Eight charred to death

Faizabad, June 6 (PTI) Eight people, including four women and a two-year-old child, were charred to death as the Bolero in which they were travelling caught fire after being hit by a speeding truck coming from the opposite direction on FaizabadLucknow national highway, a senior police official said here today. Seven of the jeep”s occupants, all of whom were killed on the spot, belonged to the same family while the other person who died in the mishap was its driver, Faizabad SP RKS Rathore said.

The accident occurred on the intervening night of Saturday/Sunday when Azizullah, a trader belong to Basti district, was going to Amausi airport in Lucknow to receive his son coming from Dubai after four years, Rathore said. The flight timing was early morning so the family was rushing for the airport.

Immediately after it was hit by the truck, there was a short circuit in the Bolero jeep and it burst into flamwes. Within no time the fire engulfed the whole jeep, killing all its occupants, the police official said.

A search has been launched to nab the truck driver who is absconding, he said.

Produce GCM documents of Samba spy case, Tribunal to Army

The Armed Forces Tribunal on Monday asked the Army to produce court martial documents of five soldiers punished for their involvement in the over 30-year-old sensational Samba spy case.

In the case, around 50 personnel of 168 Brigade deployed along the Line of Control were punished after being accused of spying for Pakistan on the basis of statements of former gunners Sarwan Dass and Aya Singh.

The Tribunal Bench headed by Justice S S Kulshreshtha asked the Army to produce the general court martial (GCM) documents of gunners Banarasi Das, Milkhi Ram, Satpal, Harish Singh and Balkar Singh, who have served jail terms, before it by June 30.

The appeals of the soldiers who are seeking to get their names cleared were among the cases transferred from the High Court to the Tribunal after it was launched in August last year.

The Tribunal said failure to produce the documents would draw an “adverse inference” about Army’s contention in the case.

“This is the first time in over 30 years since the case came up that we would get to see the court martial documents. I am hopeful that this will make it easier for us to get justice,” counsel for the five gunners Deepak Bhattacharya said.

In the case of two other accused Captain A K Rana and Captain R S Rathore, whose pleas are still pending in the Supreme Court, the Tribunal said it would hear their case on September 7.

Rana said that he and Captain Rathore were cleared by the Delhi High Court in 2000, but the verdict was challenged by the Army in the Supreme Court.

After the HC verdict, they filed pleas seeking compensation for the jail term served by them which have also been transferred to the Tribunal.

Vegetarian president brings own cooks to China

Beijing, May 29 (IANS) President Pratibha Patil, a vegetarian, has flown in her own cooks for her six-day China visit, fully aware that she was visiting a nation known for a cuisine that is primarily non-vegetarian and where gourmet dishes are whipped out of many animal, bird and fish species.

In fact, the president who attended a sumptuous state banquet Thursday given by her Chinese counterpart Hu Jintao at the Great Hall of People bypassed the non-vegetarian dishes and tucked into a meal which included a special dish of white gourd.

Officials said Patil, who is staying in the majestic Hotel Raffles Beijing, has a huge suite which has a big kitchen, with separate entry for staff members. Patil is in China on a six-day visit that is taking her to Beijing, Luoyang and Shanghai.

‘She is a simple eater. And likes her dal, rice and one vegetable. Her chef knows her liking,’ an official told IANS, not wishing to be identified as he was not supposed to talk to the media.

Not only chefs Laxman Rai and Dheeraj Mani Bhatt are taking care of the president’s needs, but also her husband Devisingh Ramsingh Shekhawat, son-in-law Jayesh Rathore and grandson Dhruvesh Rathor who are accompanying her in the visit.

As Chinese dining etiquettes demand that guests do not decline any food that is served to them, Chinese authorities were informed about the president’s preferences in advance. ‘She was not offered any non-vegetarian fare (at the state banquet),’ said the official.

A huge steel box labelled with bold letters ‘grocery’ was flown to China. In fact, it was one of the few things that were loaded first in the special aircraft Air India One in which the president and her entourage travelled.

‘We are carrying everything for the journey. We know her choices so we have packed everything. We wanted to be fully prepared,’ the official told IANS.

Chinese banquets typically serve about ten courses that include food cooked from animal, fish or bird anatomy.

Court to pronounce verdict in Ruchika molestation case today

Chandigarh, May 20 (ANI): A court in Chandigarh on Thursday will pronounce its verdict on former Haryana Director General of Police (DGP) SPS Rathore”s plea challenging his conviction in Ruchika molestation case.

Rathore has three cases pending against him in the court, all filed by Ruchika”s family and friends.

Ruchika”s family lawyer Pankaj Bharadwaj had earlier filed two FIRs against Rathore.

