Illegal opium cultivation on rise in Himachal Pradesh

Kullu (Himachal Pradesh), May 16 (ANI): Illegal opium cultivation has reportedly increased in Himachal Pradesh, as the towns of Kullu and Mandi have become centres of opium traders in the region.

The illegal cultivation of poppy and cannabis has increased here with each passing year, particularly in the regions bordering Shimla district.

This has posed as a threat to the credibility of the state government and the police, as critics are of the view that top brass in the police administration have failed to tackle this social hazard.

Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal has, however, said that besides awareness campaigns, efforts have been initiated to curb this menace.

“The state government is taking steps and we have started a movement to curb the cultivation of opium in the valley. The authorities are also taking help from the Narcotics Bureau to stop the illegal cultivation of opium,” said Dhumal.

The estimated land used for cultivation of opium in these areas is believed to be in the range of 175 hectares.

The estimated dry opium produced from this cultivated area is over 2000 kilograms, which is worth Rs four billion in the international market.

“The detection figures are on the rise. In 2009, first time Mandi crossed a triple digit figure of 110 cases with 112 kilograms of contraband. This year, the figure till March 31 had already crossed 100 cases,” said Sonal Agnihotri, Superintendent Of Police, Mandi District. (ANI)

Kyrgyz opposition says controls most of country

BISHKEK, April 8 (Reuters) – The head of Kyrgyzstan’s self-proclaimed government on Thursday said it had taken control of nearly all of the country.

“All regions … are under our control but we are still working on Osh and Jalalabad,” said Roza Otunbayeva, who led opposition to President Kurmanbek Bakiyev’s government, from inside the country’s parliament building.

Call for drought aid sub-regions

The South Australian Farmers Federation (SAFF) says while there has been good rainfall in some areas, it will not spell the end of the drought for all farmers.

Exceptional Circumstances (EC) assistance ended in most regions last week and SAFF president Peter White says farmers in the state’s drought-stricken areas are not coping.

“While some areas have received some rain, that doesn’t necessarily fix up the last four years of drought,” he said.

Cowell farmer Paul Kaden says the Federal Government has taken a blanket approach to taking away the assistance.

He says while most of Eyre Peninsula had a good season last year, some pockets did not.

“We’re hoping that the Government can be more flexible with their approach to EC funding. Instead of withdrawing it for the whole region, to declare sub-regions,” he said.

EC payments still remain in the Riverland and Mallee.

Grampians rates high in tourist satisfaction

A Federal Government survey has found the Grampians is one of the top regions for visitor satisfaction across the country.

The Federal Minister for Tourism, Martin Ferguson, says a study conducted last year found 65 per cent of visitors to the region were highly satisfied with their visit, ranking the Grampians sixth out of 65 destinations.

Mr Ferguson congratulated tourism businesses for providing good service and facilities.

SAFF pushes for continued drought aid

The South Australian Farmers Federation is joining calls for financial help to be continued for drought stricken farmers in parts of the state.

Exceptional Circumstances assistance ends today for 11 of the state’s 15 regions, including the south-east but it will remain in the Riverland and Mallee.

SAFF president Peter White says urgent action is needed for drought sub-regions to be established to stop serious economic and social implications.

“It’s important that they embrace this idea and there’s a precedent already been set where they reinstalled some sub-regions so we’re not asking for something they’ve never done before and certainly we would be looking as soon as possible to meet with Michael O’Brien to run through it with him and hopefully get his endorsement,” he said.

Drivers warned of Easter crackdown

Authorities have urged people in Western Australia’s Goldfields and Esperance regions to take extra care on the roads this Easter.

The annual Blessing of the Roads ceremony was held in Kalgoorlie’s St Barbara’s Square yesterday to raise awareness about the dangers of driving while tired, drunk or without a seatbelt.

Acting Sergeant Neil Clarke has warned police will maintain a strong presence on the roads this long weekend.

“We’ll have a number of vehicles out on the highway actually in the entire Goldfields Esperance district for all people travelling to and from Perth and also from Kalgoorlie,” he said.

“The majority of Kalgoorlie people do go to Esperance or Perth and we’ll definitely be out there in force ensuring that everyone does get there safely.”

Keneally accused of drought PR tour

The New South Wales Opposition is calling on Premier Kristina Keneally to reveal details about the cost of a tour that included Cowra, in the central west, during her first months in office.

The Opposition has dismissed the tour of drought affected regions last December as a public relations exercise.

Opposition spokesman Chris Hartcher says the party lodged a freedom of information request in January asking for detailed costings of Ms Keneally’s trip.

But he says the request is now 20 days overdue because the Government is refusing to release the information.

“It was us who was footing the bills every time Kristina Keneally smiled at the camera, it was us the taxpayer who footed the bill every time Kristina Keneally published leaflets showing photographs of herself and what a great job she’s doing but she’s not prepared to disclose to the taxpayers of NSW how much they actually paid for the privilege,” he said.

The Premier says she makes no apologies for visiting regional communities.

She has confirmed the Government will release the financial details of her drought visit when the full receipts and costs are available.

Gold Coast records visitor increase

A Gold Coast tourism industry executive says the city has fought through a difficult 2009 to record an overall increase in visitor numbers.

The latest Tourism Research Australia figures show domestic overnight visitors fell but day trips and international tourists produced an overall increase of 6.2 per cent.

Gold Coast Tourism chief executive Martin Winter says the number of day trip visitors increased by almost 13 per cent.

“This is something we’ve been working on very aggressively over the last 18 months,” he said.

“Our focus has been to bring back those visitors that once enjoyed and loved the Gold Coast.

