Cong fields Sharma from Rajasthan

New Delhi, June 5 — Commerce Minister Anand Sharma, whose Rajya Sabha term ended two months back, is being fielded for the Upper House from Rajasthan. Sharma had to get reelected within six months to continue as minister. As the Congress cannot get him reelected from his home state, Himachal Pradesh, Sharma is being shifted to Congress-ruled Rajasthan. The party also fielded Ask Ali Tak, a Muslim, and Narendra Budhiana, a Jat, for the other two seats in Rajasthan. The BJP fielded former Lok Sabha member V.B. Singh from the state.

“The party president has been authorised to decide the candidates for the second seat in Rajasthan, the third seat for Karnataka, one seat from Jharkhand and the third seat from Orissa in consultation with the state prabharis,” said BJP leader Ananth Kumar. This means that it will have to negotiate with the JMM. The names of Hema Malini, Najma Heptullah and Smriti Irani are doing the rounds for the second Rajasthan seat.

Sharma to file nomination tomorrow in Jaipur

New Delhi, Jun 6 (PTI) Union Commerce Minister Anand Sharma will be filing his nomination for the Rajya Sabha elections in Jaipur tomorrow. Sharma, who has been made the Congress nominee for the elections to the RS from Rajasthan, would be reaching Jaipur today for early filing of his nomination tomorrow.

Later, he will be proceeding to Turkey to attend an international conference on security. The Congress High Command yesterday ended suspense over his nomination by fielding him in the Rajya Sabha polls from Rajasthan, two months after the expiry of his term in the House.

57-year old Sharma, who hails from Himachal Pradesh, shifts to Rajasthan as his party was not in a position to get him re-elected from his home state, where BJP runs the government. His term expired on April 2 and since then there was speculation over fielding him from Haryana, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra.

Sharma”s shifting to Rajasthan resulted in dashing the hopes of former Union Minister Santosh Bagrodia who failed to get renomination. This will be Sharma”s third term in the Upper House.

BJP fields Jethmalani for Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan

New Delhi, June 6 (IANS) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Sunday decided to field former union minister Ram Jethmalani from Rajasthan and former MP Ajay Maru from Jharkhand in the Rajya Sabha elections.

A BJP statement said that party president Nitin Gadkari had nominated Jethmalani as the candidate for the second seat in Rajasthan and Maru as its nominee from Jharkhand for the biennial elections to the Rajya Sabha.

The party has already declared V.P. Singh as its candidate from Rajasthan.

Congress renominates Ambika Soni, Mohsina Kidwai for Rajya Sabha polls

New Delhi, June 4 (ANI): The Congress party has renominated Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni from Punjab and All India Congress Committee (AICC) General Secretary Mohsina Kidwai from Chhattisgarh for the biennial elections to the Rajya Sabha.

“Four other candidates renominated include Vijay Darda and Avinash Pandey from Maharashtra, EMS Natchiappan from Tamil Nadu and Dheeraj Prasad Sahu from Jharkhand,” an AICC release said on Friday.

Earlier on Thursday, Minister of State for Environment and Forests Jairam Ramesh was given a ticket to contest the Rajya Sabha elections from Andhra Pradesh.

The elections are being held for the 55 Rajya Sabha seats. The voting for 49 seats from 12 states will take place on June 17, while polling for six Andhra Pradesh seats will be held on June 14. (ANI)

DMK’s U-turn: post-dated RS seat offer to PMK

Having served the stick a year ago during Lok Sabha elections, the DMK has now decided to dangle the carrot for former ally PMK, offering a Rajya Sabha seat for former Union minister Anbumani Ramadoss, though not immediately.

Responding to the efforts by the PMK to come back aboard the alliance, the DMK high-level decision making committee resolved on Sunday that the estranged ally could be given a seat to the Upper House, though not this time. The term of six members, including Anbumani Ramadoss of the PMK, is expiring in June, and election to those seats will be conducted in three weeks. Party founder S Ramadoss had written a letter to Chief Minister and DMK president M Karunanidhi for support, as the party found itself in no position to get him re-elected. The DMK committee that met on Sunday decided to offer one Rajya Sabha seat when the vacancy arises next time – in the meantime, there is Assembly election and elections to the recently-revived Legislative Council in which the PMK is, thus, expected to support the alliance.

