Akram is known to be close to prospect Knight Riders captain Sourav Ganguly and it is said that a good rapport between the two may seal the deal for Akram. (ANI)

Winning The Ashes would be the greatest feat of my career, says Flintoff

London, Aug.19 (ANI): England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff has said that winning The Ashes this summer would be the greatest feat of his career.

Recalling England’s epic 2005 Ashes triumph, Flintoff, who scored 402 runs, took 24 wickets and was named BBC Sports Personality of the Year, said the difference back then was England believed they would win.

Now, as they head in the Fifth Test decider at The Oval tomorrow, he says the team’s expectations are lower because of the change and turmoil in the ranks.

England has had two coaches and four captains since June last year.

“If we win this one, it will be a far greater achievement than 2005. Our win then was fantastic but the side had performed well over a period of time and beaten everyone in the world.

We played Australia expecting to win. I’m not saying we’re not expecting to do it this time but the side has changed a heck of a lot over the past 12 months,” The Sun quoted Flintoff, as saying.

England was then protecting a 2-1 lead, but this time they are locked at 1-1 and Australia only need a draw to retain the little urn.

It is England’s biggest must-win match for a generation.

“Now, I’m just pleased to be here with an opportunity to play on Thursday – it is going to be an unbelievably good game,” Flintoff said,

He is sure to be given a rousing send-off because there is no player who enjoys a closer rapport with the fans. They view him as one of their own – a big lad with talent who enjoys a beer and a night out. (ANI)

Christopher Nolan ‘reluctant’ to sign Batman 3

London, June 19 (ANI): British director Christopher Nolan may not make third Batman movie.

According to insiders in the industry, the helmer is “reluctant” to sign up for the next installment.

The news has come as a shock to actor Christian Bale, who has already signed for the next flick, reports The Daily Express.

The Prestige star, who shares a good rapport with Nolan, expressed his disappointment over the news, saying: “The fact is I have to do it, I’ve signed up, I’m in a bit of a fix if he says he doesn’t want to do it.”

A source said: “It will come as a real blow to Christian if Christopher won’t direct him on the next Batman film even if Christian is contractually obliged to do it.”

The film is scheduled for release in 2011. (ANI)

Gould, Hill join world’s elite umpires

Dubai, Mar.23 (ANI): The International Cricket Council (ICC) today announced that umpires Tony Hill and Ian Gould have been added to the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Umpires following the annual review and selection process.

An ICC press release said that the two umpires, who have been serving on the Emirates International Panel of ICC Umpires, have been elevated to the top level by the ICC Umpires Selection Panel made up of David Richardson, ICC’s General Manager – Cricket, ICC Chief Match Referee Ranjan Madugalle, ex-England player, coach and former first-class umpire David Lloyd and Srinivasaraghavan Venkataraghavan, the former India captain and international umpire.

With the imminent retirement of Steve Bucknor coupled with last year’s retirement of Darrell Hair the number on the elite panel will be back up to 12.

In addition, four other umpires from the Emirates International Panel of ICC Umpires – Marais Erasmus (South Africa), Rodney Tucker (Australia), Amish Saheba (India) and Nigel Llong (England and Wales) – have been identified for overseas appointments in addition to umpiring international fixtures taking place in their own countries.

“We are delighted to confirm the promotion of both Ian and Tony to the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Umpires,” said Richardson.

“Their promotions are a result of perseverance, hard work and commitment and I am sure these two umpires will serve as an inspiration to the other Emirates International Panel umpires who are striving hard to break into the top flight.

“Apart from their sound decision-making, we have been particularly impressed with Ian and Tony’s team-work and ability to handle pressure when they have been given opportunities to umpire Test and high-level ODI cricket.

“They both enjoy a good rapport with players and have earned a lot of respect in their international careers to date. We are confident they will be able to make the step up to the elite level,” he said.

Following the appointment, Gould said: “I am delighted to have been selected on to the elite panel. I believe that having played cricket at a high level for 21 years I understand the game from the players’ point of view and that I bring that empathy out in my umpiring. Although it’s a very different challenge to playing the game, being an umpire is enormously rewarding and a great way to stay involved.”

Hill added: “I am thrilled by this appointment. For me, umpiring is all about teamwork and so to be part of such a great team as the Emirates Elite Panel is huge for me. I am looking forward to continuing to work hard and repaying the faith the ICC has shown in me.”

Meanwhile in a separate appointment, former Zimbabwe Test batsman Andy Pycroft has been added to the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Match Referees bringing the total number of referees on the Elite Panel to seven.

ICC Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat said: “Andy is a real cricket man with a remarkably diverse background within the game. At the highest level, he has been a player, team manager, selector and broadcaster so that, coupled with his legal background, makes him an excellent addition to the elite referees’ panel.

Pycroft said: “I am fortunate that I have been involved in cricket for many years and in many different capacities. Whether as a player, coach, administrator or commentator I have always tried to be fair and respect the game. I am looking forward to this new challenge and I will be doing my very best to apply that range of skills effectively.” (ANI)

Facial features can reveal your personality

New York, Mar 16 (ANI): Facial features can reveal people’s personalities, says an expert.

Jean Harner, an expert in understanding facial features, said that one’s personality is written all over one’s face.

