Chavan asked to explain Bachchan”s presence at Mumbai Sea Link function

Mumbai, Mar 25 (ANI): Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan is in hot water over being seen with Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan at the inaugural function of the second phase of Worli-Bandra sealink.

Party sources said that the Congress high command has taken note of Bachchan”s presence and asked for an explanation from Chavan.

Chavan, however, has clarified his stand saying he would have not attended the function, had he known about Bachchan”s presence.

“Amitabh Bachchan is the brand ambassador of another state. We would like to promote our own state. Perhaps, I would not have attended the function had I known he would be present,” said Chavan, adding that there are reports that some people in the Congress are unhappy about his presence.

Mumbai Congress President Kripashankar Singh said, “I want to clarify that neither the Mumbai Congress nor I was consulted before inviting Amitabh Bachchan.”

Amitabh Bachchan is the brand ambassador for Narendra Modi”s Gujarat – and Modi is a political pariah for the party.

Meanwhile, Bachchan on Thursday said the controversy over his presence at the function had been ”manufactured” by the media.

The superstar in his blog wrote: “A fresh controversy has been rapidly manufactured on my involvement. The media has been hounding me since the event at the sea link has got over, through incessant SMSes.”

The function was organised on Wednesday by Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), which falls under the PWD Ministry. (ANI)

We will not let Commonwealth Games suffer: Shiela Dixit

New Delhi, Sep 14 (ANI): A day after the chief of Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) Michael Fennel expressed reservations regarding the completion of work and preparations for the 2010 Commonwealth Games, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dixit on Monday admitted that there was enough room for improvement and it is being taken care of.

“We are monitoring transport carefully, we are also looking for alternatives. But, there may be things we are unable to complete on time. But, the alternatives are being looked after by our PWD (Public Works Department) Minister, our Transport Minister, our power guys, everyone. So, we will not, from our side, let the Commonwealth games to suffer,” Dixit told media after a cabinet meeting in the national capital.

“We are satisfied, but at the same time we are also nervous. There are many things, which we know, have to be done at this time,” Sheila Dixit Delhi CM said.

Fennel has expressed dissatisfaction over the preparations of the Commonwealth Games and has sought Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s intervention in the issue.

Dixit also said that hosting the games was a matter of honour for the nation and Delhi would prove competent in hosting it, but admitted some things might not be complete on time.

She informed that Fennel had visited the Thyagraj stadium and was satisfied with the preparations. He, though, was sceptical regarding the availability of power.

“Mike Fennel did pay me a visit about a month back, he spoke to me about just one thing, he said that, we hope power will be available. So, we said, “yes it would be available”. He had come at a time when there was a power crisis in Delhi. Apart from that, he spoke about Thyagraj, saying that we have been around and we are quite satisfied,” said Dixit.

The CGF General Assembly is due to meet in New Delhi early next month to assess the work a year ahead of the Oct 3-14 games. (ANI)

Kasab trial to begin from April 15

Mumbai, Apr 14 (ANI): The trail of Mohammed Ajmal Kasab, the lone terrorist captured in the Mumbai terror attacks last year, will begin from tomorrow.

The trial will begin at Arthur Road central jail.

On Sunday, Kasab’s trial was put on hold by a week, as the construction of the special court in the jail premises was not yet over.

“The construction of court’s slab is still on and the work is expected to be completed in six to seven days,” special public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam said.

Jail authorities were informed by the Public Works Department (PWD) that the construction work, that began last month, would be over soon.

Only then PWD will be able to hand over the court premises to the jail authorities.
A portion of the jail has been segregated for Kasab’s cell and the court. The authorities have built a bomb-proof tunnel between Kasab’s cell and the court to allow Kasab direct access to the court from the prison.

Earlier TADA court, which conducted the 1993 bomb blast trial, was housed here. (ANI)

Goa ministers splurge taxpayers’ money

Panaji, April 5 (IANS) The Goa government has spent nearly Rs.1.5 crore on food and almost Rs.13 lakhs refurnishing the official residences of three senior ministers and the speaker, according to written replies given by the government to questions raised in the state assembly.

