No intention of playing for England after World Cup: Carragher

London, May 20 (ANI): Liverpool veteran Jamie Carragher, who is only making a World Cup comeback because England needs him, has no intention of carrying on with the team after the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Carragher, 32, who quit England three years ago, said it will be South Africa and out again and that he only agreed to take part because of injuries.

Relaxing at England’s training camp high in the Austrian mountains, Carragher realised that his time as a player was fast running out, The Sun reports.

“I’ve been playing football since I was five years of age and in another five years I’ll probably never kick a football for the rest of my life.

“This is the chance to play at the highest level again plus, equally important, to work with this manager. Over the past 10 years Mr Capello has been the stand-out manager in world football,” The Sun quoted Carragher, as saying.

Carragher retired as an international because he was fed-up playing all over the globe as a member of the squad. It was time to concentrate on Liverpool.

He is again in the same position as he was at the last World Cup, behind John Terry and Rio Ferdinand for the central defensive positions and a reserve right back.

Carragher’s reincarnation is all the more surprising because he wrote in his autobiography how Liverpool was more important to him than England, The Sun reports.

He also told how his missed penalty in the 2006 World Cup quarter-final shootout against Portugal did not matter in the same way it would had he missed for his club.

“The stuff I mentioned in my book wasn’t so much a slight on England, it was more that Liverpool means that much to me. But I couldn’t complain if there wasn’t a great reaction against Mexico at Wembley on Monday,” he said. (ANI)

Defending champions Pak raring to go against Oz in T20 WC semi-final

Islamabad, May 14 (ANI): Ahead of their semi-final clash with Australia in the World T20 Championship, Pakistani cricketers are fancying their chances of making it into the final of the tournament for the second consecutive time in a row, and are eagerly waiting for the match to be played today (Friday, May 14).

Speaking over telephone from St.Lucia, Pakistan team manager Yawar Saeed said the mood in the dressing room is upbeat and players have vowed not to repeat their past mistakes.

“They (players) needed a bit of confidence and they got that with their victory against South Africa. Now the team has attained a level where it would not be easy for any side to beat us,” The News quoted Saeed, as saying.

“How we have reached the semis and how Australia has made it to the pre-final is immaterial now. Australia faces same challenges that we face. The better team would come out victorious,” he added.

Saeed said the Pakistan team have been closely watching videos of the match played against the Kangaroos earlier in the tournament, and have noted their mistakes.

“Players have watched the TV footage of the earlier match against the Aussies and realised where they were wrong. Every player has vowed not to repeat the same mistakes and play the match to the best of their abilities,” he said.

Another team official, who chose not to be named, said the defending champions have been busy chalking out strategies for the game from the last two days, and apart from some small issues everything has been finalized.

“There is only one place where there is a chance of making adjustments. Misbah-ul-Haq has not been able to get his hundred percent so far. Should he be dropped or there is a need for his readjustment is questions that needed an answer,” the official said. (ANI)

First World War soldier identified by DNA laid to rest, 94 years on

London, April 22 (ANI): A World War I hero, whose body was found in an unmarked grave, has finally received an honourable burial after his great-nephew’s DNA was used to identify him.

Private Harry Dibben, 33, died at the battle of Fromelles, France, in 1916, when he was shot in the chest during an attack on a German trench.

Although his death was confirmed after the Germans sent his identity tags to London, his body was not recovered.

Then in 2007, archaeologists found the remains of 250 unidentified soldiers from an unmarked grave in Fromelles.

Private Dibben’s great-nephew Richard Dibben, who was researching his family’s history, came to know of the exhumation and realised great-uncle Harry, who was a part of the 14th brigade of the 5th division of the Australian Imperial Force, could be among the unidentified soldiers.

Thereafter, Richard, 58, of Marnhull, Dorset, contacted the Australian Army, which sent him a DNA swab kit.

And after Richard provided his DNA the result confirmed that Harry was one of the unknown men.

Now Private Dibben – who emigrated to Australia in 1912 and enlisted with the army in 1915 – has been buried in a marked grave in a new cemetery in Fromelles, beside 75 other soldiers.

