We had to protect Kasab from policemens’ anger: Maharashtra ATS chief

Mumbai, May 3 (ANI): Maharashtra Anti Terrorism Squad (ATS) chief Rakesh Maria revealed on Monday that the ATS had to protect Kasab, the lone surviving terrorist arrested during 26/11 attacks, not only from public anger but also from anger within the force.

Maria, was Joint Commissioner (Crime) at the time of the terror strike.

He has supervised Kasab’s investigation, as well as security measures for the 26/11 trial.

Maria said the anger of the men in uniform had crossed its limit after the loss of many good officers.

“There was a lot of public anger… the department had lost some of the best officers (during the attack), so we had to protect Kasab from within the department because there was anger in department also,” Maria said.

The then ATS chief Hemant Karkare, Additional Commissioner Ashok Kamte and encounter specialist Inspector Vijay Saluskar were among those who lost their lives while on duty.

Today, the country is looking forward to the special court’s verdict.

The verdict is expected to be delivered around 2 p.m. (ANI)

Rakesh Maria likely to be appointed Maharashtra ATS chief

Mumbai, Mar 25 (ANI): Rakesh Maria, Mumbai”s Joint Police Commissioner of Crime is likely to be appointed as Maharashtra”s new Anti-Terror Squad (ATS) chief.

Maria replaces K P Raghuvanshi, as reports confirm that he made the mistake of going public with information critical to tracking down terror suspects in Pakistan.

Sources said Raghuvanshi has been asked to step down from his post following his fault of going public with regard to information on terror suspects.

Maria has been credited for solving the 1993 blast case and has been the face of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks probe.

Raghuvanshi”s second term as the Maharashtra ATS Chief was cut short with this transfer. He also has been facing criticism for the non-performance in the Pune Blast case. (ANI)

Nepal arrests kingpin of attack on Pashupatinath priests

Kathmndu, Sep 5 (ANI): The Nepal Government on Saturday arrested the Maoists leader who led the attacks on Indian priests and provided a personal security officer to the chief priest of the famous Pashupatinath shrine.

The Nepalese Government has also deployed an extra-armed platoon of security forces in and around the shrine.

In New Delhi, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson, Vishnu Prakash said: “The Nepal Government has told us that the ringleader of the attack has been arrested and policemen have been posted outside the temple. The head priest has also been given a personal security officer.”

Earlier in the day, speaking to the media in Bangalore, External Affairs Minister, S.M. Krishna reacted strongly to the attack on two Indian priests at the famous shrine in Kathmandu, and asked the Nepal Government to ensure safety and security of the priests.

Krishna also said, “India shares historical bond with Nepal. In Kashi the priests from Nepal perform the poojas and in Pashupatinath, the Indian priests. It is a tradition being followed for centuries.”

” The Maoist elements in that country are pressurizing the government and temple authorities against continuing the tradition,” Krishna added.

Meanwhile, the Indian Ambassador to Nepal, Rakesh Sood took the matter with Nepal Home Minister Bhim Bahadur Rawal and Culture Minister Sarat Singh Bhandari and registered strong protest against the attack on Saturday.

It was reported that, two priests -Girish Bhatt and Raghavendra Bhatt belonging to the Karnataka-were severely thrashed and their clothes and sacred thread cut by dozens of Maoists on Thursday in Kathmandu. The priests were badly injured in the attack.

The police and temple authorities with the help of the locals rescued the priests from the attackers, sources said. (ANI)

Bihar court issues warrant against Bal Thackeray

Bhojpur (Bihar), Sep 5 (ANI): A Sub divisional magistrate in Bhojpur in Bihar has issued a non-bailable arrest warrant (NBW) against Shiv Sena chief Balasaheb Thackeray on Friday for his alleged uncharitable and inflammatory remarks against the Biharis.

Thackeray has made these remarks in his one of articles in Shiv Sena’s mouthpiece ‘Samna.’

Judicial Magistrate Rakesh Pati Tiwari issued NBW against Thackeray, after the later failed to appear before him in compliance with his July 7 order.

