405th installation anniversary of Sri Guru Granth Sahib

Agra, Sep 19(ANI): People of all religions and communities gathered to celebrate the 405th anniversary of the installation of the Sikh holy scriptures, Sri Guru Granth Sahib, at Gurudwara Maithan in Agra.

This was a significant landmark for the Sikhs, as the 275-year-old handwritten scripture, whose front pages are written with gold, was put on display for the devotees.

“The Guru Granth Sahib has the preaching or ‘bani’ of famous poets like Kabir ji, Guru Ravidas ji and Baba Farid ji. It is symbol of humanity and so people of all the religions have gathered here to celebrate the ‘Prakash Parv’, the installation ceremony together,” said Kanwldeep Singh, President of Sri Gursikh Sabha.

Also on display was a miniature scripture of Guru Granth Sahib, which has been preserved at the Gurudwara Maithan for the past 15 years.

“We have Guru Granth sahib of 1 X 1 inches long. The British for the convenience of Sikh soldiers especially designed the holy book during the First World War, as they could not carry a normal sized book in the battlefield. The miniature Guru Granth Sahib was printed in Germany. It was kept in a silver box,” said Gyani Kashmir Singh, head Granthi of Gurudwara Maithan.

To mark the anniversary of the installation of Guru Granth Sahib, special prayers were also held in the Gurudwara premises, which once the house of Mai jassi that was visited by Guru Sri Tegh Bahadur.he gurudwara is currently undergoing renovation and will be expanded to facilitate the large number of devotees visiting the shrine.

A total of 20 million dollars will be spent on renovation and construction of new Gurudwara, a 100-bed hospital and a community hall.

Gurudwara Maithan also upheld the tradition of Langar, which has been followed over the centuries. Guru Arjan Dev and Mata Ganga set the precedent of preparing and serving food to the hungry, in the langar hall, where all social, economic and religious barriers collapse and all – the laborer, the lord, the peasant and the prince, are treated alike and served the same food in the same manner.

Uttar Pradesh Govt. transfers 13 IAS officers

Lucknow, May 23 (ANI): The Uttar Pradesh Government, in a major administrative reshuffle, has transferred 13 Indian Administrative Service officers (IAS).

The decision was taken on Friday soon after the government transferred 34 Indian Police Service (IPS) officers, including police chiefs of 17 districts.

In the latest changes, Kanpur Divisional Commissioner Dinesh Singh has been sent to Allahabad while Sant Ravidas Nagar District Magistrate Dipika Duggal has been appointed as Secretary (Home), official sources said.

Rai Bareilly DM Anita C Meshram has been sent to Unnao in the same capacity while her Unnao counterpart M Devraj has been transferred to Badaun, they said.

Ferozabad District Magistrate M Nitishwar Kumar has been sent to Social Welfare Department as Special Secretary while Kaushambi DM Charanjeet Singh Bakshi has been transferred to Rai Bareilly.

District Magistrate Mathura Santosh Kumar Srivastava has been shifted to Sultanpur. Managing Director Backward Class Finance Development Corporation M P Agarwal has been appointed as Mathura DM.

District Magistrate Sultanpur R K Singh has been sent as Special Secretary Revenue, Special Secretary Personnel Anil Kumar has been sent to Mainpuri as DM.

District Magistrate Badaun Navdeep Rinwa has been sent to Personnel Department as Special Secretary, DM Mainpuri S Ministhi has been sent to agriculture Production Commissioner office as Special Secretary.

Chief Development Officer Agra Surendra Singh has been sent to Sant Ravidas Nagar as DM.

On Thursday, the Supreme Court had said that on Monday it would hear the Uttar Pradesh government’s plea against Allahabad High Court’s order threatening contempt of court proceedings on irregularities in recruitment in the police constabulary.

The State government, in a controversial decision, had dismissed all the 20,000 police constables, who were been recruited through an alleged irregular process during the Mulayam Singh government regime in 2004-06. (ANI)

Maoists kill three in Bihar

Khaira (Bihar), Mar 17 (ANI): Armed Maoists attacked Khaira village in Bihar’s Lakhisarai District and killed three persons on Monday night to avenge the murder of one of their men last week.

“They targeted three houses and were on a look out for people who had helped the administration ,”Anoop Yadav, a relative of the victim, said.

The attackers have taken a group of women from the village hostage, threatening to kill them if their enemies are not brought to them.

“The attackers said that who ever has run away from the village will have to be brought to them or else the women in the village will be killed. The reason behind it was to know why Ravidas (Maoist) was killed,” Ujjhan, a resident.

Thousands of people have been killed since the Maoists began their insurgency in the late 1960s in a town called Naxalbari in West Bengal.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has called the rebels the biggest challenge to the country’s internal security. (ANI)

Polling begins for Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal by-elections

Umroi, Jan 25 (ANI): Voting has begun for the assembly by-election at Bhadohi reserve segment in Sant Ravidas Nagar in Uttar Pradesh this morning.