The lawyer had claimed that the first FIR was filed for forging documents like the inquest report and the other for illegal detention of Ruchika”s brother, Ashu, who was kept in illegal detention and tortured at the behest of Rathore.

The third case is that of abetment to suicide against him. The family has alleged that Ruchika was expelled from Sacred Heart Convent in Chandigarh due to Rathore”s influence.

Teenager Ruchika had killed herself three years after the incident by drinking poison.

The CBI is investigating whether Rathore drove Ruchika to suicide after she filed molestation charges. An inquiry by the Chandigarh administration has found that Ruchika was unfairly expelled from her school in 1990.

The report also concluded that the expulsion took place under pressure from “an external influence”.

The Special CBI court had earlier held the former cop guilty under Section 354 IPC and sentenced him to six months imprisonment and had imposed a fine of Rs 1,000 on him.

Rathore has been stripped off his meritorious police service medal. (ANI)

Ruchika case hearing adjourned till April 15

Chandigarh, Mar 10 (ANI): A Chandigarh court on Wednesday adjourned the hearing of the Ruchika Girhotra molestation case, which involves former Haryana Director General of Police (DGP) SPS Rathore till April 15 on the plea that his lawyer was still recovering from an assault on him last month.

Rathore arrived in the court accompanied by his lawyer-wife Abha Rathore and a Haryana cop. Abha Rathore told the court that Rathore”s counsel N D Sharma was still recovering from the assault on him outside the court premises last month.

Rathore was on February 8 punched and stabbed thrice with a blunt instrument outside the court premises by Utsav Sharma, a student of the prestigious National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad. The former DGP”s lawyer had also sustained injuries in the attack and both had to be hospitalised.

Rathore has three cases pending against him in the court; all filed by Ruchika”s family and friends.

Security agency buildings, hotels under terror threat in Lahore

Lahore, June 20 (ANI): The Lahore Commissioner, Khusro Pervaiz, has warned that the militants could target some strategically important buildings in the city.

Pervaiz said that the terrorists are on the look out for the right opportunity to carry out terror strikes on the offices of law-enforcement agencies and top hotels located here.

According to The Daily Times, the Lahore CCPO, Pervaiz Rathore, in his letter to Pervaiz, has warned that militants may trigger attacks more powerful and devastating than those that have occurred in the recent past.

The militants could target important buildings such as the IB headquarters, Central Police Office, Special Branch offices, CID offices, Police Investigation Headquarters, NADRA and passport offices, Rathore feared.

Following the increased threat perception, Lahore police have been asked to beef up security at the Pearl Continental and Avari hotels, as they are also in the terror hit-list. (ANI)

Pak only ‘orchestrating terrorism’ by blaming India for every terror attack: Editorial

Islamabad, June 19 (ANI): While terror strikes across Pakistan continues unabated, authorities have not spared a single opportunity to blame India for creating havoc inside Pakistan, but an editorial carried out in Pakistan’s leading daily highlights the fact that Islamabad must introspect on its own deeds before putting the blame on its neighbour.

Recently, Lahore police nabbed one Zubair alias Naik Muhammad, allegedly involved in the terrorist attack on the visiting Sri Lankan cricket team.

Zubair is a member of the Punjab Taliban, an offshoot of the banned terror organisation Lashkar-e Jhangvi, which has strong ties with Al Qaeda, the editorial said.

While announcing the arrest of Zubair, and his nefarious links with several militant groups, the Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) of Lahore, Pervaiz Rathore, forgot that it was him who had held India responsible for the terror strike on the islanders immediately after the brazen incident on March 3, it added.

How many times we have seen Pakistan denying links with extremists, or providing safe haven to terrorist organizations? Innumerable, the editorial opined.

However, Pakistan, by denying the world known fact, is actually orchestrating terrorism, which is now even threatening its own sovereignty, it went on to add.

It feared that what was really disturbing was the involvement of militias based in South Punjab in different terror acts.

“Mumbai was attacked from South Punjab. Most of the suicide-bombers have been from this region which is characterised by large feudal holdings in the countryside and extreme poverty in the cities,” the editorial said.

It quoted the famous US writer, Selig Harrison, as also having raised fears about the increasing threat perception emanating from the region which stretches from Jhang to Bahawalpur, and is dotted with madrassas.

“The danger of an Islamist takeover of Pakistan is real. It comes from a proliferating network of heavily armed Islamist militias in the Punjab heartland and major cities, directed by Lashkar-e-Toiba, a close ally of Al Qaeda, which staged the terrorist attack last November in Mumbai,” said Harrison.

Apart from the madrassas, which are categorised by the people as jihadi and non-jihadi, there are mosques that supply fighters and suicide-bombers to the Taliban and Al Qaeda, the editorial said.

