Uttarakhand Congress demands CM”s resignation over corruption charges

Dehradun (Uttarakhand), May 6 (ANI): Uttarakhand leader of Opposition and Congress leader Harak Singh Rawat has demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank over allegations of corruption in the allotment of a hydro-power project.

Rawat accused the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Government of being corrupt in the allotment of the power project to as many as 56 private companies.

Rawat demanded a probe into the matter and sought Nishank”s resignation.

“The State government has resorted to corruption in the hydro-power project. We have been demanding a CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) probe into the matter. The Chief Minister was justifying himself on a national television. We have demanded that he should resign on moral grounds,” said Rawat.

He added that the Congress would not allow the State Government to sell the power project to private companies. The power station in question is capable of generating up to 800 Megawatts.

Meanwhile, Nishank said that the process of allotment would only take place after all clearances have been received and Memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed with the companies.

“The 56 companies got power projects on the basis of tender. Only those companies got the tender that were technically sound. After the clearance of objections, MoUs will be signed with the companies,” said Nishank.

“I want to repeat that till now, nobody has got even half a megawatt of power,” he added.

The Chief Minister further said that that a committee of secretary-level officials has been formed to look into the objections raised over the allotment process.

Congress protests against Uttarakhand Government in Dehradun

Dehradun (Uttarakhand), Sep 7(ANI): Activists of Congress party on Monday protested against the Bharatiya Janata Party- led Government and accused it for ignoring the areas represented by the Congress here.

State Congress Chief Harak Singh Rawat led a protest march and sat on a hunger strike outside the Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal’s residence in Dehradun.

“The BJP ruled Government has completed two and a half years, but it has ignored opposition, especially Congress ruled legislative regions. Be it roads, drinking water schemes, construction of bridges, schools, universities and tubewells, BJP has not done any development work in our ruled regions,” said Harak Singh Rawat.

However, BJP described the protest as a political stunt and said that the Government would address the issues of the opposition.

“Today (September 7), the Chief Minister is out of station. He will return tomorrow from New Delhi. He will hold discussion with legislators of opposition and brief them about development works taking place in their regions,” said Uttrakhand Parliamentary Affair Minister Prakash Pant.

“Today’s act (protest) was politically motivated. The leader of opposition should have given a thought to his decision,” Pant added. (ANI)

Honey stolen from Corbett National Park

Nainital, June 23 (ANI): Forest Department officials and rangers of Jim Corbett National Park have arrested three persons on charges of setting fire in the forest for scaring away the bees from their hives and collect honey.

“When our staff members woke up, they saw smoke coming out of the forest. When they went out to check they saw two persons sitting under a tree and another one on the tree, who was extracting honey from the beehive. They then held those persons,” said D S Rawat, Superintendent, Corbett National Park, Ramnagar, Uttarakhand.

Admitting their guilt, one of the arrested persons said that the smoke emitted by the fire would keep the bees at bay and let them collect honey from the hives on treetops.

“We take some green leaves and then light them, after which smoke comes out, which chases the bees away and we take out the honey,” said Lalan, one of the arrested persons.

Officials also recovered three kilograms of fresh honey from the nabbed persons.

In the recent past there had been several instances of fire raging in the forestlands posing a grave threat to the flora and fauna of the famed Jim Corbett National Park. (ANI)

Violence leaves Punjab poorer by Rs.7,000 crore: Assocham

New Delhi, May 26 (IANS) Punjab has incurred property losses of up to Rs.7,000 crore on account of the violence by followers of the Dera Sachh Khand sect, according to conservative estimates arrived at by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham).

“Social tension in Punjab has caused a loss of Rs.6,000-Rs.7,000 crore of public property and pushed behind its investment prospects to a significant extent,” Assocham said in a statement Tuesday.

Punjab has been wracked by widespread violence by followers of the Dera Sachh Khand sect protesting against the attack on religious leaders in a gurdwara in Vienna Sunday.

Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Hoshiarpur and Phagwara towns of Punjab continued to be under curfew for a second day Tuesday. But the curfew was being relaxed for two to four hours.

In this connection, Assocham secretary general D.S. Rawat appealed to the state administration “to immediately restore proper law and order in the state, especially in Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Phagwara and Ambala”.

“Any delay in curbing the social tension might cause a great harm to the economy of Punjab,” Assocham said.

Fire in Uttarakhand forest

Chamoli/Gochar/Devprayag/Hrishikesh (Uttarakhand), May 6 (ANI): Forest areas have catught fire in Uttarakhand, destroying forest and disturbing wildlife.

The fire is not only polluting the environment, but has also become a grave danger for the people living near the forests.

The fire has been reported from Chamoli, Gochar, Devprayag and Hrishikesh areas of the state.

The dry leaves in the forest catch fire easily.

The residents believe that the fire is caused due to either carelessness of the people. Misinformed villagers light the fire hoping to getting better grass from the forest after the fire.

“One of the reasons in that while passing through the forests some people through burning cigarette butts. Secondly sometimes, children do it unknowingly, and thirdly the villagers, they start the fire. Till they do not understand that the forests are for them, the fires cannot be curbed. There has to be awareness and till the villagers are aware, the government cannot do anything,” said M. Negi, a resident.

The residents are unhappy, as the government is not doing much to help them. There have been no steps taken by the government. In some places, the villagers have had to fight the fire themselves.

“There have been no measures taken by the government. At a few places, villagers tried to curb the fire, but because they had no proper means, there were some casualties.” said B.S Chaudhary, another resident.

The forest Department though says that they are looking into the issue. A chief conservator of forests has been made in charge, who would talk to officials and residents in order to research. The department though admits that they may have been at fault.

“I admit that maybe the people are not happy with the working of the Forest Department. Maybe they are unhappy with our schemes. We are going to research on these aspects so that, policies can be framed in the near future,” said R.B.S Rawat, Principal Chief Conservator Of Forests (PCCF), Uttarakhand.

The blame may go to anyone, but the fires are destroying resources and disturbing the environment. (ANI)

BJP rebel turns Tehri LS battle into a triangular one

With rebel Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Munna Singh Chauhan joining Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) on Thursday, it is now certain that Tehri Parliamentary seat is going to witness a three-corner fight. The BSP has named Chauhan as its candidate from Tehri replacing Pramod Uniyal, a professor with Garhwal University.

“Munna Singh Chauhan is our candidate from Tehri and we hope that the BSP wins the seat this time,” announced Ramachal Rajbhar, Mayawati’s trusted deputy and incharge of Uttarakhand unit in capital. He said like Uttar Pradesh, BSP’s formula of social engineering would also work in the hill state.

Chauhan, a two-time MLA, was vying for a BJP ticket from Tehri parliamentary seat. Disgruntled, he had tendered his resignation a couple of days ago as a BJP MLA after BSP supremo Mayawati reportedly assured him a ticket.

Meanwhile addressing an election meeting, Chauhan made it clear that he sees BJP as his enemy number one. “It is a party full of opportunists which only believes in caste and religion,” the firebrand leader alleged.

Chauhan also lashed at the Congress but most of his speech was focused on the BJP and its leaders. He claimed the BSP would bring change in all five Loksabha seats within 15 days.

“Team of workers will make a whirlwind change in the hill state,” said Chauhan. After fresh delimitation, much of the demography of Tehri seat has been changed.

The state capital region now falls in Tehri which was earlier part of Pauri. BSP manager’s hope more than hundred slums in capital will vote in favour of Mayawati’s elephant.

Apart from BSP’s Munna Singh, the Congress has fielded Vijay Bahuguna, son of Hemvati Nanadan Bahuguna and former chief minister of UP. And the BJP has pinned its hope on arch shooter Jaspal Rana. An influential eunuch Rajni Rawat is also trying her luck from Tehri.

