China targets illegal Internet bars

Beijing, May 29 (ANI): The Chinese Government has decided to target illegal Internet cafes as part of its four-month crackdown to stop teenagers from accessing harmful and violent content.

Internet bars located in rural areas, joint rural-urban areas, and locations surrounding middle and primary schools are the main targets of the campaign, the China daily reports.

“Illegal Internet bars are harming left-behind rural teenagers that lack parental care because their parents are away trying to make a living in cities,” the paper quoted Zhou Yongping, deputy director of the State Administration for Industry and Commerce, as saying in a national teleconference on Thursday.

The campaign will run from June 1 until September 30, with the participation of the administration, the ministries of public security, culture, and industry and information technology, as well as the civilization office of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China.

Zhou said local authorities would confiscate facilities and equipment belonging to illegal businesses, instead of simply punishing violators with fines. Those found violating laws would also face criminal punishment.

Tao Ran, a medical expert on Internet addiction at Beijing’s Military General Hospital, said illegal cafes lured many pupils and middle school students away from their studies.

They could access unhealthy content, including obscene and violent images and even information about gun sales and weapons, he said.

Tao welcomed the campaign but worried that it would only have an impact in the short term.

“The overall general public will be mobilized to participate in the campaign,” Zhou said.

The number of illegal Internet cafes is growing because of demand, the limited number of legal outlets, limited access to the Web and a lack of enforcement, Tao said.

Illegal Internet bars make large profits because they have much lower costs compared to registered outlets. Underground Internet bars also have poor quality computers, so even if they have many terminals the businesses are still cheaper to operate.

A national regulation released in 2004 requires the owners of registered Internet cafes to have a minimum of 1 million in the bank, 200 computers and an operating area of more than 300 sq m. (ANI)

At least 43 injured in Czech Republic train collision

At least 43 injured in Czech Republic train collision Prague – At least 43 passengers were injured Monday, three of them seriously, when two trains had a head-on collision in the north-eastern Czech Republic, the CTK news agency reported, citing medical officials.

The railways said in a statement that one of the drivers was likely at fault as he ran a red light instead of waiting for a train arriving from the opposite direction.

The train was moving at 40 kilometres per hour when it crashed into the second train, which slammed on the brakes and managed to come to a halt.

The damage is estimated at 7.5 million koruny (330,000 dollars), railway inspectors said. (dpa)

Renault and Williams unveil new Formula One cars

Renault and Williams unveil new Formula One cars Portimao, Portugal – Renault and Williams unveiled their cars for 2009 Formula One season at presentations in Portugal on Monday.

The cars were rolled out at the Algarve Motor Park circuit at Portimao where F1 teams begin testing this week ahead of the season beginning March 29 in Melbourne, Australia.

Two-time world champion Fernando Alonso and Nelson Piquet Jr were joined by team boss Flavio Briatore to present the R28 which Renault hopes will mount a stronger challenge for the championship.

The colour scheme is in a more striking yellow and white with the name of new sponsors Total on the front and rear wings of the R29.

Williams test driver Nico Huelkenberg, meanwhile, wheeled out the team’s FW31 in an interim dark blue livery.

Both cars will be testing alongside those of rival teams McLaren, who put its MP4-24 on the Portimao circuit on Saturday, and Toyota, who ran its TF109 for the first time at Portimao on Sunday.

Testing continues in Portugal until Thursday. In neighbouring Spain, BMW Sauber will launch its F1.09 in Valencia on Tuesday.

Ferrari was the first team to unveil its new car – the F60 – for the 2009 championship with a presentation on the internet a week ago.

Like other Formula One cars, both versions have wider front wings and higher and narrower rear wings in line with new aerodynamic regulations.

The R29 also features the shark fin engine cover that the team used for most of the 2008 season which ended promisingly with Alonso winning two of the last four races.

Williams have retained Germany’s Nico Rosberg and Japan’s Kazuki Nakajima as race drivers as it seeks to improve on a disappointing 2008 season.

