‘Garba’ rehearsals in Gujarat to mark ‘Navaratri’

Rajkot, Sept 19 (ANI): With the outset of ‘Navaratri’ starting from Saturday, women of all age groups are practicing the traditional Indian folk dance, ‘Garba’, with a view to perform during the most celebrated dance festival in Rajkot and Ahmedabad.

The nine-day festival observes musical groups getting ready for cultural programmes like the Garba dance across the country. Dancers wear colourful traditional attires and are decked up with heavy jewellery.

Kajal Anandkat, a Garba dance trainer, said that the women who come to get trained in Garba are above fifty years of age and are as energetic as the young girls who also learn Garba from her.

“Girls of all age groups come here to learn Garba. But this year, I have noticed that many women above fifty years old are coming forward to learn this form of dance. They dance with the same enthusiasm as young girls,” said Anandkat.

Looking at these women practicing Garba, it is hard to say that these women who are above fifty are still so energetic while dancing as for Vasanthben Patel age is no bar for learning dance.

“I have been learning Garba for the last twenty days. I am fifty-year-old. I learn dance with girls of age 20 to 25 years. I have the stamina just as the young girls over here. I can dance just like them,” said Patel.

As Rajkot is getting ready to give a spectacular performance in the dance festival, Ahmedabad is also gearing up for the celebrations.

The dancing grounds have been decorated with lights. The stage is all set and the dancers are practicing hard to deliver a good performance during the festival.

“The preparations are on the go. A Goddess idol will be installed to mark the beginning of the function,” said Sameer Tanna, a choreographer.

The Navaratri festival is celebrated in honour of Goddess Durga, a manifestation of mother Goddess in Hindu mythology.

It is believed that during the days of Navaratri, Goddess Durga descends on earth to rid it of the demons and bless her devotees. (ANI)

Political parties set up Ganesh Puja pandals in Rajkot

Mumbai, Aug.27 (ANI): In a bid to cash on one of the biggest gatherings of devotees during the ongoing Ganesha festival, political parties have set up pandals or makeshift temples here.

The 10-day festivities mark the birth anniversary of Lord Ganesha, signifying good omen and prosperity.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has set up a huge ‘pandal’ for Ganesha followers, anticipating devotees converging in large numbers.

People are turning up in these pandals fascinated by the life-size Ganesha statues and to participate in prayers.

BJP’s local unit in Rajkot has planned grand celebrations during the days ahead with various cultural programmemes and competitions scheduled on this occasion

Political activists and organisers of the Pandal say that the objective behind all this set up is nothing but to encourage people’s participation in religious programmes such as this one.

“We are organising it for the second time. This programme is based on our religious sentiments. The people of Rajkot are aware that even though the programme is organised on behalf of the BJP but the motive is to encourage participation of Hindus and to propagate religious sentiment,” said Nitin Bhardwaj, City President, Bharatiya Janata Party.

Organisers deny it has anything to do with politics or publicity.

“This is not a political programme, it is a religious programme. Rajkot, Saurashtra, is the land of Mahatama Gandhi, Krishna and so on…This is a religious programme in honour of Ganesha,” said Dhansukh Bhanderi, organiser.

Meanwhile, Shiv Sena party has set a huge prayer tent and is drawing hundreds of devotees.

“The faith in Ganesha is such that people come here themselves. It is completely a public affair. There is no political intention in it,” said Jimmy Adwani, President of Shiv Sena’s Rajkot unit.

Initially, Ganesha Chaturthi was a personal or domestic affair, celebrated within homes. At the turn of the last century, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, a revolutionary freedom fighter and crusader against the British colonials proposed it become an even of bringing people together and promote unity. Maharaja of Rajkot’s 1934 Rolls Royce to become world’s most expensive car

London, Aug 19 (ANI): A custom-built Rolls Royce that once belonged to the Maharaja of Rajkot is set to become the world’s most expensive car when it goes under the hammer in Germany.

The car, known as the Star of India, is expected to fetch 8.5 million pounds at the auction being conducted by the Rolls-Royce Museum at Muhlheim, reports the Telegraph.

