Terror date 13 points to role of Indian Mujahideen and Lashkar

NEW DELHI: Despite lack of a prior warning or heightened threat assessment of a terror attack, the date of the latest Mumbai attack has focused the attention of security agencies on the hand of the jihadi group Indian Mujahideen (IM), given the Lashkar-linked outfit's penchant for striking on the 13th and 26th days of a month.

The IM, acting in consort and at the behest of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT), is the likely suspect with its network of sleeper cells and sympathizers. Once again, as has been the case often in the past, a terrorist attack has happened on 13th.

Sustained questioning of arrested IM members, including those who willingly collaborated after being held, has failed to resolve the enigma of the dates even though they add up to compelling evidence.

Consider these events:

* May 13, 2008: Terror hit Jaipur with six serial blasts rocking crowded areas, killing nearly 50.

*July 26, 2008: Ahmedabad hit by a series of 21 blasts that killed 57.

*September 13, 2008: A series of six synchronized blasts in Delhi killed around 30.

*November 26, 2008: 10 LeT terrorists killed almost 187 in the worst ever attack on Mumbai over three days.

*February 13, 2010: A terrorist attack at the German Bakery in Pune left 17 dead.

The dates cannot be a coincidence, and are a strong indicator that IM, whose leaders continue to plan and train in Pakistan, might be the hand behind the mayhem.

Indian agencies have been aware of the importance of these dates, although nobody has yet been able to crack the reason why 13 and 26 are the chosen days. In their investigations over the years, agencies have questioned many IM operatives who have been arrested.

The planning and execution of the blasts also bears the signature of the LeT backed group even though no email claiming responsibility has been reported as yet. The blasts were high intensity and the crowded locale of a neighbourhood like Zaveri Bazaar points to the IM.

Aware of the dates, agencies have stepped up vigilance and paid greater attention to terrorist chatter intercepts around these two days. Despite that, sources said, th

ere was no inkling of any impending terror attack.

This year, there is an added ironic twist to these dates: Indian and Pakistani foreign ministers are expected to sit down for important talks on July 26. There was also buzz on the internet — subsequently found to be incorrect — that Ajmal Kasab's, birthday is on July 13.

Intelligence agencies say IM is part of LeT's so-called “Karachi Project”, which uses fugitive Indian jihadis and run by former Pakistan armymen to keep up the terror pressure on India. This not only keeps India off balance, it also increases the deniability factor for Pakistan because IM operatives by and large are in India. The project, revealed by David Headley to the FBI interrogators, has also been linked to Huji in the past. Headley, for instance, was in close touch with Ilyas Kashmiri of Huji. Headley also said IM leaders, Riaz and Iqbal Bhatkal, were living under the protection of the LeT in Karachi.

All metropolitan cities across the country and coastal areas were immediately put on high alert after the serial blasts. The home ministry asked states to deploy additional security personnel at all crowded public places and directed immigration authorities to step up security checks.

Union home minister P Chidambaram, who held an emergency meeting to take stock of the situation immediately after the blasts, said the Mumbai serial blasts were a “coordinated attack by terrorists”.

Chidambaram said the explosions occurred within minutes of each other from 6.45pm and from this it can be inferred it is a “coordinated attack” by terrorists. Stating about post-blast action, the home minister said the National Security Guard (NSG) hub in Mumbai has been put on standby and that the elite force's 'post-blast' team has also been sent to the financial capital of the country. The Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) team from both New Delhi and Hyderabad has been sent to Mumbai, he added.

Prime Minister Manmohan, who was also monitoring the developments related to the three explosions, spoke to Chidambaram as also Maharashtra chief minister Prithviraj Chavan.

Pawar should resign immediately: BJP

New Delhi, June 4 (ANI): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday accused former BCCI President and Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar of misrepresenting facts on IPL bidding and demanded that he should resign immediately.

Addressing mediapersons here, Party spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad said: “Sharad Pawar has mismanaged the food inflation as well as the cricket too, and he should step down from the post.

He said that City Corporation”s MD had bid for the IPL Pune team, was a false claim by Pawar, and added that he should answer that why he mislead the country by giving wrong information.