The car is in a temporary winter testing livery, with the final 2009 colour scheme set to be presented next month. (dpa)

Chinese monk kills priest before committing suicide in Taiwan

Taipei – A Chinese monk visiting Taiwan with a Chinese Buddhist delegation has committed suicide after killing another member of the delegation, police said Wednesday.

The murder took place at the Forte Hotel in Hsinchu, western Taiwan, where the six-member delegation was staying, a duty officer from the Hsinchu Police Bureau told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa.

The delegation from the Ling Gu Temple in Nanjing, eastern China, arrived in Taiwan Monday for a six-day visit at the invitation of the Chuan Chuang Culture and Education Foundation.

They checked into the Forte Hotel Tuesday.

When foundation members arrived at the hotel about 8 am Wednesday to pick up the delegation for the day tour, they found priest Jing Ran, 38, lying in a pool of blood on his bed, while Quan Ru, a 53-year-old monk, had committed suicide by jumping from the rooftop of the 12-storey hotel, police said.

An initial investigation showed that Quan Ru had lost his entry permit and was chided by Jing Ran, triggering a quarrel.

Late Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning, Quan Ru broke into Jing Ran’s room and hit him on the head with a table lamp, before leaping from the rooftop.

“The monk killed the priest while the priest was sleeping. No one knew it until the Chuan Chuang Foundation people came to pick up the delegation shortly before 8 am,” the hotel’s press officer told dpa, asking not to be named.

In Quan Ru’s pocket, police found a note saying, “Call police to arrest me, then I can die in peace.”

Members of the Chinese delegation said Quan Ru had recently been promoted to become director of the Ling Gu Temple.

They said Quan Ru held a grudge against Jing Ran as he had often argued with him over how to run the temple. (dpa)

Two arrested over school shooting

Two arrested over school shootingBudapest – Hungarian police have arrested two men in connection with the fatal shooting of a headmaster and his deputy at a school in Budapest, Hungarian police announced on Thursday.

Hungary was shocked on Wednesday evening by reports that a masked gunman had opened fire at a special-needs school in Budapest, killing the headmaster and his deputy.

The school treasurer and a security guard were subsequently arrested and charged with murder, police said. The two men had been sacked the same day over an embezzlement affair.

The headmaster, Jozsef Takacs, 62, had arranged to meet the treasurer, named as 36-year-old Gabor D, at the school on Wednesday evening. They planned to discuss the technicalities of the treasurer’s dismissal.

Takacs took his deputy, Laszlo Papp, 32, with him. The treasurer turned up with the 52-year-old security guard Tamas K.

Papp had a dictaphone in his pocket to record the discussion. The police told the press on Thursday that the whole incident had been recorded, and two shots thirty seconds apart could be heard.

The security guard ran to a nearby greengrocer after the attack saying that a man wearing a mask had opened fire at the school.

The police said the security guard, who has a criminal record for fraud, was wounded during the incident.

He left a trail of blood to the room that had contained the missing server for the school’s CCTV system.

Tamas K admitted throwing the computer into the Danube river, but denied being in the room when the shots were fired. (dpa)

Government to get tough with petroleum strike

New Delhi, Jan 9 (ANI): The Government today said that it would deploy central forces to ensure that supply lines are not dried due to the ongoing strike.

The government also asked the striking PSU executives to withdraw their strike. They have struck work nationwide since Wednesday, demanding hike in their pay and perquisites.

The matter was discussed in the cabinet meeting where the situation rising following the strike was reviewed.

Petroleum Secretary R S Pandey told reporters the Government would deploy central forces wherever necessary. The striking employees cannot hold the country to ransom.

He added that 40 per cent BPCL employees have resumed work.

Petroleum Minister Murli Deora met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and briefed him about the matter.

Earlier, the meeting which took place between top officials of the oil companies and Deora in the early hours of morning was inconclusive as oil companies refused to step back on their demands.

“The talks have been inconclusive. The talks are going to take place further as well. There is no assurance. Only discussions are going on,” said Amit Kumar, President, Oil Sector Officers” Association.

