Gujjars appeal to PM for special package

Srinagar, June 6 (PTI) Ahead of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh”s two-day visit to Kashmir from tomorrow, Gujjars of the state have sought a comprehensive socio-economic package to resolve their pending demands. The demands include opening of a tribal university, inclusion of Gojri language in Eighth schedule of Constitution and a special census of nomadic Gujjars and Bakerwals.

“Gujjars had been demanding a tribal university in the state prior to 2007 when the first-ever National Tribal University was established in Madhya Pradesh. This demand is still pending with the Centre,” said Dr Javaid Rahi, National Secretary of Tribal Research and Cultural Foundation, a frontal organisation of Gujjars in Jammu and Kashmir.

According to Rahi, Gujjars constitute 20 per cent of the total population of the state. The university, if established, could promote studies and research in tribal art, culture, tradition, language, custom, medicinal systems, forest-based economic activities, including special studies in the flora and fauna, and advancements in technologies relating to natural resources of the tribal areas of the state, he said.

“The case for inclusion of Gojri language in the Eighth schedule is pending with the Union Government since 1991 which is adversely affecting the development of tribal culture of Gujjars in Jammu and Kashmir,” said Rahi. The community demanded that a special census be conducted of lakhs of nomadic Gujjars and Bakerwals of Jammu and Kashmir who are presently under seasonal migration along with their livestock in the upper reaches of Northwestern Himalayas.

He said Gujjars are demanding raising of a full-fledged ”Gujjar Regiment” in the Army on the pattern of Jat, Rajput and Dogra Regiments since 1947, which is still pending with the Union Government. The organisation also appealed to the PM to provide a “special rehabilitation package” for lakhs of Gujjars and Bakerwals in the state, besides constituting a task force to ensure speedy implementation of development schemes in Gujjar-populated areas.

The community demanded job share in central government and special employment drive for Gujjars.

Caste councils warn couple about marrying in same community

Greater Noida (Uttar Pradesh), May 13 (ANI): The Bhatti Village and Caste Council has warned a couple not to marry in the same ”gotra” in Uttar Pradesh”s Greater Noida city.

The Bhattis are one of the largest Rajput warrior clans in India.

The councils” members said that Jaivendra Baisla and his bride-to-be, Manisha Bhatti, belong to the same ”gotra”, and that they both are descended from a common ancestor.

However, the families of both have refuted the claim.

Jaivendra Baisla is due to marry Bhatti, who hails from Bisnoli village, on May 15.

He said his family was busy in the preparations, when the judgement of the village council was forced on them.

“My marriage was to be on 15th of May. We were busy with the preparations but some people from Chittairah village (Baisla”s village) have banned this marriage. They have warned us that if this marriage takes place then they will forcibly stop it,” said Baisla.

“They have threatened that anything thing can happen if this marriage takes place,” he added.

The caste council from Chittairah village, where Baisla lives, ruled against the marriage and even threatened to kill the groom, if he goes ahead with the marriage.

Meanwhile, the bride-to-be, Manisha Bhatti, expressed her fear of the village council”s death threat.

“A village panchayat (council) of Chittairah has objected. I just want my marriage to take place on the date it was supposed to. They have threatened to shoot my husband-to-be and I request that nothing of this sort should happen,” said Bhatti.

The council has threatened not to let Manisha Bhatti enter the village.

“We are stopping this marriage because we are from Bhatti ”gotra”, and all the girls from this ”gotra” are our sisters.

Shouldn”t we send our girls outside the ”gotra” or should we get them married within the same ”gotra”?” said Rajvir Bhatti, head of Chittairah village council.

“All the people from Bhatti ”gotra” are brothers and sisters and cannot marry each other,” he added.

Earlier on March 30, a sessions court in Karnal had awarded death punishment to five persons on the charges of killing a young couple – Manoj and Babli, who had married in 2007 against the community”s wishes. (ANI)

Fake IPL tickets stun Nari

Former India skipper Nari Contractor, who had to return home after being stopped at the gate of the D Y Patil Stadium on last Sunday for not carrying a valid ticket for the IPL final, said that he was flummoxed and wondered how this was allowed to happen by the ticket issuing authorities.

