‘CBI fabricated our statements’

Mumbai, June 6 — The trial in the murder of the president of the Jalgaon District Congress Committee, Vishram Patil, has taken a new turn. Some of the witnesses, including a prosecution (panch) witness, have filed affidavits alleging that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) fabricated their statements attached to the CBI’s additional chargesheet filed on June 10, 2006.

Vishram was murdered on September 21, 2005. Political rivalry between him and party colleague, G.N. Patil, President Pratibha Patil’s brother, and another party member, Ulhas Patil, was suspected to be the reason for the murder.

Vishram’s widow, Rajni Patil, had moved the high court and the Supreme Court to make G.N. Patil an accused in the murder. An affidavit filed by Rekha Mali (wife of accused Raju Mali, who died in custody in 2007) alleged that the CBI and police fabricated her statement.

“CBI officers visit me and threaten me and my relatives. They ask me to give my statement according to what they say.

If anything happens to me, the CBI should be held responsible,” Rekha’s affidavit said. A senior CBI official confirmed these affidavits were filed.

“We will follow the process of law and file a reply if the court asks us to,” the officer said. The affidavit of Kishor Shah, one of the witnesses, said the police had approached him to be a panch witness.

“The police threatened me saying if I didn’t help them they would make me an accused in the case,” Shah’s affidavit said. Raju’s brother, Sanju, said the CBI had attached his statement with the chargesheet without recording it.

Rekha’s affidavit also said her husband had connections with politicians but nobody helped her. She claimed she had gone to meet G.N. Patil who asked her to return after 90 days.

Violence rocks Telangana

Hyderabad, May 28 — Congress MP Jaganmohan Reddy was arrested on Friday afternoon after his much-hyped Odarapu yatra (consoling tour) led to violence in Telangana districts including Andhra capital, Hyderabad, in which one person was reportedly killed and twelve injured. Jagan, who is the only son of former chief minister, the late Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy, and an aspirant for the CM’s post, was taken into custody by a large team of policemen from the coach of the Intercity Express train at Vangapalli station in Nalgonda district and brought back to Hyderabad. Later, he was released on bail. The MP who defied the party high command directive and went ahead with the trip seems to have antagonised not only politicians of all hues in Telangana but even a large section within the Congress party. Some party MLAs including former minister R. Damodar Reddy have demanded that Jagan be expelled from the party. “He clearly violated the party discipline and it appears he has decided to fight with the high command,” Damodar said. “His stubborn attitude has led to the death of one Telangana activist and large-scale violence in Warangal.” Earlier in the day, the railway station at Mahbubabad, 200 km from Hyderabad in Hyderabad-Vijayawada trunk route, where Jagan was to arrive to a planned grand welcome, witnessed battles involving Telangana activists and his supporters. Shouting slogans of “Jaya Telangana” and “Jagan go back”, they pelted stones at the followers of Jagan, who retaliated in a similar manner. Two local MLAs, Konda Surekha and M. Kavitha, who were present to receive Jagan were not spared. The guards of the two legislators escorted them out while firing at the crowd, reportedly killing a student, Praful Raju (20).

However, Moily refused to comment on the issue, only saying it will be handled as a law and order problem by the state government.

Besides, over 50 public and over 150 private properties were also badly burnt or damaged in the second round of “protests” in Telangana so far.

According to Transport Minister S Vijayarama Raju, APSRTC suffered a loss of over Rs 110 crore since November 29.

“These are only bare estimates as the destructions are still continuing in Telangana region,” a top ranking bureaucrat said.

The protesters also targeted railway properties causing a loss of several crores of rupees due to burning of four railway stations and other damages at various places in all the three regions of Andhra Pradesh.

The protesters damaged railway signalling panels and equipments besides burning two bogies and pelting stones on two Express trains.

“Apart from attacks on railway properties in view of bandhs, rail rokos and demonstrations, railways are also losing particularly due to non-transportation of goods and parcel which are lying at different railway stations,” a senior official of the South Central Railway (SCR) said.