“It is all rather poignant. At last my great-uncle Harry will have formal recognition of his death and there will be a grave to visit,” the Daily Express quoted Richard, as saying. (ANI)

Webb eyeing fifth Open title

A “kick in the pants” has spurred Karrie Webb to the brink of a fifth Women’s Australian Open in Melbourne.

Webb realised midway through her third round at Commonwealth Golf Club that she was starting to feel sorry for herself after a tiring few weeks.

But she snapped out of her lull in time to continue a flawless round, and record a 3-under par 70 and propel herself to the outright lead.

Last week Webb fired a blistering final-round 61 to grab the Ladies Masters and a win on Sunday would give her a third Masters-Open double.

She is 6-under-par overall, one shot ahead of overnight leader Giulia Sergas of Italy, who slipped to a 2-over par 75.

Defending champion Laura Davies had a topsy-turvy round which included everything from a dunked ball to a holed bunker shot, but emerged from the confusion in outright third place at 4-under.

Webb, though, is confident of a strong finish as she continues to showcase a polished game.

“I felt like I played really solidly today,” Webb said.

“I swung really well, I hit a couple of loose iron shots the last couple of holes but tee-to-green was really solid and three birdies and no bogeys around here is a pretty good effort.”

The key, she said was conservative course management.

“Today there were a few pins you just shouldn’t try to get to,” she said.

“You just took your medicine and hit it 30 feet away and two-putted.

“It’s a bit more of a thinker’s course than last week – last week you could just pretty well shoot at the pins but this week you’ve really got to have a game plan and stick to it.”

Webb is not used to playing for such a long stretch and had to remind herself to stay alert on Saturday.

“It is the first time in many years I’ve played four (tournaments) in a row but I feel like I’ve got a good one left in me and we’ll just see if that’s good enough tomorrow.

“I’ve been tired all week and I had a bit of a lull there through the middle – not that I was getting myself into any trouble, but on 14 I hit a poor iron shot and a poor bunker shot.

“I gave myself a kick in the pants and told myself to stop feeling sorry for myself because I am a little bit tired.”

Davies unravelled but managed to stay well in the hunt and is praying for some consistency on Sunday.

“I haven’t played particularly well the last two rounds but I’ve got the ball around,” Davies said.

“The first round I thought the golf course was pretty easy – 5-under, no dramas. But the last two days – lots of drama.

“But this is the sort of week I love to have. Normally I tend to play a bit better and score worse and that is frustrating.

“I’m not saying I’m brilliant, I’m saying that normally I’m in the shit.”

Queenslander Katherine Hull (72) will go into the final round three shots off the pace.

Newton’s regrets over early romance with director John Duigan as a teen

London, Aug 18 (ANI): Thandie Newton reportedly regrets starting her career at a young age, and getting into a troubled relationship with director John Duigan as a teen.

The actress flew to Australia at the age of 16 for filming her debut movie ‘Flirting’ in 1991, and, shortly afterwards, began a turbulent six-year romance with the director of the film, then 39.

However, now after recently working with schoolgirls at Oprah Winfrey’s Leadership Academy in South Africa, Newton realised how young she was when she started her love affair with Duigan.

And the ‘Crash’ star still wonders how the filmmaker could have dated someone so “vulnerable”.

“I was 16. I didn’t tell my parents about it (the relationship) but really young people who are vulnerable have to be looked out for. I’ve just been out to South Africa to Oprah’s Leadership Academy. It educates girls from impoverished backgrounds and I was taking part in an arts week,” The Daily Express quoted her as saying.

She added: “I looked at the 16-year-old girls there. How can it possibly be right to start a serious relationship with someone that age when you are so much older? I’ve been through a lot of therapy so I sort of know why people do things now.” (ANI)

Charlize Theron wants to have five kids

London, August 15 (ANI): Actress Charlize Theron has said that she wants to have a huge family with boyfriend Stuart Townsend.

The Oscar-winner revealed that she was keeping her fingers crossed to become a mum to five boys.

“I just know I’m going to have five boys,” The Sun quoted her as telling Vogue magazine.