“I hope the PMK will accept the offer,” said Karunanidhi after announcing the decision of the party, while a resolution adopted by the meeting urged both sides to move on with the focus firmly on the future.

The party also announced its three candidates for the Rajya Sabha election – KP Ramalingam, S Thangavelu and TN Selvaganapathy – despite there being rumours that one seat could be gifted to Congress, who are now left with one assured seat and many leaders in contention.

Though it is not yet clear what stand would Ramadoss and his party take, the party does not have much options after hopping from alliance to alliance, calling itself the ‘winning element’ – a claim brought to ground by the DMK a year ago.

From the position of the ‘influential minority’, PMK’s clout was reduced considerably after the party failed to get elected even one of its seven LS candidates. Soon after the results were out, its relation with alliance leader AIADMK turned sour, and the major ally went back on its word – an assurance given while the pact was inked before the general elections – on supporting junior Ramadoss’ candidature.

The past one year saw the PMK gravitating towards the ruling party – supporting it inside and outside the Assembly, and more importantly, not criticising it and leading to speculation that it was only a matter of time before the party was accommodated back into the ruling alliance, even though there were reports that a section of DMK seniors was not fully in favour admitting the unpredictable ally back.

However, what was not expected was the post-dated offer that would force the PMK to support the DMK during the Assembly elections. According to political observers, this move would not only ensure better support from the numerically-strong Vanniyar community (whom the PMK claims to represent), it would also enable the DMK to play politics with Congress that has grown on to become more asserting in the absence of other heavyweight parties in the state alliance.

No merger with Congress in future: Chiranjeevi

New Delhi, May 29 (ANI): Telugu cine star and Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) President Chiranjeevi on Saturday ruled out any merger with the Congress party in the future.

“The Congress has asked PRP to withdraw from Rajya Sabha polls,” said Chiranjeevi after his meeting with Congress President Sonia Gandhi at 10, Janpath.

“The PRP has allied with Congress only for Rajya Sabha polls,” he added

The meeting gained significance after Congress MP and former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y. S. Rajshekhar Reddy’s son Y. S. Jaganmohan Reddy defied the party orders and decided to go ahead with his planned ‘Odarpu Yatra,’ which caused a lot of violence in the Telangana region.

The Praja Rajyam Party, which has 18 MLAs in the 295-member Andhra Pradesh Assembly, is keen on contesting the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections.

The actor-turned politician was asked by the Congress High Command to come here for discussions to reach an understanding on the biennial Rajya Sabha polls, after he announced that his party would contest the election. (ANI)

Munde’s nephew gets Council ticket

Mumbai, May 29 — Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Gopinath Munde has managed to get a poll ticket for a member of his family. His nephew, Dhananjay Munde was on Friday made an official candidate for the State Legislative Council polls to be held on June 10.

The BJP gave the second seat from its quota to ex-minister and ex-Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Shobhatai Fadnavis. The single Rajya Sabha seat will go to the party’s national treasurer, Piyush Goyal.

The BJP’s Parliamentary Board, which met in New Delhi on Friday, also announced the candidature of ex-youth wing president Suhas Pharande for the council polls from the graduates constituency. This poll will be held next month.

This will be the third political representation in the Munde family. Gopinath is the party’s deputy leader in the Lok Sabha and his elder daughter Pankaja won the 2009 Assembly elections for Parli in Marathwada.

When Munde didn’t get Dhananjay an Assembly ticket last year, he managed one for Madhusudan Kendre, the son-in-law of Munde’s elder brother. But Kendre lost the elections.