While launching an attack on Chief Minister B.C. Khanduri, Chauhan equated himself with Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna. “I am doing exactly what Bahuguna did after resigning from the Congress,” he said adding Khanduri is on a “crossroad of dilemma”.

Ex-servicemen happy with Khanduri, to support BJP

There is good news for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Uttarakhand because the executive body of a state-based ex-servicemen association has decided to extend its support to the party in the coming Lok Sabha elections. The executive body of the All India Ex-Para Military Personnel Association, Uttarakhand held a meeting on Monday in state capital.

During the meeting member of executive council discussed about the role of their association in 2009 Lok Sabha elections and decided to support BJP in the state. Speaking to Hindustan Times SS Kothiyal, president of the organisation said, “After detailed discussion about the role of our organisation in the coming Lok Sabha polls we have decided to extend our support to the BJP in the state because the state government lead by BC Khanduri has performed well in the last two years and brought overall development in the state.

” He further said that Khanduri is the only leader in the state who has foresight for future development of this hilly state. Besides, he has also taken special care of welfare of military and paramilitary force personnel in Uttarakhand.

It is believed that members of this organisation had played an important role in the victory of TPS Rawat in the Pauri by-election. As per the rough data available with the organisation, total number of voters that are associated with organisation could more than 3 lakh in the state.

Besides, it has been asked to the members of the association to establish personnel contact with voters with the purpose to mobilise them to cast their votes in favour of BJP in the state.

Munna quits, BJP woes multiply

Bharatiya Janata Party MLA Munna Singh Chauhan’s decision to quit the party from his Vikasnagar seat is the latest problem to have besieged the saffron outfit in Uttarakhand in recent weeks. But instead of accepting that problems exist and making an attempt to address them, the BJP leadership seems to prefer to overlook them even as it claims it will win all five Lok Sabha seats in the hill state.

On Thursday evening, Chauhan met Vidhan Sabha Speaker Harbans Kapoor and submitted his resignation. He also quit the BJP and is now set to enter the electoral fray as the BSP candidate from Tehri.

As he enjoys a sizeable support base in Vikasnagar and Jaunsar, Chauhan’s exit will have an adverse effect on BJP candidate Jaspal Rana’s prospects. But while BJP leaders admit the fact within closed doors, they are not willing to state it publicly.

“Chauhan’s resignation would have no impact on the B.C. Khanduri government or in Tehri. We are set to win all five seats in the state,” was what BJP spokesperson Vishwas Dawar had to say.

Similar ‘ostrich like attitude’ adopted by the BJP in dealing with its coalition partner Uttarakhand Kranti Dal may cost the party heavily in Nainital from where BJP state unit chief Bachi Singh Rawat is contesting. The regional outfit wanted the Nainital seat to be given to them as part of a pre-poll deal.

But BJP’s unwillingness to adjust resulted in the UKD fielding its president Narayan Singh Jantwal from the seat. Like Chauhan in Tehri, Jantwal too has the potential to hurt Rawat’s chances on entering the Lok Sabha.

Another instance was its failure to negotiate with Independent MLA from Pauri Yashpal Benam. The legislator withdrew support from the Khanduri government and is now poised to contest as an Independent from the Pauri Lok Sabha seat.

A former chairman of the Pauri municipal board, Benam has the potential to eat into votes of sitting BJP MP T.P.S. Rawat. Since Chief Minister B.C. Khanduri (a former MP from the seat) also belongs to Pauri, winning the seat is a prestige issue for the BJP. Replacement of its candidate from Haridwar in favour of a saint under Vishwa Hindu Parishad pressure and a comparatively weaker candidate in Almora are other issues that should bother the BJP..

Coalition partners to fight it out

Ending over a week of speculation, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Uttarakhand ruled out any possibility of seat sharing adjustment with Uttarakhand Kranti Dal (UKD) – its coalition partner in the state. On March 24, during a meeting between senior BJP and UKD leaders in the state capital, there was talk of a possible adjustment with the BJP withdrawing its candidate from one of the five seats in Uttarakhand in favour of a UKD candidate.