Speaking about her Irish actor-beau, the “Monster” and “Hancock” star added: “We’ve been together for almost nine years, so by now we’ve kind of realised that we’re going to take this journey together.”

The couple has pledged not to tie the knot until gay marriage is legalised. (ANI)

Prince Charles likens himself to ‘tree hugging’ ancestor Henry VIII

London, July 9 (ANI): Prince Charles has likened himself to Henry VIII, saying his ancestor was a tree hugger, just like him.

The Royal made the reference while urging action to stop climate change during the 2009 Richard Dimbleby Lecture in London.

“Henry instigated the very first piece of green legislation in this country. In ordering the building of a great many ships, he effectively founded the Royal Navy,” The Sun quoted him as saying.

“But there came a moment when Henry realised that creating his fleet was putting too much strain on the natural supply of wood, particularly oak,” he added.

Charles further hailed the then king’s introduction of the Preservation of Woods law in 1543, to ensure that the country did not run out of timber.

He said: “It was a simple and rather elegant piece of long-term thinking.”

He added: “What was instinctively understood by many in King Henry’s time was the importance of working with the grain of Nature to maintain a balance.” (ANI)

Judge blasts council for wasting £5k of taxpayers’ cash over dropped wrapper case!

London, Jun 20 (ANI): A judge has blasted a council officer for wasting 5000 pounds of taxpayers’ money by dragging a teenager to crown court over a dropped mint wrapper.

The sweet wrapper had blown out of Larissa Wilkinson’s car window when her 18-month-old niece unwrapped it, and when the officer spotted it, the 19-year-old girl was charged with depositing controlled waste.

Judge Roger Scott was stunned when she appeared before him at crown court, where murderers and rapists face trial.

“Can you explain to me why this charge was ever brought? She has dropped a single sweet wrapper,” the Sun quoted the judge as asking the council’s barrister Austin Newman.

“Is it controlled waste? I’ve looked it up and I don’t see how you could possibly argue it is.

“It’s the most inappropriate set of proceedings I’ve personally ever, ever seen and it’s a fantastic waste of community charge payers’ money.

“This was a grotesque misuse of the powers of the authorities,” he stated.

The judge refused to let Wilkinson sit in the dock, and invited her into the witness stand instead.

The interior design student explained that she was driving her Fiat Punto with niece Lyla Henderson when the tot unwrapped a Bassett’s Murray Mint, and dropped the wrapper in the car but it blew away.

Wilkinson, who had passed her test a month earlier, only realised what had happened when a 75 pounds fixed penalty was sent to her home in Mirfield, West Yorks.

“I decided I wasn’t going to pay. As a student I only get 30 pounds a week to live on. But also it just wasn’t fair. It wasn’t my fault and if I’d tried to stop the wrapper then I might have crashed,” she said.

She appeared before magistrates three times, but chose to be tried by jury at Bradford Crown Court.

“The judge was great. I am so pleased he was on my side. It was quite scary,” she added.

The cost of the case, estimated at 5,000 pounds, would have spiralled to 10,000 pounds if it had been heard before a jury.

“Rubbish thrown from vehicles contributes greatly to the defacement of our streets,” a Kirklees Council spokesman said.

“The person in control of a vehicle is liable for waste thrown from that vehicle whether they threw the waste out or not,” he added.

Wilkinson accepted a caution, but did not have to pay the 75 pounds.

“I hope you enjoyed your day in court,” the judge told her. (ANI)

A designer collection for differently abled people

Bangalore, May 15 (ANI): A fashion student in Bangalore has created a special collection for the differently abled people.

Senthil, a final year student of Fashion in Army school of fashion and designing, has made this special designer collection.

It’s generally noticed that these special people usually wear loose or ill-fitted clothes and don’t show preference to wear the kind of clothes people normally wear.

Senthil felt driven to work on this unique concept of special collection, which should be fashionable and also functionally suitable for these special people, having observed their difficulties in day-to-day life while clothing themselves.

To make the dress comfortable, Velcro and magnets have been used instead of zippers or buttons. Special garment has also been used to enhance the comfort of clothes.

