Facebook considers simplifying complicated privacy settings

London, May 20 (ANI): Social networking site Facebook has been noting the complaints about its privacy settings being too complex and is considering simplifying them.

It has decided to take up the matter after criticism of its privacy policy came from US senators, the European Union and civil liberty groups.

The site also stated that it was listening to the message from users that it has “made things too complex”.

“We’re working on responding to these concerns,” the BBC quoted a spokeswoman as saying.

“Watch this space,” she added.

At the end of last year Facebook changed its default privacy settings, allowing profile information to be shared with the wider web, unless users specifically opted out.

Last month it moved a step further, opening up Facebook data to third-party websites, described by founder Mark Zuckerberg as a move towards “a web where the default is social”.

While Facebook sold the idea as a way to offer a more personalised surfing experience, critics were concerned that users were losing control over their information.

It prompted a letter from the European Commission saying changes to its privacy settings were “unacceptable”.

The move caused outrage among some users, who have organised a “Quit Facebook” day, scheduled for May 31. (ANI)

Lilly the lonely meerkat finds love on internet!

Melbourne, April 28(ANI): Lilly the lonely meerkat has finally found her Mr Darcy – all thanks to the internet.

Lilly had been living at a theme park in Leicestershire, England, after an initial attempt to pair her with a mate was unsuccessful.

Her owners set up a website, meerkatmatch.com, to find her a partner.

Her profile in the site reads: “Alert, dark-eyed, inquisitive, free-spirited lady with a good sense of humor who enjoys fine dining, digging and cosy nights in!”

The site caught attention of the owners of a sandy-colored young male meerkat, residing in Cambridge.

He has now been shifted to Leicestershire to live with Lilly.

“She is totally obsessed with him. It’s true love. Hopefully soon we will hear the patter of tiny paws,” the Daily Telegraph quoted Sandy Gyorvari, manager at Twinlakes theme park in Melton Mowbray, as saying. (ANI)

Facebook’s Lite site closed down just after seven months

London, April 21 (ANI): Social networking site Facebook has shut down its Lite site after running for just seven months.

Facebook posted a note on its own fan page thanking those who used Lite, which had been aimed at users with slow or poor Internet connections, and stated that it had “learned a lot from the test of a slimmed-down site”.

“I think a lot of the Facebook experience was left out of Lite, especially the monetisable parts,” the BBC quoted Ray Valdes of Gartner Research as saying.

“The other part of this decision is probably because they have improved the performance sufficiently with the main part of Facebook and made things run better that they didn’t need this back-up approach to cover a situation of low performance,” Valdes said.

The technology blog ReadWriteWeb.com had described the Lite site as a “Twitter-like experience” of the popular microblogging service because it offered a smaller number of features than the fully-fledged site.

The options on Facebook Lite were limited to letting users write on their wall, post photos and videos, view events and browse other people’s profiles. There were no applications or special boxes.

“In some ways the Lite version was like using ad block on their own site – it stripped the site down to the very basics,” Mike Melanson of ReadWriteWeb said.

The change was announced on Facebook’s own profile page and offered few details as to why the service has been closed down.

“It would seem not enough people were using it but then there was not a lot of awareness about the product. Tears will not be shed over the loss of Facebook Lite,” Nick O”Neil of AllFacebook.com added. (ANI)

Kings set to return to NBL

The Sydney Kings are set to return to the NBL next season in a revamped nine-team competition.

League officials would only confirm on Thursday that a Sydney club will definitely compete in the 2010-11 season, with the unnamed privately-owned consortium keen to make their own announcement on the team name next week.

But it is understood the entrant will be the Sydney Kings, still one of the most well-known sporting brands in the country.

Basketball Australia chief executive Larry Sengstock said it is vital there is a team in Australia’s most populated city as the league tries to return to prominence.

“We’ve been very conscious of the fact we haven’t had a team in the largest market in Sydney and we’ve been working very hard and we can announce that today,” he said.

“Right across the board it’s going to increase our profile across the country.”

The NBL introduced strict new criteria prior to last season in an effort to ensure clubs could guarantee their long-term survival.

The NBL confirmed that the eight teams who competed last season – Adelaide, Cairns, the Gold Coast, Melbourne, New Zealand, Perth, Townsville and Wollongong – will all return next season.

