UK fitness TV teaches bhangra workout class!

London, September 17 (ANI): A new British TV station, dedicated entirely to fitness, is offering a string of classes, including those on Bhangra.

The Fitness TV, a 24-hour station, also hosts a high heel workout class for the women who refuse to get out of their beloved stilettos. Other workouts include those based on Salsa, Hip Hop and Disco.

“Just like a personal trainer, the channel allows viewers to tailor workouts to their own levels of fitness and interests and can be easily scheduled around busy lives,” the Sun quoted a spokesman for the TV shows as saying.

“Programmes range from children’s classes including a mobility and balance workout for pre-schoolers, kids’ yoga and street dance for teenagers, while pensioners and the less mobile are offered Chairobics.

“For the more adventurous, there are boot camp-style workouts and dance-based exercise sessions for Strictly Come Dancing fans, including Bhangra, Cheerleader and 70s Disco.

“There’s even a High Heels workout for more glamorous viewers,” the spokesman added.

Fitness TV founder Luan Underwood, a former personal trainer and mum-of-two, said: “We are positioning the channel as an additional workout option, not as a replacement to gyms, fitness and wellbeing classes.

“We would like to capture the imagination of the 80 per cent of UK citizens that have never visited a gym and inspire them to do so.

“We also aim to reach people unable to visit fitness facilities, perhaps because they have young children, or time pressures that make it difficult to get to the gym for a few weeks.

“With Fitness TV, people can squeeze in a session at a time to suit them, and because the classes are constantly being updated, they’ll be more motivated to stick to them than they would an exercise DVD,” Underwood added. (ANI)

‘Defeat divisive forces’

HOT ON the heels of BJP prime ministerial candidate L.K. Advani, Congress president Sonia Gandhi arrived in Orissa on Thursday. She addressed three rallies at Bargarh in western Orissa and Congress strongholds of Koraput and Berhampur in south.

A single-party government at the Centre, Kandhamal and defeating divisive forces formed the core of her speeches at all three rallies. Sonia reached the packed venue at Bargarh aboard a helicopter at 11 am.

She appealed to the people to vote the Congress back to power to defeat the “avsarwadi gathbandhan” (opportunistic alliances) that have throttled India’s development. “There was a time when the Centre and the states had one party in the government.

As a result, it was easier to work together for the development of the country. From Independence to nation building, the leaders of the Congress Party have made supreme sacrifices for the development of the country,” Sonia said.

Sonia said in the last five years despite being a coalition, the UPA government had worked towards the uplift of the poor. Programmes, like the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, have worked wonders for the poor.

“However, the BJD-BJP government in Orissa has tried to take credit for many programmes initiated by the Centre.” She also took a dig at the saffron family, but without taking any names.

“We must be alert against the divisive forces and foil the machinations of those who sow the seeds of hatred in the name of religion and caste. The people of Orissa have been living in peace and harmony for years.

They do not want violence. But some forces fuel hatred and violence among people, like in Kandhamal.

Defeat those forces. Maintain peace and harmony to make progress,” she appealed.

Promotion Marketing Awards of Asia 2009 invites Ambika Sharma to be a part of their jury

New Delhi, Mar 27 (ANI/Business Wire India): The Promotion Marketing Awards of Asia (PMAA) has invited Ambika Sharma, National Head of Jagran Solution, to be a part of their jury for this year.

The awards are to be held on August 7, 2009 in Australia. Online entries will be completed by March 27, 2009 post which the jury will start the selection procedures.

Sharma has been associated with PMAA for long and was also chosen to represent the PMAA in India as the Zonal Director in 2009. She had also earlier served on the jury of the PMAA 2008, as well as the MAA Globes 2008.

PMAA will complete a decade in 2009 marking it excellence in Asia. It recognizes the very best Promotion Marketing excellence and mastery throughout Asia every year.

All Gold, Silver and Bronze PMAA Dragons will go on to represent Asia at the MAA Globes. Since 1965, the Marketing Agencies Association Worldwide (MAA Worldwide) has been the voice and authority of the Promotion Marketing Industry, spanning all continents of the Globe.