As the strike entered its third day, its effects began to show in the serpentine queues at the petrol pumps across New Delhi.

Petrol pumps ran dry as frenzied people thronged the petrol pumps to get their vehicles filled.

”Dry Day” read the headline of one of the leading dailies, while photographs of petrol pumps showing signs of ”No Supply” and ”Out of Stock” flashed across the others.

For Delhiites, it was a nightmare as they stood outside the petrol pumps since wee hours of the morning.

“I”m coming from the airport, and was unable to get petrol anywhere on the way. I”ve been trying to get fuel since yesterday night,” said Pankaj Choudhary, a commuter.

The news of the strike continuing had created panic amongst the people since Thursday. Those who could not get fuel on Thursday, stood in queues since early hours on Friday to get their vehicles filled.

“I was in queue since seven in the evening and was able to get diesel worth only 200 rupees. My home is around 80 kilometers away from here and the fuel will not hold out for long. Now today again, I”m in queue since six in the morning, but I am still waiting for my turn,” said Rajan Singh, another commuter.

There were others also for whom the long wait at the petrol pumps proved quite nightmarish.

“My younger brother”s wife is very ill and we have to take her to hospital. It is an emergency, but instead we are standing here in queue for petrol,” said Jeevanlal, a resident.

About two-third of the 425 petrol pumps in New Delhi did not open because of lack of stocks and the few who did soon ran dry.

State-run firms dominate the country”s energy sector, controlling almost the entire supply of transport fuels, natural gas and domestic crude oil. (ANI)

Nicole Kidman ‘not proud’ of her performance in ‘Australia’

Sydney, Jan 09 (ANI): Hollywood actress Nicole Kidman has admitted that she is not proud of her performance in ‘Australia’, and was quite uncomfortable watching it.

The actress stated that she was very fidgety while watching the flick with her husband Keith Urban at the Sydney Premier.

“I can”t look at this movie and be proud of what I”ve done. I sat there, and I looked at Keith and went, ”Am I any good in this movie?” The Sydney Morning Herald quoted Kidman, as saying.

However, Kidman was all praises for her co-actor Hugh Jackman and Brandon Walters’ performances in the flick.

“But I thought Brandon Walters and Hugh Jackman were wonderful. It”s just impossible for me to connect to it emotionally at all,” Kidman said.

Its been reported that just after the premier of Australia was over, Kidman fled her native country, with her husband and daughter, as she was very nervous about her performance and the reviews.

“We ran because I didn”t want to read anything. I didn”t want to know. I saw my sister and my family and we saw Keith”s family and then we were straight on a plane,” Kidman told Australian radio station 2dayFM. (ANI)

Virgin Galactic denies reports of problems with space tourism project

London, Jan 9 (ANI): Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic company has denied claims that one of the craft in its space tourism project is suffering difficulties with its rudder.

Branson had unveiled the Virgin Galactic White Knight 2 craft to carry space tourists in California in July last year.

According to a report in the Telegraph, Flight International has reported that White Knight Two, the mother ship, ran into trouble when making a series of ariel maneuvers.

White Knight Two is being used to carry SpaceShipTwo, the rocket which will take passengers into space.

The journal cited an unnamed source as providing the information about the supposed difficulties during the test flight at the Mohave Desert in California.

It claimed that Peter Siebold, the test pilot, was unable to keep the aircraft on the runway.

But, this was denied by Will Whitehorn, Virgin Galactic’s president.

“There are no issues we know of at all at this stage which will affect the programme or the overall design. It is beyond ridiculous. There is no problem with the flight,” he said.

“It was a highly successful test flight and everything is going to plan,” he added, saying that the next test flight would take place in a fortnight.

“We will begin testing the Space Ship Two rocket planes in August and are optimistic that we will be flying into space with passengers by the end of the year,” Whitehorn further added.

