Force India, Fisichella on pole position for Belgian Grand Prix

Spa-Francorchamps (Belgium), Aug 29(ANI): Formula One Racing team Force India, which is backed by liquor baron Vijay Mallya, on Saturday claimed the pole position in qualifying session for Sunday’s Belgian Grand Prix, as Giancarlo Fisichella exhibited an incredible performance to come on top.

It was Force India team’s first-ever pole and the fourth for Fisichella, as he recorded a remarkable qualifying time with a lap of 1 minute, 46.308 seconds to start the Belgian Grand Prix at the front of the grid.

“It’s unbelievable. I didn’t expect to be on pole. It’s amazing. It’s fantastic. I’m so happy. Pole position! Is it true?,” Fisichella said.

“I need to thank the team because they did a fantastic job. I’m really, really happy – and really confident for tomorrow!,” he added.

Meanwhile, Toyota driver Jarno Trulli will start second and BMW Sauber’s Nick Heidfeld will start third following a qualifying session that produced many surprises.

Force India has recently introduced a series of updates to Fisichella and Adrian Sutil’s cars, which showed signs of improvement at last weekend’s European Grand Prix, where both drivers ran well. (ANI)

Ron Dennis quits F1 for good

Woking, Britain – Ron Dennis quit Formula One racing for good after 28 years on Thursday when he left his post of McLaren Racing CEO for the executive position in the company’s automotive division.

Dennis, 61, had earlier this year resigned as team principal of the McLaren-Mercedes F1 team. The new team boss Martin Whitmarsh was also named Mclaren Racing leader on Thursday.

The announcement by McLaren came two weeks after the team’s world champion Lewis Hamilton was disqualified from the Australian Grand Prix for misleading race stewards amid speculation that Dennis may have pulled some strings in the background.

Dennis cited a major restructuring scheme at McLaren, insisting that “no-one asked me to do it.” But the step comes two weeks before an April 29 hearing before the ruling body FIA over the Australia affair in which McLaren could face more sanctions.

“I admit I’m not always easy to get on with. I admit I’ve always fought hard for McLaren in Formula 1. I doubt if (FIA president) Max Mosley or (F1 boss) Bernie Ecclestone will be displeased by my decision,” said Dennis.

Dennis entered motorsport in 1966 as a mechanic for F1 driver Jochen Rindt before leading his own Formula 2 team in the 1970s. In 1981, he took over the helm at McLaren and in the subsequent 28 years celebrated 10 drivers’ titles and seven constructors’ crowns.(dpa)

Barcelona return to “scene of crime” Getafe By Duncan Shaw

Madrid – Barcelona are keen to stay well on top of the Spanish Liga by winning away to modest Getafe on Saturday.

Barca are currently six points ahead of dogged pursuers Real Madrid, and will go to Getafe in good heart after Tuesday’s creditable 1-1 draw away to Bayern Munich which put them in the European Champions League semi-finals.

Josep Guardiola’s team picked up no injuries in Munich. They have a fully fit squad for the first time this season due to the return to fitness of Gabriel Milito, Eric Abidal and Yaya Toure.

However, they will be returning to the “scene of the crime” on Saturday, with a sense of foreboding and trepidation.

Two years ago Barca astonishingly crashed 4-0 in Getafe in a memorable King’s Cup semi-final, and last season they lost 2-0 in the tiny Coliseo Alfonso Perez.

“It will be a difficult game,” said Barca captain Carles Puyol. “We will have to take the game just as seriously as (that) in Munich.”

Later on Saturday, Real will be away to Recreativo Huelva, who are third from bottom.

Real have won 3-2 on their last two visits to Huelva.

They have won 14 out of their 16 league games since Juande Ramos took over as coach from Bernd Schuster in December, and have halved Barca’s lead from 12 to six points.

Real defender Pepe said that “we were dead until the arrival of the new coach (Ramos).

“Now we are a strong team, with players in a good moment, and we hope to continue like this until the end of the season.”

Also on Saturday, sixth-placed Atletico Madrid are at home to lowly Numancia, while Malaga take on Mallorca and Athletic Bilbao face Deportivo La Coruna.

