Eerie pictures show Michael Jackson rehearsing on stage for London comeback gigs just 48 hours before he died

These are the last pictures of Michael Jackson on stage, taken just two days before he died.

The images of the singer hard at work rehearsing for upcoming tour This Is It give a glimpse of what was in store for fans at his planned gigs in London’s 02.

Jackson was due to begin the first of 50 dates at the arena on July 13, but died on Thursday after being rushed to hospital in Los Angeles.

In one of the newly-emerged images, taken on Tuesday at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles, the singer points towards the audience as backing dancers perform in front of a huge This Is It banner.

Despite looking frail, the star strikes a familiar pose and appears to be in full flow during the rehearsal.

In another photo, he smiles broadly, microphone in hand, dressed in a long shimmering mac over a top and trousers.

More than 800,000 tickets costing up to £1,000 had been sold for the concerts at London’s O2 arena which were hailed as the most ‘expensive and technically advanced’ live shows ever.

The concerts, which were due to start in two weeks’ time, had been expected to be the highest grossing pop production of all time.

Hundreds of thousands of fans who bought tickets for the cancelled gigs have been told they will be entitled to a refund.

ON DVD, THE FINAL PERFORMANCE

Footage from Jackson’s final rehearsals is already being compiled for a DVD and album.

The star is believed to have been filmed running through his songs and dance routines the day before he died.

It is expected that when released this could become one of the star’s biggest selling works.

It is understood filming took place last Wednesday during Jackson’s rehearsals at the Los Angeles Staples Centre for the 50-date This Is It tour.

It remains unclear who has official ownership of the footage. A spokesman for concert promoter AEG
declined to comment. It is expected that the star’s estate will make more money in the next year from his music than he did in the last decade of his life.

The king of pop’s family will release a series of posthumous albums, starting this Christmas. It is understood Jackson wrote a number of songs for his three children, which were not to be released until after his death.

There are also songs left over from his last album, Invincible, released in 2001.

A tribute show is planned for September with Diana Ross, Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder and Barbra Streisand said to be in talks to appear.

Driving and hearing football matches live on radio don’t mix

London, May 27 (ANI): Over two-million football fans, who listen to live matches on the radio while driving, have had an accident or near-miss, warned a study.

Released to coincide with the Uefa Champions League final in Rome, the Football Focus report has been compiled by academics from the University of Leicester.

The researchers estimate that two million drivers have fallen prey to the emotions produced while listening to the commentary of football matches.

Tests conducted by them showed that casual listeners drove at a consistent pace throughout matches, while the driving style of football fans was found to vary considerably – sometimes erratically – as games progressed.

“It acts as a warning to more than a quarter of motorists, who are likely to listen to part or all of the match while driving, that they could be putting themselves and other road-users at risk by doing so,” Sky News quoted the report as saying.

The study also found that football fans had larger changes in speed while listening to sport on the radio.

Professor Michael J Pont said: “The results we obtained suggest that, particularly during high-pressure situations within the games, there was a very marked impact on the behaviour of the subjects in this study.”

In addition, the researchers showed that 12 percent of drivers confessed of getting distracted and taking their eyes off the road while listening to live sports.

On the other hand, 15 percent admitted to taking their hands off the wheel when goals are scored.

Considering the findings of the report, the Institute of Advanced Motorists warned drivers to avoid going football crazy.

Spokesman Vince Yearly said: “I wouldn’t put it as the same league of distractions as mobile or hands-free phones but if you enjoy football and get emotional and distracted, I recommend you pull over and listen to the match.” (ANI)

Kids exposed to adult TV content become sexually active at early age

Washington, May 5 (ANI): Kids who watch adult-rated content on TV are more likely to become sexually active at an early age, according to a longitudinal study.

Released by Children’s Hospital Boston, the study revealed that exposure towards adult content during childhood was linked to early onset of sexual activity among teens.

Tracking children from age six to eighteen, the researchers found that the younger the children were exposed to adult content on TV and movies, the more they became sexually active during adolescence.