“I was completely stumped when I was asked for a badge to accompany the ticket. I did not have the badge, as it was not given to me along with the ticket. I just turned around and went back,” Contractor said.

“I would not blame the gatekeeper. He was doing only his duty. The main issue is how the Mumbai Cricket Association issued these fake tickets (by IPL),” the former India Test opener said.

Contractor had traveled all the way from his residence in South Mumbai to Nerul in the satellite city of Navi Mumbai a distance of around 35 kms only to return home without witnessing the summit clash between eventual champions Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians.

The former India skipper had not seen any IPL match this season after the MCA boycotted all home matches of Mumbai Indians that were played at the Cricket Club of India’s Brabourne Stadium.

“The final was the first IPL match I would have seen this season as no passes were issued to me (or others) by MCA for the matches held at the CCI because of the dispute,” Contractor said.

Around 200 tickets for the final were handed over by IPL authorities directly to MCA officials who, in turn, distributed them to their members and former cricketers and all were stopped at the gate.

It needed the intervention of MCA’s joint secretary Lalchand Rajput who spoke to IPL’s CEO Sundar Raman before the association’s guests were allowed into the stadium but by then Contractor had chosen to go back.

The MCA has decided it will raise the issue of humiliation inflicted on Contractor at the upcoming BCCI working committee meeting here on May 2.

“We have written a letter to BCCI that many of our guests were stopped at the gate of the D Y Patil Stadium though they had valid tickets for the final as the persons manning the entry points declared them as fake,” MCA’s joint secretary Rajput informed PTI yesterday.

“It needed my personal call to IPL CEO Sundar Raman before they were allowed in after a long wait, but Contractor had, by then, returned home,” he said.

“The matter will be taken up at the Board’s Working Committee meeting (on May 2),” Rajput said.

MCA has also demanded that in future, the staging of all IPL ties will have to be done through the respective local association, the former India opener said.

This year, for example, Mumbai Indians directly dealt with the Cricket Club of India and held all the seven home matches at the Brabourne Stadium without going through MCA and the latter, in turn, boycotted these ties.

alik, Awan accused of direct involvement in Bhutto’s murder

Islamabad, Apr.22 (ANI): Slain Pakistan Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto’s chief protocol officer Aslam Chaudhry’s legal advisor, Asad Rajput, has blamed Interior Minister Rehman Malik and law and parliamentary affairs minister Babar Awan of being directly involved in the former premier’s assassination.

Talking to media persons here, Rajput said the UN enquiry commission’s report over Bhutto’s tragic death has clearly established that former President General Pervez Musharraf had masterminded the gun and bomb attack on Bhutto.

He said that a number of high profile personalities, including former Punjab Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi, Intelligence Bureau chief, the Federal Investigation Agency and the Rawalpindi police were equally responsible for the December 27, 2007 attack, The Nation reports.

Chaudhry had accused both Malik and Rehman of sabotaging the security arrangements, which were put in place at Rawalpindi’s Liaquat Bagh, where the ghastly incident took place.

It is worth mentioning here that according to the UN report Malik, who was in-charge of Bhutto’s security and Awan along with the current presidential spokesperson Farhatullah Babar and Lt. Gen. (retired) Tauqir Zia had sped off in the back-up bullet proof Mercedes soon after Bhutto was attacked and did not stop till it reached Zardari House in Islamabad. (ANI)

Baby hyena turns cynosure of all eyes at Bhopal zoo

Bhopal, July 12 (ANI): Officials at the Van Vihar National Park, the zoological gardens in Bhopal are a delighted lot since a little hyena cub has been brought here from the jungles.

The little female cub has become a cynosure of all eyes here.

