear chances to equalize.

Four minutes from time, however, Valencia keeper Cesar spilled a Messi free-kick, and Henry took advantage to make it 2-2 with a left-foot shot.

The draw ends Barca’s run of seven straight wins and Valencia’s run of five triumphs.

Barca now have 82 points from 33 games, Real have 75 from 32, Sevilla have 57 from 32 and Valencia, still in fourth place, now have 56 from 33.

Earlier on Saturday, Malaga were held to a 1-1 draw by Deportivo Coruna.

Former Spain striker Albert Luque gave Malaga the lead in the 33rd minute, only for fellow veteran Sergio to equalize for Deportivo just after half-time.

Malaga would have gone fifth had they won. Instead, they continue in sixth place with 51 points, one point above Deportivo but one behind fifth-placed Villarreal.

“We have missed another good chance tonight,” said Malaga defender Javier Calleja, “to get closer to the European places.”

Saturday’s other early game saw bottom team Numancia beaten 2-1 by Almeria, for whom Kalu Uche and Fernando Soriano were the scorers.

Numancia have just 28 points – two less than Recreativo Huelva and four less than Espanyol – and are surely heading towards their third relegation within eight years. (dpa)

Malaga denied fifth place by Deportivo

Madrid – The 33rd round of the Spanish Liga programme kicked off on Saturday with a 1-1 draw between Euro hopefuls Malaga and Deportivo Coruna. Former Spain striker Albert Luque gave Malaga the lead in the 33rd minute, only for fellow veteran Sergio to equalize for Deportivo just after half-time.

Malaga would have gone fifth had they won. Instead, they continue in sixth place with 51 points, one point above Deportivo but one behind fifth-placed Villarreal and four behind fourth-placed Valencia, who are at home to leaders Barcelona later on Saturday.

“We have missed another good chance tonight,” said Malaga defender Javier Calleja, “to get closer to the European places.”

Saturday’s other early game saw bottom team Numancia beaten 2-1 by Almeria, for whom Kalu Uche and Fernando Soriano were the scorers.

D’Agostino scores brace as Udinese edge lowly Chievo

Rome – Gaetano D’Agostino’s brace Saturday sealed Udinese’s 2-1 win over hosts Chievo, who remain eight points above the relegation zone before the four teams they lead play respective games on Sunday. D’Agostino converted a spot-kick on 34 minutes after Colombian Mario Yepes floored Fabio Quagliarella and scored the winner in injury time off a cross from Quagliarella.

The hosts from Verona had themselves to blame for two mistakes from midfielder Luca Rigoni, who lost control of the ball in the area on 33 minutes and repeated his blunder shortly before the break.

Chievo kicked off the second half at a fast pace and equalized on 71 minutes through Sergio Pellissier, who in early April scored a memorable hat-trick in a 3-3 draw at Juventus .

The striker headed centrally despite being unmarked on 69 minutes, but two minutes later had the better of the guests’ defence to nod past Samir Handanovic.

The Slovenian goalkeeper rescued Udinese on 77 minutes with a great dive to deflect a smashing shot from Michele Marcolini and was then saved by the bar on a defender’s deflection.

Defender Andrea Mantovani also found Handanovic ready to deflect, while, on the other side of the pitch, Lorenzo Squizzi had trouble blocking an effort from Ghana’s Kwadwo Asamoah.

In the dying seconds, Quagliarella stormed down the right and sent in a great cross for the winning volley from the unchallenged D’Agostino.

Plenty of action is expected later Saturday in Florence as Fiorentina welcome Roma in a crucial match in the search for the fourth available Champions League berth.

Leaders Inter Milan close the weekend late Sunday at Napoli with a 10-point advantage on Juventus and AC Milan. (dpa)

Liverpool win at Hull to keep title hopes alive; Hope for West Brom

London – Liverpool kept their title hopes alive with a 3-1 win at Hull City on Saturday as they moved back above Manchester United on goal difference at the top of the English Premier League. A first-half strike from Xabi Alonso set Liverpool on their way and two goals from Dirk Kuyt sealed the points, though champions United can go back three points clear at the top, with a game still in hand, if they beat Tottenham Hotspur later on Saturday.

Chelsea are three points behind the top two after they won 1-0 at West Ham United, while bottom side West Bromwich Albion gave themselves a glimmer of hope in their battle for survival by beating Sunderland 3-0 at the Hawthorns.