The luxury car, built in 1934, has a number of features, which were considered unique at the time including headlights, which are controlled by the steering wheel and track the vehicle’s progress in the road.

Similar technology – now called “adaptive curve lights” – is featured on a number of cars today including BMW’s and Mercedes.

The price raised for 1934 Phantom II 40/50 HP Continental “All-Weather Convertible” is expected to exceed the 7.2 million pounds paid for a 1957 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa at an auction in May.

It is part of famed Rolls-Royce collector Hans-Gunther Zach’s private collection, and bids are being invited until September 15.

Zach is accepting bids on 24 other rare Rolls-Royce’s and three Bentleys including a 1926 Rolls-Royce 40/50 HP Phantom I Open Tourer, built for the Maharaja of Nanpara in India and known as the “Aluminium Sculpture” because of its natural aluminium body and chassis.

Also up for grabs is a Phantom II Cabriolet “Hunting Car” built for the India’s Maharaja of Rewa. Designed to hunt India’s tigers, the “Hunting Car’ has a specially designed gun rack built into the chassis. (ANI)

Foundry Industry stages comeback in Gujarat

Rajkot, June 30 (ANI): Foundry Industry in Gujarat has staged a comeback as new business with the revival in demand from engineering and automobile sectors.

Although, the demand from the export sectors is yet to pick up significantly, the domestic demand from engineering and automobile sectors is showing signs of recovery.

The engineering sector has witnessed a surge in demand of over 50 percent since March this year and the trend is estimated to continue during the rest of the year.

With the revival in demand from engineering and automobile sectors, foundry units across the country have increased their production capacities to 55-60 percent from around 30 to 40 percent in December last year.

Chhagan Bhai, owner of Antala Export, says that the demand for the foundry products has picked up in March-April.

“The export orders which we used to receive some time back, we are not receiving them now because of global recession. As far as the local demand is concerned it has picked up in March-April,” said Chhagan Bhai.

Meanwhile Bhavesh Patel, President, Rajkot Engineering Association said that the condition of the foundry units greatly improved in last 2-3 months.

“Foundry industry was greatly affected by the recession till about six months back. The units manufacturing automobile parts came to a near stand still but their condition has greatly improved in last 2-3 months and we hope the situation will greatly improve in the coming months,” said Patel.

The economic crisis has led to the closure of 500-700 foundry units. (ANI)

Global warming takes its toll on mango production in Gujarat

Rajkot, May 14(ANI): The production of world famous kesar mango has been reduced this year in Gujarat due to global warming effects.

Just five years ago, Talala market yard, one of the largest wholesale mango markets in India, was full of mango boxes.

Over three million boxes of 10 kilograms each used to come to the markets a month. But this figure has come down to five to seven hundred thousand for the last two years. This year too, the picture is not rosy.

Kesar mangos are exported to the Gulf, Pakistan, South Asian countries and the United States where it was allowed only last year.

Chhagan Bhai Patel, Vice President of the Talala Market Yard, said that there was a drop of 30 per cent this year and there are not enough mangos for export.

“We don’t have mangos for export due to the poor mango crop this year. You go to any state of India, the production of mangos is low,” said Patel.

Gordhan Bhai, a mango trader, attributed this short fall to the climatic conditions.

“Once upon a time Talala Gir kesar mangos were being exported across the world. The production has decreased. So, we are getting good price. This is due to the climatic conditions here,” said Bhai.

UPA govt. failed to improve security: Arun Jaitley

Rajkot (Gujarat), Apr 26 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) General Secretary Arun Jaitley on Sunday said that the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government has failed to improve the national security even after the Mumbai terror attacks last year.

“The negligence of national security by the UPA Government will have huge consequences. The Australian tennis team has refused to play the Davis Cup tie in Chennai. The Indian Premier League has also shifted this year’s edition to South Africa,” Jaitley said at a press conference here.

He further said Congress’ stubbornness would bracket the security of India with Pakistan.

“After Australian team’s refusal to play in India, foreign teams will continuously refuse to play here. The 2010 Commonwealth Games are going to be held here next year. What picture of India would it represent with it? Tourists and investors would be reluctant to visit our country. With their stubbornness they are bracketing the security of India with Pakistan,” Jaitley added.