The protesters did not spare telephone exchanges, cell phone towers. They also set fire to optical fibre cables at a BSNL warehouse in Anantapur causing over Rs 30 lakh loss. The number of persons who ended their lives demanding

India strengthens economic ties with China but still wary on security front

Kolkata, Aug 26 (ANI): Minister of State for Defence Pallam Raju has said that while India is strengthening its economic ties with China, it will not downplay any sort of possible threat perception.

Talking to reporters here on Tuesday, Raju said, “There has not been any violation or there have not been any skirmishes. You must appreciate that. And at the same time our economic relationship is building up, which is taking the focus away from a non-issue like this,”Earlier this month, India and China had held the thirteenth round of talks to resolve their long simmering border dispute in New Delhi.

India’s National Security Adviser M K Narayanan and Chinese State Councillor Dai Bingguo resumed the talks after a year’s gap, focusing on narrowing down differences along their Himalayan border.

The two sides reportedly discussed the language of partnership, highlighted by a burgeoning trade and a common position on climate change and global trade talks.

China has emerged as India’s largest trading partner, replacing US in 2008-09.

The bilateral trade engagement between India and China stood at nearly 36 billion dollars in April to February 2008-09, an increase of nearly seven percent in the year ago period.

Pallam Raju calls upon private industry to participate in defence sector

New Delhi, Aug 20(ANI): Minister of State for Defence MM Pallam Raju on Thursday called upon the private industry in IT and Engineering Design for meeting the needs of the Defence Forces.

Inaugurating a two-day seminar on ‘Emerging Technologies for Sub-Conventional Conflict and Homeland Security’, Raju said the Government plans to meet upto 70 per cent of India’s Defence purchases from indigenous sources.

“The terrorists, militants and insurgents are acquiring advanced weapons and communication equipment. Their methods of warfare are becoming more sophisticated, more complex and more systematically planned. Their objectives are becoming more ambitious, with the intention of inflicting maximum damage,” Raju said.

“Therefore, the task ahead is formidable. Our defence forces and paramilitary forces need to be further equipped, adequately trained and properly supported. Armaments and munitions, state-of-the-art equipment, and support systems in telecommunications, surveillance and other areas should be proportionate to the threat perception,” he added.

Raju further said that in order to counter the growing threat, India needs to work on a number of fronts simultaneously.

“Leveraging emerging technologies is one of the critical aspects in this area. The world has made rapid strides in technology development in conducting warfare as well as in communications and transport,” Raju said.

“India has evident capacities in information technology and engineering design in the private sector, through which it has been able to successfully capture the space of outsourcing and software services,” he added.

He also informed that the country would spend around 10 billion dollars in the next seven years on homeland security alone.

“Internal security is a matter that is engaging us very closely and is high on our priority agenda. After the horrific attacks on Mumbai last November which killed 173 people, we have taken up the challenge to modernize and upgrade our security forces in a comprehensive manner,” Raju said. (ANI)

Instant shutdown hits tourism in Darjeeling

Sukuna (Darjeeling), July 12 (ANI): Tourists visiting Darjeeling are being forced to return to the plains following strike call given by the Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM).

The shutdown is in operation till Monday noon in protest against the violence at Panighata near Kurseong.

Activists and supporters of the GJM clashed with their Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF) rivals.

The GJM has sought immediate remedial action by the police and issued an ultimatum that their grievances be redressed, failing which an indefinite strike will be called in the hill district of Darjeeling.

With all shops and other establishments downing their shutters, tourists have packed up and rushed to other resorts.

For example, Sukna in the foothills, is attracting a rush of tourists.

“We were planning to stay for more than a week ( in Darjeeling) and had booked a hotel for almost ten days. But because of the strike, I thought there would be no arrangements of vehicle or food. So, we left the place,” said Laxman Adhikary, a tourist from Kolkata.

Earlier, GJM supporters had staged a sit-in-strike before a police station at Panighata and demanded the arrest of Rajen Mukhia, a GNLF leader.

Meanwhile, some GNLF supporters also appeared on the scene, forcing the police to step in to bring the situation under control. A mild baton charge was resorted to.

Police arrested nine GJMM supporters, but Mukhia was not nabbed.