Chief Minister Digambar Kamat threw one party at Eid and another at Christmas. The combined bill came to nearly Rs.11 lakhs, according to one of the replies to a set of questions posed by two legislators – Dayanand Narvekar of the ruling Congress and Vasudev Gaonkar of the Bharatiya Janata Party – during the recent budget session of the assembly.

Kamat also hosted a dinner for historian Romila Thapar and journalist P. Sainath when they were here for a lecture series. The bill for the dinner at a five-star resort came to Rs.244,000, according to a reply in the assembly.

A group of experts was here in September for a seminar on Strategies for Improving Livelihood Security for Rural Poor. Health Minister Vishwajeet Rane treated the delegates to a dinner. The money spent was Rs.310,000, says another reply, adding that the guests also went on an evening cruise on the Mandovi river at the cost of the exchequer.

All the food bills, along with several others which totalled nearly Rs.15 million, were footed by the Arts and Culture Department, which is under the chief minister.

Curtains in the official residence of Home Minister Ravi Naik here cost Rs.123,000 and those in Public Works Department Minister Churchill Alemao’s home Rs.58,036. Two TV sets given to Alemao cost over Rs.100,000.

Assembly Speaker Pratapsing Rane’s liquor cabinet is richer. He bought a wine opener for Rs.875, wine glasses for Rs.800, beer glasses for Rs.200, a set of crystal glasses for Rs.1,000 and cocktail glasses for Rs.1,200, all paid for by the exchequer, says a reply. Add to that a set of bathroom glasses costing Rs.700 each.

All the bills for home furnishings and cutlery were footed by the PWD, along with a host of others, taking the total to almost Rs.1.3 million.

The Goa treasury has an outstanding debt of Rs.50 billion.

Asked if there was a standard procedure or a cap on such expenses, officials in the protocol department of the state government chose not to answer.

Politicians seek divine blessings for polls

Bhopal, April 5 (IANS) With the Lok Sabha polling dates fast approaching, many political heavyweights have descended at the well-known Pitambara Shakti Peeth temple in Madhya Pradesh to seek divine blessings for victory in the elections.

Several candidates in Madhya Pradesh whose tickets have been finalized have started performing religious rituals, including tantrik rites, hoping for success.

‘Most of the tantrik rituals are performed in secret as there is a strong belief that they don’t work if they are performed publicly,’ said a priest.

Several top leaders, including from the Scindia family, arrived a few days ago at Pitambara Peeth, located at the entrance of Datia town near Gwalior, for performing puja.

Prominent among those who arrived include former Rajasthan chief minister Vasundhara Raje and her sister and Gwalior MP Yashodhara Raje Scindia.

Their relative and senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Dhyanendra Singh and his MP wife Maya Singh are also leaving no stone unturned in appeasing the goddess at the Pitambara Peeth.

‘All these leaders have shunned colourful clothes and are dressed in yellow attire. They are not only doing sewa (public service) at the temple but are not eating anything brought from outside. They are surviving only on home-cooked food in order to appease the goddess,’ said an official of the temple trust.

Others who visited the temple include BJP’s Madhya Pradesh president Narendra Singh Tomar, Madhya Pradesh PWD Minister Nagendra Singh, Water Resources Minister Anup Misra, who is the nephew of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, and former minister Narottam Misra, who is contesting against Jyotiraditya Scindia from Guna.

‘They performed pujas to earn the favour of the almighty in the polls either for themselves or their party,’ the official said.

Leaders of the Congress, including Madhya Pradesh party chief Suresh Pachauri, are seeking the blessings of various deities for the success of the party.

‘Pachauri has already visited the Pitambara Peeth during Navratri. His supporters have organised yagnas in the towns of Dwarka and Ujjain though Pachauri’s candidature is yet to be finalized,’ a Congress leader told IANS.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s loyalists are reported to have fanned out to various religious places like the Lord Venkateshwara temple in Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh, the Guruvayur Krishna temple in Thrissur district of Kerala and the Sankat Mochan temple in Varanasi to pray for his victory.

Leaders from other states also visited the Pitambara Peeth. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati’s close aide Satish Chandra Misra and Minister Badshah Singh went to the temple after the announcement of the polls.

