Henin overcomes broken finger and fiery German in opener

Four-times French Open champion Justine Henin overcame a broken finger and fired-up German opponent to win her opening match at Stuttgart on Wednesday, her first clay court tournament since her comeback.

The 27-year-old was taken to a tiebreak in the first set before breaking Julia Goerges’ resistance in the second for a 7-6 6-1 first-round win.

Henin, finalist in the Australian Open in January in only her second tournament back after a break of nearly two years, is gearing up for her first visit to her favourite venue at Roland Garros since her self-imposed exile from the game.

Her last appearance in Paris was in 2007 when she won her fourth title there.

The Belgian, a wild card for the event, battled through the match wearing a splint on her little left finger which she broke in training last week.

“The improvement is pretty good, even if my finger is not yet beautiful, it’s still really blue but the pain is a lot less and that’s a nice feeling,” Henin, who has already climbed to 24th in the rankings, told reporters.

“I have started to get used to the splint during the match so I felt better today.”

“It was a tough first set, she was on fire, serving pretty well and being pretty aggressive and you slide a lot on this court, when you’re on the defensive it’s not easy to come back onto the court.

“I was much more aggressive in the second set and I was more into the game, she had nothing to lose and went for everything.”

“I didn’t play for two years so I’m just trying to find the balance with my game,” said Henin who, among other things, took part in a reality show on Belgian television during her sabbatical.

“I need matches before the French Open, that’s for sure, everything I’ve done since the beginning of the season has been pretty good. I’m just trying to get used to my career again.”

“It’s good to play matches, that’s what I need, it’s good to be back.”

World number two Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark is top seed.

Agnieszka Radwanska (5) became the first seed to go out when she lost to Israel’s Shahar Peer, who won 6-3 6-7 6-2.

Monica Bedi, other models to milk cows and make dung cakes on a TV reality show

London, Apr 16 (ANI): A new reality television show will see Bollywood stars who are known for their luxurious lifestyle milking cows and making dung cakes with their bare hands.

The BBC is producing the show ‘Desi Girl’ in order capitalise on the growing popularity of television soaps set in poor Indian villages, The Telegraph reports.

The show will pit a number of catwalk models and Bollywood stars, including Monica Bedi, against one other to find the most down home, practical woman among them.

Producers said the show will give them an opportunity to prove they are purely glamour girls or if they are true country girls at heart, the paper reports.

If the women want coffee in the morning, they will first have to milk a cow. To cook a meal, they will have to make fire fuel patties from cow dung.

“The idea is to bring the life of rural India to the urban populace. The contestants have to adapt to village life and also they have to outdo each other and win the hearts of the villagers,” said Shailja Kejriwal of NDTV Imagine.

“The villagers will ultimately decide which one of these city girls has it in her to be like them and win the title of ‘Desi Girl’,” Kejriwal added. (ANI)

“I haven”t dated since Bristol so that is going to be in the show,” the New York Daily News quoted him as saying.

“I”ve got to find [a woman], take her back to Alaska and see if she can hang,” he added.

While refusing to pass judgment on Palin”s new show, Johnston said that he welcomes the competition for “numbers.” (ANI)

White House crashers will be on reality show “Real Housewives”

Washington, Mar 26(ANI): White House gatecrashers, Tareq and Michaele Salahi, are poised to take center stage once again in the upcoming American reality show “The Real Housewives of D.C.”.

According to reports, and after much speculation, the couple, who infamously crashed the White House state dinner last November, will be featured in the series, which is scheduled to premiere in July.

It is also believed that Bravo executives were more than relieved to learn the Salahis would not be prosecuted.

The Salahis are contractually prohibited from talking about the show, and they have already shot all 12 episodes of the premiere season, The The Daily Beast reports.

Early next month, they will also participate in the “green screen shoot” – video of the cast members used to produce the glitzy opening sequence of the show- at a studio in Washington. (ANI)

Sarah Palin’s Alaska series to appear on TLC network

New York, March 26 (ANI): Sarah Palin”s travelogue series about Alaska has landed at the TLC network.

Network owner Discovery Communications has announced that it had acquired rights to the eight-part series – called ‘Sarah Palin”s Alaska’ – about her home state.

The series is being produced by Mark Burnett, who is famous for his involvement in the hit TV reality show ‘Survivor.’

TLC said that the series tells stories of some of Alaska”s unique features as seen through the eyes of its former governor.

Discovery is said to have won a competition for the series with the A&E Networks.

There is no immediate word on when it will premiere.

