Smart people are sexier

Wellington, Sep 2 (ANI): A person’s sex quotient lies in his or her brain, according to a study that suggests that being smart is sexy, and the smartest males get the most partners.

Through a study on Australian birds, a team of researchers have lent support to the idea that our big human brain evolved because it is a sexually attractive organ, not just a useful one.

According to the above theory, signs of intelligence – such as creating art, music, and humour – could have made the brainiest people luckiest in love.

The theory was hugely discussed in the book ‘The Mating Mind’ by an evolutionary psychologist, Geoffrey Miller, almost a decade ago.

Jason Keagy, of the University of Maryland in the US, said that testing the theory in humans was very difficult, and thus he chose to observe satin bowerbirds at Wallaby Creek in NSW instead.

He claimed that Bowerbirds are intelligent.

“But they’re not as complex as humans,” Stuff.co.nz quoted him as saying.

Keagy could get an accurate record of the male birds’ sexual success by videotaping their every movement.

“They can’t really lie to us,” he said.

Known for their fascination with blue objects, bowerbirds have a strong aversion to red.

In the first IQ test, the researchers placed three red objects under a clear plastic container in their bower, and found that the smartest males could remove the cover and carry away the offending objects in 20 seconds.

“It looks pretty simple, but some weren’t able to do it,” said Keagy.

In a second braintwister, he glued a red object down and observed that some bowerbirds kept on trying in vain to pull it out, while the brighter ones quickly twigged this was impossible and covered it with leaves.

The males who failed the plastic container test were spurned.

“No females were mating with them,” said Keagy.

However, the smartest birds attracted up to 20 female partners a season.

“This is the first evidence [in any species] that individuals with better problem-solving abilities are more sexually attractive,” he said.

He claimed that greater intelligence could allow male bowerbirds to woo more females because they can build more elaborate bowers, are better dancers or are more responsive to subtle cues from the females during courtship.

Alternative theories to the mating mind include that our large brain evolved because it was advantageous for hunting or living in social groups, and cultural creativity was simply a fortuitous by-product of the struggle to survive.

The study has been published in the journal Animal Behaviour. (ANI)

Indian fashion designer pays tribute to Michael Jackson

Bangalore, Aug 30 (ANI): A collection inspired by ‘King of Pop’ Michael Jackson left Indian fashion enthusiasts awed in Bangalore.

Showcased by the one of the city’s leading fashion designer, Michelle Salins, the event aptly titled ‘Really Michael Jackson’ was a tribute to the late singer on his 51st birthday.

Comprising of enchanting ensembles in vivid colours, the collection stood out for its glamour quotient.

Gowns, dresses, and traditional outfits such as saris left everyone spellbound.

Connoisseurs of life-style opined that the all white gown with angel wings created by designer Salins was a perfect tribute from Salins to Jackson.

“The theme is ‘really Michael’. We’ve lost such a great entertainer,” said Salins.he show wove its charm and was much appreciated by the audience.

“I though it was really nice, especially the gowns were exceedingly nice and she (Michelle Salins) made some fantastic designs on Michael Jackson. I think it’s a perfect tribute specially on his birthday,” opined cricketer Robin Uthappa, who also walked the ramp.

A police investigation into his death appears to have focused on his use of certain restricted drugs and on the doctors who treated him.

It’s official: way to a man’s heart is through his stomach

Melbourne, June 24 (ANI): A new study has confirmed what many women already knew: men prefer food over sex.

The Australian study asked individuals to rank which everyday experiences give them the most pleasure.

The survey was conducted by Magnum ice-cream and it polled almost 10,000 people across the country.

Males rated taste sensations as their top pleasure trigger, with physical arousal coming in fourth, reports The Courier Mail.

The results were reached through a “pleasure quotient test”.

The test used a scale to determine the frequency and intensity to which individuals are stimulated by certain triggers.

The scale found men gained more pleasure from food, and life in general, more so than their female counterparts.

Private therapist and UniSA adjunct senior lecturer of psychology Dr David Haynes said:

“Women are more into values as a whole and men are into bottom lines and logic – but why that would give one more pleasure from food or from life in general – I can’t imagine.

“From a Freudian perspective, it would be viewed as a man’s regression to childhood, and the boys are being babies, treated by their mothers/wives.” (ANI)

Kids with early attention problems struggle in high school

Washington, May 26 (ANI): A new study by researchers from UC Davis Medical School and Michigan State University has found a link between problems early in school – as early as kindergarten – and lower high school test scores.

“In our study, a child’s inability to pay attention when they start school had the strongest negative effect on how they performed at the end of high school – regardless of their IQ (intelligence quotient),” said lead study author Joshua Breslau, an assistant professor of internal medicine at the UC Davis School of Medicine and a researcher with the UC Davis Center for Reducing Health Disparities.

He suggested that addressing attention problems early in life could keep some children from entering “a downward spiral of failure.”

Breslau and colleagues analysed data on approximately 700 children who were followed from kindergarten (ages 5 through 6) through the end of high school (ages 17 through 18).

It examined the relationship between aggressive, inattentive and depressive behaviours and children’s later performance on standardized high school achievement tests.

The researchers found that inattentiveness in kindergarten was the only behaviour that consistently predicted lower scores on reading and math achievement tests administered more than a decade later.

“Our study shows that early attention problems predict poor performance later in math and reading,” Breslau said.

The study appears online in the June issue of the medical journal Paediatrics. (ANI)

Obama effect: Web-lobbying takes off in India

With the largest democracy of the world going to polls this month, campaigning for the 15th Lok Sabha election has ventured into a new dimension of
web-lobbying. And, the virtual world is not just limited to serious poll business but the fun quotient is also present in the run-up to the election. The trend of using social media to create awareness and promoting candidates and parties is fast catching on in India, this time.

“The trendsetter is definitely Barack Obama. Indian politicians have realized web-lobbying will help them garner more support and a wider base,” said Pulak Barua, product development manager of V-empower, regarding the growing acceptance of web-lobbying in India.

Incidentally, his firm has done web-lobbying for politicians in the UK and the US. In India, V-empower has done that for L K Advani, Renuka Chowdhury and Chandrababu Naidu to name a few. “The popularity is such that we are getting offers for web lobbying from various quarters every single day,” said Barua.

There is a difference though between international political clients and the Indian leaders. “International politicians know their target audience and have the data in place. Initially, politicians here did not want the site and once they get it, they do not use it. In 2004, too, we created a couple of sites but it never picked up because the response from the politicians was poor,” he said.

A French e-lobbying site based on blogs, incidentally, features the forthcoming Indian elections. The website is seeking prospective clients (read politicians) interested in

web-lobbying. Shifting from serious election business, many sites have also come up to create awareness through sheer fun. For instance, citizens can write manifestoes and decide them for the government through http://www.election.lordsofodds.com/! The popular ones get voted by the other members also.

The Hyderabad-based 7Seas Technologies have launched five online games based on the polls. Within a fortnight of its launch, the games have got more than 3 lakh hits. “We had created a game before the US presidential election, which was highly successful. We tried the same this time anticipating similar popularity. Majority of the players are Indian young adults in the age group of 18-20 years,” said Maruthi Sanker, managing director of 7Seas.

Though offers have poured in for ads and web lobbying as part of the online games from various parties, Sanker and his team want to keep it fun-based. While national parties are going all out to make the most of the new phenomenon, the regional ones are yet to get off the blocks. “India still has a long way to go for web lobbying,” said Barua.