Virgin Galactic expects to start commercial space flights next year, with passengers paying 150,000 pounds for the trip. (ANI)

Jeb Bush won”t run for the U.S. Senate

Washington, Jan.7 (ANI): US President George W Bush’s younger brother and former Florida Governor Jeb Bush has ruled out a bid for a Senate seat, saying that the time is not right for running for elective office.

Jeb Bush said that he would instead work from outside elected office to rebuild the Republican Party.

“While the opportunity to serve my state and country during these turbulent and dynamic times is compelling, now is not the right time to return to elected office,” Fox News quoted him, as saying.

President Bush, and his father, former President George H.W. Bush, both seemed to send signals encouraging him to make a run.

“I”d like to see him run. I”d like to see him be president someday,” the senior Mr. Bush told “Fox News Sunday” last weekend.

But the former governor said he wants to focus on education, including working to build “a system that lessens our populace”s dependence on government.”

In his statement, the former governor did not mention his brother, the current president, but did praise President-elect Barack Obama, saying he “ran a tremendous campaign and I am proud to call him my president.”

“I am confident Republicans will find productive ways to work together with the new administration to advance reforms both sides of the aisle can support,” he added.

Florida Republican Party Chairman Jim Greer said that although he was disappointed in Mr. Bush”s decision not to run for the Senate, the party would present a strong candidate in 2010.

While in office, Jeb Bush, 55, earned praise among conservatives for cutting taxes, trimming the state work force, pushing for school choice and moving to privatize many state services.

Analysts credit his popularity among moderates to the boost in test scores among minority students and his success in leading the Sunshine State through two hurricanes.

Since leaving office in 2007 after two terms, Bush has kept a relatively low public profile, writing an occasional column or giving interviews. (ANI)

Australia clings on to first place after win in Sydney

Dubai, Jan.7 (ANI): Australia has survived at the top of the Reliance Mobile ICC Test Championship table following its 103-run victory over South Africa in the third and final match of the series in Sydney.

But the pressure is still on Ricky Ponting’s team as the gap at the top has been closed to just five ratings points following the historic 2-1 series defeat.

It is the first time South Africa has won a Test series in Australia and it sets up a fascinating return series, the first Test of which gets underway on 26 February in Johannesburg. Any sort of victory in that three-match series will see the Proteas go top of the rankings.

As it was victory for Graeme Smith and his men in Sydney would have been enough to put them top but Australia dug deep in the final match of the series to keep the chasing pack at bay.

With India very much in the ascendency there are now just eight points separating first place from third with all three teams very much in contention for the right to be called the number-one Test side in the world.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka strengthened its hold on fourth place in the rankings following its 2-0 series win in Bangladesh.

After it had been pushed very hard in the first Test in Dhaka, Mahela Jayawardena’s team proved far too strong the second time around and finally ran out winners by 465 runs in Chittagong.

That win gave Sri Lanka another ratings point to put it within 10 of India and six ahead of England, which recently lost an away series 1-0 to India.

Pakistan is another three points further back in sixth place while the West Indies is still just ahead of New Zealand by a fraction of a point following the recent drawn series in the Land of the Long White Cloud.

Reliance Mobile ICC Test Championship (as of 7 January)

1 Australia 126

2 South Africa 121

3 India 118

4 Sri Lanka 109

5 England 103

6 Pakistan 100

Runaway horse stuns UK filmgoers bursting into local cinema

London, Jan 5 (ANI): Filmgoers in a UK cinema hall were taken a back when a rather unexpected guest joined them—a horse.

A stallion, which jumped the queue and burst into the local cinema, was one of three that had escaped from a farm.

The horse ran through the automatic doors at the Cineworld complex in Boldon, South Tyneside, and sprint down a corridor before turning round and fleeing through the exit.

Staff at the cinema hall was not allowed to talk about the incident, revealed a source.

“The horse was one of three which escaped from a farm quite a way from here,” the Sun quoted the source as saying.

“It was wandering around outside and a little girl frightened it by blowing a raspberry at it. The horse noticed the cinema and headed towards us, and when it got close, the automatic doors opened and in it came.