The NBL said it was continuing to work to have a team in Brisbane again in future.

The competition will commence in October with the top four teams to qualify for the playoffs.

Flintoff to coach UAE cricket team for six months

London, Sep 18(ANI): England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff will be coaching the United Arab Emirates national team during the period that he recovers from knee surgery.

“A partnership has been agreed with Dubai Sports City to use their gym and facilities as a base for his rehabilitation. In return he will be carrying out some coaching for the UAE national team over the next six months,” The Independent quoted Andrew Chandler, Flintoff’s agent, as saying.

Consistently rated amongst the top international all-rounders in both ODI and Test cricket, Flintoff had announced his retirement from Test cricket at the conclusion of the 2009 Ashes series, but made himself available for future commitments in One Day International and Twenty20 International matches.

Flintoff’s career has also been marred with injuries due to his heavy frame and bowling action. He recently had surgery on his knee, which had been troubling him for long, and last week he had moved to Dubai, where he hopes to open a cricket academy.

“His partnership with Sports City will also help raise the profile of his Dubai academy,” Chandler added. (ANI)

Faster visa to US under Delhi consular section

New Delhi, Sep 15 (ANI): The US Ambassador to India, Timothy Roemer on Monday inaugurated the US Embassy’s new Consular (visa) section in New Delhi.

The new facility is the result of a multi-year, 10 million dollar expansion that would permit the embassy to provide faster and better consular service to the Indian community, particularly catering to northern India.

James Herman, Minister Counsellor for Consular Affairs at the United States Embassy, told reporters that new consul section doesn’t mean that more visas would be issued, but it would help clear the backlog.

“The new facilities designed here are to allow us the capability to process more visas. It doesn’t mean that we are issuing more visas. It is simply a matter of making sure that we can process all the visas applicants who want to apply for visas in India,” he added.

“Three years ago the average waiting time in India for a visa appointment was a little bit over six months, that is now down to a well under two weeks. In some place like Chennai for example it’s just a two-day wait. So the point is to give us the capability of processing as many visas as there are applicants,” Herman said.

The new facility doubles the waiting area, triples customer seating, adds a modern queuing system to guide customers through the visa process and adds many interviewing windows to ensure that visa applicants and American citizens can speak to an officer more quickly and in a convenient, modern environment.

The demand for consular services in India has surged to new levels, mirroring the deepening strategic partnership. Over the past five years, the issuance of U.S. non-immigrant visas in India have more than doubled from approximately 275,000 in 2003 to approximately 560,000 in 2008.

Speaking on the recent travel advisory issued to the Americans travelling to India, Herman said that it is routine and just meant for the safety of US citizens.

“The travel alert is for a wider audience. It’s basically says the same things as last two warden messages. So if you look at it it’s the way we communicate with Americans who travel…it’s a fair assessment,” he added.

The travel alert recently posted on US embassy website states that last years Mumbai terror attacks provides a vivid reminder that hotels and other public places being attractive targets for militant groups.

The advisory ask US citizens to maintain heightened situational awareness and a low profile. (ANI)

As the days for nominations to open on September 18 draws close, state Congress party leaders went in a huddle in Mumbai to screen aspirants seeking ‘ticket’ to contest polls on the party symbol.

“I have given my profile, I have told about major problems in our area including drinking water and irrigation and people do not get benefited from the policies of the government,” said Anil Chandra Kumar Gupta, an aspirant from Tiroda seat of Gondia district.

Congress party, which also heads the central coalition, is on a high after its good performance in the April-May general elections. (ANI)

Posh banned from spraying new perfume in front of allergic Whoopi

New Delhi, Sep 12 (ANI): Former Spice Girls member Victoria Beckham has been banned from spraying her new perfume when she promotes it on a US talk show hosted by Whoopi Goldberg.

Goldberg, 53, had invited Posh, 35, to appear on ‘The View’ to talk about her latest fragrance Signature Story, but totally forgot that she’s allergic to perfume, reports China Daily.

Posh has agreed not to spray the scent within a nine-metre radius of Goldberg, while audience members, who will get a goody bag containing a bottle of the fragrance, will have to sign an agreement not to open the fragrance in the studio.