“Your face is a blueprint for who you really are inside,” the New York Daily quoted her as saying.

Haner, who has analysed the faces of the people like Alex Rodriguez, Bernard Madoff, Christine Quinn and US President Barack Obama, says that knowing what the other person’s face is telling can help establish rapport with him/her.

While analysing President Obama’s face, Harner revealed “it shows he’s highly independent and doesn’t do what other people want him to do.”

She also has some tips for young females looking out for their Mr. Right.

“If you want a sensitive guy who is emotionally available, go for a big mouth and full lips,” said Harner.

“If you want them to be spiritually sensitive, they’ll have a bony nose (and) sunken or hollowed cheeks,” she added.

Girls are also advised to stay away from boys, who have thinner upper lip than the lower one, for they may be ‘hedonistic’.

“It’s a sign they’re more hedonistic and have a tendency to be unfaithful. Maybe one woman isn’t going to be enough,” said Harner.

While eyebrows displays confidence, people with bigger ears are more comfortable at taking risks.

She also said that people who opt to erase their wrinkles with surgery could actually be doing a disservice.

“There are good wrinkles and bad wrinkles,” she said.

“We are supposed to get some, and if you erase them it’s not healthy, you might have to learn certain life lessons all over again,” she added. (ANI)

Why kids with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder move around a lot

Washington, Mar 10 (ANI): A new study has explained why children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder move around a lot – it helps them stay alert to complete challenging tasks. esearchers from University of Central Florida have discovered that children with ADHD need to move more to maintain the required level of alertness while performing tasks that challenge their working memory.

“We’ve known for years that children with ADHD are more active than their peers. What we haven’t known is why,” said psychology Professor Mark D. Rapport.

“They use movement to keep themselves alert.

“They have a hard time sitting still unless they’re in a highly stimulating environment where they don’t need to use much working memory,” he added.

During the study involving 8- to 12-year-old boys, those with and without ADHD sat relatively still while watching Star Wars and painting on a computer program.

While all of the children became more active when required to remember and manipulate computer-generated letters, numbers and shapes for a short time, kids with ADHD became significantly more active – moving their hands and feet and swivelling in their chairs.

The researchers suggest that parents and educators can use a variety of available methods and strategies to minimize working memory failures.

Providing written instructions, simplifying multi-step directions, and using poster checklists can help children with ADHD learn without overwhelming their working memories.

“When they are doing homework, let them fidget, stand up or chew um,” said Rapport

“Unless their behaviour is destructive, severely limiting their activity could be counterproductive,” he added.

The study appears in the Journal of Abnormal Child Psychology. (ANI)

Policemen stage a play to spread awareness against Maoists in Orissa

Sambalpur (Orissa), Feb 17 (ANI): Police in Orissa’s Sambalpur District staged a play to forge rapport with public and to spread awareness against the Maoists.

The play-depicted life of a villager, lured by the Maoists, leaving his village to join them. Tortured by them later, he wants to return to his village, but fails. The play seeks to strike a chord among the locals.

Police officials said that villagers were scared of Maoists as well as the police and thus suffered silently without complaining.

Police also realised that it was difficult to counter Maoists activities without the help of common man. District administration took this initiative to stage the play in Jujumura village, a Maoist infested area, to make villagers aware of the activities of Naxals.

Police administration has been running an anti-Maoist campaign in villages to help villagers shed their fear and hatred for police.

“We are running a campaign to revive good relationship between police and public. A wrong belief has been developed that the distance between common man and police has increased. We believe this is a wrong notion and it has to be eradicated. This is a part of anti-Naxal operation. We go from village-to-village and spread the message that police is with them,” said Pradeep Dash, a sub-inspector.

Residents also felt that such initiative from police administration would definitely help improve their relationship with the police and counter Maoists.

“Earlier, we were scared of police and used to think that relationship with police will cost a lot to us. But now, we know that police is there for our protection. This initiative will definitely strengthen our relationship with them,” said Harihar Mohapatra, a villager.

Maoists claim that they are fighting for the rights of poor farmers and landless, but do little to help them.

Daniel Radcliffe ‘flattered’ by gay fan following

Washington, Jan 28 (ANI): After wooing ladies and kids alike, Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe has now become a hit with his male fans.

And, the actor has said that he feels “flattered” when gay fans have a crush on him.

The actor, whose role in Equus has won him a large following in the gay community, has appeared naked onstage in both the West End and Broadway version of the musical.

And the 19-year-old has said that his male fan following has come as a welcome change from his hordes of screaming female fans.
“For a lot of straight guys – and I know I’m guilty of it sometimes – when you know a gay guy has a crush on you, it is the most flattering thing,” Contactmusic quoted him as telling the Daily Beast website.

However, the young actor shares a comfortable rapport with homosexual men, and has owed his showbusiness upbringing for teaching him tolerance towards other lifestyles.

He said: “My mum was a casting director and my dad was a literary agent and I was surrounded by gay men from a very young age.

“And I was the only boy in my class at school who had that kind of relationship with gay men. Most of my friends had parents who had proper jobs in banks and law firms so none of them had been exposed to homosexuality in the way I had – as a normal course of things. So they had a rather different attitude toward it than I.” (ANI)
