NRI Republican candidate in sex scandal

New York, May 26 — Days after she took the lead in a poll of Republican candidates seeking the party’s nomination to contest for Governor of the US State of South Carolina, Indian-American Nikki Randhawa Haley was hit by allegations of infidelity by a political operative-turned-blogger. In a post, the blogger, Will Folks, who worked for current State Governor Mark Sanford said, “Several years ago, prior to my marriage, I had an inappropriate physical relationship with Nikki.” That statement received a sharp rebuttal from Haley. She said, “I have been 100 per cent faithful to my husband throughout our 13 years of marriage. This claim against me is categorically and totally false.”

Sarah Palin, Republican John McCain’s running mate during the 2008 Presidential election, also quickly leapt to Haley’s defence. In an online post Palin wrote that she told Haley: “Hang in there. I’ve been there. Any lies told about you will strengthen your resolve to clean up political and media corruption. You and your supporters will grow stronger through things like this.”

Pals says new US Supreme Court judge Kagan no lesbian

Washington, May 12 (ANI): A close friend of newly appointed Supreme Court judge Elena Kagan has refuted allegations and rumors that she is a lesbian.

POLITICO quoted Sarah Walzer, Kagan’s roommate in law school and a close friend, as saying onTuesday: “I’ve known her for most of her adult life and I know she’s straight. She dated men when we were in law school, we talked about men — who in our class was cute, who she would like to date, all of those things. She definitely dated when she was in D.C. after law school, when she was in Chicago – and she just didn’t find the right person.”

Walzer, half amused and half appalled to be discussing her friend’s sexual orientation, agreed to be interviewed after Kagan’s supporters decided they should tactfully put an end to the rumor, which White House officials had already tried to squelch in background interviews with reporters.

She said she decided to talk to POLITICO because the discussion of Kagan’s personal life has become a “distraction.”

“It’s taking away from substantive discussion of the issues from a really substantive person who deserves to be given the opportunity to address the substantive issues,” she said.

Another friend, former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer, a member of Kagan’s social circle at Princeton University, said: “I did not go out with her, but other guys did. I don””t think it is my place to say more.”

The rumor about Kagan has circulated for months on gay blogs and became a matter of controversy when it was cited as fact by a conservative blogger on the website of CBS News, drawing a sharp White House rebuttal. (ANI)

Stern Hu trial goes behind closed doors

The trial of Rio Tinto executive Stern Hu has now been shut to Australian officials as it enters its second phase in Shanghai.

Hu and three of his colleagues are facing bribery charges as well as charges of commercial espionage.

Yesterday, Hu and two of his colleagues admitted to some part of the bribery allegations.

The Australian consul-general to Shanghai, Tom Connor, says the second half of the trial will deal with allegations the team offered inducements to Chinese steel companies in return for commercial information.

“At the end of [this morning's] proceedings, the court declared that was the end of the proceedings related to the bribery charges,” Mr Connor said.

“The session that would open this afternoon would be related to the commercial secrets charges, which would be a closed session of the court.”

Mr Connor told reporters the defendants had been given an opportunity to personally respond to the charges during the morning session, but Hu made no comment.

“After that, the lawyers for the defendants were then given an opportunity to make their points in rebuttal in terms of the facts as they were put by the prosecution,” Mr Connor said.

“Then there was a response from the prosecution to the points that had been raised by the defence, to which again the accused and the defence lawyers were allowed to respond thereafter.”

There is confusion surrounding the bribery confessions and it has yet to be clarified what the defendants are admitting, how much was received and what it was for.

Hu has been accused of receiving bribes in two amounts which add up to more than $1 million.

His colleague Ge Mingqiang is said to have taken a similar amount and Liu Caikui about half as much.

But the allegation against Wang Yong is that he took 10 times the amount Hu allegedly did, receiving bribes worth more than $10 million.

The confessions make it almost certain the men will receive some form of jail term.

Global warming still looms large as threat to Polar Bears

Washington, May 26 (ANI): In a new research, scientists have strengthened the forecasts of polar bear populations and their likely responses to climate change, by refuting criticisms of the scientific basis for listing the polar bear under the Endangered Species Act.

The research, by a team of scientists from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), University of Alaska, University of Maryland, Canadian Wildlife Service and the US Forest Service, refutes point-by-point a widely publicized critique of polar bear population predictions.

The new rebuttal reinforces the reports written by the scientists and accepted by the Department of Interior in its May 2008 decision to list polar bears as a threatened species on the U.S. Endangered Species Act.

“The decision to list the polar bear as threatened was politically charged, and the scientific research on which it was based attracted some criticisms,” said WHOI biologist Hal Caswell, an author on two of the USGS reports and of the rebuttal.

“Our new study shows that the critique is incorrect and based on misconceptions about climate models, the Arctic environment, polar bear biology, and statistical and mathematical methods,” he added.

The rebuttal was published in the journal Interfaces online on April 22, 2009, and will be published in the July-August print edition.

In 2007, when the Department of the Interior was considering listing the polar bear under the Endangered Species Act, it asked the USGS to assemble an international team to analyze information on polar bear populations.

The team estimated the probabilities of future polar bear population growth or decline.

The USGS-led group presented its reports in fall 2007, and in May 2008, the Department of Interior listed the polar bear as a threatened species under the US Endangered Species Act.

Following that listing, a critique of the USGS reports was published in the Sept.-Oct. 2008 issue of the journal Interfaces.

“After going through their report, however, we decided we needed to do a rebuttal of this, and in the end, we went point by point to refute their criticism,” said Caswell.

