LeT man sneaked in as driver during Patil visit to AP

In a startling disclosure, a Lashkar-e-Toiba operative arrested from Hyderabad on May 3 has told interrogators that for four days in December 2008 he had driven President Pratibha Patil’s son Rajendra Shekhawat around the city as she paid a two-week official visit to Andhra Pradesh.

This was more than a year after the alleged Lashkar operative, Mohammad Zia-ul-Haq, reportedly received a consignment of a pistol and two hand grenades concealed in a box of sweets in New Delhi.

Haq is also linked to the May 7, 2006, hand grenade blast in Hyderabad’s Odeon Cinema.

Haq has told investigators that he “worked as a driver” for the President’s son as the Head of State was paying a visit to Hyderabad.

Haq has said he was preparing to target foreigners working in companies like Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu when he was arrested. Police officials in Hyderabad questioning Haq confirmed the disclosure but did not reveal whether Rashtrapati Bhavan had been briefed.

Haq was arrested from Hyderabad’s Edi Bazaar after his telephones and e-mails were intercepted. Following the arrest, two other sleeper cells in Srinagar and Nepal were busted with sufficient leads that the “handler” of all the three operatives — part of the Lashkar’s ‘Indian Ocean’ network — was an LeT Commander based in Saudi Arabia. Haq has reportedly listed all the “exchanges” he had on planned terror strikes with his “handlers”.

Haq’s interrogation has also laid bare the relative ease with which LeT operatives like him made border crossings from Pakistan Occupied Kashmir and Dhaka. He has said that after being inducted into the LeT in Saudi Arabia in 2002, he was taken to Muzaffarabad for a 30-day arms training and issued arms and ammunition in Kotli, PoK. LeT “guides” later escorted him across Poonch, after which he reached Banihal on foot and then moved to Delhi and finally, Hyderabad.

The other border crossing that Haq describes is to Bangladesh in 2008, where he was called to meet his “handler” since he was delaying “execution of offence (attacks)” in Hyderabad.

His interrogation report reads, “After receiving firearms and cash at Delhi, my handler Abdul Aziz started pressurising me to execute/commit some sensational offence. As per his instructions, either I have to throw the hand-grenade in the crowd or the targeted person. I was planning to throw the hand-grenade in the crowd gathered nearby Hitech City (Hyderabad) in front of hotels or on the foreigners working in Deliotte company. Though initially I thought I alone can execute the task, I started requesting my handler to send someone in support to me…”

Haq has said that among the 25 LeT recruits with whom he got a brief arms training in Muzaffarabad was a young man from Tamil Nadu.

He has also disclosed that it was in Saudi Arabia that he was taught how to use the Internet and create e-mail IDs.

He said that while operatives like him used e-mails and accessed Internet from five specific locations in Hyderabad, LeT commanders in Pakistan and Saudi Arabia always used VoIP ( voice-over-internet-protocol) to convey instructions.

According to the PM”s press advisor Bishnu Rijal, Nepal will hold separate meetings with Madheshi Janadhikar Forum (Loktantrik) chairman Bijaya Kumar Gachchhadar, Terai Madhes Loktantrik Party (TMLP) chairman Mahantha Thakur and Sadbhawana Party chairman Rajendra Mahato.

He will also meet with CPN (UML) lawmakers from Bagmati, Narayani and Janakpur zones. He will meet with other CPN (UML) and Nepali Congress leaders in the evening.

Nepal intensified the latest series of political consultations last week.

The leaders of the fringe parties suggested to him to either form the government by taking the Maoists in confidence or quit, it is learnt.

Apologetic IPCC chief Pachauri switches to neutral climate advisory role

London, Mar. 27 (ANI): Rajendra Pachauri, the chairman of the UN-sponsored Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), is to adopt a neutral advisory role and has agreed to stop making statements demanding new taxes and other radical policies on cutting emissions, The Times reports.

In an interview with The Times, Pachauri, apologised for the IPCC’s handling of complaints about errors in a report on climate change affecting Himalayan glaciers.

He also apologised for describing as “voodoo science” an Indian Government report that challenged the IPCC’s claims about the rapid melting of Himalayan glaciers.

But, Dr. Pachauri, 70, rejected calls for his resignation and insisted he would remain as chairman until after the publication of the IPCC’s next report in 2014.

He claimed he had the support of all the world’s governments and denied that, by remaining in post, he was undermining the IPCC’s chances of regaining credibility with the public.

“It is not correct to say there are people who don’t trust me,” he said.

He admitted it had been a mistake to give the impression, in many interviews, that he was advocating specific actions to cut emissions.