Earlier on July 7, Judge Tiwari issued a bailable warrant against Thackeray, but Thackeray failed to comply the orders by presenting himself or by his lawyers before the court to explain the stand.

A senior advocate Rajesh Kumar Singh has filed the petition in the court in 2008 accusing Thackeray of making comments against Biharis in his party’s mouthpiece. (ANI)

Krishna asks Nepal to ensure safety of Indian priests

Bangalore, Sep 5 (ANI): Minister of External Affairs (MEA) S.M. Krishna on Saturday reacted strongly to the attack on two Indian priests of the famous Pashupatinath Temple in Kathmandu, and asked Nepal Government to ensure safety and security of the priests.

Speaking to reporters here, Krishna said “The Government of India is in touch with the Nepal Government and asked it to ensure security to the priests of Pashupatinath Temple.”

Krishna said that the authorities of the Pashupatinath Area Development Board informed him that, the Board has also put security cover in and around the temple premises and also provided security to the priests.

Krishna also said, “India shares historical bond with Nepal, in Kashi the priest from Nepal perform the poojas and in Pashupatinath it is the Indian priests. It is a tradition being followed from centuries.”

“The Maoist elements in that country are pressurizing the Nepalese Government and temple authorities against the continuing the tradition,” he added.

Meanwhile, in Kathmandu, taking a serious view of the incident, Indian Ambassador to Nepal Rakesh Sood took the matter with Nepal Home Minister Bhim Bahadur Rawal and Culture Minister Sarat Singh Bhandari on Saturday.

The Nepal Ministers have assured Sood that steps will be taken to ensure safety of the priests.

Earlier, it was reported that, two priests -Girish Bhatt and Raghavendra Bhatt belonging to the Karnataka-were severely thrashed and their clothes and sacred thread cut by dozens of Maoists on Thursday in Kathmandu. The priests were badly injured in the attack.

Major fire at a cotton godown in Jabalpur city

Jabalpur, Aug.8 (ANI): A major fire at a cotton godown on Saturday evening gutted property worth millions of rupees in Madhya Pradesh’s Jabalpur city. No casualty was reported in the incident.

The incident occurred at about 5.00 p.m in Basti Hanumatal, a crowded residential colony here.

Ten fire tenders were pressed into service to curb the fire. But the fire fighters had a hard time managing through narrow lanes to reach the cotton godown due to it being in a crowded place.

“After battling for almost two hours, we were able to control the fire and will be able to completely douse it in another half-an-hour,” Usman Khan, a fire official said.

Officials said the losses could run into millions of rupees.

“Losses can be estimated of around five million rupees…the accident took place in a residential area and moreover there were not enough equipment to douse the fire, and that was why the fire was raging. The fire had largely spread when the fire brigade reached,” added Khan.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known. By Rakesh Mishra (ANI)

India concerned about long-term solution for Koshi Dam breach

Kathmandu, July 13 (ANI): India’s Minister for Water Resource and Parliamentary Affairs Pawan Kumar Bansal has said India is concerned about the long-term solution for Koshi Dam breach.

Bansal who inspected the Koshi breach area in Sunsari and the reconstruction works at the dam on Sunday said India is serious about the problems caused by Koshi Dam and disclosed that the concerned authorities have been directed to take up all necessary measures including reconstruction works at the Koshi Dam.

“India is also ‘concerned’ about the high dam and the study on its possibility is underway,” he added.

Nepal’s Minister for Irrigation Bal Krishna Khand and Indian Ambassador Rakesh Sood also accompanied the inspection team, Nepalnews reported.

Tens of thousands of people had been displaced in Morang and Sunsari districts after the breach in the Koshi embankment triggered massive floods last year.

Koshi floods had also displaced Indians of Arariya, Supoul, Baguwan, Basanpur, Dumarwana, Dhurna and other parts of Bihar state that have come to Sunsari and Morang districts.

Under a treaty signed between India and Nepal in 1954, India assumed responsibility for constructing, operating and maintaining the Koshi project for the benefits of controlling floods in monsoon and receiving water for irrigation during winter. (ANI)

Biomarkers to predict brain tumour’s response to therapy identified

Washington, June 24 (ANI): A research team including an Indian origin scientist at Massachusetts General Hospital has found new biomarkers that may help in identifying patients with recurrent glioblastoma, or brain tumours.