“It was a bit of a surprise – the general public don’t expect to see a horse in the middle of a cinema foyer – but it was all over in 20 seconds,” the source added.

While no one was hurt in the incident on December 19, the horse was soon captured safely.

A spokesman said: “It’s certainly the first time I have heard of this happening and I have worked in cinemas for six years.” (ANI)

ICC launches Cricket Hall of Fame in association with FICA

Dubai, Jan 2 (ANI): ICC Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat today announced the formation of the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame, in association with the Federation of International Cricketers’ Associations (FICA), as part of the ICC’s centenary year celebrations.

Speaking in Sydney on Friday at the launch of those celebrations, Lorgat said the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame would provide the chance for the game to recognise its greatest achievers.

“Given a key theme of the ICC’s centenary year is celebrating the game’s heritage then the foundation of the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame is an entirely logical step,” he said.

“It will provide a means of recognising the historical contribution of past players, officials and even institutions in making cricket what it is today, a great sport with a great spirit.

“The ICC has already worked with FICA through the LG ICC Awards and looks forward to this new collaboration which will help to ensure the success of this outstanding project,” added Lorgat.

The initial intake of inductees are the 55 players* named in the FICA Hall of Fame, which ran between 1999 and 2003, and their career statistics and biographies can be found at the new ICC centenary website, also launched today, at www.catchthespirit.com.

This will be supplemented by a select group of inductions each year, starting in 2009 when the newcomers will be announced during the LG ICC Awards ceremony.

The initial inductees (or, in the case of those who have passed away, their relatives) will be presented with a commemorative ICC Cricket Hall of Fame cap at an appropriate stage during the ICC centenary year.

And those living members of the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame will also have the chance to help choose new inductees, part of an inclusive selection process.

Lorgat said: “We have studied numerous halls of fame in other sports to see what works and what doesn’t and how best we can achieve our goal, to recognise the game’s greatest achievers.

“We want to ensure that as many of the game’s stakeholders as possible, including current ICC Cricket Hall of Famers and members of the public, get the chance to have their say in the process of choosing the game’s true legends,” he added.

FICA Chief Executive Tim May said that he was delighted that FICA and the ICC had agreed to invigorate the FICA Hall of Fame concept and enter a joint venture to launch a fresh Hall of Fame, to be known as the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame in association with FICA.

ICC Cricket Hall of Fame – initial inductees (55): Sydney Barnes, Bishan Bedi, Alec Bedser, Richie Benaud, Allan Border, Ian Botham, Geoffrey Boycott, Donald Bradman, Greg Chappell, Ian Chappell, Denis Compton, Colin Cowdrey, Kapil Dev, Sunil Gavaskar, Lance Gibbs, Graham Gooch, David Gower, WG Grace, Tom Graveney, Gordon Greenidge, Richard Hadlee, Walter Hammond, Neil Harvey, George Headley, Jack Hobbs, Michael Holding, Leonard Hutton, Rohan Kanhai, Imran Khan, Alan Knott, Jim Laker, Harold Larwood, Dennis Lillee, Ray Lindwall, Clive Lloyd, Hanif Mohammad, Rodney Marsh, Malcolm Marshall, Peter May, Javed Miandad, Keith Miller, Bill O’Reilly, Graeme Pollock, Wilfred Rhodes, Barry Richards, Vivian Richards, Andy Roberts, Garfield Sobers, Brian Statham, Fred Trueman, Derek Underwood, Clyde Walcott, Everton Weekes, Frank Woolley, Frank Worrell. Oil eating plants can help to clear up spills

London, Jan 2 (ANI): Scientists have suggested that oil spills could be cleaned up with the help of organisms that grow at the bottom of the world’s deepest lake in Siberia.

According to a report in the Telegraph, in this regards, a team of scientists is investigating how microbes ‘eat’ naturally occurring crude oil that seeps into the bottom of Lake Baikal in Siberia.