He further demanded for probe in the IPL Pune”s bidding process.

A newspaper report on Friday said Pawar family owned 16 per cent stake in City Corporation, a Pune company that the report claimed had bid for an IPL team in March this year.

Earlier, Pawar dismissed reports of his family”s involvement in the bid for IPL franchisees.

He rubbished a newspaper report linking his family to the IPL bid.

Talking to reporters here, Pawar said: “Neither I nor my family is involved with any IPL team or with the bidding process.”

“Whatever has been reported in the newspaper today was reported two months back also. At that time also I explained my position, which remains the same now. Neither me nor my family has direct or indirect involvement in any IPL team or in the bidding process,” he added.

He also reiterated that the IPL is clean and that there is nothing murky about the ownership patterns and financial transactions in the league.

“The government agencies are inquiring and anyone who has done anything wrong, will be punished,” he added. (ANI)

Congress fields Dutt, Dalwai

Mumbai, May 29 — The Congress on Friday ended an impasse over its official nominees for the State Legislative Council elections. It has repeated one retiring member.

Two are new, one of them a woman. State unit general secretary Sanjay Dutt, who will complete his six-year term this month, has been given another chance.

A Muslim face and party spokesperson Hussain Dalwai and Pune’s ex-mayor Dipti Chaudhari also got Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s approval. The party has tried to please all sections of the voter base, as well as the numerous factions within the party.

Dutt is a loyalist who spends more time in organisational work. Ex-minister Dalwai moved to the Congress from the Samajwadi Party seven years ago, then worked as the party’s state vice-president.

Chaudhari is a close confidant of Pune Member of Parliament Suresh Kalmadi. She belongs to the Other Backward Class’s Mali caste, which, despite its larger presence in the region, has inadequate representation in the Congress’s Legislature benches.

The Congress leadership did not declare the name of the fourth seat that it wants to contest in the polls to be held on June 7. Candidates for the Rajya Sabha polls to be held on June 17 will be declared later.

The Congress is poised to contest two of the six RS seats that will be elected by State Legislative Assembly members, who will also vote in the Council polls.

Face-recognition software helped cops zero in on Bakery suspect

Images generated using a face-recognition software, combined with careful study of CCTV visuals from Pune’s German Bakery where a bomb exploded on February 13 and comparison with photographs of suspects, helped police zero in on Abdul Samad Mohammed Zarrar alias Abdul Samad Bhatkal. The younger brother of Yasin Bhatkal alias Ahmed Mohammed Zarrar is the susptected planter of the bomb.

Abdul Samad was arrested by the Maharashtra ATS on Monday morning when he arrived from Dubai at Mangalore airport after a three-month visit to the UAE that had begun 10 days after the Pune blast.

He was remanded in police custody until June 1 by a Metropolitan Magistrate’s court for his alleged involvement in a little known case of 2009. He was booked under various sections of the Arms Act and the ATS made no mention of the bomb blast in the remand application.

But the Press Information Bureau issued a statement quoting Union Home Minister P Chidambaram as complimenting the ATS, Pune Police and Central agencies for apprehending Abdul Samad, “prime suspect behind the German Bakery blast”.

Inside the courtroom in Mazgaon, ATS officials furnished documents relating to a 2009 arms case in which Abdul Samad was a “wanted accused”.

Three alleged Chhota Shakeel men — Haji Imran, Suleiman Mehmood alias Katela and Afzal Shaikh alias Lala — who were arrested on August 5, 2009 had alleged that Abdul Samad was the man who supplied them three Chinese-made revolvers in Bangalore. The weapons were seized from the trio outside Sadanand Hotel in Mazgaon.

ATS officials, however, confirmed that Abdul Samad would be questioned on the Bhatkal links to the Pune blast. A Pune ATS team probing the blast has left for Mumbai.

“We suspect that Samad planted the bomb at the German Bakery. He was identified through CCTV footage obtained from a camera installed inside the bakery,” an officer said. A police informer from Bhatkal, sources claimed, had also identified the man in the CCTV footage.