“Whoopi was desperate to get Victoria on ‘The View’ as she’s got an incredible profile in the US right now,” a source told Britain’s Daily Mirror newspaper.

“Victoria is launching her perfume so the timing was perfect and she agreed straight away.

“Sadly, Whoopi didn’t really think things through – and it was only once her guest was confirmed that she informed producers she was allergic to perfume.

“If she smells it, her eyes well up and start streaming, and her lips even swell. Studio bosses have had to write up contracts for the audience and Victoria making sure they don’t spray the scent.

“It’s not the ideal way to promote a perfume, but Victoria saw the funny side,” the source added. (ANI)

Day/night test idea unlikely soon in absence of suitable ball

Sydney, Sep 11 (ANI): The idea of day-night Test between England and Bangladesh next year is unlikely to proceed because a suitable ball is yet to be developed.

The idea of day-night Tests was floated by the lawmakers of the game, the MCC, at a World Cricket Committee meeting at Lord’s in July to enhance the profile and appeal of the long format.

There is no indication to suggest that how much time it would take to develop the right ball, even as the England and Wales Cricket Board and Bangladesh Cricket Board would be happy to play the first ever day-night Test.

Researchers have been working on balls that could be used for day-night Tests, although testing on a pink version has uncovered excessive movement and grip issues that have made prototypes too dangerous to trial in matches, while the colour also wears off quickly.

With England’s domestic season concluding this weekend, there will be little opportunity to trial a day-night Test ball before the series against Bangladesh next year. And the ICC will not allow a ball to be used in a Test before it is used successfully at domestic level.

Other issues also remain unresolved, such as the colour of players’ uniforms and how playing conditions could be affected by the changes in light, The Sydney Morning Herald reports. (ANI)

Ang Lee ‘working on film version of Life of Pi’

Nevada (US), Sept 9 (ANI): Oscar winner Ang Lee is working with a writer on film adaptation of Yann Martel’s fantasy “Life of Pi” about a boy from Pondicherry, India, who survives 227 days after shipwreck, according to reports.

Lee is quoted as saying: “It’s a very strong story, but it’s hard to crack.”

Acclaimed Indo-American statesman Rajan Zed, welcoming the film adaptation of this India influenced story, urged Lee to handle the Pi’s spirituality exploration and holistic edge with cultural sensitivity.

Expected to be released in 2011, Canadian Martel’s (Manners of Dying) Man Booker Prize and other awards winning novel is an adventure tale about 16-years old Pi Patel stranded on a lifeboat with a hyena, orangutan, an injured zebra, and a hungry Bengal tiger in Pacific Ocean on his voyage from India to Canada.

It has sold well over one million copies and was a global publishing phenomenon. Keith Robinson adapted it into a play and toured England.

Oscar nominated M. Night Shyamalan (The Sixth Sense), Alfonso Cuarón (Children of Men), and Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Delicatessen); and Dean Georgaris (What Happens in Vegas) have already dropped this project after preliminary exploration.

The Fox 2000 high profile film adaptation will be produced by Gil Netter (Personal Effects). (ANI)

Need to prevent periodontitis to cut head and neck cancer risk

Washington, Sep 8 (ANI): Researchers at the University of Buffalo have stressed on the need for increased efforts to prevent and treat chronic periodontitis, a form of gum disease, to reduce the risk for head and neck cancer.

Led by Dr. Mine Tezal at Buffalo, periodontitis is an independent risk factor for head and neck squamous cell carcinoma.

“Prevent periodontitis; if you have it already, get treatment and maintain good oral hygiene,” said Tezal.

Chronic periodontitis is characterized by progressive loss of the bone and soft tissue attachment that surround the teeth.

The researchers assessed the role of chronic periodontitis on head and neck squamous cell carcinoma, as well as the individual roles on three subsites: oral cavity, oropharyngeal and laryngeal.

They used radiographic measurement of bone loss to measure periodontitis among 463 patients, 207 of whom were controls.

The results of the study revealed that chronic periodontitis might represent a clinical high-risk profile for head and neck squamous cell carcinoma.

The strength of the association was greatest in the oral cavity, followed by the oropharynx and larynx, according to Tezal.

When they stratified the relationship by tobacco use, they found that the association persisted in those patients who never used tobacco.

The researchers did not expect the periodontitis-head and neck squamous cell carcinoma association to be weaker in current smokers compared to former and never smokers, according to Tezal.