But on Thursday, the saffron party’s state unit president and its candidate from Nainital Bachi Singh Rawat said there is no likelihood of withdrawing any candidate. “We had talked with the party leadership, but it is unlikely that any further adjustments would be made,” said Rawat.

The BJP had earlier withdrawn its candidate from Haridwar, Madan Kaushik, under pressure from the VHP and replaced him with Swami Yatindranand Giri. Commenting on BJP MLA from Vikasnagar Munna Singh Chauhan issuing statements against the party and threatening to quit, Rawat said it’s a minor difference and talks are underway to placate him.

“There seems to be some miscommunication with Chauhan and senior party leaders Trivendra Singh Rawat and Ajay Bhatt are in touch with him to address his grievances,” he said. Chauhan, a leader with mass appeal in Vikasnagar and Jaunsar areas, has accused the party of sidelining him and is having talks with the UKD and Bahujan Samaj Party on the possibility of him or his wife Madhu contesting from the Tehri Lok Sabha seat.

Like the Congress, the BJP is also planning to adopt a two-pronged strategy to target the UPA government and highlight the achievements of the B.C. Khanduri government. “There is an undercurrent in our favour.

Judging by the sentiments of voters from Uttarakhand and across the country, it seems they have rejected the UPA government and its policies,” said Rawat. He listed price rise, failures on internal security, which have resulted in terrorist attacks, and deterioration in relations with neighbours like Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bangladesh as major failures of the UPA. “Repealing of POTA, procrastination on hanging Afzal Guru for the attack on Parliament and appeasement of minorities has boosted the morale of terrorists and led to a surge in attacks,” said Rawat.

The BJP leader listed implementation of the 6th Pay Commission recommendations reservation of 50 per cent seats in ‘panchayats’ for women and creation of over 30,000 new jobs as the major highlights of the state government in the past two years. “In just two years, the Khanduri government has performed much better than what the previous Congress government did in five years.

The tide is in our favour and if we manage our campaign effectively,” said Rawat.

UKD president pitted against saffron party’s chief in Nainital

It’s now official. The party president of Uttarakhand Kranti Dal (UKD) will contest against the party president of its alliance partner, the BJP, in Nainital Parliamentary seat.

UKD has decided to field Narayan Singh Jantwal after BJP president Bachi Singh Rawat denied giving any seat to UKD. “Narayan Singh Jantwal will be the party’s candidate from Nainital,” announced Diwakar Bhatt, cabinet minister in the B.C. Khanduri government. Speaking with mediapersons in the state capital on Thursday, Bhatt said now the UKD has no choice but to field candidates in all five Lok Sabha seats.

Only last week senior leaders including party presidents of both UKD and the BJP met to clear growing differences between them. The BJP had reportedly promised to reconsider at least one seat in favour of the UKD. Apart from Jantwal in Nainital, Ranjit Viswakarma will contest from Almora reserved seat, Shailesh Guleri from Tehri, AP Juyal from Pauri and Rajkumar Saini from Haridwar Parliamentary seat.

Irked over the BJP’s decision to go alone in polls, senior UKD leader Kashi Singh Aeri said, “On the national level many alliance partners with the NDA have parted away due to the BJP’s reckless behavior and in Uttarakhand too the BJP has repeated it.” He said the move would further sour the relationship between the two.

On question of continuing with the BJP government, Aeri said he still believed that his party should “come out of Khanduri government” before contesting elections against BJP candidates. “However this is my personal view and whatsoever we are bound with the party’s view” he added.

Embarrassed with the Aeri’s remark, cabinet minister Diwakar Bhatt was quick to respond. “We will come out of government at the right time but the time has not come,” he said.

Asked whether the UKD still advocates for Gairsain as the permanent state capital, the UKD minister said the party is waiting for the outcome of Dixit Commission report and plan their move accordingly.