Jaya snubs SP, sides with Amar

New Delhi, May 28 — Actress-turned-politician Jaya Bachchan on Friday snubbed the Samajwadi Party (SP) by declining its offer for a Rajya Sabha seat, barely two days after the party appeared to have weaned her away from old friend, Amar Singh. A stunned SP leadership confirmed that Jaya informed them about her decision “to take a break from politics”, in a move being seen as a victory for Singh, who was expelled from the party in February. Top SP leaders, including party chief, Mulayam Singh Yadav, were at a loss of words to explain why the actress was nominated for the Upper House, given her close ties with Amar Singh. Asked by reporters in Lucknow whether Jaya’s husband, Amitabh could be behind her decision, a disappointed Yadav replied : “Amitabh Bachchan has never liked politics. He was elected for the Lok Sabha but after a brief period, he resigned from there.” Indications of SP having miscalculated the situation came in the form of Jaya’s silence following the announcement on Wednesday. Her renomination to Rajya Sabha was being seen as a reward by the party for not siding with Singh, after his expulsion. However, the Bachchan family’s decision not to desert their decades-old family friend Singh appeared to be a result of the meeting between Amitabh and Singh in Mumbai on Thursday. There were reports of relations being strained between the two recently, after Singh made his displeasure public on Jaya’s continuation in the SP.

Having lost out in this round, the SP hurriedly announced party spokesperson Mohan Singh’s name in Jaya’s place, a known Amar Singh baiter.

Jaya Bachchan declines SP offer for Rajya Sabha

Lucknow , May 28 — Caught between Samajwadi Party and expelled SP leader Amar Singh, the film actress-turned politician Jaya Bachchan, 62, on Friday declined the SP’s offer to re-nominate her for Rajya Sabha. The SP president Mulayam Singh Yadav said in Lucknow on Friday that the Jaya Bachchan had informed him that she wanted to stay away from the active politics for sometime. Yadav said that party spokesman Mohan Singh, who had lost 2009 Lok Sabha election from Deoria, had been nominated for the Upper House. Even though Amar Singh, a close friend of Bachchan family, had wished his “Bhabi” Jaya Bachchan well on her re-nomination, he certainly did not like the idea. Sources said that in order stop bickering in her family Jaya Bachchan declined the SP’s offer. Jaya’s present term in Upper House expires on July 4, 2010. Even though the SP’s Lok Sabha member from Rampur Jaya Prada had joined Amar Singh camp, Jaya Bachchan had been maintaining safe distance. Amar Singh had however expressed his displeasure over Jaya’s continuous association with SP. Amar Singh said that Jaya had been staying in a party, which had “humiliated” him. Jaya Bachchan had also not attended the Thakur rally organized by Amar Singh in Delhi in March last.

With depleted strength of the party in the state assembly the SP would be able to win just two seats. Apart from 87 MLAs, the party has support of few independent members. The SP thus would be able win two seats, as each candidate required 34 first preference votes.

Congress fields Dutt, Dalwai

Mumbai, May 29 — The Congress on Friday ended an impasse over its official nominees for the State Legislative Council elections. It has repeated one retiring member.

Two are new, one of them a woman. State unit general secretary Sanjay Dutt, who will complete his six-year term this month, has been given another chance.

A Muslim face and party spokesperson Hussain Dalwai and Pune’s ex-mayor Dipti Chaudhari also got Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s approval. The party has tried to please all sections of the voter base, as well as the numerous factions within the party.

Dutt is a loyalist who spends more time in organisational work. Ex-minister Dalwai moved to the Congress from the Samajwadi Party seven years ago, then worked as the party’s state vice-president.

Chaudhari is a close confidant of Pune Member of Parliament Suresh Kalmadi. She belongs to the Other Backward Class’s Mali caste, which, despite its larger presence in the region, has inadequate representation in the Congress’s Legislature benches.

The Congress leadership did not declare the name of the fourth seat that it wants to contest in the polls to be held on June 7. Candidates for the Rajya Sabha polls to be held on June 17 will be declared later.

The Congress is poised to contest two of the six RS seats that will be elected by State Legislative Assembly members, who will also vote in the Council polls.

