Tractor thief runs out of luck after 20 strikes

Gandhinagar, March 16 (IANS) Ramesh Prajapati’s specialization bordered on the unconventional. And quite like the protagonist in Bollywood movie ‘Oye Lucky, Lucky Oye’ he stole vehicles with ease, the only difference being his preference for tractors over swanky sets of wheels.

This 34-year-old made a fortune out of stealing tractors in Gujarat and selling them off in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. All he needed was a little help from an accomplice who dismantled the stolen vehicles, gave them a new look and drove them into other states.

Prajapati’s tally of stolen tractors was 20 when he ran out of luck and fell in the police net: The cost he had to pay for being over adventurous and striking too close to a police post.

A school dropout from a family of potters, Prajapati was picked up and taken to Vejalpur police station near Ahmedabad for questioning March 13 after a tractor went missing from it’s jurisdiction.

During questioning, the tractor thief from Zeera town of Unjha in north Gujarat confessed to stealing 20 tractors from the peripheral areas of Ahmedabad and other parts of north Gujarat.

‘This could well be the tip of the proverbial iceberg and we may get links to more such thefts,’ said Inspector J.M. Bharwad, who is investigating the case. Prajapati has been taken on a five-day police remand till March 18.

According to the police, Prajapati’s last tractor theft was from just behind the Vejalpur police post. This came soon after his strike outside a crematorium in Siddhpur while the owner was mourning inside.

Elton John tells Whoopi Goldberg ‘Next Fall’ reflects his coming out struggle

London, Mar 13 (ANI): Sir Elton John has revealed on Whoopi Goldberg’s chat show The View that his new play, ‘Next Fall’, reflects some of the struggles he had coming out as gay.

John, 62, produced the play, which is a bittersweet comedy that opened on Broadway on March 12, with his partner David Furnish.

It was written by Geoffrey Nauffts, and tells the story of a gay couple, one of whom hasn’t come out as gay to his parents and struggles with the conflict with his religion.

John told Goldberg, 54, that he could totally identify with the troubled protagonist.

“I came out…at the height of my career and, yeah, it maybe hurt me a little bit but not that much and it gave me the freedom to be who I was for the rest of my life and I didn’t have to live my life in secret,” the Mirror quoted him as saying.

“I’m proud of who I am. The worst thing is to just hide and be afraid of who you are.

“I didn’t really want people to know. I didn’t have the courage in my convictions and I think as soon as I did that – when I was asked a simple question in a magazine and I said ‘yes’ – my life transformed itself.

“I don’t have any secrets now. I know it is very difficult for lots of people in different jobs but the best thing I ever did was be true to myself,” he added. (ANI)

Kids in modern Britain living in ‘Dickensian poverty’

London, September 10 (ANI): Kids in the UK receive no better treatment than what orphan Oliver Twist endured in Charles Dickens’s novel, a teacher has claimed.

Lesley Ward alleged students attended school unable to dress themselves, use cutlery or even use the toilet, mirroring the plight of Twist, the child protagonist born into a life of poverty and misfortune in a workhouse.

The president of the Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL) said parents were less likely to pay attention to children’s education due to the strain of living in poor conditions.

“That’s shocking isn’t it?” the Daily Star quoted her as saying.

“You go out to work, perhaps two or even three part-time jobs, and you are still living below the poverty line. Life mirroring the times of Dickens.

“Shared poverty gives rise to shared attitudes, which make learning difficult. Attitudes like: ‘Why should he stay at school? I didn’t and I manage’,” she added. (ANI)

The film starring Kareena Kapoor, Salman Khan and Sohail Khan is a simple ordinary story set in a contemporary fashion.

Targeted at the youth, the film also deals with the issues surrounding career over love which is one of the main reasons for an unstable marriage in today’s time.

“It is an original film with original storyline. Coming from close people of mine, family friends. So it’s sketched from there. So its completely original, no similarity whatsoever,” said Prem Soni, director.

So it’s a journey of a girl’s life and after marriage, after she gets married to Samir, how she makes a friend and what happens. For me it was a contemporary idea and an interesting role for me,” said Kareena.

New Delhi, Aug. 28 (ANI): The star cast of the upcoming Bollywood film ‘Mohandas’ visited Rajghat, the memorial of Father of Nation Mahatma Gandhi here on Friday.

