K. Chandrasekhara Rao quits as TRS chief

Hyderabad, June 19 (ANI): Faced with several senior party leaders revolting against him and holding him responsible for the poll debacle during Lok Sabha elections, Telangana Rashtra Samiti President K Chandrasekhara Rao resigned as party chief on Friday.

The resignation is likely to worsen the turmoil already being faced by the Telangana Rashtra Samiti since poor show during Lok Sabha polls

Party general secretary Madhusudhana Chary said Rao had sent in his resignation but it was yet to be accepted by the party’s executive committee.

A section of the rebel leaders have allegedly made allegations on Rao that he has turned the party into a family concern by giving tickets to his son and nephew.

“I am pained over the way my family has been targeted in the recent days,” K. Chandrasekhara Rao said adding that he would like to continue as an ordinary party worker and continue to work for the cause of separate Telangana state.

Also, a group of rebel TRS leaders launched a new non-political organisation-Telangana Vimocana Samiti-to continue the struggle.

He alleged that some anti-Telangana forces had conspired to damage and weaken the TRS.

Rao, who after quitting the Telugu Desam Party had launched TRS and movement for Telangana state has resigned many times earlier from different positions.

He resigned twice as the member of Parliament and won in by-elections from Karimnagar. This time he however moved to the Mahbubnagar Lok Sabha constituency which he won by a margin of 19,000 votes.

Earlier on June 3, 2008, KCR had resigned as the party president accepting the moral responsibility for the party’s defeat in the by elections following the enmass resignation of the TRS MPs and MLAs.

In 2009 Lok Sabha elections, Rao and the film actress Vijayshanti were the only two TRS candidates to be elected to the Lok Sabha. (ANI)

TRS lodges its candidates to avoid horse-trading

Hyderabad, May 15 (ANI): In a bid to prevent horse-trading of its candidates, the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) on Thursday lodged all its candidates and leaders at the party headquarters in Hyderabad.

All nine Lok Sabha and 45 assembly candidates would stay put at the Telangana Bhavan for the next couple of days, as the party fears of poaching of its candidates by other parties and alliances.

The TRS, which fought the assembly elections in alliance with the Third Front, has recently announced its support for the National Democratic Alliance.

Accusing the Congress Party of betrayal, senior TRS leader N Narasimha Reddy said his party has decided to support the NDA because it has committed to carve out a separate Telangana state from Andhra Pradesh within 100 days of coming into power.

“We want the NDA to come to power as it has promised us that within 100 days of coming to power it will give us Telangana state. The UPA has betrayed us and kept us on hook for five years. To beat the UPA, we have formed a grand alliance,” Reddy said.

K Chandrashekhar Rao-led TRS is keeping its cards close till the declaration of the Lok Sabha results. If the NDA comes to power, the TRS has decided to ask them to pass the Telangana resolution in the first assembly session.

“We will wait till tomorrow when the results will be declared and after that whoever forms the government and if NDA, then our demand is that they must pass the Telangana resolution in the first assembly session,” added N Narasimha Reddy.RS, which fought the assembly elections in alliance with regional Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and the two Left parties, may also play a crucial role in the formation of the new state government.

Despite these two tie-ups, the TRS switched its support to the NDA and snapped its ties with the Third Front last week. (ANI)

Telangana Rashtra Samithi rules out alliance with Congress

New Delhi, May 15 (ANI): The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) on Friday ruled out any alliance with the Congress, saying it had ‘betrayed’ the people of Telangana on separate statehood issue.

TRS, which broke away from Third Front and switched over to National Democratic Alliance (NDA) last week, said the party would not join anyone else.

“We are with the NDA. We are not going anywhere. The NDA is going to form the government at the Centre with more than 300 MPs. We are not going to join anyone else,” TRS chief K. Chandrashekhar Rao told reporters here.

Rao further said he had decided to support the NDA, as it is committed to carving out the Telangana state from Andhra Pradesh.

“The NDA is committed for the cause. They have included the formation of Telangana state in their election manifesto. They are serious on this issue. They have also said that they will make an announcement in this regard within 100 days of coming to power,” he added.

The TRS Chief also attacked the Congress for ‘betraying’ the people of Telangana on separate statehood issue.