“Television and movies are among the leading sources of information about sex and relationships for adolescents. Our research shows that their sexual attitudes and expectations are influenced much earlier in life,” said Dr. Hernan Delgado, fellow in the Division of Adolescent/Young Adult Medicine at Children’s Hospital Boston and lead author of the study.

The researchers recruited a total of 754 participants-365 males and 389 females-in the study and tracked them during two stages in life-first during childhood, and again five years later when their ages ranged from 12 to 18-years-old.

At each stage, the researchers kept a log of the television programs and movies viewed, and the amount of time spent watching them over a sample weekday and weekend day.

They also used the program titles to determine what content was intended for adults, and, in the second stage, they tracked the participants’ onset of sexual activity.

The findings revealed that when the youngest children in the sample-ages 6 to 8-years-old-were exposed to adult-targeted television and movies, they were more likely to have sex earlier, compared to those who watched less adult-targeted content.

It was also found that for every hour the youngest group of children watched adult-targeted content over the two sample days, their chances of having sex during early adolescence increased by 33 percent.

However, the reverse of the above findings was not found to be true, which means that becoming sexually active in adolescence did not subsequently increase youth’s viewing of adult-targeted television and movies.

“Adult entertainment often deals with issues and challenges that adults face, including the complexities of sexual relationships. Children have neither the life experience nor the brain development to fully differentiate between a reality they are moving toward and a fiction meant solely to entertain,” said Dr. David Bickham, staff scientist in the Center on Media and Child Health and co-author of the study.

He added: “Children learn from media, and when they watch media with sexual references and innuendos, our research suggests they are more likely to engage in sexual activity earlier in life.”

The findings were presented at the Pediatric Academic Societies meetings in Baltimore. (ANI)

Dolly Parton finds Cracker Barrel a good fit

NASHVILLE (Billboard) – In a deal that seems as natural as biscuits and gravy, Dolly Parton and Cracker Barrel Old Country Store have partnered to release “Backwoods Barbie: The Collector’s Edition.”

The project not only propelled the veteran entertainer back into the top 10 of Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart but also became the first Cracker Barrel title to be tracked by Nielsen SoundScan.

“Our exclusive music program has grown to the point that participating in SoundScan just makes good sense,” says Cracker Barrel vice president of marketing Peter Keiser.

Released March 24, “Collector’s Edition” debuted at No. 9 on Top Country Albums and No. 40 on the Billboard 200, selling 12,000 copies its first week. Buoyed by Parton’s April 5 appearance on “60 Minutes” and a continued push by Cracker Barrel, the set sold 10,000 units the following week, charting at No. 14 on the country list. The album features three cuts exclusive to Cracker Barrel and new packaging.

“Backwoods Barbie” originally bowed last year on Parton’s Dolly Records. The title track will be featured in the Broadway musical “9 to 5,” for which Parton wrote the score. The musical’s formal premiere takes place April 30 at the Marquis Theater in New York.

“Me and Cracker Barrel have a lot in common: We’re both Tennessee-based and country people,” Parton said during a break from “9 to 5″ rehearsals. “I thought we’d make a perfect pairing, and evidently it’s working.”

In addition to the CD, Cracker Barrel is selling a limited-edition pink rocking chair and collector’s edition photo album. “We’re proud of that chair,” Parton says with a laugh. “We figured they needed a pink one out there. And the picture book is doing great. People like to follow their favorite artists and see what they’ve done through the years.”

Cracker Barrel has partnered with Kenny Rogers, Amy Grant and other artists on CDs, but the Parton partnership is the first to include merchandise.

“Only 1,350 rockers were made, and we sold approximately 70 percent in the first two weeks,” Keiser says. “The collector’s edition photo album has sold more the first week than any book we’ve sold at Cracker Barrel.”

She wanted to give women edge with education

Paramjit Kaur Gulshan is contesting the ensuing polls from Faridkot (reserved) Lok Sabha seat as Bathinda has been made a general constituency.

PROMISES GALORE: She promised to uplift the status of women in backward areas of Bathinda and Mansa districts through education. Her election agenda also included fight against female foeticide, setting up of an information technology institute and a modern hospital, improvement of economic conditions of farmers, weaker sections and traders and completion of Bathinda refinery to generate employment. Gulshan also promised to provide potable water to the residents, railway overbridges in Bathinda, Mansa, Rampura and Budhlada and revival of closed spinning and sugar mills.