It will help in predicting which patients would respond better to anti-vascular endothelial growth factor therapy, specifically cediranib, which is an investigational, oral agent that is administered once daily.

“We found that results from an advanced MRI scan taken just a day after starting treatment correlated with survival,” said lead researcher A. Gregory Sorensen, M.D., associate professor of radiology and health sciences and technology at Harvard Medical School, Massachusetts General Hospital.

“Combining MRI with blood biomarkers did an even better job of identifying patients who best responded to treatment.

“If this approach is validated in larger studies, we could use these tools to keep patients on therapies that their tumours respond to, and shift non-responders to other therapies much earlier,” Sorensen added.

Using a form of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) that looked at the mechanism of action of the agent, the researchers were able to determine, even as early as after a single dose of cediranib, those patients who benefited from the agent and those who did not.

“Vascular normalization is an important mechanism of how these drugs work in cancer patients,” said Dr Rakesh K. Jain, Andrew Werk Cook professor of tumor biology at Harvard Medical School and director of the Edwin L. Steele Laboratory for Tumor Biology in the department of radiation oncology at Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Centre, Boston.

“This is really a severe disease and being able to determine response at such an early point is helpful to tailor treatment,” he said.

“If we can predict those responding to antiangiogenic therapy early on, we may be able to define where the benefit would be,” he added.

The study appears in Cancer Research, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research. (ANI)

Gold and silver coins looted from Mumbai airport

Mumbai, 25 May (ANI): Four armed men looted packets containing 100 kg of gold and silver coins from Air India cargo terminal at Mumbai airport on Monday.

A security guard was injured during the incident and was rushed to a nearby hospital.

“It was a case of robbery. This is not related to terrorism,” said Rakesh Maria, Mumbai police official.

Security in and around the airport has been tightened after the firing and search is being carried out to nab the robbers. (ANI)

Ambani chopper sabotage case: 52 of Air Works’ non-technical workers off duty

Air Works has taken the attempted sabotage case of Anil Ambani’s Bell 412 helicopter – parked in the Air Works’ hangar for repair and maintenance – quite seriously. Till the time investigations do not reach their conclusive end, 52 of the non-technical workers of the company have been directed to stay off duty.

The company, which has a total of 200 employees, officials and managerial staff in Mumbai, has 62 non-technical helpers. Talking about the post-sabotage attempt proceedings, a company spokesperson said: “Air Works has “advised” 52 of its non-technical helper staff to remain off duty till the investigation is over.”

The proceedings result from a police case filed on Thursday by an Air Works official, who has alleged that ‘unknown persons’ had tried to sabotage Ambani’s chopper, in which stones were found in one of the fuel tanks.

However, the police officials are working on the suspicion that the sabotage attempt was the result of a dispute between the Air Works’ employees union and its management. The police visited the Mumbai airport to examine the spot where Ambani’s chopper was parked, and questioned four employees on Saturday.

Rakesh Maria, Joint Commissioner of Police, Crime Branch, said: “We are examining every possibility in the case and are ascertaining the facts. But no arrest has been made till now.”

Meet the ‘sari-tying’ Indian expert

Kuala Lumpur, Apr 25 (ANI): While most ladies take their time in tying their saris, Indian man Rakesh Nair has mastered the task of doing in it in a jiffy.

For Nair, 40, who has become a specialist at the task, tying a sari was something he learned during his stint in the movie industry in Chennai, at the AVM Studios, back in the 1990s.

“I was impressed with how the men at the studios dressed the actresses. They could tie saris in a jiffy,” the New Strait Times Online quoted him as saying.

“I learnt how to tie saris and often did it for the starlets, while the old studio hands were responsible for getting the leading ladies ready for the shoot,” he said.

Women are required to stand before him in their choli (blouse) and pavvadai (long slip) before he starts draping them with five metres of beautiful saris.