The MAA ‘GLOBES’ is the only global programme which recognizes the distinguished excellence of the Best of the Best in Promotion Marketing Award Programmes from Europe, North America, South America, South Africa, Australia and Asia.

Obama: Congress approval of stimulus bill is major milestone

Washington – US President Barack Obama on Saturday thanked Congress for passing a 787-billion-dollar economic stimulus bill, which he called “a major milestone on our road to recovery.”

In his weekly address he also warned that “this historic step won’t be the end of what we do to turn our economy around, but the beginning.”

The long-awaited passage of the stimulus bill – the largest single spending proposal in US history – marked Obama’s first major legislative victory since he took office January 20. The president could sign it into law as early as Monday, the White House said.

But the victory did not come with the bipartisan support Obama’s administration had originally hoped for. The president instead relied on the Democratic Party’s majorities in both chambers.

The House of Representatives approved the plan 246-183 Friday afternoon – not a single Republican supported the measure.

The Senate followed suit Friday evening by 60-38, garnering the support of only three Republicans and just barely meeting the 60-vote threshold.

“Some fear we won’t be able to effectively implement a plan of this size and scope, and I understand their skepticism. Washington hasn’t set a very good example in recent years. And with so much on the line, it’s time to begin doing things differently,” Obama said Saturday.

Once the bill is signed into law, a new website – www. recovery. gov – will allow Americans to track how the money is being spent. “I encourage every American to do so. Ultimately, this is your money, and you deserve to know where it’s going,” Obama said, promising accountability and transparency.

The administration insists the package – a mixture of tax cuts and spending programmes – will save or create 3.5 million jobs over the next two years and upgrade the country’s ailing infrastructure, energy, health care and education system. (dpa)

BBC halts radio services to Sri Lanka’s state-run broadcaster

BBC halts radio services to Sri Lanka's state-run broadcasterColombo – The BBC World Service on Tuesday stopped providing radio news to Sri Lanka’s state broadcaster because of what it calls “deliberate interference” by government censors.

A statement from the BBC said that its FM broadcasts to the Sri Lankan Broadcasting Corporation have been suspended with effect from Tuesday.

The move came after many of its news reports in the Sinhala, Tamil and English languages, mainly related to the ongoing fighting between government troops and Tamil rebels, had been blocked or only partially broadcast over the past few weeks.

The BBC broadcasts two half-hour programmes in Sinhala and Tamil daily. They are popular among listeners in the south. To ensure a bigger audience, they are broadcast via FM channels of the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC).

The BBC said the SLBC chairman, Hudson Samarasinghe, admitted censoring BBC programming, saying he “had a duty to do so at a time of war.”

The BBC said it will maintain its services in Sinhala, Tamil and English on short wave radio and online. BBC news reports in English are to continue on the Sri Lankan commercial radio broadcaster, MBC.

The BBC move follows allegations that press freedoms are being eroded in Sri Lanka as fighting intensifies between troops and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).

Government troops are carrying out military operations in the last strongholds of the rebels in the Mullaitivu district where some 150,000 civilians are believed to be remaining.

More than 6,500 civilians entered military controlled areas from the rebel held areas on Monday, marking the largest number of arrivals in a single day.

Meanwhile the death toll in Monday’s suicide bomb attack at a camp for displaced persons has risen to 30 with the deaths of two more civilians. The explosion killed 20 soldiers and 10 civilians.

A woman posing as a civilian entered the government-controlled area and exploded herself at a welfare centre where a large number of civilians were present. Some 40 civilians and 24 soldiers were injured in the blast. (dpa)

Promotion Marketing Awards of Asia appoints Ambika Sharma as zonal director for India

New Delhi, Feb 9 (ANI/Business Wire India): The Promotion Marketing Awards of Asia (PMAA) has recently appointed Ambika Sharma as the Zonal Director for India.