The big game on Sunday is between fourth-placed Valencia and third-placed Sevilla.

Valencia will be hoping to keep ahead of troubled local rivals Villarreal, who have slipped to fifth in recent weeks.

Villarreal – tired and depressed after Wednesday’s 3-0 Champions League thrashing by Arsenal – are away to tricky Valladolid. They will again by without injured Spain midfielders Marcos Senna and Santi Cazorla, who were both badly missed in London.

Sunday’s other games are bitter relegation battles. Bottom team Espanyol are at home to Racing Santander, Osasuna are away to Almeria, Betis face free-falling Sporting Gijon. (dpa)

Racing games ‘lead to aggressive behaviour’

London, April 12 (ANI): Console driving games leave you feeling more aggressive than violent shoot ‘em ups, says a new study.

Previous studies have linked violence in video games to aggression. However, the new study has suggested that video games don’t have to be violent to trigger an emotional response.

It found that driving games could activate more brain regions involved in emotional processing than shoot ‘em ups.

For the study, Simon Goodson and Sarah Pearson of the University of Huddersfield in the UK recruited 30 adults aged between 18 and 45 to play either a competitive driving game, a shoot ‘em up or virtual table tennis against computer-generated competitors.

Brain activity, heart rate and breathing were all monitored during the game, and a questionnaire afterwards assessed their levels of anger, hostility and aggression.

The volunteers scored normally for aggression after playing the driving and shoot ‘em up games, while those playing the table tennis game scored as slightly less aggressive than the average for the volunteers.

However, when it came to brain activity, the driving game caused a significant increase in the temporal lobe, an area of the brain linked to emotional processing.

“It cannot be assumed that aggression is solely related to violent content,” New Scientist quoted Goodson, as saying.

The study was presented at a British Psychological Society meeting in Brighton last week. (ANI)

Fan’s Racing Tip A Dead Cert For Family

Racing fan Danny Shea died from kidney cancer five months ago, but he left his family strict instructions on how to spend the £250 he left them.

As instructed, the Shea family, from Eston in Middlesborough, placed the money on outsider Mon Mome who defied the odds and won the Aintree race at 100-1.

Mr Shea’s wife Pat said she ‘couldn’t believe’ her husband had finally picked a winner.

“He was generally pretty useless at picking winners,” she said.

“He didn’t have much of a clue, though he liked a bet. The best we hoped for was a place.

“I have to say I thought ‘what a waste of money’. But it’s what Danny wanted.”

Mr Shea, who was 66, had worked as an off-shore rigger before being diagnosed with terminal cancer in October 2007.

He knew he would not live to see this year’s National but was convinced that Mon Mome had the talent to defy the odds.

Pat’s brother Pete laid a complicated combination of spread bets with Mr Shea allocating £20 for each punter except Pat who had £60.

Mr Shea’s betting winners were wife Pat, son Martin, daughter Lesley, sisters Pat and Gloria, brother-in-law Pete, and friends Eddie, Freddie, Tommy, Rod and Kelly.

Cyclist Haussler feels more Australian than German

Sydney – Australian-born cyclist Heinrich Haussler wants to ride in the green and gold of his homeland rather than represent his adopted country of Germany.

“I’ve noticed that I feel more Australian than German,” the rising star of European road racing was quoted as saying Tuesday.

“In 2010, I will ride for Australia. My decision is final,” Haussler told the cyclingnews website.

Haussler, 25, was born in Inverell, New South Wales, but moved to Germany at the age of 14 to take up a scholarship at a German sports school.

He added a German passport to his Australian one and has represented Germany at world championship level.

His parents, and his brother and sister, still live in Australia and he said he was determined to give up his German racing licence and race for Australia.