The trend had started during the Taliban rule in Kabul in the 1990s and has continued after the establishment of Lal Masjid as an entrepôt of warriors moving between Pakistan and Afghanistan, the editorial concluded. (ANI)

Tutul, music director said that his favourite number in the film was ‘Mayee re’.

No evidence yet of Indian link to Lahore attacks: Malik

Rezaul H Laskar Islamabad, Apr 11 (PTI) Investigators had not yet found any conclusive evidence to suggest that India was involved in recent terror attacks on the Sri Lankan cricket team and a police training centre near Lahore, Pakistan’s Interior Ministry chief Rehman Malik said today. Distancing himself from Lahore police chief Pervaiz Rathore’s claim yesterday about India being linked to the two terror attacks, Malik said evidence is still being collected and investigations were still underway.

There is nothing “on record as yet” to suggest India’s involvement in the two attacks, he said. Malik said he had tried to speak to Rathore to find out on what basis he had made his claims but was unable to reach him.

Rathore “has been asked as to what basis he took the name of India,” Malik added. The terror attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore on March 3 was being probed by a judicial commission and officials were “not supposed to talk” on that issue, he told a news conference.

Asked about Home Minister P Chidambaram’s comments that the upcoming general election in India could be disrupted by terror attacks carried out by the Pakistani Taliban, Malik said Islamabad is prepared to extend full cooperation if New Delhi shares information in this regard. The two countries shared a common enemy, he said.

Credible evidence of Indian involvement in Lahore attack: Pak

Lahore, Apr 10 (PTI) In a surprising statement, Pakistan today said it has “credible evidence” of Indian involvement in the March 3 terror attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team here, more than a month after it ruled out any Indian link to the incident. “With the help of other intelligence agencies there has been considerable progress in this case.

One thing is for sure that there is an Indian hand behind the attack,” Lahore police chief Pervez Rathore told reporters here. “I must tell you that there is credible evidence of Indian involvement in the attack,” he said.

Rathore’s comments come nearly a month after Interior Ministry chief Rehman Malik ruled out any Indian involvement in the attack that killed eight people and injured several others, including six Sri Lankan cricketers. PTI.

Lahore top cop sees India’s hand in Lankan team attack

There has been another low for the India-Pakistan relations. On Friday, the head of the Lahore police, Pervaiz Rathore, said there was “evidence” of an Indian involvement in the attack on Sri Lankan cricketers at Lahore’s Liberty Chowk.

They also say there is evidence that there was an Indian link in the recent attacks on police facilities in the country.

Lahore police say they have found “evidence” of the Indian involvement in Liberty and Manawan Police Training Center. Manawan is just 15 km away from the Indian border.

The development comes a day after Home Minister P Chidambaram told NDTV that despite all efforts Pakistani soil continues to be used for terrorist acts against India.

“Security situation in South Asia has deteriorated,” he said.

No Indian hand in Lahore attack, reiterates Sri Lanka

Colombo, April 10 (IANS) Surprised at the Lahore police chief’s claim of ‘an Indian hand’ in the attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team last month, Sri Lanka Friday reiterated that there was ‘no Indian involvement’ in the terror strike that left six players wounded.

‘Our Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama had clearly said last month there was no Indian involvement in the attack on our cricketers in Lahore. We continue to maintain that position and there is no change in that,’ a Sri Lankan foreign ministry official told IANS Friday when asked about the fresh reports from Lahore.

Lahore’s police chief Pervez Rathore Friday said: ‘With the help of the security agencies, we have made much progress and our investigations are continuing. But one thing I can tell you is that there is strong evidence of an Indian hand.’

India has rubbished this suggestion.

A group of 12 young terrorist ambushed and sprayed bullets and fired rocket-propelled grenades at a coach carrying Sri Lankan players to the Gadafi international stadium to play on the third day of the second and last Test against the host Pakistan March 3.

Six players and the team’s assistant coach were injured. Six Pakistani police officials escorting the bus carrying the players and two civilians were killed in the attack that shook the entire cricketing world.

Addressing a media conference here March 9, Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister Bogollagama firmly ruled out allegations of Indian hand in the attack and said Sri Lanka has ‘conveyed this position to Pakistan’.

Pointing out that India has been helping the island nation in the fight against terrorism, Bogollagama, however, said that the involvement of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in the attack could not be ruled out.

‘Indian hand in attack on Sri Lankan cricketers’

Lahore/New Delhi, April 10 (IANS) Lahore’s police chief sprang a surprise Friday, suggesting an Indian hand in the terror attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team in the city last month, a suggestion that New Delhi promptly trashed.

‘With the help of the security agencies, we have made much progress and our investigations are continuing. But one thing I can tell you is that there is strong evidence of an Indian hand,’ Lahore police chief Pervez Rathore told reporters in Pakistan’s cultural capital.