WHAT SHE DELIVERED: Released liberal grants in education sector for infrastructural development from her MPLAD funds. Out of the sanctioned Rs 10 crore in five years, Gulshan released almost 100 per cent MPLAD funds, with only Rs 1 lakh being unutilised. She also released Rs 10.1-lakh MPLAD funds that were carried forward to her from her predecessor. Being member of the Railways Parliamentary Committee, she upgraded Bathinda railway station, was instrumental in starting Bathinda to Dhuri train and got Jammu-Ferozepur train route extended up to Bathinda. She also claimed to have got approval for railway under- and overbridges for Bathinda. Â

WHERE SHE FAILED: Information technology institute is nowhere in sight, modern hospital is still a distant dream and there has not been much improvement in the economic conditions of farmers and weaker sections. She did little to revive closed spinning and sugar mills.

ATTENDANCE IN LOK SABHA: Out of total 332 sittings in 15 sessions, Gulshan attended 226, which means her attendance was 68 per cent.

NUMBER OF QUESTION ASKED OR ISSUES TAKEN UP: Asked 21 questions on allocation of funds under the Prime Minister Rozgaar Yojana (PMRY), construction of ROBs, closure of industrial units, admission of SC/ST candidates to IITs and IIMs, filling of reserved quotas seats for SC/ST students, rural development projects, pending application for agricultural import,

subsidy on fertilisers, Bathinda refinery, payment of arrears to employees, funds under welfare schemes and grant for upgrade of urban

infrastructure.

OPINION: “She is an upright and honest person. The two politicians I admire are Paramjit Kaur Gulshan and Manpreet Badal. But at the same time I feel that they should be more expressive in airing their views,” says social activist Jagmohan Kaushal.

“Gulshan has done nothing for Bathinda. Cases of female foeticide are still being reported,” says Dr Vitull Gupta, human rights activist.

Released Taleban commander targetting UK troops

London/Kabul, Mar.12 (ANI): A Taleban commander and a former detainee at the Guantánamo Bay detention facility, who was released from prison in Kabul last year, has warned that he will target British troops deployed in Afghanistan.

According to The Times, Abdullah Ghulam Rasoul, who spent six years inside GITMO, has resurfaced as Mullah Abdullah Zakir, the Taleban’s new operations chief in Helmand and the architect of a new offensive against British troops.
Since he took over, the “asymmetric” threat from the Taleban has risen dramatically, with greater numbers of more sophisticated and powerful roadside bombs used against British troops.

“He is a serious player,” the paper quoted one Whitehall official, as saying.

Although Rasoul was released from Guantánamo after convincing interrogators that he had never held military command, Taleban officials told The Times that he had been a high-ranking commander close to the Taleban’s supreme leader, Mullah Omar.
The disclosure will complicate further President Obama’s efforts to persuade countries to take in Guantánamo detainees and allow him to close the camp within a year as promised.

Rasoul was captured in the chaos of the Taleban surrender at Kunduz, northern Afghanistan, in December 2001. He was in the lead car of a convoy of senior Taleban leaders, carrying a Kalashnikov and two Casio watches later identified as key components of homemade bombs.

Rasoul denied that the watches were his, but it now appears likely that they were evidence of his expertise in bomb making.
British officials believe that he is the mastermind behind the deadly surge in roadside bombings in Helmand since spring 2008, when he was released from Pul-e-Charkhi prison, Kabul.

Forty-four British troops have been killed in roadside bombings since 2008 and 18 in direct exchanges of fire.

In 2007 15 Service personnel were killed by bombs and 15 in direct fire.British officials and Taleban sources said that Rasoul was believed to be based in Quetta, Pakistan. (ANI)

“Slumdog Millionaire” wins big at Oscars

Rags-to-riches romance “Slumdog Millionaire” swept the Oscars on Sunday, winning eight awards including the prize for best picture in a climactic triumph for a movie that almost failed to get released.