Alonso smashed a rebound from his own free kick late in the first half of their match at Hull and things then got worse for the home side when Caleb Folan was sent off after
58 minutes for kicking out at Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel.

Dirk Kuyt then doubled their lead with a header four minutes later but Geovanni pulled one back with 18 minutes to go thanks to a neat finish after good work from Daniel Cousin.

Fernando Torres headed against the crossbar from close range but Kuyt made sure of the points with his side’s third late on, leaving Hull still just three points ahead of the relegation zone, with four games to go.

Salomon Kalou’s second-half goal put Chelsea in front at Upton Park but the striker turned into the villain with 20 minutes to go when he conceded a penalty for pulling back Herita Ilunga.

However, Petr Cech came to his rescue with a fine save from Mark Noble’s spot-kick and Chelsea took the points.

West Brom remain bottom but now only two points behind Newcastle and six points away from safety after goals from Jonas Olsson, Chris Brunt and Juan Carlos Menseguez gave them a 3-0 win over Sunderland.

Robinho and Stephen Ireland scored the goals as Manchester City won 2-1 at Everton for only their second away win of the season, while Stoke are still not totally safe after their 1-0 loss at Fulham.

Fifth-placed Aston Villa were held to a 1-1 draw at Bolton Wanderers in the day’s other match. (dpa)

Australia to contest any decision to suspend it from next year’s Davis Cup

Melbourne, Apr 26 (ANI): Australia will challenge any decision to suspend it from next year’s Davis Cup after announcing that it would not send a tennis team to India for the May 8-10 tie against India in Chennai.

Tennis Australia cited security fears related to the country’s month-long general elections for which the final votes in Tamil Nadu state are cast on May 13.

Unless the International Tennis Federation rules otherwise, Australia may not play again until 2011. There is also the likelihood of a substantial fine and the possibility of relegation to a lower division, The Age reported.

Australia withdrew from the tie in India after hearing that its appeal for a change of venue or a delay of the tie until after Wimbledon had been rejected by the ITF.

Australia’s captain John Fitzgerald was irate and condemned the federation board, accusing it of “buffoonery” and describing the decision as irresponsible.

“So what about the fact that dozens of people are being killed along the campaign trail of the election? A train was hijacked this week, but that does not alter their thoughts. Did the IPL move (Twenty20 cricket from India to South Africa) for no reason?” Fitzgerald asked.

Tennis Australia president Geoff Pollard announced the decision before yesterday’s start to the Australian women’s tennis team’s Fed Cup tie against Switzerland in Mildura. (ANI)

Bent strike deepens Newcastle woes By Jonathan Wilson

London – Darren Bent got the only goal as Tottenham Hotspur beat Newcastle United 1-0 in the English Premier League on Sunday to heighten the relegation fears of Alan Shearer’s side.

Newcastle lie second from bottom, four points from safety with five games of the season remaining.

Tottenham, meanwhile, are only a point off seventh place and qualification for the Europa League.

Although Newcastle mounted a late rally, Tottenham’s victory was far more comfortable than the 1-0 margin may suggest.

Victories for Sunderland and Portsmouth on Saturday had increased the pressure on Newcastle, and they responded with a sluggish first half.

Tottenham, without really seeming to play at full pace, comfortably dominated possession, and it seemed only a matter of time before they took the lead.

Newcastle centre-back Sebastian Bassong might have been sent off when he seemed to bring down Bent in a goal-scoring position in the first minute, but if he was lucky then, he was unfortunate for Tottenham’s opener, when it did arrive after 24 minutes.

Spurs broke quickly, and as Luka Modric tried to slide in Robbie Keane, Bassong made the interception.

The ball, though, fell kindly for Bent. His initial attempt to cross was cut out by goalkeeper Steve Harper, but he tucked in the rebound.

Tom Huddlestone, who had already hit three sumptuous long passes, then had two long-range drives tipped over by Harper.

A lengthy break for an injury to Spurs centre-back Michael Dawson gave Newcastle the opportunity to switch from 3-5-2 to 4-3-3, but Tottenham’s control of possession continued unabated, and Bent missed a sitter from Alan Hutton’s cross on the stroke of half-time.

