Tonight the Sci Fi Channel (now SyFy) features the Essex County Hospital on Ghost Hunters. The Essex County Hospital is the location of the live Halloween Ghost Hunter special tonight.

The Essex County Hospital Center was a county hospital located in the Township of Cedar Grove, New Jersey. The hospital was used to house mentally ill patients that are in need of care.

In 1896, a large portion of land was purchased by the City of Newark, New Jersey; the land was bought to build a new mental institution, known as Overbrook. During the late 1800s and early 1900s, many buildings were built that housed mental patients and other facilities, such as a power house, laundromat, and theater.

In 2007, Essex County finally closed the hospital and decided to convert the grounds into a 90-acre (360,000 m2) county park instead of the originally planned construction of houses. Several buildings at the southern end of the site were demolished in late 2008.

Before the demolition, the hospital was featured on the TV show Ghost Adventures and Ghost Hunters, the latter of which came to the conclusion that the building was indeed haunted by the spirits of those tormented souls who had suffered within its confines. In late 2006, the new Essex County Hospital Center opened just down the road from the site of the original Overbrook Hospital. This hospital center houses chronically ill psychiatric patients in need of longer lengths of stay than are available in community hospitals and medical centers. The new hospital center takes a cutting edge approach to behavioral health care, and its layout and programs stand in stark contrast to the hundred year old facility it replaced. The new hospital is located at 204 Grove Avenue in Cedar Gro.

The hospital was filmed on the movie, Choke.
In 2008, the hospital was featured on the documentary television show, Ghost Adventures, which airs on the Travel Channel.
In 2009, the hospital was featured on Ghost Hunters on Syfy.
In 2009, on Halloween the hospital was featured on Ghost Hunters Live on Syfy.

Narcotics have irreversible effect on the mentally ill

Washington, Feb 6 (ANI): A new study has found that drugs can have an adverse impact on the brains of people suffering from mental illness.

According to Dr. Stephane Potvin of the Universite de Montreal affiliated Centre de recherche Fernand-Seguin at the Louis-H Lafontaine Hospital, nearly 33 to 50 percent of psychiatric patients also suffer from drug addiction.

The drug consumption leads to deterioration of cerebral structures.

“They become dependant more quickly and they tend to abuse drugs more easily. It is evident that drug use can worsen the symptoms of mental disease,” said Potvin.

“The odds that a mental disorder manifests itself in an individual can increase if he or she consumes drugs,” he added.

The study also showed that people suffering from mental illness, specifically schizophrenia, are more sensitive to the effects of drugs.

The findings were presented at the conference at the Louis-H Lafontaine Hospital this week. (ANI)