Among the “Slumdog” honors, Briton Danny Boyle was named best director for the often dark but ultimately hopeful tale about a poor Indian boy who competes for love and money on a TV game show, and writer Simon Beaufoy won adapted screenplay.

“Slumdog” also earned Oscars for best cinematography, sound mixing, film editing, original score for composer A.R. Rahman and best song, “Jai Ho” for Rahman and lyricist Gulzar. Only seven other films in the 81-year-history of the Oscars have won eight or more awards.

Filmed in the teeming slums of Mumbai, the movie was orphaned at one point when it was dropped by financier Warner Independent Pictures, a division of giant Warner Bros. Fox Searchlight Pictures ultimately rescued the project and released the movie to critical acclaim in November.

“You’ve been been so generous to us this evening, and I want to thank you for that,” Boyle said to the Academy Award audience when accepting his trophy.

Kate Winslet was named best actress for her dramatic turn as a former Nazi prison guard who involves herself in a love affair with a teenage boy in “The Reader.”

She fought back tears when accepting her trophy and remembered a time as a child when she dreamed of winning it.

“I would be lying if I said I haven’t made a version of this speech before. I think I was probably 8-years-old and staring into the bathroom mirror,” she said.

“This would have been a shampoo bottle,” she said gesturing to the golden Oscar statuette. “Well it’s not a shampoo bottle now!”

Sean Penn, best known for tough guy roles in movies such as “Mystic River,” earned his second Oscar for best actor, portraying slain gay rights activist Harvey Milk in “Milk.”

“I did not expect this, and I want to be very clear that I do know how hard I make it for you to appreciate me, often,” he said. “I am touched by the appreciation.”

PENN GOES POLITICAL

Penn also gave one of the few political speeches of the evening, asking people to rethink their beliefs and support gay marriage.

Other top honors went to Penelope Cruz who became the first Spanish actress to win an Academy Award for her supporting role in “Vicky Cristina Barcelona.” Heath Ledger was posthumously named best supporting actor for his villainous role as The Joker in Batman movie “The Dark Knight.”

The award for Ledger, who died last year of an accidental prescription drug overdose, brought the crowd to its feet. He became only the second actor after Peter Finch to win after death. The Oscar was accepted by his father, Kim Ledger, sister Kate and mother Sally Bell.

“This award tonight would have humbly validated his quiet determination to be truly accepted by you all here, his peers, in an industry he truly loved,” Kim Ledger said.

In other awards, Dustin Lance Black won the best original screenplay Oscar for writing “Milk, and “Wall-E,” telling of a futuristic robot who finds love while on a polluted Earth, was best animated film.

“The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” walked off with two statuettes for best art direction and makeup, and “The Duchess” won for best costume design.

“Man on Wire” about a tightrope walker who dared to walk between New York’s Twin Towers was named best documentary.

In the night’s one big surprise, Japanese movie “Departures” beat the favorite, Israeli film “Waltz With Bashir,” for foreign language film.

JACKMAN ADDS MUSIC

As the ceremony began, host Hugh Jackman put the show in full musical mode with an opening routine that drew a standing ovation from the star-studded crowd.

The number covered all five of the best film nominees and had Jackman dancing hip hop, hitting high notes in a duet with Hathaway for “Frost/Nixon” and climbing to the top rope of a fake wrestling ring to crescendo his song with “The Wrestler.”

Later, he performed an old-style number in top hat and tails with Beyonce, Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens. Among the funnier acts was Ben Stiller doing an impersonation of a wacky Joaquin Phoenix, who has quit acting to take up hip hop music.

Jackman had been brought in to restore some fun to a show that has seen a slide in television viewership in recent years as Academy members have generally favored dark dramas.

Poland calls off Pakistani visit after Taliban killing of Pole

Poland calls off Pakistani visit after Taliban killing of PoleWarsaw – The Polish Senate speaker on Tuesday called off a visit from the head of the Pakistani Senate amid the recent killing of a kidnapped Polish engineer by the Taliban in Pakistan.

Senate speaker Bogdan Borusewicz said the cancellation wasn’t a move directed “against Pakistan,” but that the talks would not be possible “in such an atmosphere.”