The BJP leader also criticized Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh for failing to provide a Finance Minister.

“There is no credibility in his (Manmohan Singh) existence. From the last 150 days, Manmohan Singh has failed to provide a Finance Minister to this country. There is no Finance Minister in this country since December 1,” Jaitley added. (ANI)

Sonia Gandhi needs to do her homework before entering Gujarat: Modi

Vapi (Gujarat), Apr. 25 (ANI): Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday attacked Congress party President Sonia on issues of economy and joblessness in the country.

“I asked Sonia to do her homework before she comes to Gujarat”. Modi’s reaction comes a day after Sonia Gandhi visited Modi’s strongholds,” Modi said.

Modi said that Gujarat is the fortunate state that has the chance to choose the PM because BJP’s Prime Ministerial candidate (L.K.Advani) is contesting from Gujarat.

Ridiculing the fact that Congress Prime Ministerial candidate Manmohan Singh is not even contesting the polls, Modi said that Manmohan is trying to take the back door.

On Friday, Gandhi slammed the Modi Government for dilly-dallying over advancing low interest loan to farmers.

Gandhi termed the BJP-ruled State Government’s attitude as pro-capitalist at the cost of the poor and rural folks.

“I am not surprised that the big industrialists are given thousands of crores loans at normal rates of interest which they pay after 20 years. But I feel sad that when our Central Government had decided to give seven percent interest of loan to farmers, the BJP-ruled State Government did not look upto it for two years and gave excuses,” Sonia Gandhi said at an election rally in Rajkot.

She also appealed people to vote for the Congress for a strong and stable government. (ANI)

Sonia, Rahul rallies in Gujarat cut down due to security

Ahmedabad, April 20 (IANS) The Congress has drastically cut down the number of public meetings for its top leaders in Gujarat this week due to security concerns, party officials said Monday.

The national headquarters of the Congress in New Delhi last week turned down the Gujarat unit’s plea for a series of public meetings for party president Sonia Gandhi, general secretary Rahul Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh across the state with more meetings in the cities and towns of the Saurahstra region in western Gujarat, the officials said.

The first to arrive in Gujarat April 24 for campaigning would be the Congress chief who will address public meetings only in Jetpur in Saurashtra, Halol in central Gujarat and Jeralu in north Gujarat, leaving out major cities such as Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Surat and Vadodara, before she returns to New Delhi in the evening.

Rahul Gandhi would be holding only road shows amid tight security in Ahmedabad, Vadodara and Surat April 26. He will return to the national capital the same day.

The prime minister, who would be on a campaign tour of the state April 27, will not be addressing any public meeting and instead meet prominent citizens, intellectuals and acamedicians in select meetings to be organised by the Congress’ state unit in Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Vadodara and Surat. He will also return to New Delhi the same day, the officials added.

Rajkot has a “batsman” candidate

Rajkot/Jaipur, Apr 21 (ANI): Mukund Dudhatra, an independent candidate from Rajkot, has captured the imagination of the residents by campaigning as a cricket batsman.

Infact the Election Commission has given him a symbol of a “batsman” so he dresses himself like an Indian cricketer and comes out on roads and streets padded up with bat in his hand and helmet on his head.

Dudhatra has also declared his asset of nearly 1.25 crore rupees during nominations, but when it comes to contesting the election he has made sure that he campaigns alone without any pomp and show at a mere cost of 10,000 rupees.

He believes that cricket is considered a religion in the country, which attracts people from all walks of life. He hopes to garner votes especially from the youth who are enthralled with the sport.

“My election symbol is very influential for the youth as most of the candidates who stand for elections are above the age of 50 and will never accept such a symbol, ” he said.

Ganpat, a government employee in Rajkot too was surprised to see him campaign his way, but isn’t still sure to vote Dudhatra for his credibility.

“The Indian Premier League is coming up. We join him and show our enthusiasm-playing cricket with him. We will vote this time, but still not sure whom to vote,” said Ganpat.

Meanwhile, Bharatiya Janata Party supporters in Jaipur have decided to put up cartoon campaigns to influence voters.