Muslim leaders in favour of caste count

New Delhi, May 26 — A caste-based census could have a knock-on effect on demands of Muslims – from blanket reservation to their inclusion in the list of scheduled castes. Unable to reach a consensus, the government on Wednesday decided to set up a group of ministers to take a view on whether there should be a caste-based census. Most Muslim leaders in India are fighting for some form of quota for the community of 150 million, many of whom face varying degrees of disadvantages. That is why they also support a census based on caste. “The population of Muslims among other backward classes and Dalits is now enumerated on mere assumptions. A caste-based census will throw up absolute numbers for the first time,” said Ejaz Ali, a Rajya Sabha MP fighting for the inclusion of so-called Dalit Muslims in the list of scheduled castes. Although no caste system formally exists in Islam, three groups of Indian Muslims – ashraf, ajlaf and arzal – essentially function as such, each denoting a professional class. The ashrafs, said to be of Arab ancestry, are the so-called upper-class among Muslims, while the ajlafs tend to be considered as Hindus who converted to Islam to escape the caste system. The arzals compare with the lowest caste among Hindus. In March, former MP and diplomat Syed Shahabuddin, an ardent advocate of Muslim reservation, wrote to Law Minister Veerapa Moily, asking “instructions to the Registrar General of India /Census Commissioner to collect data on not only population of major religious groups but all social groups or sub-group”. “We need not call it caste census but Development Oriented Census of all Social Groups,” he said. Rajya Sabha MP Ali Anwar, who heads the All-India Pasmmada Muslim Mahaj, or the community of backward Muslims, wants more Muslim groups counted as OBCs and scheduled castes. His organisation wants Rajasthan’s Mew community – the Muslim counterpart of the Hindu Meena tribe – to be counted as a schedule tribe.

More demands will further strain India’s full-up quota system for disadvantaged groups, who will resist any move to reduce their share.

Jaya Ho, says SP for Amar snub

Lucknow, May 27 — The Samajwadi Party (SP) sprang a surprise on Wednesday by re-nominating actress-turned politician Jaya Bachchan for next month’s Rajya Sabha elections from UP. The move is likely to further alienate former SP leader Amar Singh, party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav’s one-time close aide. Singh was forced to leave the party, along with actress Jayaprada, in February. The announcement also reflects the changed equations between Singh and the Bach-chan family. Singh used to call himself the younger brother of Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya’s superstar husband. He often stated the Bachchans were like family to him. When Singh left the SP, it was widely speculated Jaya would also go with him. But she remained with the SP, raising eyebrows. Jaya did support her political mentor in the days before he finally left the SP, but distanced herself later. In March, at a rally of Thakurs in New Delhi, Singh criticised her for staying with the party. This widened the rift between him and the Bachchans further.

Masood’s nomination is aimed at placating Muslim voters, who had deserted the SP when Yadav cosied up to his bete noire and former BJP leader Kalyan Singh in the run up to the Lok Sabha polls.

SP rewards Jaya with RS nomination

In a rebuff to Amar Singh and in an attempt to refurbish its anti-woman image, the Samajwadi Party on Wednesday decided to nominate Jaya Bachchan for a second term in the Rajya Sabha. The election to fill 11 vacancies from UP is scheduled for June 17.

The SP chose Jaya over veterans like Brij Bhushan Tewari who, like her is retiring on July 4, and party spokesman Mohan Singh. Jaya Bachchan is the only woman MP of the SP and she had stood by the party when others like Lok Sabha member Jaya Prada preferred to side with Amar Singh in his spat with the party. Jaya Bachchan toed the party line in spite of Singh having brought her to the SP and the family’s good relations with him.

The SP also announced the RS candidature of Rasheed Masood, a veteran socialist. The SP can currently ensure the victory of only two candidates, even though as many as seven of the outgoing members belong to the party.

State SP president Akhilesh Yadav, while announcing the candidates, said, “Jaya Bachchan has been a dedicated worker of the party who contributed a lot in building the party and the party is happy in renominating her for a second term in the Rajya Sabha”.

Welcoming Jaya’s nomination Brij Bhushan Tewari said, “The party ticket is not a matter of right, its the sole discretion of the leadership of the party and we abide by it”. The Rajya Sabha members from UP retiring on July 4 are Kamal Akhtar, Nand KishoreYadav, Jaya Bachchan, Bhagwati Singh, Ram Narayan Sahu, Amir Alam Khan and Brij Bhushan Tewari (SP); Ambeth Rajan, Satish Chandra Mishra and Sri Ram Pal (BSP) and Arun Shourie of BJP.

Despite deadlock, Patil hopeful about passage of Women’s Reservation Bill

On Board Air India One, May 26 (ANI): Despite the deadlock in the Lok Sabha over the passage of the Women’s Reservation Bill, President Pratibha Devisingh Patil has said that she is hopeful about its passage.