“I didn’t see the possibility of cooperation after our countryman was murdered,” Borusewicz told reporters.

Pakistani militants released on Sunday what appeared to be video footage of the Polish engineer’s beheading. They had offered to exchange him for 61 of their colleagues held by Pakistan.

Stanczak was seized by militants who ambushed his vehicle in Pakistan’s Attock district, 85 kilometres from the capital Islamabad, last September 28. The militants first killed the driver and two guards. (dpa)

Georgia says two OSCE monitors detained by separatists

Georgia says two OSCE monitors detained by separatists Moscow/Tbilisi – Georgia’s interior ministry said Tuesday that two European ceasefire monitors had been detained by South Ossetia militia on the border of the separatist region and Georgia.

A spokesman for the ministry, Shota Utiashvili, told news agency Interfax that the two monitors from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) were detained near the Georgian- controlled village of Adziv and taken to the separatist capital Tskhinvali.

“The Georgian interior minister strongly condemns the incident and calls on the command of the occupying (Russian) forces to immediately release the hostages,” the Interior Ministry said in a statement.

Authorities in South Ossetia denied the incident, saying the two OSCE officials were released immediately after their identification papers were checked.

“At 10:20 am (0620 GMT) on Tuesday two representatives of OSCE crossed the Georgian-South Ossetian border. They were stopped by the officers from local militia of the village of Artsevi,” RIA Novosti news agency cited South Ossetian officials as saying.

The leader of the separatist province, Eduard Kokoita, said the OSCE observer had been detained for “trespassing on the territory of South Ossetia,” news agency Interfax reported.

The spokeswoman for the OSCE mission to Georgia, Martha Freeman, declined to comment.

But EU mission spokesman Steve Bird confirmed two OSCE observer had been briefly detained and were already released.

Earlier reports had said the two observers had been from the European Union’s mission to the area.

The Vienna-based OSCE has long had a mission based in the Georgian capital of Tbilisi. EU ceasefires monitors, meanwhile, have been patrolling a buffer zone around South Ossetia as part of a peace deal that ended Russia’s brief war with Georgia over the province.

The Russian-backed South Ossetian leadership has denied EU observers access to South Ossetia itself. (dpa)

German shoe-thrower pleads not guilty over attack on Wen Jiabao

German shoe-thrower pleads not guilty over attack on Wen Jiabao London- A German student who hurled a shoe at Chinese premier Wen Jiabao during his recent visit to Cambridge University in Britain pleaded not guilty to the charge of committing a public order offence Tuesday.

Martin Jahnke, a 27-year-old graduate student at the university’s pathology department, appeared at Cambridge Magistrate’s Court Tuesday before being released on bail. His trial date has been set for March 10.

Jahnke was arrested on February 2 for throwing a shoe at Wen, who was giving a lecture to students. The missile missed the Chinese leader by about a metre.

China’s foreign ministry Monday urged Cambridge University to expel Jahnke. “Education is the best help for a young student,” a statement released via the Chinese embassy in London said. (dpa)

Chennai emerging as transit hub for illegal immigrants: UN

CHENNAI: Chennai is fast emerging as the transit hub for illegal immigrants, especially Sri Lankan Tamils from LTTE dominated areas, going to
Europe, posing a major security concern, a UN report claimed here.

A study by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) on ‘Smuggling of migrants from Tamil Nadu to Europe and in particular to UK’ said Chennai has become the hub of “irregular migration” and these illegal immigrants, especially Sri Lankans of Tamil origin, were increasingly using the international airport
here as a transit point.

The study, released by Chief Secretary K S Sripathi, revealed that some of the illegal migrants were residents of LTTE-dominated areas of Sri Lanka. “Under such circumstances, security issues acquire a different dimension for India as the transit country and the destination countries in Europe as well,” UNODC said.

The report strongly favoured a separate study on irregular migration of Sri Lankans of Tamil origin.

Considering the close ethnic relationship between Sri Lankans of Tamil origin and mainland Tamils, it would be appropriate to study irregular migration from Tamil Nadu alongside that from Sri Lanka, the report said.