“They have to pay heavy price for betraying the people of Telangana by not fulfilling the promise they made to us five years back,” he added.

Rao exuded confidence on NDA forming the next government at the Centre.

“The NDA will form the Government at the Centre and TRS will support it,” he added. (ANI)

Security tightened ahead of first phase of elections

New Delhi, Apr 15 (ANI): With the Election Commission identifying the twenty-three thousand villages that would go to polls for the first phase of Lok Sabha elections on Thursday as “vulnerable”, the onus is now on the central and state governments to ensure peaceful elections.

A total of 1,715 candidates, including 122 women, are contesting for the 124 seats, where over nine lakh officials have been deployed across 1.85 lakh polling stations.

Deputy Election Commissioner R. Balakrishnan has assured to deploy Central paramilitary forces along with state security forces at the polling booths.

The government has also ordered for a stringent check on the state borders to prevent movement of criminals and liquor.

The elections are expected to be conducted in a much better manner this time as photo electoral rolls will be used in almost all the constituencies going to the polls in the first phase. These photo electoral rolls would help in preventing bogus voting and easy identification of voters.

Also, this time the voting would happen post delimitation where the outlines of several constituencies have been redefined.

Campaigning for 124 constituencies in 17 states and Union Territories for the first phase of elections ended on Tuesday. The stage is now set for the voters to elect members to the 15th Lok Sabha.

While all the 20 seats in Kerala, two in Meghalaya and 11 in Chhattisgarh would go to polls in a single phase on Thursday, polling will be held in 13 out of 40 seats in Bihar, 16 out of 80 in Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra 13 (48), Andhra Pradesh 22 (42), six in Jharkhand, Orissa 10 (21), Assam 3 (14), Arunachal Pradesh 2 (2), Manipur 1 (2) and Jammu and Kashmir 1 (6).

Elections for the lone seats in Andaman and Nicobar islands, Lakshadweep, Mizoram and Nagaland would also be held.

Assembly elections in Andhra Pradesh and Orissa will also be held simultaneously on Thursday.

The prominent leaders contesting in the first phase include Rashtriya Janata Dal’s Lalu Prasad Yadav, Telangana Rashtra Samiti’s K Chandrasekhar Rao, former Union Minister B Dattatreya, Bharatiya Janata Party’s Murli Manohar Joshi, Congress leader Renuka Chowdhury, NTR’s daughter D Purandeswari and actress Vijayasanthi.

The 15th Lok Sabha elections will take place in five phases on April 16, 22, 23, 30 and May 7 and 13 throughout the country.

The five phased polls will be held in Jammu and Kashmir and Uttar Pradesh while Bihar will have four-phased elections.

Maharashtra and West Bengal will witness three phased polls while Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa and Punjab will have elections in two phases.

Remaining 15 states and seven union territories will have one-day polling.

The counting of votes will take place on May 16.

The 543-member House will be constituted before June 2. (ANI)

Krishnam Raju, Murali Mohan in star fight for Rajahmundry

Hyderabad, April 4 (IANS) It will be a clash of stars in the Rajahmundry Lok Sabha constituency in coastal Andhra Pradesh as the Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) has fielded veteran actor U.V. Krishnam Raju against Telugu Desam Party’s (TDP) Murali Mohan.

It is expected to be an interesting three-cornered contest as the ruling Congress party’s U. Arun Kumar is seeking re-election.

Krishnam Raju, popularly known as the ‘rebel star’, recently quit the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and joined the PRP of actor-turned-politician Chiranjeevi. The former central minister’s name figures in the seventh list of candidates released by the PRP Friday night.

Though Krishnam Raju was keen to contest from either Kakinada or Narsapur, the constituencies he represented earlier, Chiranjeevi has pitted him against another actor of yesteryears Murali Mohan.

Krishnam Raju, who plunged into politics in the early 1990s, contested the 1991 Lok Sabha elections on a Congress ticket from Narsapur constituency, but lost.

He later joined BJP and got elected twice to Lok Sabha from Kakinada and Narsapur in the 1998 and 1999 elections respectively. He also served as minister of state for external affairs in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government from 2000 to 2004 but lost the 2004 elections from Narsapur.

Since then, he was keeping a low-profile and was unhappy with the style of functioning of the BJP. While joining the PRP a few days ago, he had said that he was impressed by the policies of megastar Chiranjeevi.