Forest rangers overseeing the jungles in Satna region, about 377 kilometres from Bhopal, found this abandoned young hyena, although the hyenas are known to be very possessive, caring and social.

Soon the Conservator of Forests at Satna rushed the orphaned hyena to the Van Vihar National Park.

Prior to arrival of this young hyena, the park had just one old hyena and now the authorities are delighted on the inclusion of this cub amongst other animals in the park.

“We had just one hyena in our national park (zoo), which is very old. Now this baby hyena has come from Satna forest. We are more than willing to accept this hyena in our park. We are taking care of its food and rearing it. We want this baby to grow up into healthy adult hyena so that it can stay in the park for longer period,” said S. S. Rajput, Director of the Van Vihar National Park in Bhopal.

Veterinarians at the zoo have assessed the hyena cub to be around three months old. The park officials have christened it as “Lusi”.

Presently, the cub is on a diet of minced fish and milk, being fed through a feeding bottle.

A hallmark of Van Vihar National Park at Bhopal is that all the animals are kept in almost their natural habitat. Most of the animals here are either orphaned ones, usually traced in the state’s forests or brought from other zoological gardens under exchange programme.

There are different types of hyenas such as brown hyena, striped hyena, spotted hyena or the laughing hyena.

Hyenas are regarded as nature’s major scavengers. They also feed on small animals, insects and even fruits. Of course there are instances of hyenas collectively targeting a game larger in size such as deer and calves of wild buffaloes, if found alone.

A pack of hyenas is usually nomadic, moving from one water hole to another but never straying more than 6 miles (10 km) from one. By Ram Chand Sahu (ANI)

Pak using delaying tactics due to lack of evidence against Mumbai suspects: Defence lawyer

Islamabad, July 10 (ANI): While Pakistan has vowed that it is sincerely probing the Mumbai attacks and would soon start the trial of the six men accused of masterminding the November 26-29, 2008 carnage, documents regarding the case and the details of the evidence against the suspects have still not been handed over to the defence lawyers, casting serious doubts over Islamabad’s intentions.

Pakistan’s Attorney General, Sardar Latif Khosa claimed that the trial process is heading in the right direction, but it is learnt that important documents regarding the case have still not been handed over to the defence lawyers, The Dawn reports.

India has already made it clear that the resumption of peace talks with Pakistan would depend on progresss in the Mumbai probe, and the United States along with several western countries are monitoring Pakistan’s efforts to penalize the perpetrators, as it has failed to punish the militants accused of carrying out terror strikes against India in the past.

Earlier, Khosa had said that the trial would start ‘soon,’ but failed to mention a date.

“There are no reasons (for a delay) other than the fulfillment of some legal requirements and resolution of technical issues before the start of the trials,” he said.

On the other hand, lawyers representing the suspects like Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi and Zarrar Shah, claimed that the government does not have any evidence against the suspects.

“I have applied to get the copy of the charges submitted by the police, but am still awaiting. In fact, there is no evidence against my client. That is why the government is not showing any enthusiasm in this matter. I would say it is using delaying tactics,” said Shahzad Rajput, who is representing one of the suspects.

The Pakistan government has been claiming that the 26/11 probe is in its final stages as it has acquired vital information, but the statement of the suspects’ lawyers has certainly put a question mark over Islamabad’s credibility. (ANI)

Agra students do a ‘ Sholay’ act atop a water tank

Agra, May 13 (ANI): Six agitating students of the Bhim Rao Ambedkar University at Agra on Tuesday climbed atop a water tank and threatened to commit suicide if their demands are not met.

The students who belong to the National Students Union of India (NSUI) were demanding the implementation of a scheme according to which the fees of students belonging to families with an annual income of less than one hundred thousand rupees are to be paid by the Social Welfare Department of the state government.

The students claimed that whereas all other universities did abide by this directive, Agra University was yet to implement it.

Further the students said that the university authorities had turned a deaf ear to their repeated requests for the past one year which in turn forced them to resort to this step of public demo atop a water tank.