For the UNODC report, 169 cases of immigration-offence related records for the July 2006 to June 2007 period were examined.

All these cases were registered with the police station at the International airport in Chennai, which handles arrival and departure of about 2.8 million passengers a year, the study added.

About 23 per cent of the cases related to irregular migration of Sri Lankan nationals. Due to strict emigration checks for Sri Lankans of Tamil origin in the island nation, many of them prefer to come to Chennai and try to migrate illegally to destination countries in Europe, it said.

The study, based on law enforcement authority records, discussions with officials and public representatives, also revealed that out of the total of 169 cases, about 40 per cent cases of irregular migration were from Tamil Nadu.

Apart from migrants from the state, those from Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and some north Indian states also use Chennai for travelling to other countries.

In addition, during field visits, cases of irregular migration to the UK were noted from almost every village in Namakkal district and from certain pockets in Thanjavur district (both Tamil Nadu). Among all destinations in Europe, UK was the most preferred destination for the migrants.

Some seized forged documents had revealed that they were of exceptionally high quality and that detection would only be possible by specially trained professionals.

Gaddafi defends Somalian pirates – newspaper report

Gaddafi defends Somalian pirates - newspaper report Nairobi – Libyan leader and new head of the African Union, Moammer Gaddafi, has defended the actions of Somalian pirates as an act of self-defence against “greedy” Western nations, the Kenyan newspaper Daily Nation reported Friday.

The paper, reporting on Gaddafi’s courtesy call on AU headquarters in Addis Ababa, quoted him as saying: “It is not piracy, it is self defence. It is defending the Somalian children’s food.

“It is a response to greedy Western nations, who invade and exploit Somalias water resources illegally,” the Libyan strongman added about the pirates who have been capering merchant ships and releasing them and their crews for ransom.

His comments came as meanwhile the Ukrainian merchent vessel Faina with 31 military tanks was released after four months. Somalian pirates are currently holding about a dozen ships. (dpa)

Turkish navy prepares to send frigate to fight Somali piracy

Ankara – The Turkish navy is preparing a naval frigate to join an international force to help combat piracy off the coast of Somalia, a military spokesman said on Friday.

General Metin Durak told reporters that the vessel would be ready to embark within a month.

The Turkish government has presented parliament with a memorandum to allow Turkish ships to take part in the international operation.

The parliament is expected to vote soon on the matter.

More than a dozen ships with links to Turkey have been hijacked by pirates off the Somali coast during the recent spate of piracy. Last month two Turkish ships and their crew that were hijacked last were released by pirates after ransom demands were paid. (dpa)

EU welcomes Obama’s suspension of Guantanamo prosecutions

EU welcomes Obama's suspension of Guantanamo prosecutions Brussels – The European Union’s top justice official Wednesday welcomed US President Barack Obama’s decision to temporarily suspend prosecutions at the US’s controversial Guantanamo Bay prison camp in Cuba.

“I am extremely pleased that one of the first actions of President Obama has been to turn the page on this sad episode of the Guantanamo prison,” said EU Justice, Freedom and Security Commissioner Jacques Barrot.

The commissioner, who also acts as one of the vice-presidents of the EU’s executive arm in Brussels, said that in a country which seeks to uphold the rule of law, every defendant should be entitled to the right to defend themselves.

“Of course, the fight against terrorism must remain a priority for both the United States and Europe. We must be united in this fight, but always in full respect of human rights,” Barrot said.

EU member states are currently split as to whether to host any released prisoners.

German Interior Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble argues that since the United States is solely responsible for the fate of any released detainees, he does not see why any EU country should provide them with sanctuary.

But Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos has already said his country would be willing to “assume its responsibility” within the international judicial framework and help Obama close the prison.

Spain would, however, first want to be informed in detail about the legal situation of each of the Guantanamo inmates, Moratinos told Spain’s Punto Radio.

Commissioner Barrot said he planned to raise the issue of Guantanamo with Obama during a forthcoming visit to Washington. No date for the visit has yet been set, his spokesman said. (dpa)

Britain’s queen and Gordon Brown send good wishes to Obama

London – Queen Elizabeth II and Prime Minister Gordon Brown Tuesday sent messages of support to US president-elect Barack Obama as parties were held across Britain to mark the handover of power in the United States.