Last year, he called for higher taxes on aviation and motoring, said people should eat less meat, and proposed that hotel rooms should have electricity meters to charge people extra for using air conditioning.

Speaking in London yesterday, he said he would focus in future on presenting the science on climate change rather than advocating policies.

“I will try to clarify that I’m not prescribing anything as a solution. Maybe I should be more careful [in media interviews] in laying down certain riders. One learns from that and I’m learning.”

Dr. Pachauri said he wanted more power over the IPCC secretariat and an extra one million dollarsa year to fund its work, on top of the five million dollars it already receives.

He said the IPCC is planning to recruit more spin-doctors to help it promote its work and defend itself against attacks by climate sceptics. (ANI)

Danish Prime Minister meets Manmohan Singh

New Delhi, Sep. 11 (ANI): Danish Prime Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in New Delhi on Friday.

The two leaders discussed bilateral, regional and international issues.

During the meeting, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on co-operation between the governments of both the nations in the areas of environment.

Ole Lonsmann Poulsen, Denmark Ambassador to India and Vijay Sharma, Secretary to India’s federal Ministry of Forests and Environment signed the MoU in the presence of premiers of both the nations.

Danish Prime Minister’s two-day visit to New Delhi would also include meetings with the head of the UN climate panel Rajendra Pachauri.

Global talks for a new U.N. climate agreement have become mired in differences over how much money and technology rich nations will provide to poor countries to help seal a climate deal to replace the Kyoto Protocol that expires in 2012.

India fears that emissions targets will stunt its economic growth and has said it will take its own unilateral action to cut pollution. (ANI)

Danish PM to discuss climate change during visit to India

New Delhi, Sep.10 (ANI): The Prime Minister of Denmark, Lars Loekke Rasmussen, will arrive here on Friday on a daylong working visit to India to speed up negotiations on a climate deal ahead of a key summit to be held in Copenhagen between December 7 and 18.

Rasmussen will meet with his Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh and the UN’s top climate scientist Rajendra Pachauri, who is chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

Rasmussen will meet with Dr. Singh at Hyderabad House at 12 p.m. The two sides will have delegation-level talks after which an agreement on environment cooperation will be signed.

In the afternoon, he will deliver a speech on “Green Economy” organized in cooperation with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) at the Hotel Oberoi.

He will emplane for Vienna on Saturday morning.

On Tuesday, at the start of the Nordic Climate Solutions conference gathering decision-makers and businessmen in Copenhagen, Rasmussen said the negotiations were progressing slowly “in all areas.”

“It’s very difficult because these are not just issues concerning climate,” but also economy and technology, he said.

“Take the example of India, where I will meet the Indian prime minister who wants to gives his population of one billion some prosperity and who therefore doesn’t want to commit to restrictive reductions unless the world brings new technology to his country,” Rasmussen said. (ANI)

Fodder is scarcer, dearer in Jammu

Jammu, Aug 21 (ANI): Fodder is scarcer, dearer in Jammu leaving the milkmen with little to feed their cattle. It has led to decline in milk production.

Continuous dry spell in the region is said to be responsible for the unprecedented hike in price of fodder especially wheat straw commonly known commonly as ‘Bussa’.

Rising prices have taken animal fodder out of the reach of the milkmen.

Wheat straw that was generally available in the market between rupees 1 to 2 per kg is currently being sold at rupees 8 per kg, four times higher than its original price.

“We are in trouble. We don’t get any fodder. The available fodder is sold at rate of 8-10 rupees per kg. Once I went to Gangyal, a place in Jammu, I return empty hand from there too. Cattle had to remain hungry,” said Ahamed Din, a milkman.

The scarcity of fodder has also resulted in decline of milk production as milkmen find it difficulty to provide their livestock with the high protein diet.

Even the fodder sellers agree that there is a scarcity of fodder.

“Availability of fodder is very less so Gujjars are facing a lot of problems. They are unable to increase milk production because cattle are not being feed fodder. The fodder is expensive,” said Rajendra Gupta, a fodder store owner.

Wheat straw is currently being imported to Jammu from Punjab due to which traders are charging exorbitant prices.

Animal fodder includes hay, straw, silage, compressed and pelleted feeds, oils and mixed rations, and also sprouted grains and legumes. By Nadeem Khan (ANI)

Farmers oppose fuel price hike

Rohtak (Haryana)/Mumbai, July 2 (ANI): Farmers have reacted strongly to the hike in the prices of petrol and diesel.