2009 will be the 10th year for the PMAA. The PMAA recognizes the very best Promotion Marketing excellence and mastery, throughout Asia. All Gold, Silver and Bronze PMAA Dragons will go on to represent Asia at the MAA Globes.

For 44 years, the Marketing Agencies Association Worldwide (MAA Worldwide) has been the voice and authority of the Promotion Marketing Industry, spanning all continents of the Globe.

The MAA ‘GLOBES’ is the only global Programme which recognizes the distinguished excellence of the Best of the Best in Promotion Marketing Award Programmes from Europe, North America, South America, South Africa, Australia and Asia.

Sharma had earlier served on the jury of the PMAA, as well as the MAA Globes and now in her present role would represent the PMAA in India. Commenting on her new role, Sharma said, “I, on behalf of Jagran Solutions, have been associated with PMAA for long now and I am honored to be chosen to represent the PMAA in India as the Zonal Director.

Post PMAA 2008 The Judging Panel observed that Promotion Marketing techniques and disciplines are now being used by Marketers much more evenly throughout the Region than in the past and many of the strategies and executions were truly World Class.

Marketers are clearly adopting challenging strategies in order to make their brands stand out from the ever increasing market clutter.

It was also very pleasing to see the increase in campaigns for local Asian brands. Of the total PMAA Gold Dragons, awarded from Entries from 13 Countries in 2008, China emerged as an equal Winner with India in the largest PMAA Programme ever.

Sharma added, “Integration, Innovation and Brand Building Campaigns dominated the 2008 Promotion Marketing Awards of Asia. Now with the slow down measurable marketing initiatives and activations have gained center stage, agencies in India have begun to explore quite successfully innovative options in the sphere of promotional marketing.”

“The PMAA provides a platform for recognition and evaluation on a global level. It is important for the Industry to have access to such established global programs. Being on the Jury of PMAA and MAA Globes was an enriching experience, the quality of work from Asia and across the Globe was excellent. We have truly path breaking campaign in India which can excel on global level. We hope to see more such exceptional promotional marketing campaigns in PMAA 2009 from Agencies as well as marketers,” Sharma said.

Sharma has over 14 years of experience holding key positions in leading promotional marketing companies.

At present, she is the National Head for Jagran Solutions, an activation agency specializing in brand activations via consumer connect strategies.

She has been instrumental in making it one of the leading promotional marketing communications companies in India. (ANI)

Bavaria demands British pulp reprinted Nazi newspapers

Bavaria demands British pulp reprinted Nazi newspapers Munich – The German state of Bavaria demanded Friday that a British publishing company stop reprinting Nazi-period newspapers.

The educational reprints of the hate press have become best sellers in a nation where most people under 80 have never seen Nazi propaganda in the raw and those over
80 do not want to talk about it.

Albertas Ltd hired German historians to annotate the facsimiles and underline the methods of Nazi propaganda. The new weekly series, using papers from the 1930s and
1940s, is aimed at the general public and schools.

The first issue reprinted newspapers from the day that Adolf Hitler was elected German chancellor on January 30, 1933.

The state of Bavaria contended Friday it owned the copyright to the old newspapers and demanded that Albertas abandon the project and recall stocks for pulping.

Bavaria’s finance ministry took over all assets of the main Nazi publishing house, Eher, after the Second World War.

As the second issue of the series, Albertas had planned a facsimile of the Voelkischer Beobachter, a particularly vitriolic Nazi Party newspaper, which was published by Eher.

Several German historians have defended the project.

One, Wolfgang Benz of Berlin, said the edited facsimiles were more educational and less harmful than German television history programmes about the Nazis which include Nazi film footage and images of swastikas.

Bavaria has never allowed reprints of entire Nazi books and magazines, though quoting from them is allowed under German copyright law. Bavaria has consistently blocked plans to reprint Adolf Hitler’s book Mein Kampf, which remains under copyright till 2015.

Jewish commentators have been divided about the facsimiles.

Albertas quoted Christian Boehme, editor of the Jewish weekly Juedische Allgemeine Wochenzeitung, as approving. But Charlotte Knobloch, president of the Central Council of Jews, has opposed the series.

