US aid cut won’t affect anti-terror efforts, says Pak

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan army on Monday said the cut in US aid would not affect its anti-terror efforts. Washington a day earlier confirmed that it would withhold some $800m in assistance to the country’s armed forces.

“This move would have no significant affect on Pakistan’s anti-terror efforts. We will continue our operations against militants,” Pakistan’s military spokesman Maj Gen Athar Abbas said. He said the military had received no formal notification of any aid cut but pointed out that army chief General Ashfaq Kayani had declared that cash reimbursements to the military should be redirected to the government.

He said two anti-Taliban military operations in Mohmand and Kurram tribal regions, run without any external support, would continue. “The al-Qaida and other military groups operating in Pakistan are not only a threat to us but to others (as well).

White House chief of staff Bill Daley admitted on Sunday that the relationship between the two countries was experiencing difficulties and that some of the aid flow would now be stopped.

“It’s a complicated relationship in a difficult, complicated part of the world.” The $800 million in military aid and equipment is almost one-third of the total US aid of over $2 billion. The New York Times said some of the curtailed aid is equipment that the US wants to send but Pakistan now refuses to accept.

”Maybe later” is the phrase most hectic parents use to delay kids’ play request

London, May 20 (ANI): The phrase that today’s hectic parents use most often in response to their kids’ request to play with them is: “Maybe later”, revealed a new study.

Researchers found that, despite children being parents” ”main priority”, 80 per cent admit they don”t devote enough time to them.

In fact, the report found working parents spend less than an hour a day giving their kids one-to-one attention – with the average child getting just 36 minutes with their mother or father.

Children”s responses to the survey painted a similar picture, claiming parents are too preoccupied with working, tidying and checking emails to address their needs.

The study of 3,000 working parents and their children by car insurance provider Admiral found that almost eight out of ten children said they were fed up of being parked in front of the television instead of being entertained.

The trend also showed adults are parenting ”remotely” from their laptops or kitchen sink and continually promising their attention ”later”.

””The generation of ”Maybe Later” kids shows a worrying trend of parents not spending as much time as they should with their children,” the Telegraph quoted James Carnduff of Admiral, which conducted the research as part of its Family Journeys campaign, as saying.

””Parents admit their children aren”t getting enough of their attention, and children are also feeling the impact of this, desperate for their parents to spend more time with them.

””We live in ever busier times with many parents taking work home with them once they leave the office, but it seems this is having a negative effect on the relationship they have with their children.

””Parents need to remember that playing with your kids is a great way to relieve stress and forget about work.

””The responses from the children we asked show that parents can”t get away with simply sticking their children in front of the TV as that”s simply no replacement for quality time,” he added.

The research also found on top of a normal full time working week, busy parents log onto their emails as soon as they get home from work at least four nights a week.

And at least one of the two parents misses dinner twice a week due to working late.

When at home, 70 per cent of mums and dads admit they spend much of their spare time cooking and cleaning rather than playing with their children.

And 56 per cent often find themselves promising to play with their children after they have finished a bit of work, checked their emails or completed household chores.

But kids are fed up with being treated like second best.

Two thirds said mum and dad are always saying they”ll help with homework or play ”later”.

Six in ten children said they wished their parents worked less and 55 per cent wished they would leave the cleaning until after they went to bed.

Sixty eight per cent said they would like it if their parents had more time to play with them.

””Trying to balance work and home life can be difficult in modern society, but simple things like going on trips as a family can be easy and fun, and don”t need to cost a lot of money,” said Carnduff.

””We”re encouraging families to take more trips out together; these family memories are the things our kids remember from their childhood.

””Saying ”maybe later” to children needs to become a thing of the past for parents, as the results of our survey show that the nation”s children are well and truly fed up,” he added. (ANI)

Kendra Wilkinson planning another baby to save marriage

New York, May 20 (ANI): Former Playboy model Kendra Wilkinson is said to be trying to have another child with husband, NFL star Hank Baskett, to save their marriage.

Wilkinson’ sex tape rumors with her former boyfriend has reportedly created problems in her marriage.

Life & Style Magazine reported their plans of having their second kid after rumors of marital problems surfaced earlier this month.

An insider told the magazine the couple is trying for baby number two in an attempt to make their relationship strong.

“They’ve been trying for a second child for a while. And Kendra hopes it will happen sooner rather than later, the New York post quoted a source as saying.

“Kendra knows she upset Hank over all this sex tape stuff, and she wants it all to go away… Focusing on another baby would help. Plus, it would make for more great TV for the show [''Kendra''],” the source added. (ANI)

For women, marriage comes with ””numerous health risks””

London, May 20 (ANI): Marriage comes with numerous health risks, especially for brides, according to a new book.