The delayed monsoon is forcing them to irrigate their fields through tubewells, which consume around 15-20 litres of diesel. They said the price hike would make the running of tubewells very difficult.

“This is the time to sow paddy in the fields. The monsoon has not arrived as yet. We have to use tubewell water to irrigate the fields. The tubewell consumes around 15 to 20 litres of diesel. But now, after the hike in prices of fuel, how will we arrange for so much money to run the tubewell? It will be very difficult for us. We will face heavy losses,” said Rajendra, a farmer.

The farmers said the prices of vegetables and other commodities would also go up, as transportation costs would rise because of the fuel hike.

“With the increase in fuel prices, the prices of vegetable will also go up,” said Bheema Chavan, a vegetable seller in Mumbai.

Petrol and diesel prices rose by as much as 10 percent in India, on Wednesday, the first increase this year and one of the steepest ever.

Petrol prices rose by four rupees a litre, while diesel rates were hiked by two rupees a litre.

Prices were last raised in June last year, when the average price of India’s crude imports were 113 dollar a barrel, but they were cut in December and again in January as oil prices tumbled.

The government has not increased the price of cooking gas and kerosene to protect the poor and middle-class.

Despite price increase, oil firms say they were likely to suffer a revenue loss of 560 billion rupees on sale of petrol, diesel, cooking gas and kerosene this fiscal. (ANI)

Monsoon News – Monsoon Update – Monsoon hits Bihar

Patna, June 28 (IANS) The much-awaited monsoon rains hit Patna Sunday afternoon leading to water logging in several low lying areas of the state capital. Heavy rains also lashed other parts of Bihar much to the relief of people, who were praying for rains to get rid of unbearable heat.

Minutes after heavy rains lashed Patna, hundreds of people including old, young and children danced, sang and offered prayers in welcome.

“Monsoon rains have finally hit Bihar. Heavy rains lashed differed parts of Bihar marking the arrival of monsoon,” meteorological department director S.I. Lashkar said.

Lashkar said that rain will continue across the state Monday too. Heavy rains were reported in Bhagalpur district and adjoining areas. “In the next few hours, rains will hit many districts across the state,” he said.

In Patna, water logging was reported in Kankarbagh, Rajendra Nagar, Boring Road, Frazer Road and other parts following the rains.

Elated over rains, people, particularly farmers, who were worried till Saturday and held special prayers to invoke the rain gods, celebrated. “It is a sign of life for us,” Ravindra Mahto, a farmer here, said.

Mahto said that the delay in the arrival of monsoon was giving sleepless nights to farmers, as nearly two-thirds of agriculture is dependent on the rains and two-thirds of the state’s population is dependent on agriculture.

Anxious farmers Saturday organised a wedding of frogs in a small village in the state’s Darbhanga district to appease the rain gods. According to folk beliefs, such marriage of frogs will bring rains.

CBI blows lid of a sex racket in Mumbai

Mumbai, May 28 (ANI): The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) busted a sex racket in Mumbai and arrested eight persons as well as rescued 34 girls who had been forcefully pushed into the flesh trade.

This was disclosed by Rishi Raj Singh, the Joint Director of CBI, Western Region while addressing a press conference here on Wednesday.

He said that during their raid at different places in the city and Vashi, the CBI was successful in arresting five traffickers namely Vitthal Patil, Raju, Najunda Gowda, Ranjeet and Rajendra who were indulging in trafficking minor girls from places like Assam, West Bengal and also from across the border from Bangladesh.

“The social workers were sent as customers. The deal was done at Hotel Kuber in Vashi as customers had told that a lot of people will be coming and later received tips of 34 girls, involved in the racket,” said Rishi Raj Singh.

Reportedly, the pimps used to lodge the girls in inhuman conditions. These also included places like godowns located at different places in the city.

The pimps used to provide pick-up service to transfer the girls to the customers.

The CBI sleuths seized rupees 4,80,000 from the spot and this amount is believed to be the earnings of the girls through this illegal activity at Sindhi Colony in Vashi.

“When we raided and searched the place in Sindhi Colony, we rescued 13 girls and recovered rupees 4,80,000. During the inquiry, we found out that that it was the earning of the girls, out of prostitution, which were not given to them,” Singh added.

Reportedly, the racket had been in operation for the past three years.

In the guise of providing them employment, these girls were lured and then inducted into the flesh trade. (ANI)

Apex court questions bail for murder suspects

New Delhi, May 27 (IANS) The Supreme Court Wednesday sought the Uttar Pradesh government’s response to the grant of bail to the alleged killers a top official of the Indian arm of Italian business firm Graziano Transmissioni.