Speaking to reporters enroute to Beijing on Wednesday, Patil said: “I wish that the Women’s Reservation Bill is passed in the Lok Sabha.”

Now, it is to be seen how the UPA Government, which has still four years in power, manages the requisite support for the passage of the Bill,” she added.

The Bill was passed in the Rajya Sabha with help of marshals who prevented some members of the opposition from disturbing the process.

Parliamentarians of the ruling party and the opposition, however, have said that they are against its forceful passage.

It has been more than a decade since the Bill was first introduce in Parliament (1996-97).

Last month, Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee presided over an all-party meeting to discuss the Bill, but failed to reach or arrive at a consensus on it.

Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad and Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav proved to be the main opponents of the Bill in its present form.

Lalu Prasad has demanded a quota for Muslim and Dalit women, and women of other backward castes.

At that time Lalu said he was grateful to the government for calling an all-party meeting on the issue, but reiterated his commitment to have Muslim, backward and Dalit women included in the ambit of the Bill

“Our stand has not changed,” Lalu said then

After the meetiing, Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee said the Bill would look after the interests of the minorities.

Janata Dal (United) President Sharad Yadav also demanded a quota within a quota.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has supported the bill.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi is demanding that the Bill be passed in its present form.

The Rajya Sabha had last month passed a Constitution Amendment Bill that provides for 33 per cent reservation of women in Parliament and state assemblies.

President Patil is visiting China from May 26-31 and will hold discussions with the Chinese leadership.

Commenting on her visit, which coincides with the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between India and China, President Patil said her visit is part of the process of high-level contacts between the two countries.

President Patil said that Chinese President Hu Jintao’s state visit to India in 2006 had generated a great deal of goodwill between the two countries, and added, that during the visit of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to China in 2008, the two countries concluded a “Shared Vision for the 21st Century” which forms the basis for bilateral cooperation on global issues.

She also said that India and China are two large and populous countries and both of them are focussed on enhancing economic growth and social progress, so there are many areas in which the two countries can exchange views and learn from each other”s experiences. (ANI)

Samajwadi Party re-nominates outgoing member Jaya Bachchan for Rajya Sabha

Lucknow, May 26 (ANI): The Samajwadi Party (SP) on Wednesday decided to re-nominate outgoing member and film actress Jaya Bachchan in the biennial elections to the Rajya Sabha.

The decision came as a surprise, as Bachchan is considered close to former party general secretary Amar Singh who was dismissed in February.

Bachchan’s election is slated take place on June 10.

The party’s parliamentary board met here and also decided to field former Union Minister Rashid Masood.

Currently, the Samajwadi Party has 11 members in the Rajya Sabha.

For the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council, the party would field three candidates–Balram Yadav, Ram Sunder Das Nishad and Ram Naresh Yadav.

Among the 13 council members, the party had five. (ANI)

Sonia Gandhi to decide on my renomination to Rajya Sabha: Anand Sharma

New Delhi, May 19 (ANI): Union Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma on Wednesday said that Congress President Sonia Gandhi would take a decision on his renomination to the Rajya Sabha.

“This is the prerogative of the Congress President. Whatever is the decision in this matter, it has to be taken by her and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh,” said Sharma.

Sharma, whose Rajya Sabha term came to an end in April, has to be re-elected as a Member of Parliament by October.

It has been reported that Sharma could be nominated from Haryana, as the party has no strength to elect even a single member to the Rajya Sabha from his native state Himachal Pradesh.

“I have approached my responsibility acknowledging the confidence imposed in me” by the Congress President and the Prime Minister,” said Sharma. (ANI)

Lyricist Javed Akhtar gets e-mail threat for criticizing Deoband fatwa

Mumbai, May 15 (ANI): Lyricist and Rajya Sabha member Javed Akhtar on Saturday lodged a case with the Mumbai Police after he received a e-mail threat for criticizing a fatwa banning women working with men.

In the complaint, Akhtar said that he received an email in which it was stated that the countdown to his end has begun.

The email also dared Akhtar to try to save himself if he could.