‘It’s a red herring and does not serve any purpose,’ was Indian Minister of State for External Affairs Anand Sharma’s immediate riposte in New Delhi.

‘Nobody has ever accused India of such things. Rather, we are the victims of attacks from Pakistani soil. They should put their own house in order,’ Sharma added.

Rathore’s claim is surprising, since the report Pakistan had submitted to Sri Lanka on the March 3 attack has not mentioned any Indian involvement.

The Pakistani media, too, has got into the act, deprecating the government tendency to suggest an Indian hand in the attack. Six Sri Lankan players and the team’s assistant coach were injured in the attack, while six Pakistani policemen and two civilians were killed.

The ‘flurry of charges’ linking India to the attack ‘make no sense at all’, an editorial in a leading English daily said March 5, while another cautioned that such finger pointing would only widen the India-Pakistan rift.

‘The flurry of charges from the media and members of the government that our neighbour to the east may have had a hand make no sense at all – given that the gunmen have not been apprehended and no other evidence points in this particular direction,’ The News said in an editorial headlined ‘No closer to the truth’.

On its part, Daily Times referred to the ‘planting’ of a police report that apparently warned that India’s spy agency RAW was planning to target the Sri Lankan cricketers and said it was meant to ‘widen the rift between India and Pakistan and bring relief to the terrorist elements under pressure from the Pakistan army in the tribal areas’.

The editorial was headlined ‘Reaching out for denial again’.

Armed terrorists had ambushed the Sri Lankan team bus while it was on its way to Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium for the third day’s play in the second cricket Test against Pakistan.

The Sri Lankan government immediately canceled the tour and flew the team back home.

Indian hand in Sri Lankan cricket team attack: Pakistan

Lahore, Apr 10 (ANI): Pakistan on Friday claimed that it has credible evidence of Indian involvement in the terror attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team last month.

“With the help of intelligence agencies, there has been considerable progress in this case. One thing is for sure that there is an Indian hand behind the attack. I must tell you that there is credible evidence of Indian involvement in the attack,” Lahore police chief Pervez Rathore told reporters here.

Rathore’s comments came nearly a month after Pakistan Interior Ministry chief Rehman Malik ruled out any Indian involvement in the attack.

Meanwhile, Minister of State for External Affairs Anand Sharma dismissed the police chief’s claim as preposterous.

On March 3, around a dozen heavily armed assailants attacked the Sri Lankan cricket team’s bus and a police escort as they drove to Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium for the ongoing second and final Test.

At least six cricketers were wounded, while six policemen and a driver were killed during the ambush. (ANI)

Ex-IPS man who fought rioters now in BJP

Retired IPS officer A I Saiyed, who had a brush with the rioting mobs in the 2002 post-Godhra violence in Ahmedabad, has joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

A day after joining the party, reportedly on the invitation of the BJP Gujarat president, Purshottam Rupala, Saiyed said, “I have received over two dozen phone calls greeting me for the bold initiative I have taken.” But why the BJP, that too at this juncture? He said the party is better than the Congress to join hands “at this juncture”.

“People are happy at this development and even met me personally. But their names cannot be revealed now,” he said when asked about the reaction from his community, adding, he would rope in more members from the community.

A 1978-batch IPS officer, Saiyed retired as an Additional Director General of Police and currently lives in the Muslim-dominated ghetto of Ahmedabad city- Juhapura. A native of north Gujarat, Saiyed said he joined the BJP as he was impressed by Chief Minister Narendra Modi’s administrative acumen.

When Saiyed was the Joint Director of the Gujarat Police Academy in 2002, during the riots, a mob of around 1,000 people had stopped his official car and tried to attack him after spotting his nameplate on his uniform. He remembers that his driver, a Hindu, had raced the car away to safety.

Saiyed said the incident has no bearing on his joining the BJP, and that he is willing to do any work that would be given to him in the coming days of election campaign, including canvassing for Patan BJP candidate Bhavsinh Rathore among local Muslims.

“I have done so much for all communities during my service that my presence itself in the area will be good enough for the people to vote for our candidate,” said Saiyed, who feels the dual policies of Muslim leaders pushed him to the BJP. Talking of ideology? “The Congress has an ideology, but only on paper,” he said

What will he gain from joining the BJP and what was his expectation, especially when the top BJP leaders openly tell Muslims that they could join the party at their own risk and peril without expecting anything? Saiyed responded to this saying he was not expecting any favours. “Expecting things like a party position or ticket is not my nature,” said Saiyed, whose entry to the BJP was cleared at all the levels after a prolonged process.

Welcoming this, BJP’s minority cell convener Sajjad Heera said it was a sign of the party gaining acceptance among “good Muslims” and this would improve the party’s image among the community members soon.