Krishnam Raju, who began his film career in 1966, was a popular actor in the 1970s and 1980s and has acted in over 180 films. He is the fourth film personality in Andhra Pradesh to join the race for this month’s Lok Sabha elections.

Popular actress Vijayshanti is contesting as the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) candidate from Medak while Chiranjeevi’s brother-in-law and film producer Allu Aravind is the PRP candidate from Ankapalli.

Though Murali Mohan, a contemporary of Krishnam Raju, has been an active leader in the TDP for many years, this is the first time that he is contesting an election.

Murali Mohan, who started his career in the early 1970s, acted in several films over the next one decade. He later turned a producer. After taking a break from active cinema, he joined TDP and became chairman of the Andhra Pradesh Film Development Corporation. He also started the construction company Jayabher Group, which built many residential projects in and around Hyderabad.

The two actors will be facing Arun Kumar, the sitting Congress MP who has been in the news for taking on media baron Ramoji Rao. However, he faces an uphill task this time as a section of the electorate in Rajahmundry feels that he has not done much for the constituency’s development.

The BJP, which won this seat in 1998 and 1999, has fielded its state general secretary Somu Veeraju but he is not considered a strong candidate.

TDP manifesto promises free colour TVs, cash for poor

Hyderabad, April 2 (IANS) Andhra Pradesh’s main opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP) Thursday released its election manifesto promising free colour televisions to the poor and cash doles of Rs.1,000 to Rs.2,000 per month for poor and middle-class families if the party is voted to power.

Releasing the 64-page manifesto at the party headquarters NTR Trust Bhavan, TDP chief N. Chandrababu Naidu said food, health and financial security for the people was his party’s goal.

The former chief minister said the TDP was committed to the welfare of all sections of the people, including farmers, backward classes and minorities.

Under the cash transfer scheme promised in the manifesto, each family in the poorest of the poor category will get Rs.2,000 every month, a poor family will get Rs.1,500 and a middle-class family Rs.1,000 through the banks.

Naidu termed it revolutionary and the first of its kind scheme in the country. He said the scheme, borrowed from some Latin American countries, would provide economic security to the poor and the middle-class families and meet their basic needs like food every month.

Referring to his promise of a colour television to every poor family, Naidu said: ‘The idea is to ensure that after a day’s hard work, people should relax by watching television.’

According to him, the sale of colour televisions through shops had already dropped after the TDP released highlights of the manifesto a few days ago.

The TDP president also launched the party’s election campaign at Medchal near here by addressing a public meeting.

Alleging that the Congress government was neck deep in corruption, he appealed to the people to bring the TDP back to power for an efficient and transparent administration.

Naidu, whose party lost power to the Congress party in 2004, will campaign non-stop over the next 13 days in the state that holds simultaneous assembly and Lok Sabha polls next month.

The TDP is contesting elections to the 294-member state assembly and the 42 Lok Sabha seats in alliance with the Telangana Rashtra Samiti, the Communist Party of India and the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M).

Congress will win Andhra elections: Reddy

Hyderabad, Mar 21 (ANI): Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy on Saturday expressed his confidence that Congress would win the coming elections in the state.

Addressing a press conference at the Congress Legislature Party office in Hyderabad, Reddy said, “There is absolutely no anti-incumbency against our government because we have taken up unprecedented development. At the same time, we implemented massive welfare measures which left people with no complaints whatsoever against the government.”

He informed that all major surveys conducted by reputed agencies in recent months have revealed that Congress is a favourite amongst the voters.

“It will be a positive vote for us and we will clinch the gold medal in the electoral race,” exclaimed Reddy.

He asserted that the credibility of his government in Andhra Pradesh has increased with the fulfillment of all promises made during the 2004 election campaigns.

Reddy said that the main opposition in the state, Telugu Desam Party (TDP) could not perform well which led to the birth of actor Chiranjeevi’s Praja Rajyam Party (PRP). Even if there is a certain amount of anti-incumbency, such votes will now be split between TDP and PRP, making it smoother for the Congress, he pointed out.

Criticising the grand alliance including Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS), Communist Party of India (CPI) and Communist Party of India- Marxist (CPI-M), Reddy said that there was no ideological cohesion among them.