‘Candidates of all the parties are performing pujas and yagnas. Most leaders are opting for the Akhand Ramayana Path (recitation of Ramayana for 24 hours) or Durga Saptashati Path (recited for nine days),’ said Pandit Rajesh Sharma.

Some of the aspirants, hoping for sure success, have opted for a special prayer, the Shat Chandi Path, which takes 21 days, said Sharma.

IFS babus booked for not helping district poll officer

THE NAINITAL District Administration has registered cases against six officials including four Indian Forest Service (IFS) officers for not cooperating with the District Election Officer in carrying out the polling preparations for the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections. “A First Information Report has been registered against the six officials for willful disobedience to the administration’s directions pertaining to the ongoing preparations for the forthcoming general elections,” said District Magistrate (DM) Haritash Gulshan, who is also the District Election Officer.

The cases against the officials concerned were registered at the Malli Tal Police station on Wednesday, he said. “The action was initiated after the officials failed to provide the District Election Officer lists of personnel who were to be assigned poll-related duties,” the DM said.

“They failed to respond to the directions despite several reminders,” the DM told HT. The officials against whom the cases have been registered are Executive Engineer, National Highway, Public Works Dept (PWD) (Haldwani), Executive Engineer (PWD) (Ramnagar), Divisional Forest Development Manager (Lalkuan), Divisional Forest Development Manager (Haldwani), Divisional Forest Officer, Terai (East) and Divisional Forest Officer, Terai (Central).

DJB digs and digs, PWD waits… as road vanishes

NEW DELHI: Have you ever driven on a road of which only one half is carpeted? It’s like having half of your car on the sidewalk with the other half
resting on the road. Many commuters in East Delhi are not unfamiliar with this experience since they have been going through it for about one-and-a-half years. And thereby hangs a tale of wanton wastage of public money with virtually no coordination between two government agencies.

This road, known as Narwana Road or Mother Dairy Marg, in Patparganj runs parallel to NH-24 and is a busy stretch of about 2.5 km with many apartments on both sides. The road was, to begin with, in a decrepit state when the Public Works Department decided to strengthen it in August 2007.

Work on one side was completed but had to be called off on the other carriageway in February 2008 when Delhi Jal Board decided to lay new pipelines there following complaints of leakage which led to water accumulating on the road and damaging it. So, a bumpy, uneven road now had an elevated portion running on one side. That was when those using this stretch discovered the thrill of driving with a tilt.

Now, as it happens quite often with work undertaken by Delhi Jal Board, it progressed in fits and starts even as the PWD’s Rs 9-cr project to strengthen the stretch had to wait.

DJB claims their work is now over and it was only because of the rains and later the assembly elections that it got delayed. “The pipes had to be laid four to five feet deep and the process was first delayed due to the monsoon during which DJB could not carry out any work and later due to the assembly elections. However, we have completed our work there and road restoration is taking place now,” said a DJB official who didn’t wish to be quoted.

The PWD doesn’t agree. “The DJB has been carrying out work in a very piecemeal manner. They would dig and re-dig a stretch several times. In fact, some work is still going on near the fire station and there have been more problems of water connections getting affected in some societies,” said the DJB official. Residents too said that there was very little management of work by DJB and they would dig and re-dig several times.

In fact, now the PWD is facing the usual problems associated with delayed projects. “We have to float fresh tenders now since the present contractor does not want to continue working there due to the increased construction and labour costs due to the delays,” said a senior PWD official. And though some work has started, the process will take another two months now, he said, and add Rs 3 crore to what was originally a Rs 9 crore project. And then the rains may once again stall work.

Meanwhile, the residents can only pray. Said L K Bhatia, a resident of Konark Apartments: “The road was in a bad condition before DJB took on the work. However, with constant digging, the road became a nightmare to drive on.”

Added Manshul Sinha, a resident of Press Apartment: “Due to the shoddy job done by DJB our water supply has been disrupted. The side of Narwana Road which has not been made for over a year now is so uneven that accidents happen there regularly. The government agencies are blaming each other for the mess but we are the ones who have to suffer this despite paying our taxes.”