“The main thing is studying them properly, I studied them for up to six months. The main thing is comfortableness, the second thing is comfortableness, and the third thing is the garment which we are giving should be easy to wear. For this I didn’t use buttons, zippers or anything. It should be easy to remove and put-on. I used Velcro, snap buttons and magnetic buttons,” said Senthil, the Designer.

While studying these people for six months, Senthil realised that these people needed clothes that could keep them warm. Hence, he has given lycra clothes three different treatments to make it soft and warm.

Senthil wants to create a separate designer line in clothes and shoes for these differently abled people in future. By Shweta (ANI)

Rihanna ditches Chris Brown for ‘Love God’

London, May 3 (ANI): Rihanna has moved over her former “beating” beau Chris Brown and is now in the arms of her teen-flame Negus Sealy a.k.a Love God, according to reports.

The R andB lady had allegedly fallen back in love with 24-year-old Sealy, who was said to have been lending his shoulder to the 21-year-old singer after her alleged beating at the hands of Brown.

“Negus was a shoulder to cry on. He’s a really smart guy-clever, good-looking, very cool,” News of the World quoted a friend as saying.

“All the girls adore him and call him the Love God! He and Rihanna were seeing each other before she hit the big time,” the friend added.

Sources further claimed that after getting back with Negus, Rihanna, had told family and pals that she was done with Brown and that he is surely “history”.

The source added: “Rihanna and Negus both realised there was still a strong sexual attraction between them and became inseparable. Whenever Rihanna went to the beach or out partying, Negus was always there.

“They were very careful not to be seen too closely together though as they’re trying to keep their relationship secret.”

Meanwhile, Brown, who allegedly punched, choked, and bit Rihanna before the Grammy’s, has pleaded not guilty to two felony counts in a Los Angeles court last month.

The 19-year-old rapper, who could face five years in jail if convicted, is due to return to court on April 29. (ANI)

Sienna Miller’s new addiction: golf

Washington, Apr 15 (ANI): Sienna Miller has found a sporty new hobby: golf.

The British stunner just can’t get enough of the game, and realised that hitting the green helped her reconnect with her golf-mad father.

“I actually am a golfer now. Not a very good one, but I am keen on it. I used to give my dad a hard time about being into golf, but now I completely understand it,” Contactmusic quoted her, as saying.

Meanwhile, Miller will be landing in Broadway in October.

She is set to make her American stage debut in Patrick Marber’s “After Miss Julie,” an adaptation of August Strindberg’s 1888 shocker, a timeless tale of lust and repression.

Miller previously performed the part in London in 2003. (ANI)

Life for Russian sex slave who killed stepdad after watching Fritzl’s TV trial

London, Apr 8 (ANI): A tormented girl kept as a sex slave by her stepfather for a decade shot him in the head after watching Austrian incest fiend Josef Fritzl’s trial on TV.

Olga Androva, 26, who bore Nikolay Kirkov three children, killed him with a rifle after watching Fritzl’s daughter, Elisabeth, giving evidence about her 24 years of abuse.

Olga was being held as a slave at the family home.

Now she faces life behind bars for the revenge shooting.

Nikolay, from Duminichi, central Russia, died instantly from the gunshot wound.

“Suddenly Olga realised that what was happening to her was not normal, not something she had to endure,” The Daily Star quoted a family friend, as saying.
The friend added: “If Olga goes to prison it would be a better future than the one her step-father had planned for her. So whatever happens, she will accept it.”

Fritzl, 74, was jailed after admitting raping Elisabeth, 43, more than 3,000 times and fathering seven children, one of whom he murdered hours after it was born. (ANI)

Four arrested for duping showroom owner of Rs 35 lakh

MUMBAI: Four persons were held for allegedly cheating an electronics showroom owner of 11 air conditioners worth Rs 35 lakh and selling them in
suburban Malad in north Mumbai, police said on Saturday.

According to Oshiwara police, the accused Mohammed Hussain Siddiqui (56), Imtiyaz Surti (48), Munaf Shaikh (35) and Mohammed Salim (32) were arrested on Friday.

The accused on Thursday ordered 11 air conditioners (ACs) worth Rs 35 lakh when they had gone to the showroom in south Mumbai and told the owner Mohammed Rafi that the payment would be made after the delivery, police said.