The cartoon-centric remarks were apparently put to depict Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot in different postures aiming to highlight the failure of the Congress party.

Gehlot cartoons put up had shown Gehlot as a parrot chirping “corruption”. Also depicted, acting with vengeance against BJP leaders and also cutting ribbons from one place to other.

“People look at it very keenly. Normal hoardings or big hoardings do not create much impact like this on people. Through these cartoons people develop a curiosity in their minds and come from far places to actually watch it. The cartoonist has shown the governments real administration and their deeds and his opinion in a few words,” said

Congress open to offer Surat seat to NCP

Ahmedabad, April 7 (IANS) The Congress Tuesday said it was still open to offering the Surat Lok Sabha seat in south Gujarat to the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) though their alliance has broken up in the state.

‘The Congress is decided on fielding its candidates from 25 Lok Sabha seats in Gujarat while still leaving the option for the Surat seat for the NCP to decide,’ Gujarat Congress president Siddharth Patel told reporters here.

‘However, if the NCP is not interested in any seat-sharing arrangement for Surat, the party would go ahead within two days and choose its candidate,’ he added.

He said there had been no talks on giving the Ahmedabad (West) and Rajkot seats to the NCP and thus there was no question of sharing the two constituencies with it.

Asked about the prospects of the party candidate against the Bharatiya Janata Party’s prime ministerial candidate, Patel said: ‘Suresh Patel is the most ideal candidate to take on L.K. Advani considering his huge popularity in the Gandhinagar constituency.’

Global economic slump hits Gujarat transporters

Saurashtra (Gujarat), Apr 4 (ANI): The truck industry of Saurashtra in Gujarat has bulk of its long fleet lying idle.

A conservative estimate says that there were more than one lakh of trucks always running to meet the demand. However, the recession has completely changed the scenario for last two to three months.
Almost 3,00,000 people dependent on the transport industry for their livelihood are without any succour. The truck drivers are not getting their salaries.
“Almost 80 per cent of the industry has been hit because of this global slump. Those industries that demanded for ten trucks are now managing with only two of them whereas the rest keep on lying there. Another problem is when the trucks reach their destination; there also they have to wait for days to get the goods loaded. Because of this, the expenditure keeps on increasing and it gets difficult for the financer of the trucks to pay the bank installments,” said P.K Jadeja, a truck driver.
The truck association of Rajkot has lost all hopes for a revival.
“Here in Rajkot, 10,000 trucks are loaded in a month. Among them, only 40,000 get loaded whereas the rest remains unloaded. When these trucks reach Surat, they keep on standing there for two days for goods and when they finally get loaded and come back in Rajkot again they have to wait here for the goods. The market condition is very bad at the moment,” said Dashrath Singh Gohil, Vice President, Rajkot Goods Truck Association.
Besides decreased demand of trucks, a hike in prices of diesel and increase in toll taxes compounded their woes. By Suresh Soni (ANI)

NCP declares eight candidates in Gujarat

Ahmedabad, Apr 4 (ANI): The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) on Saturday announced the names of eight candidates in Gujarat for general elections.

The party’s decision indicated that its tie-up with the Congress in the State has broken.

NCP Gujarat president Jayant Patel blamed the Congress for the break-up.

“I have declared eight candidates for the Lok Sabha elections in Gujarat. The Congress has behaved in an arbitrary way. It has declared candidates for 25 out of 26 seats in its own way and said that they have kept the Surat parliamentary constituency for us. We had demanded two seats of Rajkot and Ahmedabad (West). Now we will fight almost on all the 26 seats,” Patel said.

The NCP leader informed that the results were affected in 2002 State Assembly elections after Congress and the NCP decided to fight separately in the state.

“In 2002 State Assembly elections, when Congress and the NCP had fought separately, the results were affected with almost 15 seats going in favour of the Bharatiya Janata Party due to split in secular votes,” he added.

Meanwhile, Congress Spokesperson Arjun Modhvadia said that the decision to fight separately would not affect the poll results any way.

