Harvey in strife for trip

North Melbourne coach Brad Scott has tipped Brent Harvey to rebound from one of the quietest games of his AFL career, although a report for tripping stands as the first hurdle.

Harvey’s wretched game in North’s 104-point defeat to St Kilda on Saturday night was capped when he was booked for tripping David Armitage in the last quarter.

The evidence of umpire Hayden Kennedy will be crucial in determining what sort of penalty Harvey faces, as Network Ten did not have any vision of the incident during its broadcast of the game.

Harvey was kept to five touches by St Kilda tagger Clinton Jones, but Scott said the North star played under duress given his grandmother died recently, and he attended her funeral two days before the game.

“Boomer’s had an extremely emotional two weeks and he doesn’t use it as an excuse and we don’t give him the excuse,” Scott said after the 23.5 (143) to 6.3 (39) defeat at Docklands.

“The way he played last week (against Port Adelaide) was exceptional under enormous duress and that emotional pressure builds up on even the most professional players, even the best players.

“I think he felt like he had the weight of the world on his shoulders and on top of that Clinton Jones is one of the best defensive midfielders in the competition.

“I’m not concerned about Brent Harvey in the slightest. He will bounce back from this … he’ll do what champions always do, they bounce back.”

West Coast could also be further penalised following its loss to Port on Saturday night, as defender Shannon Hurn was booked for a heavy hip and shoulder on the Power’s Paul Stewart.

Stewart, who was low to the ground competing for a loose ball when Hurn collected him, took several minutes to regain consciousness and was eventually carried from the field.

The Power suspected the defender suffered a broken nose from the incident.

Hurn was booked for rough conduct.

The AFL match review panel will meet on Monday to analyse the round’s games.

Flintoff’s ECB contract rejection threatens Test cricket, but he plays it down

London, Sep.17 (ANI): All-rounder Andrew Flintoff may have unwittingly incited the break-up of international cricket by his refusal of an England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) incremental contract, but he has played down reports of a possible backlash.

Flintoff has assured that his rejection of an England increment contract, a second tier deal offered to him because of his retirement from Test cricket, did not lessen his commitment to England. The all-rounder, who is Dubai undergoing rehabilitation after knee surgery, made it clear that he has no intention of missing any England games should they clash with matches in the various Twenty20 franchise competitions he also hopes to be part of.

Although Flintoff has put all negotiations on hold while he recovers he is known to have been in preliminary talks with teams in Australia, where their revamped Twenty20 competition is to be called the Big Bash and South Africa, where the Pro20 is easily the most popular professional cricket in the country.

Sean Morris, the chief executive of the Professional Cricketers’ Association, said yesterday that other players would join Flintoff in rejecting national deals and that there may be a rash of early retirements from international cricket.

“I think there will be a lot of serious discussion in Johannesburg later this month among the parties and between the parties. I can’t overestimate its importance. In the space of a few weeks we have had two leading players withdrawing from components of the international game, Andrew Flintoff from Tests and Ricky Ponting, from Twenty20 internationals,” The Telegraph quoted Morris, as saying.

Flintoff’s move may stimulate more than debate.

England captain Andrew Strauss was mildly surprised by the decision.

“I’m not going to sit in judgement of him because we don’t know the reasons. We need to sit down and speak to him about why he’s done this and we’ll then make an informed decision about what that means to his availability for England,” he said. (ANI)

Cyber security and laws, a draw among youth in Hyderabad

Hyderabad, Sep 13 (ANI): An increasing number of students are drawn to learn cyber security as they foresee a bright future in this upcoming field.

With information technology (IT) gaining popularity the security of data compiled, stored and transmitted is of utmost import.

According to a study, the requirement of employees to prevent cyber crimes in India is higher in India than other countries.

Therefore many students in the ‘Cyberabad,’ another name for Hyderabad, have started opting cyber security as a course to be a professional in the field.

Presently, cyber security has good prospect in the job market.

“E-commerce has made a very huge impact in every country’s economy. So whenever you use Internet, you need security. It is a very booming and open market that is going to be coming in few days,” said Vikram, a student of cyber security.

The IT world is today faced with problems like spams, viruses and worms. Besides cyber terrorism and cyber warfare are the latest trends of nuisance, reportedly increasing at a rapid pace. It is felt that a proper cyber infrastructure is needed to combat all these problems.