Steven Taylor was forced off at the break by an Achilles tendon injury. He was replaced by Alan Smith, with Habib Beye moving into the centre and Damien Duff dropping in at left back.

The bigger change to the flow of the game, though, came with the introduction of Mark Viduka and Obafemi Martins on the hour.

Newcastle suddenly offered a threat, although Lennon flashed an effort just wide, having accelerated away from Duff.

They found an unexpected late equaliser against Stoke City last week, and Martins almost repeated the feat, stealing in front of Jonathan Woodgate, only to blaze the bouncing ball over from close range.

This time, though, there was no reprieve. (dpa)

UK football bosses planning two Premier Leagues

London, Apr.19 (ANI): English football is set for a revolutionary change with the sport’s bosses seriously considering plans to start a second Premier League.

Bolton’s Phil Gartside, one of the longest-serving chairmen and an influential member of the Football Association’s board, has put together a blueprint that is being circulated among key figures within the game.

They include the current Premier League chairman Dave Richards, who sees merit in the proposals.

The Sunday Mirror Sport says at least seven Premier League clubs as well as key Football League clubs are keen to be part of the new breakaway.

A prominent Championship chairman, whose club has been in the Premier League, said: “Given the severe financial restraints in the Football League it would be madness not to consider the proposals.

“The considerable wealth of Premier League clubs shows no sign of subsiding. The Football League clubs are poor by comparison,” he said.

Gartside’s blueprint proposes two Premier League divisions, each of 18 teams. There would be promotion and relegation of two clubs between the divisions. There would also be one club relegated from Premier League 2 to be replaced by a club from the Football League.

Perhaps most controversial of all is the idea of inviting two Scottish clubs to join Premier League 2. The clubs are not named but would be Glasgow giants Rangers and Celtic.

In the past, both Scottish clubs have expressed a wish to join the English Premier League bandwagon. With the top flight reduced from 20 clubs, there’s also a proposal for a winter break.

And in a move that will alarm the FA and Football League – who have their own knock-out competitions – there would be the introduction of a new Premier League knock-out cup.

Gartside would like the 36 clubs to review wage control policies. This is an area that concerns smaller clubs such as Bolton, but is much less of an issue to the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United.

Gartside has been working on the project, and sounding out key associates, for almost four months. He has attempted to fine-tune his proposal before it is formally discussed at a Premier League shareholders meeting by the 20 current clubs.

Gartside and his supporters will have to overcome a number of key issues to see the revolutionary plan come to fruition.

Fourteen Premier League clubs will have to vote in favour of the proposal to get the project up and running. The FA, who backed the formation of the original Premier League, would then have to support it. (ANI)

Barcelona return to “scene of crime” Getafe By Duncan Shaw

Madrid – Barcelona are keen to stay well on top of the Spanish Liga by winning away to modest Getafe on Saturday.

Barca are currently six points ahead of dogged pursuers Real Madrid, and will go to Getafe in good heart after Tuesday’s creditable 1-1 draw away to Bayern Munich which put them in the European Champions League semi-finals.

Josep Guardiola’s team picked up no injuries in Munich. They have a fully fit squad for the first time this season due to the return to fitness of Gabriel Milito, Eric Abidal and Yaya Toure.

However, they will be returning to the “scene of the crime” on Saturday, with a sense of foreboding and trepidation.

Two years ago Barca astonishingly crashed 4-0 in Getafe in a memorable King’s Cup semi-final, and last season they lost 2-0 in the tiny Coliseo Alfonso Perez.

“It will be a difficult game,” said Barca captain Carles Puyol. “We will have to take the game just as seriously as (that) in Munich.”

Later on Saturday, Real will be away to Recreativo Huelva, who are third from bottom.

Real have won 3-2 on their last two visits to Huelva.

They have won 14 out of their 16 league games since Juande Ramos took over as coach from Bernd Schuster in December, and have halved Barca’s lead from 12 to six points.

Real defender Pepe said that “we were dead until the arrival of the new coach (Ramos).

“Now we are a strong team, with players in a good moment, and we hope to continue like this until the end of the season.”

Also on Saturday, sixth-placed Atletico Madrid are at home to lowly Numancia, while Malaga take on Mallorca and Athletic Bilbao face Deportivo La Coruna.

The big game on Sunday is between fourth-placed Valencia and third-placed Sevilla.