Tara Parker-Pope””s new book,” For Better (For Worse): The Science Of A Good Marriage” analyses more than 200 matrimony studies to show that an unhappy marriage can be more harmful to long-term health than becoming single again.

Leading British marriage counsellor Andrew G. Marshall feels most of us tend to ignore marriage””s powerful effect on physical wellbeing.

“Forget eating your five a day and taking vitamins, it would be far better for your health to tell your partner you love them. Devoting time to them would be more effective in increasing health and happiness than going for a jog,” the Sun quoted him, as saying.

Marshall went on: “I can””t think of anything more important than your relationship with your partner.

“But because we have this rosy view of love conquering all, we think we can neglect it and things will just keep trundling along.

“We don””t realise that if this building block in our lives collapses, our health goes with it. I””ve had clients who get terrible migraines, panic attacks and depression.”

Marshall believes marriages can particularly affect women””s health.

He said: “For a man, marriage is wonderful because you don””t really have to think about looking after yourself.

“But women end up doing the worrying for two.” (ANI)

Josh Duhamel, Fergie marriage ‘stronger than ever’

London, May 18 (ANI): Actor Josh Duhamel admits his relationship with wife Fergie has ‘changed so much’ over the years.

The Transformers star— who was last year accused of cheating on the Black Eyed Peas star with a stripper — insists their six-year marriage is ‘stronger than ever’.

“(The love) ebbs and flows. Fergs and I have been together for six years and our relationship has changed so much. I mean, the first three months, well, there”s nothing like it,” the Daily Star quoted him as telling Company magazine.

“But, after six years, our marriage is stronger than ever, and it can get even better… I believe in love, for sure. I don”t think there”s any doubt that love is real, but there are different levels,” he added. (ANI)

Pak, US decide to resolve visa row

Islamabad, May 18 (ANI): Both Pakistan and United States have reportedly agreed to resolve all issues concerning the delay in issuing visas to each other’s diplomats.

According to sources, senior officials of both countries met each other at the Foreign Office here last week to resolve the visa row as soon as possible.

During the meeting both sides decided that no delay would be made in issuing visas from now, The News quoted sources privy to the meeting, as saying.

The United States had told Pakistan to put in place a uniform visa mechanism so that its diplomats and embassy staff stationed in Islamabad do not face any difficulty in carrying out their work in the country.

Delay in issuing visas to US officials has affected the relationship between the two countries.

Angered over Islamabad’s stubborn attitude over the issue, the Obama Administration had linked the reimbursement of funds under the Coalition Support Fund (CSF) with issuance of visas to US auditors and other officials.

Pakistan has so far received 700 million dollars of the 2.6 billion dollars claimed under the CSF over the last two years, and is claiming another 1.2 billion dollars under the aid.

Pakistan has long been demanding an early release of the funds, however, the White House had made it clear that it would release the remaining amount only after being assured of positive use of the financial package.

The US also linked the delay in the disbursement of funds to Pakistan’s denial to grant visas to American auditors.

Arm-twisting Pakistan over the delay in issuing visas to its auditors, the United States had told Islamabad that the remaining payment under the CSF would only be released after the American officials get their visas. (ANI)

Elizabeth Hurley trying to have a baby

London, May 18 (ANI): Elizabeth Hurley is trying to have a baby with husband Arun Nayar, but they “haven”t had any luck so far”.

Also, the 44-year-old beauty revealed Damian”s relationship with his stepfather.

She said: “Damian calls him daddy. He knows he”s not his blood father. He”ll sometimes forget, though, and say, ”Tell me again why dad”s brown and we”re so white.” And I”ll say, ”He”s not blood, remember.” And he”ll say, ”Yes, I knew that.””(ANI)

Abramovich backs Ancelotti’s move to have Kaka at Chelsea

London, May 16 (ANI): Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich will be awarding coach Carlo Ancelotti for winning Double title by backing his move to have Kaka at the club.

Ancelotti is a huge admirer of Kaka, who last year turned down a move to Manchester City.

Instead, Kaka headed to Real Madrid in a 56 million pounds switch from AC Milan but his first season in La Liga has been a troubled one, News of the World reports.

Kaka has been dogged by injury and has had to angrily deny rumours that he was more concerned about being fit for the World Cup than for Real Madrid’s domestic campaign.

Ancelotti is encouraged by rumours in his pursuit for Kaka.

The pair had a very successful, six-year relationship and won the Champions League together in 2007.