Family members have denied this allegation, claiming they had evidence of Abdul Samad attending a wedding around the same time.

“We are producing witnesses who have seen Abdul Samad at his cousin’s wedding celebrations the whole week,” said Mohammed Ali, his paternal uncle.

Grainy images of the side profile of a suspect picked up from the closed circuit camera over the cashier’s counter at the bakery were enhanced using software that generates frontal images from side profiles, the sources said.

“Footage from the CCTV in Pune provided only the side profiles of a suspect believed to have planted the bomb. An effort was made by investigators to find software that can provide full face images from just side profiles. This helps narrow down the search to a great extent,” a senior official said.

The images generated using the face recognition software helped zero-in on Abdul Samad. In the initial phase of the probe, investigators had zeroed-in on the older Zarrar brother, known to be a key member of the Indian Mujahideen outfit that carried out a series of blasts across the country between 2007 and 2008, as the prime suspect.

In 2008, Abdul Samad had been investigated by police for a possible support role in terrorist acts of the Indian Mujahideen while he was a student in Bangalore but was let-off since there was no evidence of involvement. His brother remains untraced.

On his return to Bhatkal, Abdul Samad was called for a counselling session by police. He told police that his brother Ahmed was in touch with the family for a year after he went underground — he had called them from Dubai where he apparently worked as a salesperson in a shop in Al Ras.

A police officer said Abdul Samad came with his family and sat through the session “passively”, “occasionally nodding” to the advice that was being offered.

Senior officials who sat through the meeting gave “a good lecture” for over 30 minutes on how he should stay away from “the lines of Indian Mujahideen” and not follow the steps of Ahmed and his accomplices Riyaz and Iqbal. “He never argued. Only paid attention and left the station soon after the talk was over,” an officer recalled.

BCCI puts Team India sponsorship up for grabs

With its deal with Sahara coming to an end next month, the BCCI on Monday invited bids from companies through a tender notice for sponsoring four Indian squads, including the much sought-after men’s outfit.

The tender notice, issued by BCCI secretary N Srinivasan, called for firms to bid for sponsorship of the men’s, women’s, India A and India under 19 teams, indicating the documents would be available from May 24 for a non-refundable payment of Rs 5 lakh.

It said all bidders need to fulfill the eligibility criteria set up by the Board as well as other requirements as mentioned in the bid document.

Submission of the bids also has to be done as per conditions outlined, the Board also reserved its rights “to cancel or amend the entire bidding process at any stage and to reject any and/or all bids without providing any reasons, including calling for a re-tender.”

BCCI’s deal with existing sponsors Sahara is set to come to a close next month.

Sahara, which has supported the Indian team for several years as its main sponsor, recently bid successfully for the new Pune IPL franchise for a staggering Rs 1700 crore.

Sahara will review its sponsorship to the Indian cricket team, Group chief Subroto Roy had said after winning the IPL franchise bid on March 23.

Sahara had bagged the sponsorship for the Indian cricket team for Rs 400 crore for a four-year period ending December 2009, and had agreed to continue for six more months as BCCI could not find any sponsors.

“No, it will not. Only thing we will see is our continuation of sponsorship to the Indian cricket team. We will sit on that and we will discuss on that. But on all other sports nothing will be affected,” Roy had said on the impact of the Group’s aggressive bidding to acquire the IPL’s Pune franchise.

Asserting that the Group, which is also sponsoring the Indian hockey team, would seriously consider (limiting) exposure to the BCCI and the women’s cricket, he said then that the Group “will take a conscious decision about it.”

Old tournament embraces new format

It was a matter of choice, either continue living up to its purist legacy or to make a brand new and colourful start. Sheesh Mahal, India’s longest running and richest prize-money cricket tournament eventually decided to go the glamorous way.

In its 57th edition — which will commence at the end of the month — the prestigious event will show-off it’s new Twenty20 format, shedding the red-ball-white-clothes image it has donned since inception in 1951. But more than just keeping pace with the changing times, sponsors Sahara, who revived the tournament in 2006 with monetary incentives of Rs 25 lakhs, has reinvented the format to use the tournament as a platform to identify players for its new IPL franchise, Sahara Pune Warriors, ahead of a fresh IPL player auction later this year.

