India as a rising power good for the US: Obama

Washington, June 4 (ANI): In witty and often rousing remarks at a Thursday reception hosted by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for her Indian counterpart S M Krishna at the State Department, US President Barack Obama reiterated how central and important India was to the US.

“It””s rising power and a responsible global power. That””s why I firmly believe that the relationship between the United States and India will be a defining partnership in the 21st century,” Obama said.

Obama described the India-United States relationship as “fundamentally unique” because of their common interests and common values,

Washington, he said valued the partnership “not because of where India is on a map, but because of what we share and where we can go together.”

“India is indispensable to the future that we seek – a future of security and prosperity for all nations,” Obama said.

The President was in a particularly jocular vein with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, subtly challenging her hold on the India portfolio and trumping her Mark Twain quote rhapsodizing about India with a Max Mueller observation he dug up about the glory of India.

“So when it comes to the sphere of our work — building a future of greater prosperity, opportunity and security for our people, there is no doubt: I have to go to India. But even more, I am proud to go to India,” Obama said.

Obama, when he makes the trip, will be the sixth American President to visit India after Dwight Eisenhower, Richard Nixon, Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, and George Bush (43). (ANI)

Traditional ‘Kahika Fair’ celebrated in Himachal Pradesh

Kullu (Himachal Pradesh), May 29 (ANI): Thousands of devotees converged to celebrate the traditional ‘Kahika Fair’ in Shirar village, near Himachal Pradesh’s Kullu town on Friday.

Sounds of hymns in the air marked the beginning of the festival in the village that was adorned with colourful canopies.

An important ritual observed during the festival is a mock sacrificial ceremony of a member of Naur (a tribe) and getting his life back from the gods.

“It is a common belief that during the festival all gods and goddesses come under a tree and an arrow is shot in the air. The arrow is considered so powerful that it takes the life of the Naur and he is declared dead,” said Rajesh Sharma, a local.

“Then the gods and goddesses use their prowess to give life to the dead Naur,” he added.

The natives here believe that the prayers performed during the festival sanctify the village and purify the souls of the people participating in it.

“The rituals performed during the Kahika festival purify the area and shuns evil spirits and that is why the sacrifice of the Naur’s life is performed and he comes back to life,” said Arun Kumar, a local.

Kumar appeared confident that the festival would bring prosperity in the village.

“This year the Naur-Megha-Yajna (a ritual performed in which a person from the Naur tribe is declared dead and is brought back to life by observing ceremonial prayers) was conducted peacefully and it will bring happiness and prosperity among us,” said Arun Kumar. (ANI)

East Timor threatens to scuttle gas development

East Timor’s president Jose Ramos-Horta says his country is serious about making sure its interests are not ignored in the development of the Greater Sunrise Gas field.

East Timor’s government wants the gas processing plant built in East Timor.

The field’s developer Woodside says it will soon make a choice between building a floating plant in the Timor Sea or a pipeline to Darwin.

Dr Ramos-Horta says it is possible East Timor will not allow the development to go ahead.

“If it’s an arbitrary decision that we know is politically motivated, based on prejudices about a small developing country – if the decision is based on that and seems like it’s based on that rather than technical and commercial considerations – then obviously we can not agree,” he said.

“For Australia, one pipeline more, one pipeline less to Darwin – it wouldn’t make a terrible difference.

“But to Timor, it would ensure its prosperity into the future.

“So this is a political question. It’s a moral, ethical question besides the commercial consideration.”

Holbrooke further said, “The International community and the Afghan people deeply appreciate the very substantial humanitarian and reconstruction assistance that India provides Afghanistan.”

“The willingness of India to take risks and make sacrifices to help Afghanistan is testament to India”s commitment global peace and prosperity and a vital part of the international commitment to Afghanistan”s future,” he added. (ANI)