On Tuesday, the Darul Uloom Deoband, in a Talibanesque fatwa, decreed that it is “haram” and illegal according to the Sharia for a family to accept a woman”s earnings.

Clerics at the largest Sunni Muslim seminary after Cairo”s Al-Azhar said the decree flowed from the fact that the Sharia prohibited proximity of men and women at the workplace.

The e-mail taunted Akhtar, claiming he is a Muslim only in name and is actually a Jewish agent.

Reportedly, the e-mail signed by Aneesul Islam, accuses Akhtar of hurting Muslim sentiments with his comments.

The email said Akhtar could ignore the Ulema”s orders if he wished, but he should not have said the fatwa was irrelevant.

The threat to Akhtar comes on the heels of a group of clerics criticizing his anti-fatwa comments.

The clerics said that since Akhtar was not an authority on Islam, he should not comment on Islamic affairs.

Akhtar had opposed the Darul Uloom Deoband”s fatwa that asked them not to work with men and apparently described muftis as insane. (ANI)

CPI-M seeks apology from Trinamool over unparliamentarily language against its leader

New Delhi, May 5 (ANI): The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) on Wednesday sought an apology from the opposition Trinamool Congress over the alleged derogatory remarks made by its leader Sudip Bandyopadhyay against CPI-M leader Basudeb Acharia inside the Parliament.

“From the very beginning we have seen whenever we try to say anything inside the House, immediately all the Trinamool members shout, and interrupt, disturb so they are doing this thing from very beginning,” said CPI-M leader Basudeb Acharia.

“Strategy, we will ask, request the Speaker to ask him to apologise,” he added.

Meanwhile, CPI-M State Secretary Biman Bose said the Parliament should deal with the matter.

“Actually this issue has to be dealt with by the parliament and the custodian, they are to look after the issue seriously,” said Bose.

Controversial remarks disrupted Parliament on Wednesday leading to adjournments of each of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, with an angry opposition seeking an apology.

Bandyopadhyay is in the eye of a storm for his remarks against Acharia inside the Parliament on Tuesday in the backdrop of the motormen”s strike in Mumbai . (ANI)

Anganwadi workers stage a protest in New Delhi

New Delhi, May 4 (ANI): Hundreds of village-level Anganwadi (rural community-level crèche) workers from various parts of India staged a protest march and later a demonstration in New Delhi on Tuesday.

This rally demanding higher wages, job security and status of government servants with privileges of pension and allied retirement benefits for the Anganwadi workers, was held under the banner of All India Federation of Anganwadi Workers and Helpers, which is affiliated to CITU (Centre of Indian Trade Unions), the labour wing of Communist Party of India-Marxist).

They said that their wages were far below the minimum wages fixed by the government for unskilled labourers and not sufficient even for subsistence.

“Our first demand is that the Anganwadi women should be treated as employees. The government addresses them as social workers and gives them only 1500 rupees as salary. At least they should be given a proper salary with which they can at least survive. The government has said there is price rise, so they should get the salary according to that,” said M K Pandhe, CPM Politburo member.

“The standard of living is very low, when they retire they don”t get any provident fund, they don”t get any social security, they security for home, which is very wrong. When we go to the government, they say that something will be done but they don”t do anything,” he added.

“Our main demand is that the Anganwadi women whom the government doesn”t even consider as employees and gives them very less money. A worker only gets 1500 rupees and helper gets only 750 rupees a month. So our demand is that the Anganwadi women or the helper should get at least the basic salary,” said Hemlata, General Secretary of All India Federation of Anganwadi Workers and Helpers.

“This recommendation has been made by the Parliament”s Rajya Sabha petition Committee, which says that the Anganwadi workers should get the basic salary,” she added.

She also mentioned that they would put forth their demands to Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh.

Anganwadi workers play a crucial role in providing childcare in rural India. They are trained in various aspects of childcare, health and nutrition.

Apart from routine tasks, the Anganwadi workers are also engaged in various other government schemes such as pre-school and health education, maintenance of records of births and deaths, administration of pulse-polio drops, and provision of supplementary nutrition to pregnant and lactating mothers and children up to the age of six.

There are around 1.5 million women workers engaged in the Anganwadi projects across the country. (ANI)
