Firing on many cylinders

G.D. Raja, Managing Director, GD Foods & Beverages Pvt Ltd

The number 60, prominently written on the registration plate of the BMW 3-Series car, almost reads as ‘GD’. Sensing my inquisitive look, he said, “Yes, it’s 60, and it’s my idea,” he says, with a triumphant grin on his face. “It stands for Gunasekaran and Devaghi, my parents. All my vehicles have the same number,” says 32-year-old G.D. Raja.

Raja has a chain of businesses – commodity broking (Adventures India), instant coffee export, a chain of coffee pubs (Goodmorning Café), logistics (LRG Logistics), real estate (GD Shelters), jewellery retail (GD Gold Garden) and a play school (GD Public School).

Ask him whether he became an entrepreneur by accident or was forced upon him, he says, “No, no. It’s purely by choice.” His father, who runs a transport business in Chennai, wanted to see him as a top-level executive in a big corporate house. Despite his father’s persuasion, he chose not to take part in any campus interviews when he was doing his MBA at Bharathidasan Institute of Management, Tiruchi. “Because, I was very stubborn that I should start something on my own,” says Raja, founder CEO of the GD Group of companies.

In 2003, after he completed his MBA, he ventured into a business as planned, with an initial investment of Rs 3 lakh, which he “borrowed” from his father. He took distributorship of food products from various manufacturers.

He stocked and distributed many products from packaged atta, maida to asafoetida to provision stores from a small portion of a building in Chennai. There was an 8-10 per cent margin. As most of the products were sold on credit, and the shop owners did not pay on time, it often landed him in financial problems. “During such a crisis, my friend, Rajam, who studied with me at BIM, used to bail me out by lending money from her salary.” But, that did not go on for a long time. At one point, the situation worsened and he could not even pay the rent for the portion he had taken on lease. He quit the distribution business.

And that is when the idea of having his own brand struck him, and they (Raja and Rajam) finally narrowed down on instant coffee. It was in early 2004, when Sunrise and Bru were the dominant players in the market. When approached, Consolidated Coffee Ltd at Hyderabad readily agreed to manufacture for him. ‘Goodmorning Cafe’ was born. He positioned it as a B2B product and sold it to commercial establishments, “as this segment was not very brand conscious”.

The first month sales were Rs 8,000 but in three years, the annual turnover went up to Rs 4 crore. CCL could not meet his demand, as it had to meet its own export orders. In a tight spot again, he decided to set up his own manufacturing facility. Though many banks rejected the project because of his age and lack of collateral, thankfully, State Bank of Hyderabad agreed to extend the loan. “That was the breakthrough for us,” says Raja. In late 2011, when he was 31, he set up his instant coffee manufacturing facility at Andimadam in Ariyalur district of Tamil Nadu, with a 200-tonne-a-month capacity. After that there was no looking back.

As there were a lot of enquiries from overseas, he started exporting too. Now the unit is converted into a 100 per cent export-oriented-unit. The unit is now being expanded to manufacture 750 tonnes a month.

He extended his coffee export business by foraying into ‘coffee pubs’, under the brand Goodmorning Café. It’s a chain of five outlets, now only in Chennai.

In between, in late 2004, as he had “a lot of free time in the evenings”, he started a commodity broking firm, Adventures India. The peak business time for the Commodity Exchange is towards the evening (to coincide with the New York exchange). “I learnt that commodity market has a higher potential than the stock market, and took membership from MCX,” he explains.

He positioned his broking firm as an ‘exclusive commodity broking firm’. Due to lack of awareness, he had a tough time bringing in investors. His perseverance paid. Now Adventures India carries out transactions worth Rs 600 crore a day. “We are South India’s leading commodity broking firm with more than 200 branches across the country,” says Raja.

His logistics business too has an interesting story behind. He invited P.R. Ramasubrahmaneya Rajha, Chairman of the Ramco group, as the chief guest to inaugurate an Adventures India outlet in Rajapalayam. During their conversation, Rajha asked him to start a transport business, with a promise to award Ramco’s contracts in that region. LR Logistics was started with 30 trucks. And, now it runs 54 trucks, exclusively for Ramco.

Now his group employs a little over 300 people. “My dream is to expand the business and employ at least 1,000 people by 2015,” says Raja.

Tamil Nadu: Left, MDMK to support ADMK in RS polls

The Opposition Left parties and the MDMK have decided to extend support to the AIADMK for the coming Raja Sabha election. The term of six members from the state, including four from the AIADMK, former Union Minister Anbumani Ramadoss and Congress leader E M Sudarsana Natchiappan, is coming to an end next month.