This prompted the GJM leadership to summon a meeting of the central committee where it was decided to go for an indefinite strike if Mukhia was not arrested by July 13.

“We demand from the government the immediate arrest of Mukhia,” said Raju Subba, the information and cultural secretary, GJM.

It may be recalled that the Central Government, the West Bengal Government and the GNLF under the leadership of Subhas Gheising, signed an agreement in 1988, paving the way for the setting up of the Autonomous Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council (ADGHC). (ANI)

Tech Mahindra to complete Satyam’s 75-mn dollars Australian project

Melbourne, July 1 (ANI): Tech Mahindra, the new owner of troubled Indian IT services firm Satyam, has for the first time confirmed its continued commitment to a 75 million dollars software development project in Geelong, Australia.

There were grave concerns that the project would be axed after Satyam Computer Services founder and chairman, B. Ramalinga Raju, admitted to a one billion dollar accounting fraud in January.

Tech Mahindra executive vice-chairman Vineet Nayyar said construction of the 10ha development on Deakin University grounds would begin as soon as discussions with the Victorian government were complete and the company is determined to complete the project.

However, he warned that certain aspects of the initial agreement, including funding, could change.

“We’re committed to the project … we’ve got due diligence in place,” said Nayyar, who is currently visiting Australia.

“The goal is to complete the project but we need to investigate how much investment is needed,” The Australian quoted him, as saying.

The Geelong project was announced more than a year ago with Satyam as its main financial backer in partnership with the Victorian state government, the City of Greater Geelong and Deakin.

The software hub promises to create 2000 jobs, a much-needed boost for the region in the wake of industry retrenchments. (ANI)

Karnataka silk weavers fret over falling profits due to globalisation

Doddaballapura (Karnataka), June 27 (ANI): Silk weavers in Karnataka lament over falling profits due to globalization and liberalisation policies.

It has affected silk weavers in Doddaballapura, 90 kilometres from the state capital Karnataka. The silk produced here is considered as one of the best in the country.

The city is credited with producing pure silk, art silk, china silk, soft silk, handloom silk and many more.

But, once flourishing silk business is severely affected now. Many loom owners complain that they are not fetching profits due to combined effect of liberalisation and globalisation policies.

“This industry was in a good condition a decade ago. This industry was forced into trouble due to the globalisation and liberalisation policy. Because of the policies of LPG (liberalisation, privatisation and globalisation), the home industries and small scale industries, which include weaving as well, could not compete with the big and large scale Industries,” said Hemanth Raju, Weavers Association President.

Earlier, there were 25-30 thousand handloom units in Doddaballapura alone but now they have been reduced to 8-10 thousand.

The other reason causing worry to the weavers is low demand of genuine silk in the market due to its high cost price.

India’s 40 per cent of silk is supplied from Doddaballapura alone and more than one lakh people are dependent on the silk industry. The city produces one lakh sarees every week and these are supplied to almost every part of the country. By Shweta(ANI)

Satyam Australia chief quits

Melbourne, May 27 (ANI): The E head of Satyam Computer Services in Australia, Deepak Nangia, has resigned.

Nangia told The Australian he left the company around three weeks ago to pursue other opportunities.

During his seven-year tenure, Nangia built Satyam Australia into a 200 million dollar company, securing blue chip clients such as Telstra, National Australia Bank and Qantas.

However, the actions of Satyam founder and chairman B. Ramalinga Raju, who admitted to over-inflating the value of the company’s cash and bank balances by more than one billion American dollars hurt its reputation and bottom line.

A Satyam spokeswoman said Nangia’s successor will be named soon.

Like many of his counterparts in other countries, Nangia has been battling to retain Satyam’s clientele.

However some clients, including Telstra and NAB, have either decided to cut all ties or reduce their engagement with the Indian firm.

Satyam’s bid to build a 75 million dollar, 10 hectare software facility at Deakin University in Geelong remains in limbo more than a year after it was first trumpeted.

Late last year, Nangia said that Satyam employed around 1000 people locally, with an additional 700 workers in India servicing Australian customers.