“Accordingly, Rafi made the arrangement to deliver the ACs in a tempo at Behrambaug in Jogeshwari. He had also sent one of his employees in the tempo to collect the payment from the customers,” an officer said.

However, after the tempo reached Behrambaug, the accused kept the employee busy over talks and loaded the ACs from one tempo to other, police said.

“After sometime when all of them disappeared from the scene, the employee realised that the ACs were stolen and he was cheated,” they added.

“He informed his boss about the incident who later approached the police and lodged a complaint,” police said.

Chantelle Houghton says she didn’t date Jermain Defoe for money

London, Mar 29 (ANI): Big Brother beauty Chantelle Houghton has revealed that she dated her ex-beau, football star Jermain Defoe, for love and not for the big bucks he earned.

In a recent interview, Chantelle revealed how bad it could be to be a WAG, and why she eventually left the England ace.

The reality TV star said that she initially thought that she had found her dream man in the bed-hopping footballer.

She revealed that Defoe showered her with gifts worth thousands, and even introduced her to his mum.

However, she added, the footballer’s cheating ways compelled her to end their relationship.

“You can’t buy happiness. People stand by their man through the cheating just so their lifestyle doesn’t change. I wasn’t prepared to do that,” the News of the World quoted Chantelle as saying.

It was when Chantelle realised that Spurs hero Jermain, 26, had not changed his roaming ways that she decided to end the relationship, which included talk of marriage and kids.

In tears she recalled: “Four months into the relationship I knew I loved him. I wrote it in his Valentine’s card-but he never said it back. We split up two weeks later.”

And she finally pulled the string when she saw a picture of another girl in Jermain’s mobile phone.

“I got really upset and packed my bags,” she said.

She added: “One of the last things I said to him was, ‘Hopefully one day you’ll realise I was just with you for YOU. I wasn’t after you for anything else.’ I’ll never trust anyone 100 per cent now. After a break I sent Jermain a text saying, ‘I completely understand you now. You really want to be the faithful boyfriend. But you can’t be that person. . .”

Chantelle insisted that she wasn’t with Jermain for his 60,000 pounds-a-week salary.

She said: “I wanted to make a massive point that I was with him because I LIKED him, not because I wanted new shoes.” (ANI)

World Cup 2011 will go ahead even if all matches are held in India: Bindra

Sydney, Mar 9 (ANI): ICC’s Principal Adviser and one of cricket’s most influential administrator, Inderjit Singh Bindra, is convinced the World Cup in 2011 will go ahead in the sub continent, even if all of the matches are played in India.

“We won’t jump to that conclusion, but if the situation is bad, India is big enough to stage the competition,” he said.

“The IPL has 59 matches spread over eight franchises. The next World Cup has 49 matches,” The Telegraph quoted Bindra, as saying.

Bindra also said he was 100 per cent certain that the IPL would go ahead as planned, despite the reservations of some players.

“I was reading on the internet about the Taliban’s attitude to cricket. They say Muslims should use swords not bats.

They say cricket in Asia is like opium in 19th century China – a tool of imperial powers. It is a very pernicious philosophy,” Bindra said.

Bindra believes Pakistan should not start playing at neutral venues.

“That is a booby-trap and they will cease to be a Test-playing country. How do youngsters watch and learn the game if Pakistan do not play at home?” he said.

“Give Pakistan a chance to get their act together – and they must ensure presidential-style security. But, ultimately, this is something that cannot be tackled by cricket administrators but by global powers,” Bindra added.

To make matters worse, Pakistan’s tour of Bangladesh was postponed last week, after the ICC realised the security plan featured the Bangladesh Rifles, who have just mutinied. (ANI)

Freed Guantanamo detainee says U.S. behind his torture

Binyam Mohamed, a British resident held at Guantanamo Bay for more than four years, was released and put on a plane to Britain on Monday and accused the U.S. government of orchestrating his torture.

Mohamed, 30, was due to arrive back in Britain shortly following his release from the U.S. prison camp on Cuba. His statement was issued via his lawyers after his release.