It was rumoured that MDMK chief Vaiko and CPI state secretary D Pandian, both of whom had lost in the Lok Sabha election, were in the running for the one seat the AIADMK was ready to share. However, it was announced on Wednesday after a meeting of the allies at Opposition Leader J Jayalalithaa’s Poes Garden residence that the smaller parties would support AIADMK candidates.

With only 55 MLAs, AIADMK needs the support of the allies — CPM, CPI and MDMK — to get its second nominee elected. The party has convened its executive committee meeting on Thursday when the two candidates for RS are expected to be announced.

On the other side of the political divide, the Congress can send a representative to the RS and is said to be in talks with the DMK for one more, while former ally PMK has sought its help in re-electing Anbumani. It is not clear if the DMK leadership has taken a favourable decision in this regard.

CPI-M seeks A. Raja”s resignation on 2G-spectrum scam

New Delhi, May 21 (ANI): Communist Party of India- Marxist (CPI-M) leader Sitaram Yechury reiterated his party”s demand for the resignation of Communication Minister A Raja over the 2G telecom spectrum allocation controversies.

Speaking to mediapersons here on Thursday, Yechury said: ”It is clear from the auction which has taken place that the government would be getting double the revenue much more than the expectations.”

“The 60,000-70,000 crore rupees talks that have taken place during this auction, if you compare it with the 2G auction; they sold it for a mere 2,000-2500 crore rupees. Since then we are alleging that a huge money scandal is involved in this case. And the 3G auction proves that a scam has taken place,” he added

“Till the scam is investigated, we want the Minister to resign from his post. This was the demand we kept initially and we reiterate the same demands now after the 3G experience,” said Yechury.

The auction for the 3G spectrum telephones was successfully completed on Wednesday after a prolonged exercise lasting 34 days.

Reportedly, this has assured the government of rupees 67,710 crore in revenue with the Pan-India licence price touching rupees 16,750.58 crore .

Communication Minister raja had been gaining criticism and the government is believed to have lost around rupees 60,000 crore for not taking the auction route stipulated by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).

Companies had to pay rupees 1,651 crore for pan-India 2G licence that came clubbed with start-up spectrum. (ANI)

Non-implementation of NRO verdict: Why Gilani should not be notified asks Pak SC

Islamabad, Apr.30 (ANI): Reprimanding the authorities over non-implementation of its verdict on the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) even after four months, the Pakistan Supreme Court has asked as to why it should not issue notice to the Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani.

During a suo motu hearing against the non-implementation of the NRO verdict, Justice Raja Fayyaz Ahmed asked Deputy Attorney General Agha Tariq Mehmood as to why the apex court’s orders have not been implement in real terms.

“The prime minister represents the government, so it’s his responsibility to ensure implementation of the NRO verdict. What is happening?” Justice Ahmed asked.

“Why are the government functionaries delaying the implementation of the NRO verdict? What about compliance with the court’s orders?” he said when Mehmood pleaded the court to grant more time for implementing its verdict.

Mehmood told the court that the Prime Minister had ordered a fact-finding inquiry to look into the issues, but documents regarding his orders could not be procured.

The apex court then asked him to produce all documents regarding the developments in the case before it during the next hearing. (ANI)

2G spectrum scam: A Raja to make a statement in Rajya Sabha

New Delhi, Apr 29 (ANI): Union Telecom Minister A Raja will make a statement in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday, giving his defence on the controversy over his alleged role in the 2G spectrum scandal.

There was an uproar in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday after lawmakers demanded the resignation of Raja after a leading newspaper claimed proof against him over his alleged role in the 2G spectrum scandal.

They demanded that Raja should step down from his ministerial position with immediate effect.

Meanwhile, there are reports that in Tamil Nadu, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) is hoping to take full advantage of the issue.

AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa has accused the Centre of double standards for forcing Shashi Tharoor to quit over the Indian Premier League (IPL) scandal, but keeping Raja despite the allegations of corruption against him.

“When charges were raised by Lalit Modi about Shashi Tharoor”s dubious involvement in IPL deals, the junior minister was sacrificed. But when it comes to allies, the UPA is forced to submit to blackmail. The issue is not just one of probity in public life,” said
Jayalalithaa.

“It is about the loot of Rs 1 lakh crore of funds due to the nation. It is the sort of money that could have provided independent houses free of cost to every family in Tamil Nadu,” she added.

Raja had in October last year said he wouldn”t step down from his position in the wake of charges that his spectrum allocation policies have caused a revenue loss of 60,000 crore rupees.