Valencia will be hoping to keep ahead of troubled local rivals Villarreal, who have slipped to fifth in recent weeks.

Villarreal – tired and depressed after Wednesday’s 3-0 Champions League thrashing by Arsenal – are away to tricky Valladolid. They will again by without injured Spain midfielders Marcos Senna and Santi Cazorla, who were both badly missed in London.

Sunday’s other games are bitter relegation battles. Bottom team Espanyol are at home to Racing Santander, Osasuna are away to Almeria, Betis face free-falling Sporting Gijon. (dpa)

Bayern Munich back to winning days

Hamburg – Bayern Munich, who were humbled 4-0 at Barcelona midweek in a Champions League game found back to their winning ways Saturday as they beat Eintracht Frankfurt 4-0 in a Bundesliga game. First half goals by Franck Ribery, Luca Toni and Lucio gave the home side a comfortable lead and Germany midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger gave Bayern the victory that took them to second place in the table behind VfL Wolfsburg.

Wolfsburg, who won 2-1 at Moenchengladbach, are three points ahead of Bayern on 54 points. SV Hamburg are also on 51 points and could move to second in the standings if they win at VfB Stuttgart on Sunday.

Hertha Berlin lost 2-0 at Hanover 96 and stay on 49 points in fourth place. Berlin will also be without striker Andrey Voronin in their next games, as the Ukrainian was sent off late in the game.

Schalke 04 moved closer to an UEFA Cup place with a 2-0 victory at home against Karlsruhe, while Energie Cottbus gave themselves some hope of escaping relegation with a 2-1 victory at home against fellow-strugglers Arminia Bielefeld.

The final games saw Hoffenheim continue their downward slide with a 3-0 defeat at home against VfL Bochum, while Borussia Dortmund came from behind to beat Cologne 3-1.(dpa)

Pressed earlier by Sky’s Ian Dovaston about staying beyond the end of the season, Shearer, 38, replied: “I’m here for eight games and eight games only.”

Newcastle United has been languishing in the bottom three of the table.

But former England team-mate and current Newcastle striker Michael Owen backed Shearer to keep the team in the top league.

In the matchday programme for the battle with Chelsea, Owen said: “Alan Shearer’s appointment as Newcastle manager is just what we needed to give us that extra injection of confident and enthusiasm.”

He added: “Everyone has certainly had an extra spring in their step. It’s exciting and it’s given the whole place a buzz. There are not many people who could come in and affect the club like this, but Alan is certainly one who can.”

Owen also revealed he has admired Shearer since childhood.

“I watched his career when I was a kid, I admired him as a player, and then I got the chance to play alongside him with Newcastle.

“Now it’s come full circle and here I’m playing for him as my manager. Who would have thought it?,” Owen said.

Catania win mid-table clash with Lazio

Rome – Michele Paolucci was on target and Albano Bizzarri saved a spot kick to help Catania beat visiting Lazio 1-0 Saturday in a Serie A weekend-opener played in the eastern-Sicily town.

Paolucci put Catania in front on 24 minutes, flicking home after Pablo Ledesma misfired a great assist from Giuseppe Mascara.

Catania kept up their aggressive tactics in the remainder of the first half, running minor risks when Pasquale Foggia on 44 minutes aimed a wide header and Swiss Stephan Lichtsteiner had a fast drive saved.

The Sicily hosts’ Argentine goalkeeper Bizzarri opened the second half with a great dive to deflect a free kick from his compatriot Cristian Ledesma as Lazio tried to speed up their pace.

Lazio wasted a mouthwatering equalizing chance on 61 minutes when Matias Silvestre floored Macedonia striker Goran Pandev, who took the spot kick only to see Bizzarri block it with a great dive on his left.

Striker Tommaso Rocchi had his first telling chance four minutes later, but his header bounced harmlessly to the left of Bizzarri, who then had to dive by his right post to slap a nasty drive from the Lazio forward.

Catania have now 37 points and are virtually safe from relegation with nine games left to the end of the Serie A season. Lazio were held on 41 points and slowed down their efforts to secure a UEFA Cup berth.

In later action, second-placed Juventus play a late classic game at Roma. The Turin side hope to reduce their seven-point gap from leaders Inter Milan, who appear set for an easy task when they welcome bottom side Reggina on Sunday. (dpa)