“I have been through an experience that I never thought to encounter in my darkest nightmares,” said Mohamed, an Ethiopian citizen who has British residency.

“Before this ordeal, ‘torture’ was an abstract word for me. I could never have imagined that I would be its victim. It is difficult for me to believe that I was abducted, hauled from one country to the next, and tortured in medieval ways — all orchestrated by the United States government.”

The United States agreed to release Mohamed last week after 18 months of pressure from the British government. He is the first Guantanamo Bay detainee to be released since President Barack Obama came to power.

Mohamed was detained in Pakistan in April 2002, where his lawyers say he was held for nearly four months, during which he says he was tortured and abused by Pakistani intelligence officers in the presence of a British intelligence agent.

He was taken to Morocco on a CIA flight in July 2002, his lawyers say, and again subjected to torture and abuse. Morocco has denied holding him and the U.S. government has denied that he was subjected to “extraordinary rendition”.

Mohamed has been accused of receiving al Qaeda training in Afghanistan and Pakistan and of plotting to detonate a “dirty bomb” on the U.S. transport network, but all charges brought against him have been dropped and he has never been tried.

In his statement, he accused the British government of colluding with foreign governments during his abuse and torture.

“For myself, the very worst moment came when I realised in Morocco that the people who were torturing me were receiving questions and materials from British intelligence,” he said.

“I had met with British intelligence in Pakistan. I had been open with them. Yet the very people who I had hoped would come to my rescue, I later realised, had allied themselves with my abusers.”

Kate Winslet loves working with hubby Sam Mendes

London, Jan 30 (ANI): British actress Kate Winslet admits that working with hubby Sam Mendes on ‘Revolutionary Road’ was like her ‘ideal world becoming a reality’.

The 33-year-old actress revealed that she was keen to experience the directorial side of her hubby Mendes, and finally found the script for Revolutionary Road.

“Wonderful actors like Tom Hanks would tell me that Sam was so great to work. I’d be telling them to shut up because I was starting to get a bit jealous,” the Mirror quoted her as saying.

“I wanted to experience this side of him and when I did it was as if the final piece of a puzzle of who my husband really is slotted into place.

“I was like a kid in a candy store with my ideal world suddenly becoming a reality,” she added.

She sent the script to DiCaprio and he immediately agreed to it.

“I knew there was nobody in the world who could bring Frank Wheeler to life in the way that Leo could, so working with him again was really wonderful. I hadn’t realised how much my chemistry with him since Titanic would stick,” she said. (ANI)

Carla Bruni had ‘one of those typical midlife things’ on 40th birthday’s eve

London, Jan 9 (ANI): France’s first lady Carla Bruni was as freaked out as any other woman when it came to turning 40 recently.

The model-turned-singer-songwriter had what she calls “one of those typical midlife things” on the eve of her birthday in December 2007, reports the Daily Express.

“It suddenly hit me that 40 is a symbol of adult life and at the time I really wasn’t an adult,” she says.

“It made me lose my balance a bit, as I realised I had to be an adult,” the stunner added.

“I love spontaneity and I’m a very passionate person,” she tells Psychologies magazine.

“Although I’ve grown up a lot, I hope I will always hold on to that childlike sense of wonder,” she concluded. (ANI)

Jake Gyllenhaal, Reese Witherspoon’s ‘public’ kiss

Washington, Jan 06 (ANI): Hollywood actor Jake Gyllenhaal went public with his feelings for girlfriend Reese Witherspoon when he kissed the actress at an L.A. Lakers game.

The perky couple, who rarely make joint public outings, snuggled courtside.

The kiss was captured on camera as Gyllenhaal kissed Witherspoon during a traditional time-out segment of the game, reports Contactmusic.

The couple”s lingering lip lock was caught on the Staples Center”s jumbotron screen, which hangs above the court.

Witherspoon appeared to be more than a little embarrassed when she realised the kiss had been caught on camera and everyone in the arena had seen it.

Despite her thriving romance, 32-year-old Witherspoon, who divorced husband Ryan Phillipe in 2007, has said that the ghost of her failed marriage still haunts her. (ANI)