A vacation bench of Justice Markandey Katju and Justice Deepak Verma issued notice to the Uttar Pradesh government on a lawsuit by the Greater Noida-headquartered firm, challenging the grant of bail to the six accused persons involved in killing the CEO, Lalit Kishore Chaudhary.

Chaudhary had been bludgeoned to death Sep 22 last year by a 200-strong mob of dismissed workers which had barged into the company premises and indulged in large-scale violence.

The violence had resulted in injuries to around 40 executives and workers of the firm. The dismissed workers were demanding they be reinstated.

While seeking the state government’s explanation as to why the bail granted to the six accused persons should not be cancelled, the apex court bench, however, refused to stay the Allahabad High Court order for the bail.

The six accused, who were granted bail May 19, are Kailash Chand, Jaswant Singh, Pankesh Kumar, Jogendra Singh, Rajendra and Komal Singh.

Challenging the grant of bail by the high court to the six, the company contended that bail should not have been granted when the accused have been charged with heinous offences punishable with death or life imprisonment.

Appearing for Graziano, senior counsel Siddharth Luthra argued that the high court had erred in freeing the accused on bail as the seriousness of their offences that included murder cannot be ignored.

He also criticised the high court order, saying that it granted bail despite apprehensions that the accused might tamper with evidence and try to influence witnesses after their release.

Luthra also argued that after their release, the six accused would also instigate other workers of the firm to resort to agitation.

He said the high court had ignored the fact that the accused in order to pressurise the management to concede their demands had taken started rioting and brutally killing the CEO while injuring 40 others.

Nepali Congress vice-president Ram Chanadra Poudel said the NC and the UML would be making joint efforts to win support from other parties for the UML-led government.

Meanwhile, senior Maoist leader Mohan Baidya has said that the new government is unlikely to take shape up before Sunday.

Baidya said his party would not allow parliamentary proceedings until Sunday, adding that the Maoists would not accept a government that is formed outside of the parliament.

He also argued that the democratic image of Nepali Congress and CPN (UML) has been tarnished after the latest political development.

Maoists are scheduled to hold mass gatherings in four different places across the country on May 17, to intensify their protests against President Ram Baran Yadav’s move, Nepalnews reported. (ANI)

UML, Sadhawana decide to pull out of govt

Kathmandu, May 3 (ANI): Facing widespread criticism from various political parties over sacking of Army Chief, the ruling Maoist-led government suffered a further setback when one of its five-coalition partners, Sadbhawana Party, also decided to pull out of the Maoist-led government

The Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist Leninist) had already decided to pull out of the Maoist-led government earlier in the day in opposition to the latter’s unilateral decision to sack Chief of Army Staff Rookmangud Katawal, a Nepal News report stated.

In the evening, Ministers representing the UML resigned from their positions following the party decision.

Leader of the UML team in the government Bam Dev Gautam tendered resignations on behalf of all six ministers representing the party.

Earlier, an emergency meeting of the party’s standing committee held over the cabinet decision to sack the army chief Sunday afternoon, decided to call back its ministers from the government and withdraw its support to Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal.

Party general secretary Ishwor Pokharel told media that the party had decided to quit the government and withdraw its support to the Maoists for taking unilateral decisions one after the other violating the accord of taking decisions of national importance with a consensus.

A time has come to forge a new alliance of all parties with a national consensus, Pokharel said.

Sadbhawana party has also decided to pull out of the government. The chairman of the party and Minister for Industry and Commerce Rajendra Mahato told journalists after meeting President Ram Baran Yadav Sunday evening his party had quit the government. He had gone to meet the President in a private vehicle. (ANI)

Five killed by forest fire in western Nepal

Kathmandu – At least five people were killed trying to put out a forest fire in western Nepal, police said Saturday. The fire broke out in a community forest in Hastipur village of Gulmi district, about 300 kilometres west of the Nepalese capital, on Saturday morning and was now threatening three other nearby villages.

“The five, including three women, were killed when they were trapped by the blaze while trying to control the spread of the fire,” said Rajendra Prasad Palikhe, Deputy Superintendent of Police in Gulmi district.

He said the fire was burning out of control, fanned by strong winds and dry conditions.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known.

Nepal has seen high number of forest fires across the country this year due to long dry spell and warmer than normal temperatures.

On Thursday, 13 soldiers died in central Nepalese district of Ramechaap trying to put out a forest fire that was threatening a hospital.

Another five deaths were reported last month due to forest fire.

Nepal does not have equipment or fire fighting teams to combat forest fires. (dpa)