The movie is the directorial debut of cinematographer Mazhar Kamran who has been part of the creative teams of famous Bollywood films such as ‘Satya’ and ‘Jhankar Beats’.

Star of Oscar winning documentary lives in an impoverished condition

Rampur (UP), July 8 (ANI): Despite all claims and promises made to improve her life, Pinki Sonkar, protagonist of the short documentary ‘Smile Pinki’, which won an Oscar, continues to live in stark poverty in her village, Rampur.

Unlike stars of Slumdog millionaire, Azharrudin Ismail and Rubina Ali, who received all the media attention and recently houses in Mumbai, Pinki is living a miserable life.

Pinki is still deprived of basic amenities including education.

“Earlier, there were lot of talk that she will get lot of money as she has come after winning. We didn’t get a penny. We are still living in the same conditions. We didn’t get any benefits. People said that Rajendra’s fortune will change but nothing has changed,” said Rajendra Sonkar, father of Pinki.

Local leaders and filmakers, who once thronged her village and promised financial support, are not to be found anywhere.

Pinki’s family wants that someone should come forward to support them.

“We want that there should be a change in our condition and we should get some facilities. But our condition is like earlier. What’s the use of bringing so much of fame for the village (Rampur) when there is no change in our condition?,” said Shimla Devi, Pinki’s mother.

Pinki is the star of the short documentary “Smile Pinki”, which won an Academy Award.

The 39-minute poignant film, by U.S.-based filmmaker Megan Mylan, recounts how the girl, born into a poor family and with a cleft lip, is taken by a social worker to a hospital that provides free surgery to fix the deformity for thousands of children each year.

Pinki was once an outcast in her village, where deformities are not understood, but she was accepted into the community after the surgery. (ANI)

Sony invites wrath of Hindus by releasing “Hanuman: Boy Warrior”

Sony Corporation has inadvertently invited the wrath of many Hindu groups by releasing its new video console game “Hanuman: Boy Warrior” for its PlayStation2. The Hindus from many parts of the world are feeling hurt and angry that Sony has used the Hindu god as the protagonist in the video game.

Hindus have launched protest movements against Sony, demanding the immediate removal of the video game from the market. The US and Australia-based Hindu groups have started online protest campaign against Sony.

“Hindus in Australia and USA have started this movement and posted their requests on the web. Till this time, there has been no direct communication with the said groups and we haven’t received any intimation from them officially,” said SCEE (Sony Computer Entertainment Europe) PlayStation country manager Atindriya Bose.

The protesting Hindu groups are not only demanding the removal of the video game from the market, but are also seeking an apology from Sony. According to Rajan Zed, the president of Universal Society of Hinduism, Sony’s video game “trivializes the highly revered deity of Hinduism”. According to Vamsi Krishna of Sanatan Sanstha (Australia), it is “very disrespectful, disgraceful and an insult to all those devotees of Lord Hanuman and followers of Hindu dharma.”

Vamsi Krishna has stated that this video game should be removed from the market, with immediate effect, before it causes further unrest in the Hindu community worldwide and Sony should offer serious apology to the Hindus.

According to Bhavna Shinde of Forum for Hindu Awakening, the use of “sacred figure from Hinduism, namely, the Hindus’ revered Deity, Sree Hanuman, as a character in a video game is highly objectionable to us, Hindus worldwide.” She has demanded that Sony should “withdraw this video game, “Hanuman: Boy Warrior” at the earliest, and publish an apology to the Hindu community and Hanuman devotees worldwide.” She has requested the video game distributors and vendors to exclude “Hanuman: Boy Warrior”.

On the contrary, according to Bose, “Hanuman: Boy Warrior” is appealing to the Indian Hindu audiences. When Mr. Bose was asked that what was Sony planning to do in response to the Hindu protests, Bose replied, “Since we are not aware of their exact point of objection, we are in no position to comment on our plan of action. However, we are keeping a tab of the situation and hope to resolve it soon.”

“Hanuman: Boy Warrior” is the game owned by Sony Computer Entertainment Europe’s (SCEE). It is the first game that Sony has released in Hindi and English languages. It is available for Rs 499.