“This is an unfortunate development as we are alliance partner at national level. But, I don’t think that it will affect poll results in any way,” he added. (ANI)

Set ablaze and fighting for life, woman says her daughter did it

Sixty-year-old Diwaliben Bhalodi, a resident of Moti Marad village in Dhoraji taluka of Rajkot district, has been battling for life at Junagadh Civil Hospital after she was allegedly set ablaze by her daughter Kanta, 30.

This is the second such incident in Saurashtra in a month’s time when a parent was attacked with murderous intentions.

Earlier, a minor school girl had murdered her parents and brother in Porbandar.

Dhoraji police said Diwaliben had been admitted to the hospital on March 28 with severe burn injuries. The old woman, who has received more than 60 per cent burns, gained consciousness on March 31, the police said.

In her statement to the Junagadh police, the old woman has accused her married daughter, Kanta, who lives with her husband at Vajodi village in Jasdan taluka of Rajkot district.

Kanta, along with other relatives, had admitted Diwaliben in the hospital on March 28.

The woman told the police that Kanta, who had come to meet her at Moti Marad, in a fit of rage, poured kerosene on her and set her afire, when they were alone in the afternoon.

The Junagadh police have registered a case and transferred it to the Dhoraji police. Dhoraji police said they are yet to find the exact cause of the quarrel between mother and daughter.

A case of attempt to murder has been registered against Kanta.

Sayajibaug zoo’s search for friends a huge letdown, admit authorities

The concept of ‘Friends of Zoo’ fails to catch up in Vadodara unlike in Ahmedabad and Rajkot

‘Friends of Zoo’ is a concept in which citizens are motivated to lend financial assistance to the zoo and adopt animals there. The Ahmedabad and Rajkot zoo authorities have been successful in promoting this concept, but their counterparts in Vadodara are still struggling to generate awareness about the same.

Ahmedabad zoo authorities have already collected over Rs 10 lakh; Rajkot zoo authorities have collected Rs 33,000. However, the Sayajibaug zoo has been able to collect only Rs 7,000. The reason, according to the zoo officials, is inadequate publicity about this concept.

Ahmedabad authorities said that they have been trying non-stop to bring the public closer to the wild animals. “The fact that we have collected Rs 10.94 lakh speaks for our efforts. Today, we have a group of people who are not just lending financial help but are also emotionally attached to the animals that they have adopted. This is the basic motive of the whole exercise,” said R K Sahu, Superintendent, Ahmedabad zoo.

The concept was mooted in Rajkot in July 2008. “It is not the money which is the main factor behind the Friends of Zoo scheme but it is the effort to bring people closer to the wild animals. We keep on floating different ideas that attract people. Now they are realising the cause behind the efforts and are coming forward to adopt birds and animals,” said M G Maradia, Curator, Rajkot zoo.

The situation at Sayajibaug zoo, however, is glum as people have adopted only a couple of birds. “The scheme was never given due importance, and proper publicity has not been done to attract the people. The results are evident: only a couple of parrots have been adopted by the people against the payment of Rs 7,000,” said an official at Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) refusing to be named.

VMC Commissioner M K Das also admitted that there has been a lack of effort. “It is true that we have not been successful in popularising the concept due to lack of publicity. The amount generated is also negligible. However, we are planning to make a renewed approach. A meeting of the concerned persons would be called in which prospective people who can adopt animals would also be invited,” he said.

Cong names nominee in Gandhinagar, Mallika left to fend for herself

The Congress on Tuesday declared its candidates for Gandhinagar and Navsari constituencies, thus clearing apprehensions that it may back the candidature of danseuse Mallika Sarabhai in Gandhinagar.

Suresh Patel, who is Congress’ sitting MLA from Kalol, will contest from Gandhinagar, while Bhavna Patel is the candidate from Navsari.

On Tuesday, senior Congress leader Arjun Modhwadia said the names have been cleared by the party high command. Suresh Patel is considered to be right candidate from Gandhinagar because of his influence among Patel voters, who account for around one-third of the total electorate of the constituency.

As for Bhavna Patel, Modhwadia said she had been involved in social activities in the Navsari area and hence connected with people at the grassroots level, which might help her in the polls.

However, the candidate for Rajkot seat is yet to be declared, as Congress’ ally at the Centre, Nationalist Congress Party, has claimed for the seat.