Though his job as a logistics manager keeps him busy in his office from Monday through Friday, he still ties saris at the weekend, and he is even booked for weddings, engagements, beauty pageants and dinners.

Most women go to him whenever they want to look their best, as he says if the sari is not tied properly, they end up looking clumsy.

Nair ties at least five or six saris for women each weekend and if he is working on a beauty pageant, the number can easily reach a dozen.

“The South Indian traditional style, the ones you see in Tamil movies, is favoured by many women here,” he said.

“Increasingly though, the younger ones prefer the Bollywood, Gujarati or even Bengali style,” he added. (ANI)

Court stays Delhi plan to turn marshland into housing site

New Delhi, April 20 (IANS) The Delhi High Court Monday stayed a state government plan to convert two water bodies into land for residential projects in Jahangirpuri here.

Hearing a petition filed by voluntary organisation Tapas, Justices Mukul Mudgal and Vipin Sanghi stayed the order of Chief Secretary Rakesh Mehta that said ‘the marshland in Jahangirpuri cannot be termed as a water body and the same shall be considered as per the land use plan of Master Plan Delhi 2021′.

The petition alleged that the state government wanted to convert one of the largest water bodies in north Delhi into a concrete jungle for residential purposes.

The state committee on water bodies headed by Mehta last year maintained that in the government’s revenue record nearly 100 of the 300 acre marshland in Jahangirpuri was ‘never a water body but ‘banjar kadim’ (land not fit for cultivation)’.

Taking exception, the court said, ‘The scope of authority vested in the chief secretary, as part of the nodal agency, is to make efforts for revival of water bodies. Prima facie, the scope of his authority did not include determining whether a particular water body exists or not.’

The court also issued a notice to the Delhi government to respond by the first week of May.

Army chief Katawal might be relieved: Nepal Finance Minister

Kathmandu, Apr 21 (ANI): Nepal Finance Minister Dr Baburam Bhattarai has said that the Chief of Army Staff General Rookmangud Katawal could be sacked if he fails to furnish clarification on some serious issues.

Dr Bhattarai said that if General Katawal failed to defend himself against charges of “grossly” defying government orders, he would be relieved of his command.

The Maoist-led government has already asked General Katawal to clarify the need for recruiting 3010 soldiers, reinstatement of the eight retired brigadier generals sans the approval of the Defence Ministry and boycotting the National Games on Tuesday.

On Monday, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal met President Dr. Ram Baran Yadav and informed him about the Defense Ministry’s decision to seek a clarification from General Katawal.

Dahal informed the President that the government has issued a 24-hour ultimatum to General Katawal to furnish a clarification saying that the army chief had disobeyed the government’s decision.

Dahal also briefed India’s Ambassador to Nepal, Rakesh Sood.

The Ministry has already sent a letter to General Katawal seeking a clarification from him, nepalnews reports.

General Katawal tenure will end in August this year. General Katawal will be replaced by Lt. General K B Khadka. (ANI)

India resumes Gorkha recruitment after two-year lull

Kathmandu, April 18 (IANS) After a lull of two years, India has resumed the recruitment of Nepalis for its Gorkha regiments after a full nod by the Maoist government that had in the past pledged to halt all hiring in the Indian and British armies.

Indian Ambassador to Nepal Rakesh Sood had met Nepal’s Maoist Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda earlier this year to discuss the recruitment issue.

After the former revolutionary leader assured the Indian envoy that his government would not stop the recruitment of Gorkhas – the hilly Nepali tribe famed for their courage and loyalty – the Indian Army set in motion recruitment processes in Dharan in eastern Nepal and Pokhara in central Nepal.

While the Indian Army, as a matter of policy, does not disclose how many men it recruits a year, there were over 13,000 applications. The initial two-month screening process ended last month.

Currently, there are about 27,000 Gorkhas in the Gorkha regiments of the Indian Army. The Assam Rifles, which in the past used to deploy Gorkhas as well, has now changed its recruitment procedures.

India halted recruitment in Nepal two years ago due to the political instability and doubts about the policy of the Maoists, who while campaigning for last year’s elections had pledged to stop the ‘shameful’ hiring of Nepalis as ‘mercenaries’ in foreign armies.