Ralph Giordano, an author persecuted by the Nazis for his Jewish ancestry, said he feared some people would be convinced by the hate speech. (dpa)

At a concluding session of the 16th General Session of the Afro-Asian Rural Development Organization (AARDO), it was also decided to hold the next conference be in Egypt during the year 2011.

Union Rural Development Minister Dr. Raghuvansh Prasad Singh while briefing media persons on the outcome of the General Session said that the implementation process of NREGA, PMGSY and other flagship programmes run by his Ministry has influenced the participating delegates, and they have sought further details in this regard so as to carry such programmes in the respective countries also.

The conference, which began on January 6, elected India as President of AARDO for the triennium 2009-2011 with Syria and Nigeria as Vice-Presidents from Asia and Africa regions respectively.

Among the important agenda items deliberated in the conference were member relations, membership contribution, review of activities, technical work programme and income and expenditure for the next triennium 2009-2011.

Over-the-phone weight loss counselling really works

Washington, Jan 9 (ANI): A new study has revealed that counselling via the phone and Internet can help weight management in overweight individuals.

The study compared counselling via phone and e-mail with the standard practice of issuing self-help literature in approximately 1400 workers as an aid to weight management.

The study was conducted by a research team, led by Willem Van Mechelen of the Department of Public and Occupational Health/EMGO Institute of VU University Medical Center in Amsterdam, the Netherlands,

The participants in this study, each with a BMI greater than 25 (the level considered overweight), were employees recruited from seven companies.

They were randomly split into three groups: a control group, one which received written programme-materials and counselling via phone and another which had access to an interactive programme-website and received counselling via e-mail.

All of the participants, including the control group, received self-help brochures that emphasised the importance of physical exercise and diet.

The counselling received by the Internet and phone groups included encouragement to fit physical activity into their normal routine, such as taking a walk at lunch, and stressed eating a healthy diet. These interventions were continued for up to 6 months.

The researchers assessed the body weight of each participant and each was given a questionnaire by which their food intake, physical activity and waist measurements were assessed. These measurements were taken again six months later.

Overall, all the groups had significant weight loss and reduced their fat intake, but those in the phone group lost the most weight and had the greatest improvement in diet.

The researchers found no overall significant differences between the phone and Internet groups and both groups that received counselling lost more weight than participants who did not.

Those in the phone group also increased their physical activity to a greater extent.

The researchers concluded that lifestyle counselling by phone and e-mail is effective for weight management.

“This could form the basis of improvements in weight management programmes for those unwilling to seek face-to-face counselling. Future studies should evaluate the cost effectiveness of such schemes,” Van Mechelen said.

The study is published in the open access journal, BMC Public Health. (ANI)

AP Govt allots 210 acres for TIFR campus

AP Govt allots 210 acres for TIFR campusHyderabad (PTI): The Andhra Pradesh Government has allotted 210 acres of land, on the University of Hyderabad campus, to the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) for setting up its second campus in the country.

TIFR, an autonomous institute under the Department of Atomic Energy, is headquartered in Mumbai.

TIFR had come up with a proposal to establish a new campus to implement its plans for expansion of research, education and related activities with a projected investment of Rs 2500 crore over 12 years.

TIFR recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the University of Hyderabad to expand its facilities through a synergy of academic programmes of the two institutions.

The two institutions will also work towards providing high-class training in research and development, according to government sources.

An academic advisory committee would be formed to explore ways to foster co-operation between TIFR and UoH both in research and teaching activities, the sources added.

The Andhra Pradesh Cabinet, that met here on Monday under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy, agreed to allot 210 acres of land free-of-cost to TIFR for setting up its Hyderabad campus, according to state information minister A Ramanarayana Reddy.

50 pilgrims to reach Pak on Jan. 8 for 300th birth anniversary of Shada Ram

Lahore, Jan 7 (ANI): A delegation of 50 Hindu pilgrims from India will cross the Wagah border into Pakistan on January 8 to attend saint Shada Ram’s 300th birth anniversary at Shadani Darbar in Ghotki, Sindh.