The big names of Team India, rested for the Zimbabwe series, are all expected to be seen in action during the May 31-June 5 eight-team event in Lucknow and will also serve as a form-guide for injured and fringe players for Asia Cup selection.

“The tournament will provide an excellent platform for players to show their potential and be a part of the Sahara Pune Warriors side in the IPL and that was one of the reasons why we decided to adapt to the T20 format. Also, when we tried to hold it last year, we realised that there was no space in the domestic calendar, and all the prominent players were busy,” Abhijit Sarkar, head of corporate communications, Sahara India Pariwar told The Sunday Express.

“We wanted the best players to be playing in it. Time remains a constraint this time too, but T20 helps get on with things. Plus, we have to accept that cricket looks attractive in coloured clothing and under lights,” Sarkar added.

The evolution of Sheesh Mahal has seen the format reducing by days. It was first played over three days, then in a two-day format, followed by a 40-over a side event before becoming T20 from this year. The change of format and IPL talent scout programme has the present crop excited about the fresh opportunities coming their way. But India’s former cricketers have expressed their reservations about overwhelming influence of IPL and T20 cricket.

“It’s doing great damage,” said former Test cricketer Madan Lal. “Back in our days, a good performance in Sheesh Mahal opened doors for national selection. Such was the competition and stature of the tournament.”

Specially-abled girl participates in paragliding event in Pune

Pune, May 11 (ANI): A specially-abled girl, Chandrakala Dahare, hailing from Pune, went paragliding at a height of 150 feet.

A student of Kantilal Khivsara College in the city, Dahare owes her paragliding experience to her instructor Anand Munje.

Under Munje”s supervision, Dahare flew from Bavdhan Tila (hillock) on Monday.
Describing her experience, Dahare said she had never done anything like that before.

“These people came and showed me some videos on the CD player, about how to do paragliding. I felt very nice after watching that video I thought I should give it a try. I have never attempted such a thing in the past so I decided to come here and give it a try,” said Dahare.

Munje took special precautionary measures like extra padding so that Dahare did not sustain any kind of injury.

“Already she is having one disability and in that case nobody would like to have another disability in addition to that. So, obviously, I had to ensure that she does not have any injury of whatever kind. So taking that into consideration, I selected summer season. We just got very good wind conditions and I attached additional padding and sleeping bag at her back, so that in case she falls she won”t get injured,” said Munje. (ANI)

Spicejet plane makes emergency landing in Kolkata after alleged terror scare

Kolkata, May 5 (ANI): A Spicejet plane made an emergency landing at Kolkata Airport on Wednesday following a terror scare.

Initial reports quoted airport officials as saying that two male passengers traveling on the Pune-Delhi-Kolkata SG-203 flight were overheard discussing a hijacking plan.

Flight crew said one of the suspicious males was dressed as a woman.

The plane made a priority landing in Kolkata and was taken to an isolated spot. The two suspects were taken off the aircraft and handed over to the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) for interrogation. Further details are awaited. (ANI)

Videocon Chairman ignores query on IPL bid

New Delhi, April 21 (ANI): Videocon Chairman Venugopal Dhoot on Wednesday avoided questions asking for missing documents related to his company’s Indian Premier League bid here.

Replying to one such query, after attending a seminar on Energy Options for Telecom Sector, Dhoot said: “I don””t know. I woke up and came to attend this seminar. I have not read today””s newspaper… I don””t know even if it is two days old story, I was out of country for last two days, so I am not aware of them.”

A media report had suggested that Dhoot was in possession of the document and is ready to provide it to authorities, if asked.

But Dhoot refused to comment on that as well.

Meanwhile, during another raid in Mumbai city, income tax (IT) sleuths digging into IPL papers have failed to locate two vital documents — the bid papers of the Videocon and Adani Groups, whose failure to win teams for Pune and Ahmedabad is said to be at the root of the IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi – former Union Minister of State for External Affairs Minister Shashi Tharoor row.

Sleuths of IT department have said the absence of the documents could leave a crucial hole in the probe.