“CPM is a major party in the Third Front. But it is grossly opposed to division of states. Then how will Telangana achieve statehood,” he said.

Reddy would start his election campaign on March 25 and end it on April 21.

The 2009 general election in Andhra Pradesh would happen in two phases. The first phase is scheduled on April 16 and the second on April 22 and 23. (ANI)

All Third Front leaders aspirant to occupy PM seat: Paswan

New Delhi, Mar 15 (ANI): Union Steel Minister and Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) Chief Ram Vilas Paswan on Sunday said that all the leaders in the Third Front were aspirants to occupy the chair of Prime Minister.

“An atmosphere is being created in the Third Front in the name of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) Chief and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati. If you look at the Third Front, all are candidates; nobody is a follower, all of them are leaders. No one is the Prime Ministerial candidate in the Front,” Paswan said while addressing a press conference here.

Meanwhile, in Bangalore, the Janata Dal- Secular (JD-S) leader and former Karnataka Chief Minister H. D. Kumaraswamy asserted that the outfit would not have any problem if Mayawati was selected as the Prime Ministerial candidate of the Front.

“Our national President has already expressed several times that if Mayawati is accepted as the prime ministerial candidate from other parties of the Front, our party will not have any problem to support her as a Prime Minister,” Kumaraswamy observed.

India will hold the general election between April 16 and May 13, in which 714 million people will be casting their votes.

On March 2, former Prime Minister and Janata Dal- Secular (JD-S) Chief H. D. Deve Gowda had announced the formation of a Third Front, an alliance of eight parties, including the Left.

The parties, supporting Deve Gowda are: Communist Party of India (CPI), Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPM), Forward Bloc, Republican Party of India (RPI), Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and Janata Dal Secular (JDS). (ANI)

Mayawati invites third front leaders for further discussions

Lucknow, Mar 13, (ANI): Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati today invited the third front leaders for further discussions on the issues related to the front in New Delhi on Sunday.

In a bid to revive the united front at the centre, leaders of several non-BJP, non-Congress parties launched a Third front with the aim of usurping power in Delhi.

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) General Secretary Satish Chandra Mishra has said that party is keen to project Mayawati as the newly formed Third Front’s Prime Ministerial candidate.

Sources claimed that Mayawati wants the Third Front to finalize the PM candidate by March 15, which also marks BSP founder Kanshi Ram’s birth anniversary.

She revealed her ambition soon after Third Front’s was launched.

It is believed that Mayawati, who was in two minds about joining the coalition, sent her second-in-command Mishra, to the launch a rally only after being assured of the top slot.

The new Front comprises the Communist Party of India (CPI), Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPM), Forward Bloc, Republican Party of India (RPI), Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and Janata Dal Secular (JDS).

Leaders of the new alliance said both the Congress-led UPA and the BJP-led NDA have failed to address people’s grievances and discounted suggestions that some regional parties are coming together on an opportunistic platform.

Meanwhile, talks are going on for seat sharing arrangement between Congress and NCP and BJP and Shiv Sena in Maharashtra. The Janata Dal (U) and BJP are still to finalise the seat sharing arrangement in Bihar. (ANI)

Third Front to be launched today in Karnataka

Bangalore, Mar 12 (ANI): The Third Front will be launched formally in Tumkur, 50 kilometers from Bangalore, today.

On March 2, former Prime Minister and Janata Dal (Secular) chief Deve Gowda had announced the formation of a Third Front, an alliance of eight parties, including the Left.

The parties, supporting Deve Gowda are: Communist Party of India (CPI), Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPM), Forward Bloc, Republican Party of India (RPI), Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and Janata Dal Secular (JDS).

The agenda of the new outfit will be unveiled at today’s rally.

Earlier, Gowda declared that the Naveen Patnaik-led Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has agreed to join the Third Front.

The BJD recently ended its 11-year-old alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Orissa.

Appreciating the response for the new political formation, the Third Front, Gowda said that it was “destined” to get good support from people and emerge as a “force to reckon with” after the Lok Sabha elections.

“Wait for political developments till April 16 (the day first phase of Lok Sabha polls would be held) as the country will witness a plethora of developments. Several leaders of the BJP have been leaving the party,” he said. (ANI)