Evacuee Trust Property Board (ETPB) Chairman Asif Saeed Hashmi said on Tuesday that Yudhishter Lal Ji Maharaj will lead the pilgrims.

Hashmi said it was the Pakistan government’s policy to facilitate and accommodate the pilgrims in the country.

ETPB Additional Secretary Siddique Khurram said the pilgrims would be provided accommodation and travel facilities.

Shadani Darbar organiser Jai Ram Das said, “It is a mega event in which people from across the world take part. Stage shows and musical programmes will be arranged.”

Every year, Indian pilgrims participate in the festival and also visit various religious places, he said.

According to the legend, Ghulam Shah Kalhoro, the ruler of Sindh, terrorised Hindus in 1700.

Perturbed by his actions, Hindus prayed to Lord Shiva at Mathelo. One night the Sarpanch saw Lord Shiva in his dream. Lord Shiva told him that he had taken birth in the form of ‘Shadaram’ in Lahore and would come to Mathelo for their salvation.

Shada Ram came to Mathelo in 1768 and kindled ‘Dhuni Saheb’ there. When Kalhoro insulted a Hindu widow, Shadaram cursed the ruler, saying that Kalhoro would lose the kingdom.

Shada Ram’s words came true and Kalhoro lost his kingdom and died in misery. After that Shadaram shifted to Hayat Pitafi and laid the foundation of the Shadani Darbar.

London, January 7 (ANI): Norwegian national broadcaster NRK’s attempt to put the entire Beatles back catalogue on the Internet for free has been scuppered, as it breaches an agreement with rights holders.

The plan was to posting 212 tracks online in a series of podcasts, with each song preceded by a three-minute talk about its history.

NRK is said to have a deal with TONO, which owns rights to work by Norwegian artists, allowing the broadcaster to make all the material in its archive available in a podcast.

However, the record company IFPI, which owns the rights to the Beatles back catalogue, had allowed that only for programmes aired in the last month.

“We had a very good and open agreement with the Norwegian composers and people forgot that we need to have the same agreement with the record companies,” the Telegraph quoted technology adviser for NRK, Oyvind Solstad, as saying.

“We could have aired the whole thing and then podcast it, but I think the record company would have tried to stop it anyway. There”s something in the agreement where they can exclude certain artists,” Solstad added.

NRK is a national broadcaster funded by a licence fee, which is currently trying to open up decades of archives to the public.

Solstad added: “We want to share as much as possible of our archives with the public. We can”t do that if we can only podcast things that have been aired in the past four weeks. We need a better agreement. People”s media habits have changed, and young people want things on their ipods.”

He, however, said that he had “small hopes” that the Beatles material would eventually be released. (ANI)

Broadcasting station attacked by armed gang in Sri Lanka

Colombo – A private radio and television station on the outskirts of Sri Lanka’s capital has been attacked by an armed gang that inflicted extensive damage to the studio complex and interrupted its broadcasts, a spokesman for the station said Tuesday.

A gang of 15 to 20 men stormed the Maharaja TV and Maharaja Broadcasting Corporation at Pannipitiya, 20 kilometres south-east of the Colombo, holding the staff at gunpoint and assaulting some of them before causing the damage early Tuesday, the spokesman said.

“The attackers opened fire inside the building, lobbed grenades and went on the rampage, damaging office furniture, equipment and the mobile vehicle used for outdoor broadcasts in an attack that lasted 45 minutes,” the spokesman said.

The attackers were unidentified. In recent months, government politicians have accused the station of airing pro-Tamil rebel programmes.

The television and radio station has become one of the most popular private broadcasters in the country.

TV and radio programmes have been interrupted at the station, but management said they were making temporary arrangements to resume broadcast services. (dpa)

Andrew Sachs to star in ‘Coronation Street’

London, January 6 (ANI): Andrew Sachs, who recently hit the headlines following a lewd prank call made by Brit RJ Russell Brand, is set to star in one of the longest-running TV programmes in the UK, ‘Coronation Street’.