The polling will decide the fate of sixteen contestants. The main contenders are from Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Samajwadi Party (SP), Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Three hundred sixty five polling booths have been set up for three lakhs forty five thousand voters to cast their votes. One hundred fifty three polling booths have been identified as sensitive.

The by-poll has been necessitated following the death of a BSP MLA.

Counting of votes will take place March 1.

Tight security arrangements have been made to avoid any kind of untoward incident.

Nearly twenty companies of security forces including five companies of Central para military forces, fifteen companies of Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC), and 1000 state police have been pressed into service.

Inter-district borders of the segment with Allahabad, Mirzapur, Varanasi and Jaunpur has already been sealed.

Voting is also underway in West Bengal for Bishnupur (West) assembly by-election.

This seat had fallen vacant due to death of CPI (M) MLA Ratin Sarkar. (ANI)

Nation celebrates Guru Ravidas Jayanti and Maghi Purnima

New Delhi, Feb 9 (ANI): Guru Ravidas Jayanti and the festival of Maghi Purnima are being celebrated with much fervour and gaiety throughout the country today.

Celebrating the last month of winter on Maghi Purnima, a large number of people in Uttar Pradesh are taking holy dips in rivers at several places including Varanasi, Ayodhya, Mathura, Chitrakoot and Garhmukteshwar.

The month long bathing festival at Allahabad will also come to an end today with fifth and last religious holy dip on the occasion of Maghi Purnima.

Nearly 2.5 million pilgrims are taking holy dip in Sangam, the confluence of Ganga, Yamuna and mythical Saraswati.

Meanwhile, President Pratibha Devisingh Patil has greeted fellow citizens on the occasion of Guru Ravidas Jayanti.

“Guru Ravidas, a great Saint and social reformer fought against inequality and injustice and worked for the establishment of a society based on equality, compassion and justice,” she said.

“May we derive inspiration from the teachings of this great Saint and reformer to rededicate ourselves for the building of a more tolerant society,” Patil added.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh also extended his warm wishes to the people of the country. He said that the teachings of the Guru have been a source of knowledge and wisdom and would continue to inspire the egalitarian spirit of our society.” (ANI)

Guru Ravidass’ village remembers him with devotion

Khurali (Hoshiarpur), Jan.28 (ANI): Guru Ravidass is today remembered as one of the first social reformers who objected to caste-based discrimination that existed in Indian society during 16th century.

Ravidass’s endeavour influenced a lot of people, who were motivated to raise their voice against the discrimination and looked up to him as their Guru, the master. The places visited by Guru Ravidas as a tribute have now become pilgrimage centres.

Thirty five miles from Hoshiarpur city, Khurali Village is gearing up to welcome tourists.
Khurali holds great religious significance, as it is said Guru Ravidass visited the place and stayed here between circa 1515-19.
The Guru, who dedicated his life to betterment of the society and in bringing the equality, has been a source of inspiration to the villagers.
But, Ravidass belonged to a low caste and it caused problems with some people of the higher caste. It is said he was even jailed and punished.
According to Dr. Kewal Kumar, a researcher on religion, the place is linked to a sorry tale of Guru Ravidass.

“This spot, where we are standing, was the residence of Dhanna and Devia, the guards. Ravidassji stayed here with these two Sikhs. But when the ruler of this region became aware of Guru Ravidass Ji’s Punjab visit, he sent two soldiers to arrest him. The King locked Guru Ravidass and made and him to grind wheat into flour with this flourmill. He king punished Guru Ravidass because the latter being a `Shudra’ (low caste), was posing as a guru. The king was against a low caste person becoming a guru of the rich people,” said Dr. Kewal Kumar, a researcher on religion.

The Union ministry of Tourism is now planning to develop Khurali as a tourist destination as a tribute to the great saint of medieval India.

A Gurudwara has been built at the place where Guru Ravidass stayed and meditated.

It’s a 320,000 dollars project and will include build infrastructure including Display Hall cum Tourist Facilitation Centre, Tourist Reception Centre and Washrooms.
“People get their wishes fulfilled. We come here with great devotion and belief, and all wishes are fulfilled. A mile-and-half away from here is the Charan Ganga rivulet where devotees a take bath to get rid of their problems,” said Paramjit Singh, a devotee.

“To popularize rural tourism, rural tourist destination for khurali, ministry of tourism, government of India has sanctioned 159.57 lacs, to construct a reception hall-cum-museum or tourist affiliation centre, so that khurali village becomes popular among tourists,” said R. K. Bhatti, Asst. Director with Ministry of Tourism, Govt. of India.
The tourism project will provide create better roads as well as other infrastructure development in the area. The women and unemployed youth will also get self-employment opportunities in tourism support activities such as lodging, cuisine and guiding. By Sawinder Singh(ANI)