The missing files could settle one way or the other the widespread perception that the first round of bidding on March 7 in Mumbai for the two new IPL teams was tweaked to favour Dhoot and Adani.

These documents are also an important ””missing link”” in the controversy surrounding the IPL that has so far cost the Central Government its minister.

Ahead of his resignation, Tharoor had said that many “powerful people” were upset at the Kochi team””s unexpected victory in the IPL auction.

Modi””s tweets questioning the ownership of the Kochi consortium was under pressure from these “powerful people” who wanted the team to go elsewhere, Tharoor had suggested.

The recovery of the original bid documents should settle the controversy about those who were behind these losing bids. (ANI)

Saya Date of Pune has a date with film production

Pune, Sep 14 (ANI): Saya Date, a teenage girl from Pune has scripted, directed and produced a 50-minute video feature film.

‘On The Other Line,’ an English language film based on the darker side of social networking websites, depicts the dangerous consequences of excessive Internet chatting.

Saya and her friends used the streets of Pune and their homes as location so as to lower the cost of production, which was a mere 5,000 rupees .

Saya, who has not received professional training, used handycam and battery operated lights for shooting and editing was carried out on a PC.

“When I was ten years old a camera was gifted to me on my birthday and I used to record my friends and family and compile them on the software. My family used to praise that and me is how my interest developed in this field. This is my second film for which I have written the script,” said Saya Date.

Saya’s mom, who has media background, taught her the basics of editing and camerawork.”She has an interest in so many things, she is very hard working. Once she puts her mind into something nothing can stop her. So when she got a camera I taught her little bit of basic editing in Windows Media Maker. She developed the skill by making different movies for the family, school, teachers and projects. She developed this skill on her own,” said Reeta Date.

Rashmi, who plays the lead role in the film, says it was very hard to portray the character named ‘Trisha.’

“I have never taken acting seriously though I have participated in the school plays for four years after which I completely stopped acting. I have helped Saya a lot in writing the script, so while writing I found lots in common with the character. We did not have much choice for the auditions as everybody was mostly trying out for the other character Alisha. Not many people were ready to try out for the role of Trisha because it is not an easy role to play,” said Rashmi.

‘On The Other Line’ was premiered at the city’s National Film Archives auditorium on Sunday. (ANI)

Oxford University in land-grabbing row for its Indian campus

London, Aug 30 (ANI): Oxford University’s first overseas campus in India, which is going to be set up in Lavasa near Pune, has been embroiled in a land grabbing row, with accusations of human rights violations against the land developers.

Oxford’s outgoing vice-chancellor, John Hood, has been a strong backer of the Lavasa venture, described by the university as its first overseas campus.

Oxford has struck a preliminary deal with Ajit Gulab-chand, chairman of the company that controls Lavasa, to endow a chair at the Said Business School in Oxford for a reported 7.4 million pounds, The Times reported.

The Indian developers of the 12,500-acre Lavasa site have been accused of forcing farmers into selling their land and of pressing them to accept low prices. They have also been accused of worsening deforestation by cutting down millions of trees.

Medha Patkar, a human rights activist at the forefront of villagers’ campaign, described Lavasa as a “land grab”.

“People are threatened … made to feel like criminals. They cannot survive there unless they submit so they sell their land for the prices offered. They are continually asking them to leave. They say, ‘Give away your land, give away your land’.”

Oxford plans to offer courses for Indian executives in an education centre in Lavasa, a privately managed city modelled on hill stations built during the British rule,The Times reported.

Lavasa is to be home to 200,000 middle-class Indians and include resorts, educational and sports facilities including a golf course designed by Nick Faldo. The first of its four settlements, Dasve, is due to open next year.

Oxford will not offer degrees in the planned 15-20 million pounds education center, but Rajgopal Nogja, president of Lavasa Corporation, said he hoped 5,000 students would study there in its first five years.

He said Lord Patten, Oxford’s chancellor, had been enthusiastic about the plan in a visit two years ago. “It’s going to be the best building in my city, timeless architecture for the best university in the world,” the paper quoted Nogja, as saying. (ANI)