Mallika has declared to contest as an independent from Gandhinagar constituency against BJP’s prime ministerial candidate L K Advani.

However, Mallika had told mediapersons earlier that she would welcome it if the Congress supported her candidature. However, she had made it clear that she would not fight under the banner of any political party but as an independent candidate.

Sources said the Congress wanted Mallika to fight on its ticket, if she wanted the party’s support.

Promos fine for Amisha, not polls

Actor Amisha Patel, who was in Ahmedabad on Tuesday for a promotional event, said she is not contesting the Lok Sabha polls.

Earlier, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) had reported that Patel will contest from Rajkot on a party ticket.

Initially, Amisha evaded questions on her entering politics and refused to speak anything on the topic.

On being asked whether she contemplated contesting the polls, she said that since she wasn’t interested, such a question did not arise.

“I have not accepted any offer to contest the elections; neither am I campaigning for any party,” she said.

She, however, said she was not against the notion of actors making a foray into politics. “If you can handle both, then why not,” she said.

She also did not deny that she is not interested in politics. “Who is not interested in politics? Every person, every citizen of the country is interested in politics,” she said.

On a lighter note, she added that her grandfather, Barrister Rajni Patel, was a politician and the Congress Pradesh Committee president of Mumbai.

NCP to field Bollywood actor Amisha Patel from Rajkot

Ahmedabad, Mar 21 (ANI): The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) Gujarat unit president, Jayant Patel, on Saturday said the party has decided to field Bollywood actress Amisha Patel from the Rajkot parliamentary constituency in the general elections.

“I called up Amishaji yesterday and sought her consent. She agreed immediately,” Patel said.

The NCP leader said the actress has her roots in Gujarat, which would help to secure victory for the party.

On Friday, the NCP had earlier declared that it could field either cricketer Ajay Jadeja or Bollywood actress Amisha Patel from Rajkot.

Patel said fielding Amisha would be a winning proposition for the party.

“I have known the family of the actress for years and can say with confidence that her contesting will be a winning proposition for NCP in the Saurashtra region,” he added.

Patel said the party could also field another celebrity from the Ahmedabad (East) constituency. (ANI)

Music composers capitalise on election fever, creating campaigning songs

Rajkot, Mar 19 (ANI): With general elections round the corner, it is not only hectic schedule for politicians of all hues, but also for a good number of music composers.

These music composers are busy creating new lyrical jingles and songs lauding the achievements of major political parties and even individual candidates in the fray.

For instance, budding singers and music composers in Rajkot have come together to make the most of the election fever.

“The words of the song have been changed keeping election in the mind. I feel the song which has already won an Oscar award will benefit the Congress party and also will make an impact with the voters,” said Kinjal Joshi, a singer.

With an aim to spice up its election campaign, Congress party has bought the rights to play ‘Jai Ho’, the Oscar-winning song from the movie ‘Slumdog Millionaire’.

Congress leaders said this particular song which means ‘Let Victory Prevail’, will be played during rallies in villages, rural towns and even cities to lure the voters.

Indeed, the elections have been a sort of blessing in disguise for the music composers. Until the other day, they were reeling under the current economic downturn.

“We do not owe allegiance to any of the parties. We have kept in mind the requirements of the political parties and accordingly we have composed the songs. If the parties like these, we will be paid well and it will improve the prospects of artistes like us,” said Utpal, a music composer. By Suresh Parikh (ANI)

Environment activists in Rajkot mourn felling of trees

Rajkot, Mar 3 (ANI): Environment activists mourned rampant felling of trees by holding a condolence meeting in Rajkot.

The activists owed their allegiance to Rajkot Nature and Adventure Club. They assembled on the premises of a residential complex housing government employees. They held a condolence meeting to mourn the loss of trees in their city.

The activists also held a prayer ceremony and garlanded the cut trees playing devotional songs. They wanted the culprits to be brought to book.

“So many trees have been cut in Rajkot, but the culprits have not been punished so far. The miscreants should be dealt with severely,” said Bharat Bhai Sureja, President, Rajkot Nature and Adventure Club.

According to the activists, around 300 trees have been cut in Rajkot in past one year. (ANI)