The queen, 82, who has during her reign since 1952 met all US presidents with the exception of Lyndon B Johnson, is expected to meet Obama when he comes to London for a summit of G20 nations in April.

Details of the private message sent by the monarch on the eve of Obama’s inauguration have not been released.

Brown, in a letter to Obama, said he was “ready to work very closely with his administration on many of the international challenges we face.”

Brown’s spokesman played down suggestions that he was in a race with other European leaders, such as French President Nicolas Sarkozy, to be the first to secure an invitation to visit Obama at the White House.

“I would remind you that George Bush’s first meeting with a European leader was with President Chirac of France, so we wouldn’t attach too much importance to who has what meetings when,” said Brown’s spokesman.

Meanwhile, US citizens in Britain and African and Afro-Caribbean communities were laying on parties across the country to celebrate the inauguration.

In London, Berlin, New York and Shanghai waxworks of Obama were on display at Madame Tussauds’ museums.

In London, where US citizens were granted free entry to Madame Tussauds for the day of the inauguration, people could be seen crowding around Obama’s wax figure.

“It’s a big day for me, history in the making,” said Michaela, a 22-year-old woman visiting from the US. (dpa)

Amnesty International condemns Markelov murder as “despicable”

London – Amnesty International has condemned as a “despicable crime” the murder of campaigning Russian lawyer Stanislav Markelov and called on the authorities to make clear that such crimes will not be tolerated.

In a statement released in London late Monday, the human rights group said: “Stanislav Markelov is yet another victim – very possibly murdered for his professional and courageous work to defend human rights.”

Amnesty urged the Russian government to investigate the murder “promptly, fully and objectively” and called on the authorities to “take decisive steps” to show that such such crimes would not be tolerated. (dpa)

German investor confidence tipped to edge up

German investor confidence tipped to edge up Berlin – German investor confidence could edge up again this month, a key indicator to be released Tuesday is forecast to say, amid efforts from governments and central banks around the world to halt the downturn underway in the global economy.

Drawn up by the Mannheim-based Centre for European Economic Research, the ZEW index is forecast by analysts to post a marginal increase to minus 44.5 points in January after posting a bigger- than-expected rise to 45.2 in December.

An increase in January would represent the third consecutive rise in the index.

This is despite fresh evidence of the continuing turmoil in the global banking sector and the rapid contraction in world economic growth.

However, the build-up to the release of the ZEW index has been accompanied by a new wave of government economic stimulus packages announced around the world, including Germany, as well an on-going drive by central banks to cut rates.

European Central Bank (ECB) chief Jean-Claude Trichet warned in a speech in Paris on Monday that the bank’s governing council members believe that “world and European growth in 2009 will be substantially lower than the forecasts made at the beginning of December.”

This comes after the ECB last week again joined other central banks and delivered another hefty cut in borrowing costs with economists expecting the ECB to press on with its rate-cutting cycle in the coming months.

Nevertheless, many economists believe that the first signs of an economic recovery in Germany and Europe could start to emerge during the second half of 2009 paving the way for a pickup on 2010.

Based on a survey of about 290 analysts, the ZEW indicator often sets the scene for other major European economic sentiment surveys released later in the month, including Germany’s closely watched Ifo business confidence survey. (dpa)

Greek shipping tycoon freed by kidnappers after ransom paid

Athens – Greek shipping magnate Pericles Panagopoulos was freed unharmed by his abductors after a weeklong kidnapping in which a ransom was apparently paid, according to media reports early Tuesday in Greece.

The amount of the ransom was not known.

Panagopoulos, 74, founder of Greek ferry operator Superfast Ferries, was abducted on January 12 by three men carrying Kalashikov assault rifles as he was being driven to work. The chauffeur was quickly released and reported the kidnapping to police.

His case was Greece’s third kidnapping of a prominent businessman in the last six months.

Panagopoulos was reported taken to a hospital for a precautionary checkup.

Last year, Panagopoulos sold his shipping company for about 250 million euros (325 million dollars). (dpa)