Abramovich has sanctioned to tighten the purse at Chelsea and that might be reflected in upcoming contract negotiations with the likes of Joe Cole and Nicolas Anelka.

And the Russian owner is hopeful that talent from the academy will push through in the next couple of seasons.

But after the outstanding domestic season, he still wants Chelsea to win the Champions League and knows he needs to back Ancelotti and give him the financial tools to compete with the superpowers in the transfer market, News of the World reports. (ANI)

Infidelity ‘makes relationships stronger”

London, May 15 (ANI): Has your relationship with your boyfriend lost its touch? Well, then you should consider cheating on him.

That’s the claim of a new study.

According to Dr Andreas Vossler and Dr Naomi Moller, who will present their finding at the British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy conference in London, infidelity makes relationships stronger as the process of owning up and talking about it can bring couples closer together, reports The Telegraph.

The boffins believe that couples who manage to forgive and rebuild their trust following an affair are likely report that their relationship is stronger.

The study, by researchers at the Open University and University of West of England Bristol, found that couples who admit to infidelity go through mourning and greiving in a similar way to dealing with a death.

Dr Andreas Vossler said: “While there is quite a bit of research on why and when individuals engage in infidelity, there is little on how couples deal with the aftermath.

“There is also a lack of research about the best ways to work therapeutically with infidelity. Couple counsellors have, because of their role, a privileged understanding of both these issues so this study makes an important contribution to the area.” (ANI)

Clinton clarifies ‘serious consequences’ remark by saying Pak must hit ‘common enemy’

Washington, May 15 (ANI): While doing nothing to ‘clarify’ her recent ‘serious consequences’ warning over attacks in the US by Pakistan based militants, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton once again stressed that Islamabad has to do more against what she described as a ‘common enemy’.

Clinton reiterated that militants breeding on Pakistan’s soil are a matter of great concern for the Obama Administration.

Speaking at the US Institute of Peace, Clinton told a gathering of experts that though Pakistan has been assisting America in the probe concerning the botched Times Square bombing, there is more that it has to do to tackle the scourge of terrorism in that country.

“There is a lot of effort that is being undertaken on the Pakistani side to provide information to our teams over here. And we just believe strongly that there is more that Pakistan must do to face what is now a common enemy,” The Daily Times quoted Clinton, as saying.

“The attacks by the extremists inside Pakistan are no longer aimed across their borders. They are aimed at destroying and killing people in mosques, in markets, in every walk of society. So this is a matter of great concern to the American people and to our government,” she added when asked to clarify her earlier comment that Pakistan would have to face “severe consequences” if terrorists from that country succeed in attacking the US in future.

Clinton explained that the relationship between Islamabad and Washington goes far beyond the counter-terrorism programme, so it (Pakistan) it must realise that any terror attack emanating from that country would have far reaching effects.

“I started by talking about the importance of the strategic relationship we are developing with Pakistan, the fact that we have expanded our interactions far beyond the counterterrorism agenda, that we are focused on trying to create a broader and deeper understanding between the two countries,” Clinton said, when asked as to what her blunt talk during the CBS interview meant.

It may be noted that following Clinton’s diatribe, the top brass of the Obama Administration had went into a damage control mode, saying Washington is ‘satisfied’ with Islamabad”s cooperation in the probe into the botched Times Square bombing plot, and that her remarks were misreported by the media.

Richard Holbrooke, President Obama”s Special Envoy to Pakistan and Afghanistan, Holbrooke had clarified that Clinton”s remarks were “misconstrued”.

“We think our relations with Pakistan have improved greatly in the last year. Clinton herself praised the Pakistan government for what it has done. And so I urge you to not to react to a misrepresentation of what she said,” Holbrooke had said.(ANI)

Christina Aguilera says no to reconciliation with dad

London, May 14 (ANI): Christina Aguilera says she sees no reason to have her long-time estranged dad back in her life.

Aguilera, 29, briefly patched up with her father Fausto in 2009 only to realise she had too many bad memories associated with him.

And now she doesn”t want to reconcile with him.

“It”s (relationship) pretty nonexistent. I”m in a place in my life where I just don”t see a reason for it. There”s always room for forgiveness – and I do forgive – but you grow up and make choices for your family,” the Daily Express quoted Aguilera, as telling Latina magazine.

In 2009 the beautiful singer opened up about her childhood memories in a documentary.