“Baikal has microbes that absorb this oil so it does not spread through the lake. This could have huge implications for environmental disasters,” said Dr Mikhail Grachyov, an expert on the flora and fauna of the 5,400ft-deep lake.

The scientists believe that the microbes convert the crude oil into methane and other by-products, but they do not yet understand how.

“It is important that we study these processes more thoroughly,” said Dr Grachyov.

Samples that were gathered in two mini-submarines will be analyzed over the coming years.

In 1996, hundreds of sea birds were killed along with fish and other marine wildlife when the Sea Empress oil tanker ran aground off the Pembrokeshire coast, spilling 72,000 tonnes of crude.

According to Dr David Santillo, senior scientist with the Greenpeace Research Laboratories at the University of Exeter, “Further investigation of these unusual microbial communities in Lake Baikal will be valuable.”

“However, while microbial action might help deal with some oil spills, we need to place far more emphasis on preventing such spills from happening in the first place,” he added. (ANI)

Internet addiction is now a clinical disorder

New Delhi: Feeling irritated because you can’t access the Internet? Well, may be it’s time to seek medical help as Internet addiction is now considered a clinical disorder rather than a bad habit, according to a new Internet Addiction Disorder (IAD) diagnostic manual approved over the weekend by psychologists.

The two major symptoms of IAD are lingering online for more than six hours a day instead of working or studying and having adverse reactions from not being able to get online, reports China Daily.

According to the manual, IAD sufferers usually engage in five main activities – Online gaming, net pornography, excessive involvement in virtual social networking, too much Internet shopping and general cyber-surfing.

Tao Ran, a leading medical professional on addiction in China who also headed the drafting of the manual, said that the guide would be the first of its kind in the world if the Ministry of Health officially approves it.

Tao said that the ministry is highly likely to give the manual the green light next year.

“If so, China will be the first country to recognize IAD as a clinical disease, like gambling or alcohol addiction,” Tao said. (ANI)

Swedish study: Pet dogs can help children hone reading skills

Stockholm – Children can polish their reading skills by practising to read aloud to their dogs, according to a new Swedish study.

Two Swedish students at a teacher’s training college presented the suggestion in a joint essay at the University of Skovde.

“A dog doesn’t judge and I can practice listening to my own voice and become more confident,” Rebecka Dirfeldt and Cecilia Persson on Monday told Swedish radio.

The two said they had put the method to practise after spotting an article about specially-trained dogs in the United States that were trained to sit still while children read to them.

The two college students asked a number of 8-year-olds who had a pet dog to practise reading aloud to their pet.

The overall result was favourable even though some dogs ran off and others fell asleep during the exercise, Persson told Swedish radio.

“Most enjoyed that someone sat still and listened,” she said, adding that when she and Dirfeldt start teaching they will encourage their students to read aloud to their dogs. (dpa)

Brit woman sues Bon Jovi for £250,000 after her run over at concert

Brit woman sues Bon Jovi for £250,000 after her run over at concertLondon, Hard rock band Bon Jovi has been sued for 250,000 pounds by a Brit woman, who claims that one of the group’s staff purposely ran a golf buggy over her at a concert.

Sally Allen, a security supervisor, alleged that she had tried to prevent Kevin McDonnell, from entering the back-stage area after a fire broke out at the Milton Keynes concert in 2006, reports the Telegraph.

She further claimed that McDonnell had said: “I don”t care about your emergency situation. Get out of my way, you f***ing whore. Do you know who I am? You can”t f***ing stop me.”

The 37-year-old added that McDonnell then purportedly ran the cart over her, leaving her with a fractured knee, ligament damage, and severe internal injuries.

Allen, who was hospitalised for almost a week and has been unable to work post incident, said that her injuries had devastated her sex life leaving her depressed, according to reports.

Meanwhile, the New Jersey based group has denied the allegation that the band had been unable to train or control McDonnell and added: “Mrs Allen”s claim concerns injuries she states occurred at a Bon Jovi show.

“None of the band members were present when she blocked the pathway of a crew member, nor were they aware of any disturbance at the time.” (ANI)