However, this interaction, although statistically significant, was not very strong.

“Confirmatory studies with more comprehensive assessment of smoking, such as duration, quantity and patterns of use, as well as smokeless tobacco history are needed,” said Tezal.

“Our study also suggests that chronic periodontitis may be associated with poorly differentiated tumor status in the oral cavity. Continuous stimulation of cellular proliferation by chronic inflammation may be responsible for this histological type. However, grading is subjective and we only observed this association in the oral cavity. Therefore, this association may be due to chance and needs further exploration,” she added.

Andrew Olshan, Ph.D., said these results lend further support to the potential importance of poor oral health in this form of cancer.

Olshan said, “Although the study is comparatively small, the researchers were able to also see an association between bone loss and the risk of head and neck cancer.”

The results of the study have been published in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research. (ANI)

Brit female soldier ‘Combat Barbie’ advertises Armed Forces lingerie deal

London, September 7 (ANI): A British female soldier has been selected to promote a lingerie chain’s discount offer to members of the Armed Forces.

Katrina Hodge, nicknamed “Combat Barbie” by her Royal Anglian Regiment colleagues, is helping to promote La Senza’s offer of a 15 per cent off to servicemen and women.

“I am enjoying the attention and profile but my job is still as an army soldier. I love the army life and if this encourages more women to join up then that would be brilliant,” the Telegraph quoted her as saying.

“I’m so proud of this campaign and I really hope that it encourages other high street stores to offer discounts to men and women in the armed forces,” she added.

Hodge, 22, came second in this year’s Miss England contest, and served in Iraq, where she was recognised for her bravery. (ANI)

Duffy dating British Lions rugby star Mike Phillips

London, Sep 3 (ANI): Welsh singer Duffy, real name Aimee Ann Duffy, is said to be dating British Lions rugby star Mike Phillips.

Sources say that Phillips, 27, dumped his girlfriend last week so that he could start dating Duffy, 25, who had a No1 hit with Mercy.

“Mike and Duffy went for their second date this week and they have fallen for each other,” the Sun quoted a source as saying.

“Mike got her number from his agent a couple of weeks ago and texted her.

“It’s like Gavin and Charlotte – he wants to raise his profile and fancied Duffy so he thought he’d try his luck.

“As soon as Duffy agreed to a date he dumped his poor girlfriend Claire. He makes no secret that he wants to be the new Gavin and Charlotte. Claire is gutted.

“He had set his sights on opera singer Katherine Jenkins a while back, but she wasn’t interested,” the source added.

Gavin Henson, 27, and Charlotte Church, 23, were christened the Posh and Becks of Wales when they started dating in 2005. (ANI)

PCB sacks chief operating officer Salim Altaf

Lahore, Sep 1 (ANI): The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has sacked its chief operating officer Salim Altaf.

PCB chairman Ijaz Butt was no longer interested in keeping Altaf in the board due to his poor management skills, erratic behaviour and intrigues, sources said.

“The termination letter has been sent by PCB director human resource Wasim Bari to Salim,” sources said.

Salim was appointed the chief operating officer when Ijaz took reins of the PCB after Nasim Ashraf resigned following resignation of former President Pervez Musharraf.

Shafqat Naghmi was shown the door and Salim was named in his place. The ouster of Salim is the third high profile dismissal in the PCB after sacking of chief selector Abdul Qadir and assistant coach Aaqib Javed from their respective posts.

“Seven out of nine PCB governing board members have signed the removal summary of Salim. The summary states that Salim’s services are no longer required by the board,” the Daily Times quoted sources, as saying.

The ‘sharp differences’ between Salim and Ijaz had reached their peak for the last couple of months. Ijaz had taken all powers of the chief operating officer in his hands and Salim, like a dummy official, was drawing only salary from the board.

“The decision to fire Salim was in the offing as Ijaz had enough of him. The two were not even talking to each other for quite some time. Relations between Ijaz and Salim started getting sour when the latter confronted the chairman twice on taking unilateral decisions and not taking other officials into confidence.”

Salim told reporters yesterday he had not received any termination letter from the board as yet. “I reserve the right to pursue legal action against the board for this unfair dismissal of my services,” Salim maintained. (ANI)