She told E!: “I witnessed a lot of unpleasant things – a lot of pushing and shoving and fighting and quarrelling. Growing up I did not feel safe. Feeling powerless is the worst feeling in the world. I turned to singing as an outlet. The pain at home is where my love for music came from.” (ANI)

Tiger Woods” ”mistress” Uchitel confesses having affair with David Boreanaz

London, May 14 (ANI): Tiger Woods” alleged mistress Rachel Uchitel has confessed that she is the ”other woman” who almost wrecked David Boreanaz”s marriage.

A lawyer for the nightclub hostess released a statement announcing the confession.

The ‘Angel’ star recently confessed to cheating on his ex-Playboy Playmate wife Jaime Bergman with an unnamed woman, and admitted he was forced to come clean about the affair after his mistress threatened to sell her story to the media.

Online gossips named Uchitel – the woman who sparked the Woods affair scandal – as Boreanaz”s mistress, but she initially refuted the claims.

“I am not in communication with him and do not wish to be. I have made no claims against him and do not plan to assert any,” the Daily Express quoted her as saying.

However, after a string of angry texts allegedly sent between the pair were leaked online, Uchitel”s lawyer Gloria Allred has revealed that her client did have a relationship with the TV hunk.

She has claimed that the star “treated her as his girlfriend” during their torrid romance.

“(Rachel) understood that he (Boreanaz) was unhappy in his marriage and had been for some time and she had reason to believe that he intended to separate from his wife,” the Daily Express quoted a statement from Allred as saying.

“He treated her as his girlfriend and also took her out in public. He called her between takes when he was taping his television show and put her on the telephone with his friends and his son. He even stayed with Ms. Uchitel when he came to New York for press tours,” added the statement.

And Allred insists her client ended the relationship because “she felt that he had not been completely truthful with her and she no longer trusted him.” (ANI)

Technology makes people happier – especially women

London, May 14 (ANI): Access to Internet and communication devices can increase people”s sense of satisfaction and well being – especially amongst women, says a new study.

The survey of 35,000 people, carried out by BCS, the Chartered Institute of IT around the world, found that access to information technology had an “enabling and empowering role”, which lead to greater “life satisfaction”.

“IT appears to empower the disempowered,” read the report. “In fact, much of the improvement in life satisfaction that arises from information technology flows to those who are less well-placed in society. Those on lower incomes or with fewer educational qualifications appear to benefit more from access to IT than those on higher incomes or with higher educational backgrounds. This appears to be the case across the globe.

“The research indicates this relationship, but not the mechanism; this is an area for further study.”

Women, being the social hub of communications in their families, societies and work, are even more benefited due to IT. Those on lower incomes also gained from IT access.

“Anything that increases the sense of personal control in our lives, such as IT, will reduce anxiety and stress and keep us mentally well,” The Telegraph quoted Donna Dawson, a psychologist, as saying.

“Through giving us choices, allowing is access to information, and putting us in touch with others, IT can increase feelings of security, personal freedom and power, which together give us greater life satisfaction.” (ANI)

South Carolina Governor Sanford admits to rekindling ties with Argentine girlfriend

Florida (US), May 13 (ANI): South Carolina Governor. Mark Sanford has revealed that he spent last weekend in Florida with his Argentine girlfriend, hoping to rekindle their relationship.

The governor and his girlfriend, Maria Belen Chapur, were spotted by tipsters for the website Gawker over the weekend, and Sanford confronted the rumors head-on Wednesday, conceding during a news conference back home that he had seen the woman.

“As a matter of record, everybody in this room knows exactly who I was with over the weekend,” Politico quoted Sanford, as saying.

“That is no mystery to anybody given what I said last summer. And, you know, the purpose was obviously to see if something could be restarted on that front, given the rather enormous geographic gulf between us. And time will tell. I don”t know if it will or won”t,” he added.

Sanford called Chapur his “soul mate” during an emotional press conference last June in which he admitted that he had been unfaithful to his wife, Jenny.

The governor said little else about his relationship with Chapur, though he suggested to reporters Wednesday that it was time to back off. (ANI)

Gates rates Pak relationship six on rate card of ten

Washington, May 13 (ANI): US Defence Secretary Robert Gates has rated Washington’s relationship with Pakistan as six on a scale of ten, adding that he expects a sustained progress in ties between both countries.

In an interview aired on CNN, Gates stressed that ties between Islamabad and Washington have improved ‘significantly’ in the recent past, and that he would give the relationship “six or a seven now.”

Gates noted that the Obama Administration is well aware about its responsibilities and respects Pakistan’s stand on its sovereignty.

“The Pakistanis are very sensitive to the size of the American footprint, the number of Americans on the ground in a training capacity or whatever. They’re also extremely sensitive about their sovereignty. And we have to respect those things,” The Daily Times quoted Gates, as saying. (ANI)