“The Uttar Pradesh government came up with an order in 2006-2007 that the fees of students belonging to families with an income less than one hundred thousand rupees whether belonging to backward castes or general category would be pardoned. But this Government order has not been implemented so far in our University,” said Devesh Rajput, a student.

The students also accused the University authorities of denying those students who were unable to pay the fees from appearing in the examinations.

However, the registrar of the university feigned ignorance of any directive issued by the government vis-à-vis the fees of students belonging to poorer sections of the society.

“I have asked them to show the Government order. It is our prime responsibility to implement the Government order. We will definitely implement the order of the government if there is any,” said Om Narayan Singh, Registrar, Bhim Rao Ambedkar University, Agra.

These students remained atop the tank for four hours before the Agra city’s Superintendent of Police reached the spot and persuaded them to come down and took them to the Registrar of the University. (ANI)

New Delhi, May 12 (ANI): BJP candidate from the Pilibhit seat Varun Gandhi has complained to the Election Commission against the supporters of his rival BSP candidate Ganga Charan Rajput for allegedly distributing liqour and money ahead of polling.

“We have learnt from reliable sources that liqour is being carried and distributed from trucks in violation of the election code of conduct,” Varun Gandhi’s personal secretary Anand Chaudhary submitted a complaint to the poll panel on Tuesday.

The liqour was illegally stored in the house of Bachchu Lal Verma of Barkheda village in Pilibhit, Gandhi’s complaint read.

“This liqour is being given to voters as an incentive to influence them to their side,” Chaudhary said.

Gandhi’s office has faxed the copies of the complaint to the Uttar Pradesh Chief Electoral Officer, Returning Officer, Pilibhit and Superintendent of Police.

Gandhi had also received reports of money being distributed to voters allegedly by supporters of BSP candidate Ganga Charan Rajput, Chaudhary said.

The BSP government in the state had not taken any action despite complaints, he added. (ANI)

White tiger adopted by Tata Indicom in Bhopal’s National Park

Bhopal, May 6 (ANI): Tata Indicom has adopted a white tiger, an inhabitant of the Van Vihar National Park in Bhopal.

Ten-year-old Bhagat was adopted under the animal adoption project run by the park, on an annual basis by Indicom.

The initiative is an attempt by the park authorities to provide better facilities to its inmates through the money given by the companies.

Tata Indicom became the first company to have adopted three big cats including a lion, panther and the white tiger at the park.

“Tata Indicom has become the first company for Van Vihar which has adopted three big cats of the park, a lion, tiger and panther on annual basis. It is a good thing that corporates are also joining the project. The best part is that the animal has been adopted before it is put on display,” said S.S. Rajput, Director, Van Vihar National Park.

The adoption is an attempt by the Tata Indicom to do their bit in saving the species.

“This tiger has been adopted under the Tata Indicom corporate social responsibility under the ‘Save the Tiger’ initiative. We have adopted a lion Inder, white tiger Bhagat and a panther Triga. White tigers reach Bhopal’s Van Vihar National Park

Bhopal, Apr 28 (ANI): A pair of white tigers have been transported to the Van Vihar National Park in Bhopal.ften termed as the pride of Bhopal, Van Vihar is home to a number of animals, including the white tiger, the panther and the lion.

The tigers have come from the Nandankanan National Park of Orissa under an Animal Exchange Programme of Central Zoo Authority (CZA). In return, a yellow tigress and a pair of jackals have been sent to the Nandankanan.

“There was no tiger in the Van Vihar after the death of a tigress named ‘Rini’ in September 2008. The 18-year old white cat died of cancer a few months ago. Since white cats were the main attraction of this zoological garden, visitors were urging us to bring white tigers to the zoo,” said S S Rajput, director, Van Vihar National Park.

