India fuel inflation at 14.27 pct y/y as at July 10

July 22 (Reuters) – India’s fuel price index rose 14.27 percent in the year to July 10, while the food price index climbed 12.47 percent, government data released on Thursday showed.

Fuel price inflation was flat on the previous week’s annual rise, while the pace of food price inflation accelerated from last week’s 12.81 percent.

The primary articles index was up 16.48 percent, compared with the previous week’s reading of 16.25 percent.

While normal rains would cool food inflation after last year’s spike following the worst drought in nearly four decades, a fuel price hike last month would keep pressure on the headline inflation.

Violence in Patna following murder of nine-year-old

Patna, May 30 (ANI): Murder of a nine-year old, who was allegedly kidnapped by his neighbours, triggered violent protest here.

Agitated local residents burnt tyres and raised slogans on Saturday to express their anguish over the murder of Satyam, the killed boy, allegedly kidnapped by two of his neighbours.

Anguished over the incident, local residents ransacked suspects’ shop and burnt tyres in the middle of the road to display their pain and anger.

According to Pankaj Kumar, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Satyam’s two neighbours, a grocery owner and his son have been arrested after they confessed to their crime before police.

“Satyam and Abhinav were two friends. Satyam used to visit his place often. One day the latter lured Satyam and took him along. He had planned his kidnapping a month ago and then murdered him. Abhinav had thought that he would show Satyam’s clothes to his parents and take money. After murdering him, he called from Kankarbagh booth and demanded ransom,” said Pankaj Kumar.

However, Satyam’s uncle complained that the police officials refused to file FIR earlier and had to approach the higher authorities. Only then action could be taken.

“They did not register our FIR and did not cooperate with us. When we went to higher authorities, they helped us. If on 28th itself police officials had helped us, my nephew would have been alive,” said Manish, Satyam’s uncle.

Satyam’s father Rajesh Kumar, a businessman received a ransom call for 50,00,000 rupees on Thursday night (May 28).

The boy’s decomposed body was recovered from a house on Saturday morning and the exact cause of death could be known only after post-mortem. (ANI)

River Ganga continues to face pollution

Varanasi, May 4 (ANI): River Ganga remains highly polluted even after being declared the ‘National River’ by the Central Government.

The Ganga was declared the ‘National River’ to facilitate the clean up operations.

A Ganga River Basin Authority was also set up in order to check pollution in the river and its degradation.

But the problems for the River Ganga are far from over. It remains immensely polluted. Filled with chemical wastes, sewage and even the remains of human and animal corpses, it poses major health risks to around 400 million people living by its side and all others who benefit from it.

Ganga also suffers from another major problem called silting which results into chocking of its flow.

Some people also believe that constructing dams on the Ganga could be the cause of low water level in the river.

Acharya Jitendra, president, Ganga Mahasabha, a voluntary organisation working for saving the Ganga said, “Nearly 243 dams are slated to be constructed on the tributaries of the Ganga in Uttarakhand. This will obstruct the flow of water into the main river. So obviously, there will be sand dunes and the water level will be low. If the tributaries don’t release water into the river, how will there be water in the Ganga.”

The residents say that even after being declared the ‘National River’, no steps have been taken to improve the condition of the Ganga.

“The condition of the Ganga is deteriorating by the day. There is more sand in it. Though it is declared a ‘National River’, no efforts are being made to clean it. If water is resleased from the dam, then only the water level will increase in the river,” said Rajesh Kumar Singh, a resident.

Efforts have always been made to clean up the Ganga since a long time but none have been proved successful.

The Rajiv Gandhi Government launched the Ganga Action Plan in 1984, but yielded little result. The river is said to be directly affecting the lives of around 400 million people who live by its side. By Girish Kumar Dubey (ANI)