“The drive market from Brisbane and Toowoomba and around those regions to come back into the Gold Coast and once again visit us and stay here.”

Fire danger period ends early

Heavy rain and cooler weather have brought an early end to the fire danger period in the Goulburn Valley and north-east Victoria.

The official fire danger period ended in regions 22, 23 and 24 yesterday and it will end in region 12 at 1:00am (AEDT) next Monday.

It means landholders can do burn-offs without a permit.

Alex Caughey from the Country Fire Authority says it marks the end of the fire season but the situation could change.

“We certainly think that the worst of the fire danger season’s over,” he said.

“We say that with the continual warning that things can change.

“Two weeks of reasonable temperatures and high winds can certainly raise the risk a bit, so we want people to be aware that there still is a risk but certainly it’s the lowest it’s been in some time.”

The fire danger period in the Albury, Greater Hume, Corowa and Berrigan shires ends on Wednesday.

Work still needed to keep GPs

A general practitioner training provider in Gippsland says the region will still have to work to keep GPs under a $630 million Federal Government plan.

The Government plans to fund hundreds more GP and specialist training places in rural and regional areas over the next decade.

The chief executive of Get GP, Susan Lloyd, says that could mean extra training places in Gippsland.

But she says the community will still have to convince graduates to stay in the area after they complete their training.

“Within the Gippsland region it’s a wonderful announcement that we need to make sure that we can optimise and work with our community to ensure that we can take this as an opportunity but also then encourage these graduates and medical professionals to stay within our rural and remote regions,” she said.

Women self-help groups meet held in Bhubaneshwar

Bhubaneshwar, Mar 5(ANI): Adhikar, a non-governmental organisation facilitated the third Cooperative Convention which brought together more than 500 members of self help groups (SHG) from across Orissa on one platform in Bhubaneswar.

The objective of the two-day event that began on Thursday was to provide self-help groups marketing and financial assistance.

Each group displayed its products in a stall and shared the experiences and problems related to products with members of other self help groups.

Despite the state government””s efforts many such groups in the state are not linked with financial institutions. They are facing problems in getting the marketing platform.

“A SHG can””t solve problems alone. We have organised this fair so that one member can learn from other member””s experience. Members can also share their experience and tell their problems,” said Malanjari Mishra, convener, Adhikar.

Elina, a Pondicherry-based researcher introduced participants to the benefits of bio mass stove, an eco-friendly stove. They were also advised to market this stove on commission basis.

“Absolutely fantastic, I think getting women to have more power and more control in whatever they can do, and being able to afford, to purchase things that improve living conditions, and to start business on their own is really fantastic. Adhikar and organistions in other regions are stepping forward for the cause,” said Elina.

Participants were motivated to bring changes in their policies to empower themselves.

Orissa has 3.87 lakh women SHGs with a membership of 46 lakh. Besides, SHG federations have also been constituted at the district, block and gram panchayat levels. (ANI)

Situation remains tense in Koraput

Koraput (Orissa), Sep. 8 (ANI): Orissa’s tribal-dominated Koraput district remained tense on Tuesday, a day after a man was killed in a clash, which broke out between the two factions of the Maoist backed tribal outfit, Chasi Muliya Adivasi Sangh (CMAS).

The densely forested Narayanpatna and Bandhugaon regions have been witness to violent fights between the members of the two factions for past some days.

Involved in forcible acquisition of lands from non-tribal farmers for past three months the outfit is now ridden with violent factionalism, one belonging to Bandhugaon and other to Naraynapatna.

“We were going to talk to them (people from Narayanpatna) asking them not to fight but they had planned to attack us. They suddenly attacked us; one of our people was injured. They killed one person and misbehaved with the ladies,” said Hari Lara, a villager in Bandhugaon region.

On Sunday, a group of tribals blocked the stretch between Bandhugaon and Narayanpatna, making movement impossible.

Both the groups have been involved in forcible acquisition of lands from the non-tribals in a bid to restore the land to the tribals.

The officials however said that they are trying to calm the situation.

“There was a clash between two groups, we are trying to calm them. The media is sensitising it. We are trying to restore normalcy in the region,” said Gadadhara Parida, District Collector, Koraput.

In the past three months, they had acquired around 3,000 acres of non-tribal land in both these regions and distributed it amongst the tribals.

The unrest had also prompted many non-tribals to flee the region. (ANI)

Mehsud, Fazalullah shift their base to North Waziristan

Peshawar, June 21 (ANI): As the Pakistan Army intensified its offensive against the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) chief Baitullah Mehsud in South Waziristan, some highly placed sources have revealed that the warlord along with his top commander, Maulana Fazalullah, has shifted base to Mirali region of North Waziristan.

According to sources, Mehsud and Fazalullah both were hiding in South Waziristan, but sneaked into North Waziristan soon after the government announced an all out operation against them.

It has also been disclosed that Mehsud held meetings with several Al Qaeda and Afghan Taliban commanders, and is trying to shift the Taliban insurgents from Pakistan to Afghanistan.

Mehsud is being accompanied by the Taliban’s Swat chapter leader Fazalullah and several other top militant commanders in Mirali, The Nation reports.

Fazalullah was spotted in Makeen of South Waziristan before he moved into the neighbouring region.

The TTP Swat chapter spokesman Muslim Khan also visited both Mirali and Makeen regions recently to discuss the situation arising out of the military offensive in the region.

It is believed that the prior announcements made by the government about initiating an operation against Mehsud in South Waziristan, helped the TTP chief and close aides to flee from the region. (ANI)