“I will not step down. Ours is a government that has followed all rules to the latter and spirit by following the recommendations of TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India),” he said.

Raja also alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) Government was involved in the “biggest ever scam”, as it distributed free spectrum to operators depriving the exchequer of over 1,60,000 rupees crore revenue.

Raja added that the NDA government not only distributed free spectrum, it also violated all norms by giving the frequency far in excess of 4.4 MHz to many leading operators. (ANI)

Jayalalithaa demands sacking of Telecom Minister Raja from Union Cabinet

Chennai, Mar 20 (ANI): All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazagam (AIADMK) general secretary and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa on Saturday urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to sack Union Telecom Minister A Raja.

Jayalalithaa’s demand came after the Supreme Court declined to interfere in Delhi High Court”s findings against him in the 2G spectrum allocation.

On March 12, the apex court had declined to interfere with the adverse findings of the Delhi High Court against DoT and Raja in the issue.

“We make it clear that the findings reached by the High Court is not interfered with in this particular case,” the Supreme Court said.

In a statement issued here, Jayalalithaa said: “The interests of justice will be served only if Raja is removed from his post as Union Minister. Now that he has the Supreme Court”s order to back him, the Prime Minister should not hesitate further to sack Raja.”

Jayalalithaa said in the statement that sacking of Raja would give credence to Singh”s claim that he is a Prime Minister with “zero intolerance” for corrupt practices.

Elaborating the actions leading to the case filed by the STel, a telecom firm, Jayalalithaa said the company had approached the court following the Department of Telecom (DoT) arbitrarily advancing the cut-off dates for 2G allocation. (ANI)

Farmers along India-Pakistan border seek compensation for land acquired in 1947

Daokae (Indo Pak Border) Sep. 11, 2009 (ANI): Farmers in villages along the India-Pakistan border in Attari Sector have been demanding compensation for land acquired from them along the Zero Line along the border since 1947.

A 14 feet wide stretch was prepared later to enable the Border Security Force personnel to patrol for security purposes. It was prepared on local farmers’ land for which these farmers say that they have yet to be duly compensated by the government, though they admit having been paid for the land used for fencing in 1990s.

Hundreds of acres of land falls in the Zero line area. It’s a stretch of about 14 feet wide throughout the border. The Border Security Force (BSF) uses this stretch for patrolling purpose and also to thwart any intruder from Pakistani side.

Punjab shares a 553-kilometre border with Pakistan. Practically, there are two borderlines between India and Pakistan one is “the Zero Line” that divides the two countries and another one is the Barbed fencing erected during the 1990s to keep terrorists and smugglers at bay.

When India fenced the Punjab frontier, it had also divided the land of the farmers that fell on the both sides of the barbed fence.

However, residents of the border villages, along sides of the barbed wire, lament even after approaching the authorities several times, their appeals seeking due compensation could not garner anyone’s attention.

Kashmir Singh, a farmer of the Daokae village, says: “Villagers have nearly 850 acres of land beyond fencing and a part of the land was acquired by the government just after the partition for the making the stretch for patrolling. But nothing was paid to them for the land by the government.”

Villagers residing in the villages in Attari sector including Daokae, Baropal, Nashta, Mahawa, Raja Tal, Noshehra Dhalla, Havanyian have the same demand.

Master Harbhajn Singh of Noshera Dhala said, “About 20 acres of every border village land beyond fencing were acquired for the “Zero Line” and we were not get even a single penny from the government. It is our long pending demand which we want government should look into.”

Kawel Singh another farmer of Noshera Dhala, who claims to own about 50 acres of land beyond fencing, said: ” We have already being facing many difficulties to access our land beyond fencing for the cultivation. Moreover, the government seems to reluctant to pay us the price of our land they acquired for the Zero Line.

Meanwhile, senior officials of the Border Security Force say the demand has been forwarded to the Central Government.

According to Deputy Inspector General (DIG), Border Security Force Mohammad Aquil, the surveys are on relating to the revenue records of the land that was requisitioned from the farmers for the patch of road all along the Zero Line on the India-Pakistan border.

‘The officials of various departments are on the job and the compensations would be paid to the aggrieved farmers at the earliest”, said Mohammad Aquil.

“Government acquired our land just after partition for zero line to be used for patrolling. But, no compensation has been given to us for the 14-feet-wide strip,” said Kashmir Singh, a farmer.

Residents of villages in Attari sector including Daokae, Baropal, Nashta, Mahawa, Raja Tal, Noshehra Dhalla and Havanyian are demanding the compensation.