Haussler has found success with new team Cervelo after leaving Gerolsteiner. He finished second in two of the biggest one-day classics, Milan-San Remo and the Tour of Flanders. (dpa)

Chennaiites race to the Malaysian Grand Prix

CHENNAI: Narasimhan Subramanian has formulated the perfect plan. After his flight from Chennai lands at the Kuala Lampur International Airport,
he’s going to quickly freshen up at the airport and then head to his dream destination the Sepang International Circuit, home to the Malaysian Grand Prix 2009. Similarly, many Chennaiites are making the trip across the ocean to watch Kimi Raikonen and Lewis Hamilton, amongst others, bust it out on the race track. “When the first Formula 1 Grand Prix was inaugurated in Malaysia in 1999, I knew my wish to watch the event LIVE would become a reality,” says Subramanian, who heads an advertising agency in the city.

For many of these avid F1 fans, this is not the first time that they are travelling across the globe to watching a Grand Prix live. Samtani, managing director of Stereo Vision, has attended eight Grand Prix, four of which were in Malaysia. “I’ve been to six races all over the world in Malaysia, UK, Singapore and Germany,” says Leela Krishnan, former rally racer and Formula 3 champion in 1992. He is also the technical director (cars) for the Bangalore-based Red Rooster Racing team which will be taking part in the Formula BMW Pacific Series also held with the Grand Prix. Rohan Karat, an IT professional, will be watching an F1 race for the second time. “My first one was in Singapore last year and it was brilliant. I knew I had to come back,” he says.

Recent reports have stated that most of the racers aren’t very happy with the Malaysian track, since it is too hot. Subramanian says one can’t complain about the weather, especially in a tropical country like Malaysia. “I agree it can get extremely hot, but at the end of the day, this track is one of the best it has long stretches, nice curves and is perfect for Formula 1,” he adds.

Rajan Syal, CEO of Federation of Motor Sports Club of India is not attending the event this year, but adds that the Malaysian track is spectator-friendly. However, he thinks the event has come at the wrong time for Indians. “It is exam time for the children and the end of the financial year,” he adds. Samtani feels that things can get stifling on the track. “If we think it’s hot as a spectator, it’ll be worse for the driver. Temperatures are supposed to go over 55 degrees,” he says.

Ferrari seems to be these race fans’ favourite and most of them are looking forward to watching BMWs, McLarens and Ferraris zoom around the track. “The sound of an F1 car is akin to a jet engine. On TV, it all looks so easy, it doesn’t capture the excitement of seeing it at the venue,” says Subramanian. Karat adds that the smell of rubber and the vroom’ of the cars complete the ambience. However, Krishnan prefers catching the action on TV. “The noise and all the hype is exciting at first, but I prefer watching it on TV. Sitting at the track gives you only a view of what’s in front of you,” he says. Samtani adds that purists should watch it on TV. “But if you want to have fun with other petrol-heads this is the best event to watch together,” he says.

Soon, a scent that smells like Lord’s cricket ground

London, February 15 (ANI): Future fragrances may smell like Lord’s cricket ground in London, say perfumers at Procter and Gamble.

They have revealed that they recently captured the essence of the “home of cricket”.

The perfumers revealed that they used a technology called headspace analysis to capture the odours of freshly cut grass, cricket bats, laundered cricket kit and the players’ changing room (minus the players).

They said that they were using them as the starting point for a fragrance.

Lord’s is just one source of inspiration that perfumers are turning to in the hope of creating the next Chanel No 5.

“Perfumers need inspiration, and this can come from people that surround them, places they’ve visited, or things that they love in the world,” New Scientist magazine quoted Will Andrews of P and G as saying.

In a separate project, the P and G team are also trying to capture the essence of British yachtsman Alex Thomson’s racing yacht.

For those who think that these seem like unusual smells to make into fragrances, the perfumers say that the scents of the future could get even stranger.

“Ingredients in the future will be about the smells that bring comfort for people coupled with some ingredients that are interesting, so people go ‘Ooh, what’s that?’” says Andrews.

He suggests that the smell of warm electronics might resonate with people who have grown up playing computer games. (ANI)

Time to rebuild and regroup in Australian cricket, says Ponting

Perth, Jan. 29 (ANI): Australian cricket captain Ricky Ponting is confident that his team will come up trumps in 2009, but adds that he knows that now is the time to reflect, rebuild and regroup.
In an article for The Australian, Ponting says “As I look around the sporting world, there are all sorts of encouraging signs for the future which give me heart that we will soon be consistently back on the winners’ list again.”