The 78-year-old veteran, best known for his portrayal of Manuel in ‘Fawlty Towers’, would grace the cast of the soap opera, whose 7000th episode is due to broadcast on January 28.

“Yes, I can confirm that Andrew Sachs has taken us up on the offer. He will be joining us later this year,” the Daily Express quoted an ITV spokesman as saying.

Sachs had received four messages on his home phone from RJ Brand and DJ Jonathan Ross claiming the former had slept with his granddaughter.

The infamous October incident, in which Brand spoke of his prior sexual relationship with the goth-styled model while Ross passed lewd comments, had led to a record number of complaints and criticism resulting in the suspension of both presenters from their positions at the BBC Radio 2.

The Brit actor revealed that he had been “absurdly busy” since the radio scandal.

He said: “Things have been piling up since this whole Ross business.

“This is a dodgy profession generally and I always think my last job will be my final job.” (ANI)

Academics call for introduction of ‘risk literacy’ for school students

London, Jan 5 (ANI): Basic lessons in statistics and probability called “risk literacy” may help teach kids how to weigh the pros and cons and make sensible life decisions, claims one of Britain’s leading mathematicians.

David Spiegelhalter, of the University of Cambridge, says that “risk literacy” is being ignored by the national curriculum, and has thus urged that pupils in every secondary school should be taught the statistical skills, critical to making choices about health, money and even education.

Spiegelhalter is UK’s only Professor of the Public Understanding of Risk, also said that just like the Internet transformed information access, there was a growing need to teach people how best to interpret data.

Understanding statistics and the principles of risk could help people to make sense of claims about health hazards and the merits of new drugs, to invest money more wisely, and to choose their children’s schools.

Spiegelhalter has even developed programmes for teaching risk literacy, based on familiar subjects such as the National Lottery and football league tables.

His colleagues are introducing these programmes to schools through a “Risk Roadshow”. They believe that something similar should be offered as a matter of course.

“I regard myself as part of a movement we call risk literacy. It should be a basic component of discussion about issues in media, politics and in schools,” Times Online quoted Spiegelhalter as saying.

“We should essentially be teaching the ability to deconstruct the latest media story about a cancer risk or a wonder drug, so people can work out what it means. Really, that should be part of everyone’s language,” he added.

Spiegelhalter further said that as an aspect of science, risk was “as important as learning about DNA, maybe even more important. The only problem is putting it on the curriculum: that can be the kiss of death. At the moment we can do it as part of maths outreach, maths inspiration, which is a real privilege because we can make it fun. It’s not teaching to an exam. But I actually think it should be in there, partly to make the curriculum more interesting.”

He suggested that risk literacy could be taught as part of maths, science, or civics and personal and social education.

He also claimed that by using simple examples, they could explain more complex statistical principles, such as recognising that apparently improbable occurrences are often in fact predictable in a population as large as Britain’s. (ANI)

Obesity linked to ovarian cancer: Study

London, Jan 5 (ANI): A new study by researchers in the US has confirmed that obesity is linked to ovarian cancer.

In a study of almost 95,000 women, researchers found that among women aged 50 to 71, being obese increased the risk of the disease by almost 80 per cent.

A link between obesity and ovarian cancer was already known, but the new study provides confirmation of the association.

The study also highlights the way hormones play a role in the way body fat influences cancer risk.

The link was only seen in women who had never used hormone replacement therapy (HRT) after the menopause.

No link between body weight and ovarian cancer was evident among women who had been on HRT.

The new study supports the hypothesis that obesity may up ovarian cancer risk through hormonal effects.

“The observed relations between obesity and ovarian cancer risk have relevance for public health programmes aimed at reducing obesity in the population,” the Independent quoted Dr Michael Leitzmann, from the US National Cancer Institute, as saying.

Researchers found that a total of 303 women in the study group developed ovarian cancer over a period of seven years. Among women who had never taken hormones after the menopause, obesity increased the risk of the disease by almost 80 per cent.

The study appears in the journal Cancer. (ANI)