However, after the Maoists won the elections and came to power last August, the former guerrillas softened their stand and said the recruitments would continue till a conducive atmosphere and ample job opportunities were created in Nepal to retain its outgoing young workforce.

The tremendous response to the Indian Army’s call for soldiers is due to four primary reasons.

Unlike the British Army, which provides home leave once in three years, Nepalis serving in India across the border can return home in an hour to attend emergencies, weddings and other family reasons. They can also obtain good education for their children in India, which is difficult in Britain due to financial and other reasons.

The new pensions announced by India recently are extremely attractive. A Gorkha, who now retires as a captain in the Indian Army, would get Rs.14,000-15,000 (IRS) as pension, which is more than the money received by a major general in the Nepal Army.

But perhaps the biggest reason is that there is no discrimination in the Indian Army unlike in the British Army.

The pay, perks and pension are the same for Indians as well as Nepalis.

Indians in Nepal can’t be bothered to vote

Kathmandu, April 17 (IANS) They think nothing of hopping across the border to India to attend a wedding, obtain medical treatment or attend business conferences.

But tens of thousands of Indians living in Nepal can’t be bothered to make the journey home to cast their votes.

This year, as India embarked on a nearly month-long parliamentary polls from Thursday, there was a strong campaign in that country to get the inert voter to the polling booth.

However, the campaign has not trickled down to India’s northern neighbour Nepal; nor has a succession of Indian governments taken any steps to ensure Indians living in Nepal are able to cast their votes in the Himalayan republic itself.

Shiva Raj Singh Raghav, immediate past president of the Indian Citizens’ Association (ICA) in Nepal, estimates that there are about 300,000-400,000 Indians and people of Indian origin living in Nepal as long-term residents.

The 50-year-old, a hardware wholesaler from Uttar Pradesh, has himself been residing in Nepal for the last 25 years.

‘The ICA had petitioned the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu, asking for the government to enable the Indians registered with the embassy to cast their votes in Nepal,’ Raghav told IANS. ‘But the embassy expressed its inability to do so.’

In addition to the long-term Indian residents, Raghav estimates there are several thousands of Indians who come and go across the open border.

Indians living in Nepal include businessmen, professionals working for Indian organisations or joint ventures like banks, telecom and hydropower companies, embassy staffers, army personnel and teachers.

Prem Lashkari, founding president of the Nepal-India Friendship Society, says one reason for the inertia is that businessmen, whether they live in Nepal or India, prefer to stay away from politics.

His friend West Bengal lad Praksh Dugar, who owns a construction business in Nepal, is a prime example.

‘The last time I voted in my home constituency Murshidabad was eight years ago,’ says Dugar, who is now planning to return to his village Nabogram and take the plunge in politics. ‘I vote if I am home during the elections. But I have never gone home just to vote.’

Lashkari, a jeweller who has been living in Nepal since 1971, thinks the young generation could be different.

‘Now more and more young people are becoming active,’ he says. ‘They realise that businessmen too should have representatives in the government. We failed to press for postal votes or even a voting booth in Nepal. Maybe they would take up the issue one day.’

The Indian community in Nepal boasts of big names like Vikram Singh Deo, the former ruler of a principality in Rajasthan whose daughter Himani, wedded to Nepal’s former flamboyant crown prince Paras, was the crown princess of Nepal; Shalini and Rakesh Wadhwa, who head Nepal’s billion-rupee chain of casinos; and R. Saraf, who owns two of Kathmandu’s most elegant hotels, the Yak and Yeti and Hyatt.

Last year, the US government made arrangements so that Americans in Nepal could take part in their presidential elections.

Admakers Ask Hrithik To Reduce Waistline!

Here’s an example of strange things, which take place in the entertainment industry.

B-town’s favourite hero Hrithik Roshan, who you believed was perfect, was asked to lose the extra kilos for a commercial.

According to reports, the makers of clothing brand to be endorsed by Junior Roshan, wanted the actor to look more primed and best for an forthcoming ad, which is aimed at youth.