He says that members of the team, current and those likely to come in, can take inspiration from sportspersons like Lance Armstrong, who was racing in the Tour Down Under in his comeback event after three years in retirement.

“No one can argue that the 37-year-old is one of the greatest sportsmen who has ever lived. As a multiple winner of the Tour de France his achievements have been phenomenal. His comeback was huge news and the Tour Down Under was unofficially labelled the “Tour de Lance”, such was the publicity and expectation of his return to road racing,” says Ponting.

Ponting says tennis player Roger Federer is another sportsman one can take inspiration from.

“He had a difficult 2008 battling glandular fever and losing his No1 ranking. After losing the semi-final of the Australian Open and the final at the French Open and Wimbledon there was speculation that he was past his best and on the slide. However, he came back later in the year to win the US Open and after a crushing quarter-final victory yesterday, it would be a brave observer who believes Federer cannot win a record-equalling 14th Grand Slam title,” Ponting says.

“I believe that these sporting analogies apply to the Australian cricket team. We have not been at our best and unfortunately this is partly due to a string of retirements and a spate of injuries. But this has given us a great opportunity to start playing and preparing for the future. We have played a whole lot of new players, including some pretty young guys who will continue to develop into good cricketers,” Ponting says.

“With a new generation coming through, and some of our more experienced guys returning from injury, I firmly believe that Australia can regain its aura,” Ponting says.
“We have used 26 different players in all three forms of the game since the start of the India Test series in October and there have been seven debutants, including David Warner, who is still yet to play a single first-class match.

A little more experience from the young blokes and a few more senior players returning to the team, such as vice-captain Michael Clarke for Friday’s match against South Africa in Perth, can be the difference between success and failure in big matches,” he concludes. (ANI)

The high-powered speedboat was introduced on the overwhelming response from tourists in the state. There are 10 boathouses in the state.

The boathouses at Muttukadu, Mudaliarkuppam, Yercaud, Pitchavaram, Kodaikanal, Ooty, Pykara and Kuttralam have generated revenue of Rupees 772.13 lakh till December 2008, which is 26 per cent more than the revenue for 2007. Among the boathouses, Mudaliarkuppam boathouse, which has 41 boats, has registered a 157 per cent increase in revenue.

The boat racing appears to have caught imagination of the young and the bold. By Arun Kannan (ANI)

Lewis Hamilton prefers pizza to fine dining

London, Jan 20 (ANI): Racing ace Lewis Hamilton has revealed that fine dining at posh restaurants is not his cup of tea – and would rather prefer pizzas.

The Formula 1 star who moved to Switzerland for tax reasons said that he doesn’t like splashing out big bucks at high-class eateries.

“I don’t like fine dining at high-end restaurants. It is very rare I go to these places because they are just not my thing,” The Sun quoted him as saying.

The 24-year-old multimillionaire racer, who is dating Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger, 30, added that he’d rather gorge on a pizza.

Jim Carrey does saucy web dance show for lover Jenny McCarthy

London, Jan 15 (ANI): Comedian Jim Carrey’s lover Jenny McCarthy has revealed that whenever the ‘Yes Man’ star is away from home on shoots, he would perform saucy dance routines for her through the webcam.

McCarthy, 36, says that even though most of 46-year-old Carrey’s moves get the audience laughing, she on the hand finds that his kinky moves sets her pulse racing.

“I haven’t done any dancing, but I make him do that! It’s nice!” the Sun quoted her as telling OK! magazine.

“With the iChat, we’re always afraid that there’s a third party watching! We’re a little bit careful, but it’s a great way to have that face-to-face connection!

“I go online and check him out. I tell him his outfit looks cute!” she added.

The actress also put down the notion that she and Carrey, who are both known for their work in comedy, do not have serious moments in their lives.

“It’s not that we are that funny – like ‘ha, ha, ha’ when we are with each other,” she said.

“I think that’s because we have to do that so often – Jim now more than me. I’m a little more serious now with my work. We talk about real issues,” she added. (ANI)