EC pipes down to ‘only living’, too late for CM

day after he angrily described as “absurd” an Election Commission directive against displaying any posters or pictures of political figures in government offices, Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee today piped down and ordered the removal of all his 24 photographs displayed at the photo gallery in front of his office.

The CM’s order came even before an EC clarification could reach the Writers’ Buildings, in which the Commission has said its earlier directive was only about the photographs of living political functionaries. “The Commission has respect for great national leaders. Their pictures can remain there,” Chief Electoral Officer Debashis Sen said.

While the CM was quick to get his all 24 posters in the gallery outside his office removed in the morning itself, his Cabinet colleagues could not care less.

The photographs of former chief minister Jyoti Basu, adorning the offices of Minister for Sports and Transport Subhas Chakraborty and Minister for Fisheries Kiranmoy Nanda remained in their places.

This apart, almost all the ministers have their photographs shot during some government function and displayed in their chambers. For example, there are five photographs of Minister for Commerce and Industries Nirupam Sen displayed in his room. Minister for Jails and Social Welfare Biswanath Choudhury and PWD minister Kshiti Goswamy also have their pictures displayed in their respective chambers.

Chief Secretary Asok Mohan Chakrabarti said in the evening that the government had not received any clarification from the EC.

Meanwhile, the ministers are biding their time. “We are waiting for the clarification. In fact, I have already checked with the chief secretary’s office. If any directive comes for removal of my photographs, I will do that,” Goswamy said. At the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, photos of the present Mayor Bikash Bhattacharya and that of former Mayors Subrata Mukherjee and Prasanta Chatterjee remained on the walls. “We are not removing them unless we get a clear order,” Bhattacharya said.

Tamil schools in Malaysia to get RM 130 million

Putrajaya (Malaysia), Apr.2 (ANI): The Malaysian Education Ministry has said that it will allocate RM 130 million for Tamil schools through the Public Works Department (PWD) as it is the most effective method.

The country’s Education Minister Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said the allocation was from the economic stimulus package, and therefore, all projects must be completed by the end of the year.

“We want to do it in the quickest way possible and the PWD has the necessary expertise,” he said after Deputy Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak presented the allocation to Tamil school representatives from several states at the ministry.

Hishammuddin said the ministry was disbursing the allocation through the PWD as not all schools had boards of governors.

In an immediate response, Tamil School Headmasters Association general secretary M.S. Muthiah said he was thankful for the allocation. (ANI)

Tamil Indians forced to vacate termite-infested school in Malaysia

Johor Baru, Mar 17 (ANI): Some 500 pupils in a Tamil school in Malaysia here forced to vacate it after it was infested with termites.

The Star quoted Parents-Teachers Association chairman M. Chandran as saying that the Public Works Department (PWD) had issued notices to vacate three of the four school blocks. The beams in some of the blocks were bending and that there were also several leakages,” he added.handran further said the school had received an RM1.five mil allocation from the education ministry in 2007 for a new four-storey building, which could accommodate 30 rooms but the project was halted after an increase in the prices of construction materials late last year.

Meanwhile, State Unity, Human Resources, Science, Technology and Innovation Committee chairman M. Asojan has said that the new building construction could be carried out once the education ministry agrees to increase the allocation to RM 2.8mil. (ANI)

DMK seeks Congress party’s intervention on Lanka issue

New Delhi, Feb 18 (ANI): A Dravida Munnettra Kazhagam delegation on Wednesday met Congress president Sonia Gandhi and sought India’s intervention in stopping the killing of civilians in Sri Lanka.

Tamil Nadu’s PWD Minister Duraimurugan led the delegation and discussed the current situation in the island nation.

The DMK team also asked the Centre to approach the United Nations to investigate the situation in Sri Lanka’s Tamil-dominated northern region and asked for the deployment of an international peace keeping force in Sri Lanka to maintain peace.

“She (Gandhi) assured us that the government will do whatever it can in this issue,” Duraimurugan told reporters after the meeting.

External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Sonia’s political adviser Ahmed Patel were also present at the meeting.

On Tuesday, the delegation submitted a memorandum to President Pratibha Patil. (ANI)