The ad makers plowed ahead and asked Hrithik to lose weight and even get rid of the brawny look that he’s sporting for his upcoming home production ‘Kites’.

The report also said that Rakesh Roshan was not in favor of his son losing any weight or muscle as he would have to start shooting for Sanjay Leela Bhansali film.

Rakesh also said that the lean look would not suit Hrithik’s role in Bhansali’s next.

A close friend of Hrithik said, “The brief given to Hrithik by the ad filmmakers was that they wanted him to sport a lean look. Being the perfectionist that he is, the actor was determined to work towards achieving his new look even though papa Rakesh Roshan wasn’t too happy with the fact that his son was going to shed his muscles.”

However, Hrithik decided to listen to his heart and the ad filmmaker and lost some weight.

Earlier, Hrithik had a 30-inch waistline, his waist is now 28 inches.

Now that’s called commitment. Hrithik sure has tons of it. No doubt he’s one of the biggies out here.

Hooch claims one more life, police crack whip on mafia

Another person died in Raghuvir Nagar on Wednesday taking raising the toll in the hooch tragedy to 17 even as the police cracked the whip on the spurious liquor mafia. The Delhi Police action comes after 34 hooch deaths in one month.

After the Dabri tragedy, the Crime Branch of the Delhi Police will now take over the Raghubir Nagar case as well. The latest victim, Naudhan (52), was a resident of B-1 block in Raghubir Nagar.

The Commissioner of Police has declared a reward of Rs 1 lakh to anyone who would help in unearthing the source of the spurious liquor racket and are conducting raids across the city. The South Delhi Police on Wednesday also arrested two people with large quantity of hooch.

Rakesh, a resident of Shastri Nagar, was held while he was ferrying hooch. The police also arrested a woman, Babita, and recovered spurious liquor from her house.

“We have recovered 12 cartons of Boney Scot liquor and nine cases of beer from both the raids. They will be booked under the excise laws,” said a senior police officer.

In Northeast Delhi, four alleged bootleggers were arrested and 63 litres of illicit liquor was recovered. Several other people were picked up for questioning.

The police have arrested Bhupender Gupta, Amit Kumar, Rakesh Sharma and Darshna in the case. One of the accused arrested belongs to the Sansi community, who the police claim are behind the hooch trade.

The Delhi government has also has ordered a magisterial enquiry headed by Ankita Mishra, Deputy Commissioner (Southwest) into the incident.

Court adjourns verdict on Tytler till April 28

New Delhi, Apr 9 (ANI): A Kakardooma Court on Thursday postponed the hearing on the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) plea for closing the 1984 anti-Sikh riots case against former Union Minister Jagdish Tytler.

The court will hear the arguments from both sides on April 28 and 29.

The court held that all evidence filed pertaining to the case needs to be analysed before taking a decision on the CBI’s final closure report.

During the hearing, the CBI argued that the court did not have the power to take a decision on the investigation done by the agency since the case was related to murder.

However, Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Rakesh Pandit overruled the CBI’s point and fixed the argument on the matter for a later date.

The court has also directed the investigating agency to hand it over the CDs containing the evidence in the case.

During the period of the court hearing, over 500 protesters from various Sikh organisations broke the barricades outside the court and climbed over gates.

The protesters, who were agitated over the CBI’s decision to give a clean chit to Tytler, demanded stringent punishment for him for his alleged role in instigating the riots pertaining to killing of three persons when a mob attacked Gurudwara Pulbangash on November 1, 1984.

They even burnt an effigy of Tytler outside the court premises.

Extra police forces were deployed at the court to maintain law and order.

The CBI, on April 2, had recommended quashing of FIR against Tytler as it did not have sufficient evidence to proceed on the matter. On March 28, the CBI filed the report in a sealed envelope before Metropolitan Magistrate Ram Lal Meena.

Tytler was among the three prominent leaders named in the reports on anti-Sikh riots. Two other leaders named were Sajjan Kumar and the late HKL Bhagat.

The 1984 anti-Sikh riots, which claimed the lives of almost 3000 Sikhs, were triggered by the assassination of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on October 31, 1984, by two of her Sikh bodyguards. (ANI)