According to Caswell, “We began by explaining why the sea ice habitat of polar bears is declining and showing how climate models, outputs from which we used as inputs to our analyses, are reliable for forecasting the future climate.”

“Finally, we took a look at their principles of forecasting, and found they are too ambiguous and subjective to be used as a reliable basis for auditing scientific investigations,” he said. (ANI)

Rumor: New Sony Motion Control Takes Stage at E3 2009

Rumor: New Sony Motion Control Takes Stage at E3 2009With the 2009 E3 just around the corner, the rumors that Sony will soon add full motion-control to the PlayStation 3 seem more plausible than ever.Written by John Lucas

Everybody’s doin’ the brand new dance, nooow. Come on baby. Do controller-motion! I know you’ll get to like it if you give it a chance, nooow. Come on baby. Do controller-motion! The Revolution is still in progress, never forget, and Wii’s competitors are feeling the pressure in the ’09. Rumors about Sony and Microsoft offering their own rebuttal to Nintendo’s motion-control argument have been going on even before the 3 competitors played on the same 7th generation field. In fact, Sony’s Sixaxis (now Dual Shock 3) was already offered as a response to Nintendo’s game-changing controller before the PlayStation 3 was released. However, the optional integration of Sixaxis’ motion-sensing abilities to the platform, the traditional form factor of the controller along with an inability to match the breadth of Wiimote’s motion-sensing didn’t allow Sony’s controller for the PS3 to make any waves on this waterfront.

But now the rumors rumble and ruminate all over again about a new definitive even Wiimote-like motion-sensing controller from Sony taking the stage a month from now at E3 2009, the 2009 edition of the Electronic Entertainment Expo.

Once again, the information comes from the Sources family, Ma and Pa Source along with all the little Sources. One of the sources has seen the new controller and two others are familiar with Sony’s plans to debut it at E3 2009 which begins on June 2nd. That source who laid sight upon the hopefully holy device saw a working prototype several months ago that matched up pretty well with a Sony patent discovered way back in January 2007. The controller according to this patent would use LEDs (light emitting diodes) and a webcam (most likely the PlayStation Eye) to track the controller’s movements. The cam being able to read different colors of light not to mention the shape and angle of each light would make the control, in theory, much more accurate than the Wiimote. Said to be able to track velocity and precise motions even along the front-to-back Z-axis (Wiimote sometimes has problems when keeping up with signal as you push or pull it away from screen).

The reason this rumor seems to carry more weight than the many others that have mesmerized the mind the past 2 or 3 years is because Sony is said to have approached publishers and developers for software support of the device. It is expected for the controller to look like a Sony version of the Wiimote but nothing is certain until we see (or don’t see) the results at E3 2009. If this and the PSP Go! rumor pans out, then Sony will strike wildfire on the videogaming scene in about 30 days. Of course, no comment either way from Sony.

Will they use this new controller as an integrated part of their console experience or as just as an option? Remember that Nintendo thought to use what became the Wiimote as a peripheral for the Gamecube but decided against it thinking it would be better served as the central controller in their new console. Number 9 is a 6 upside down. Maybe for Sony E3 2009 will set right what once went wrong in E3 2006. Have the audacity to hope, why don’tcha?

Indian American Guv Jindal still a favourite among GOP faithful

Washington, Mar 26 (ANI): Conservatives in America have embraced Louisiana’s Indian origin Governor Bobby Jindal as their 2012 GOP hopeful, and he played to the gallery by warning at a Republican fund raising dinner that President Barack Obama is engaged in the greatest expansion of government.

While Obama commanded a national prime time TV audience, Jindal played to the tune of GOP faithful, seeking to rebound from his widely-panned rebuttal of Obama’s address to Congress last month. He took repeated pot shots at Obama at the National Republican Congressional Committee’s annual March Dinner, Politico reports.

“America is now seeing the greatest expansion of government in anyone’s lifetime. I don’t know about you, but this doesn’t sound like the Barack Obama from the campaign trail,” Jindal said.

Jindal also took on several other issues to please attending party die-hards. Jindal – revisiting an argument Republicans used in the 2008 elections – declared that Democrats were wrong to oppose domestic oil drilling.

He offered searing remarks on education, saying that “the left hasn’t had a new idea on education since the invention of the chalkboard.”

At times, Jindal sounded like he was leading a pep rally, arguing that the question of whether Republicans wanted Obama to fail was really an intimidation tactic on the part of the Democrats.

“We honestly believe their path has dire consequences for the future of America and nether should you,” Jindal said. “I make no apologies for any of these positions and neither should you.” (ANI)

Obama likely to pick Locke as his Commerce Secretary

Washington, Feb 24 (ANI): President Barack Obama is likely to announce former Washington Governor Gary Locke as his choice for Commerce Secretary.

A senior Obama administration official said Locke was the first Chinese-American governor in the US history, Politico.com reported.

If confirmed, Locke would become the third Asian American in Obama’s Cabinet, the most any administration has ever had.

Locke served two terms as Washington governor from 1997 to 2005. He declined to seek a third term, saying he wanted to spend more time with his family.

Locke chaired the Democratic Governors’ Association in 2003 and delivered a rebuttal to President George W. Bush’s State of the Union address that year.

During his time in office, Washington state made top ten lists for the best governed state and won high marks for its tech-savvy government.

Locke is Obama’s third choice for Commerce Secretary after New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson dropped out of consideration for the post because of an investigation into pay to play allegations surrounding the governor’s office.

New Hampshire Senator Judd Gregg, a Republican, also dropped out only a week after being chosen by Obama, saying that he couldn’t completely back the president on the economic stimulus plan and other issues.