White tigers get their colour, including blue eyes and chocolate stripes, through an unusual genetic condition and are sometimes bred intentionally as exotic zoo animals despite the risk of birth defects. (ANI)

Voila, drought city has guests: Rain, bumper crops

THE RAIN gods have beaten politicians this year in drought-prone Bundelkhand. A bumper monsoon – the first in 10 years – has led to a bumper crop.

And election time is also harvesting season in the region’s seven impoverished, parched districts. “We’ll think about the elections later,” says Ramakant Patel, (43) overseeing workers on his 70-acre farm in Gadhar village in the Jalaun district, 200 kilometres south-west of the state capital of Lucknow.

“Anyway, what does it matter? Year after year we pleaded for better irrigation, for some help when our brothers were committing suicide,” he says. “Now God has come to our rescue, why should we care about the politicians?” Impoverished Bundelkhand – all seven districts are listed among the poorest in the country – has suffered severe drought for five years.

There are only the most basic irrigation facilities in the region, with the odd canals full of debris and poorly maintained. So when the rains stayed away, crops failed, indebtedness grew and farmers began committing suicide.

Some died of starvation. There is no official record of how many because the Bahujan Samaj Party state government responded by denying the deaths – and handing out relief cheques of Rs 600 to Rs 800 to the families left behind.

The village square is deserted; there are no farmers lounging, talking about the weather – or politics. In fact, there is no sign of the approaching national election.

No banners or posters, no public meetings. Even the politicians are waiting for the harvesting season to end.

They know no one will listen while the frenzy continues. “Yes, we will vote,” says Patel.

“Voting has become a ritual in our country. But it doesn’t really matter who comes to power, does it? They are all the same.

” The rage has built up over the years. In 2007, 90 per cent of the land in Bundelkhand was left unsown because the farmers had not even recovered the cost of the seeds.

The following year, per capita income for the region’s 1.2 crore people dipped to Rs 18,597 per annum, less than half the national average. But a good monsoon last year has changed everything, at least for the time being.

Giant harvesting machines – an unusual sight in Bundelkhand – are rolling in from Punjab. There are celebrations in the villages as the harvesting machines rattle across the fields, disgorging grain by the tonne in the larger farms.

The small farmers are frantically busy with their sickles, stashing away the yield before joining the teeming labourers in the bigger fields. There was such impatience to get at the wheat that the villagers even bypassed the traditional harvest festival in mid-March.

“When you have gold in your fields after a gap of so many years, it is impossible to keep the sickles waiting,” says Ramsingh Rajput (40), a farmer with 40 acres in Jalaun. “We feel like a woman who is blessed with a child after years of prayers.

Pink village of Gujarat

Rajkot, Feb.25 (ANI): Inspired by Rajasthan’s capital Jaipur, popularly described as Pink City, a village in Gujarat has all the its structures painted in pink to gain popularity as a Pink Village.

Patidad Village near Gondal in Rajkot District of Gujarat wears pink colour all around the year.

The concept of transforming the village into Pink was made possible by village’s prominent Gayatri family.

Chandubhai Patel, head of the Gayatri Parivar, said that the family decided tohoose pink colour because it is the colour associated with God.

“We all wanted to make the Patidad village as the ideal village of the State. People talk about Jaipur as pink city, so we chose the pink colour to paint the whole village. We painted entry gate, schools, colleges with pink colour. The reason why we chose pink colour is because pink is the colour of God,” said Chandubhai Patel, a man behind the project.

Be it temples or gates of the village, all have been painted in pink. Religious messages or quotes from various mythological texts have been written on the walls to inspire everyone in the village. Prominent among the quotes are from Bhagavata Gita.

The villagers are delighted to have the makeover.

“We never thought that our village would turn out to be nice like this. Because of Gayatri parivar our village has got this look, from entry gate to every nook and corner. I don’t think there would any other village like ours painted in pink, ” said Dhol Payal, a villager.

In Rajasthan, residents of Bhammoriya Village, 35 kilometres from Jaipur city, have also developed a Pink Village. The pink colour is considered to be a connotation of Rajput hospitality. By Suresh Soni (ANI)