TLC did not disclose the terms of the Palin deal.

“TLC is grounded in great storytelling, strong characters and passionate audiences drawn to extraordinary people doing extraordinary things,” the New York Post quoted Eileen O”Neill, president and general manager of TLC as saying in a statement.

“We are confident ”Sarah Palin”s Alaska” will be another compelling television event,” Eileen added. (ANI)

Sarah Palin near deal for nature doco

Sarah Palin is reportedly close to securing a deal for a travelogue reality show.

Sources say Discovery Communications has edged out rival A and E Networks in the bidding for the project, Sarah Palin’s Alaska, and an agreement could be announced in the next few days.

It is still undecided which network in the Discovery suite would air Alaska, which is being produced by Mark Burnett Productions.

Although travelogues are on-brand for the Discovery flagship, having Palin as a centrepiece also makes the show a fit for mum-friendly TLC.

Clearly nature docs are still viable for the company – Discovery’s latest effort in the genre, the miniseries Life, debuted to 11.8 million viewers on Sunday night.

In her numerous TV appearances, Palin has proven she can draw an audience. But her show will not come cheaply.

The former Alaska governor’s asking price was $US1.2 million per episode. A network paying anywhere close to that figure would make Alaska one of the most expensive nature series ever produced.

The high-definition program will be shot in a style similar to Life and Planet Earth and will feature the 2008 Republican vice-presidential candidate acting as a guide to the Alaskan outdoors.

When it was commissioned by the BBC at a cost of $US25 million, the 11-part Planet Earth was considered the most expensive documentary the network had ever made.

Discovery Communications had no comment.

PETA fighting to stop Mike Tyson”s reality show featuring pigeon racing

New York, Mar 22 (ANI): PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) are up in arms against boxer Mike Tyson”s plans to host a reality show featuring pigeon racing.

The group wants Brooklyn prosecutors to ground the new Animal Planet show, “Taking on Tyson”, which depicts races between the ubiquitous New York birds.

PETA says the show is cruel because it exploits pigeons and glorifies an abusive sport.

“It is inherently cruel,” the New York Daily News quoted PETA general counsel Jeffrey Kerr as saying.

“The birds often end up lost in storms, being injured, or just becoming so exhausted that they”re unable to fly.

“Pigeon racing as an industry involves gambling. That”s why people do it, to make money,” Kerr said.

Bets will likely be placed over the outcome of races featured on the show, he said.

He insisted District Attorney Charles Hynes should probe the Brooklyn-based show and “make sure the production is not allowed to go forward if illegal activity is going to take place”.

“We received the letter and we”re looking into it,” Jonah Bruno, a spokesman for Hynes, said.

Animal Planet spokeswoman Patricia Kollappallil said the complaints are unfounded.

“There have never been any plans for wagering on the pigeon race,” she said.

“The birds will be cherished and respected by their owners, including Mr. Tyson,” she added.

The network says the show will start filming in Brooklyn next month and air next year.

It promises an inside look at “the intensely competitive and bizarrely fascinating world of pigeon racing”.

The show stars the Brownsville-bred Tyson, who claims to have raised pigeons all his life but never raced them competitively before.

“We love these birds,” Tyson said.

“It feels good returning to the rooftops of the city where it all started for me,” he added. (ANI)

The actor wanted to do something “totally different” after his stint in reality show ‘Dancing on Ice’.

“Playing Kurt Cobain would be far removed from the glitz and glamour of doing Dancing On Ice,” the Sun quoted him as saying.

The play narrates a fictitious meeting between Cobain and the Sex Pistols” Sid Vicious hours before Cobain”s suicide.

The ‘Nirvana’ lead had shot himself in April 1994.

Vicious had died from a drug overdose in 1979.

A pal said: “Gary wants a new challenge and this would certainly be that.” (ANI)

The 31-year-old beauty was on the show to tell hosts Phillip Schofield, 47, and Holly Willoughby, 29, about her reality show and her recent wedding to cage fighter Alex, 34.

But Jordan made a blooper by mentioning Peter, 37, and her marriage to him 10 times as she insisted she was “100percent happy” with her new life.

Comparing her second marriage to her first, she said: “It’s just completely different. It’s nice to be with someone where you can actually be yourself. There’s no stress.” (ANI)

“We’ve had cameras follow us our whole entire lives, so that part of it is no problem. I have nothing in my life that I need to hide or whatever so I’m good with it. If anything, they’re gonna see how many girlfriends I have,” he added.