Rawat, Congress out to break 20-year jinx

It’s been two decades since former Uttarakhand PCC chief Harish Rawat won a Lok Sabha election. Coincidentally it was also 20 years ago that Congress won the Haridwar Lok Sabha seat.

In 2009, the fates of both Rawat and the Congress seem to be interlinked with the senior Congress leader getting the party high-command’s nod to contest from Haridwar. Almora, Rawat’s home constituency from where he won his last Lok Sabha battle in 1989, had become reserved following delimitation and hence he was shifted from the hills of Kumaon to the plains of Haridwar.

Between 1989 and now, Rawat has lost the Almora seat four consecutive times and in 2004 his wife Renuka too failed to win from there. Similarly, after 1989, when the Congress’s Jagpal Singh won from Haridwar, the party has failed to win favour of voters in the region.

Last year, after the end of his Rajya Sabha tenure, Rawat had surprised many by announcing his decision not to contest any election till 2010. But he is back in the fray and hopes to end his losing streak and revive Congress fortunes in Haridwar as well.

“I had decided to remain away from election due to adverse family circumstances. But now that the party has given me an opportunity, I have decided to take up the challenge,” he told HT. In his list of schemes for Haridwar, the Congress leader aims to achieve a synergy between agriculture and industrialisation while keeping in mind religious sentiments and traditions, develop new townships, improve education and strengthen rail, road and air connectivity.

“The BJP has failed to give attention to Haridwar’s issues in the past. My aim would be to realize the tremendous potential of the region as I understand the issues of this place very well,” he said.

Rawat doesn’t mind the ‘outsider’ tag given to him by his opponents and says it is a ploy used by the BJP and other parties like the BSP and Samajwadi Party because they have no issue to counter Congress. “I am a Pahari from Almora, but for the past 44 years, I have been involved in issues of other areas as well.

I am the most frequently seen politician in Haridwar, have visited almost every village and remained in touch with residents in the area for over three decades,” he said. Blaming his past losses from Almora on the BJP wave and the agitation for a separate state, Rawat is hopeful that after 20 years, he will be able to revive his electoral fortunes.

BRO gets eight Shaurya Chakras, two for working in Taliban infested Afghanistan

New Delhi, Mar 25 (ANI): The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) achieves a distinction when the President Pratibha Devisingh Patil would confer on Thursday as many as eight Shaurya Chakras on its men.

This is the first time in more than a decade that the premier road building defence organisation has bagged the most Shaurya Chakras, the country’s third highest non-combatant gallantry award, in a year and all of them have been awarded posthumously.

For the first time in its close to five decades long history, BRO’s dozer operator Zalim Singh would be conferred with Bar to the Shaurya Chakra, having won the same award twice over. On April 16 last year Zalim Singh was crushed under shooting boulders as he tried to clear a strategic road near village Theing in north Sikkim for a column of tanks.

Two Shaurya Chakras have gone to men of the project Zaranj in Taliban infested Afghanistan. Superintendent Mahendra Pratap Singh and mason C. Govindaswamy died on April 12, 2008 in a suicide bomb attack by Taliban militants on their convoy while it was passing between Delaram and Minar on the Zaranj-Delaram highway, which was handed over on completion by India to Afghanistan just two months ago.

Another two BRO men, Assistant Executive Engineer Santosh Kumar Singh and driver Jaikrit Singh Rawat have won the award in Kashmir, working on the Kishtwar-Sinthan Pass, an alternate axis to link Kashmir Valley. They were martyred in an ambush on June 13, 2008 on their way back from Sinthan Top.

Driver Surinder Pal was martyred in an attack by militants in Meghalaya on May 26 while supervisor M. Sundaram, deployed on the Kailash Mansarovar route, fell in a 60 meters deep valley of Kali river on Indo-Nepal border on 2nd July last year. Dozer Budhu Khan of project Vartak was hit by debris while clearing the Hapoli Sarli-Huri road on Feb. 22, 2008. (ANI)