Certainly, Zaki Qureshi, a software professional, has come forth to ensure Cyber Security by teaching various aspects to prevent cyber crime.

Qureshi, 38, IT expert feels that the government must take a pro-active role in ensuing foolproof cyber security.

“The government should take a serious initiative on awareness, training technology transfer and then we can call it as security development. I mean to say, you have to have a proper infrastructure in place. For all these, it takes a long time. It’s not a one-day or a two-day initiative. It will probably take half a decade,” said Zaki Qureshi, a software professional and an expert in cyber security.

Cyber security is very important to protect the IT services in corporate establishments, government organisations as well as the ones used by the general public.

Unfortunately, cyber security in India is yet to pick up among the IT users, said Qureshi. By, Jyoti. N (ANI)

Government to scrap all health regulatory bodies

New Delhi, Aug.28 (ANI): The Union Health Ministry has decided to scrap all health regulatory bodies, including the Medical Council of India (MCI), Dental Council of India, Pharmacy Council and the Nursing Council.

There will instead be a single regulatory body-the National Council for Human Resources in Health, which will oversee seven departments related to medicine, nursing, dentistry, rehabilitation and physiotherapy, pharmacy, public health/hospital management and allied health sciences.

However, the move needs a formal government notification.

Sources have claimed that medical education today is dictated by bank balance and caste.

The existing councils, besides being unwieldy, have failed to provide a synergistic approach and there is an urgent need for innovation in health-related education.

Sources said the task force report has been discussed with the Prime Minister on August 26, 2009, which state, “Professional councils such as the MCI/ Nursing and Pharmacy Councils have been set up to regulate the practice of their respective professions, including education.

However, it also says that many of these councils have drawn criticism from all sections of society and got judicial censure on several occasions.”

This action comes barely two months after a private television channel exposed private medical schools in Tamil Nadu charging students huge capitation fees.

The Human Resource Development (HRD) ministry has since initiated action against the erring colleges. The state government has issued showcause notices to both the private medical colleges after the scam came to light. (ANI)

London police stopped five under-10s a day in 2008, says Scotland Yard report

London, Aug.19 (ANI): Nearly 2,000 children aged under 10 were stopped by members of Britain’s largest police force last year, according to figures from Scotland Yard.

According to a report by The Independent, that means that at least five children aged ten or less were stopped for questioning.

Of the 1,954 stopped, 1,715 were boys and 239 girls.

Children under 10 are under the age of criminal responsibility in Britain.

The new statistics came to light after a mother, Sandra Shepherd, 40, complained that her nine-year-old son Jadan was stopped and searched by officers in Camberwell, south London, while out with his older brother and friends. A senior officer confirmed police are investigating a formal complaint about the incident.

Officers searched Jadan under section 60 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act (1994).

This allows police to search anyone they believe is carrying a weapon or anyone in the area of a violent attack.

A detailed breakdown of figures for 2008 revealed 115 under-10s were stopped and searched by officers using section 60 powers. Officers also used section 44 of the Terrorism act 2000 to stop 58 under-10s.

Jenny Jones, a member of the Metropolitan Police Authority, said police must tackle crime without alienating the public but questioned whether searching children as young as nine was an appropriate or effective use of police resources.

Lambeth Police Superintendent David Musker said: “I confirm this matter has been reported to the Directorate of Professional Standards and will be investigated.” (ANI)

There has been no shortage of tributes to Michael Jackson in the past two weeks, from mixtape tracks to concert nods. But perhaps the strangest tributes came from the world of sports.

Yesterday, basketball forward (and rapper/music mogul) Ron Artest signed a new contract with the Los Angeles Lakers (perhaps he can be the new Method Man). He’ll join the defending champions for five years at $33 million, but the biggest headline-grabber was that Artest said he would wear jersey number 37 as a tribute to Michael Jackson.

Ron Artest has decided to wear No. 37 with the Lakers in honor of Michael Jackson.

Artest,  worn five different numbers in his NBA career, wore No. 96 with the Rockets last season.

The forward chose No. 37 to honor Jackson’s “Thriller” album, which topped the national sales chart for 37 weeks after its release in 1982.

But the best tribute yet came professional MLS soccer player Kei Kamara, who celebrated scoring a goal by donning one sparkly glove and doing a Jackson dance. The Jackson mojo seemed to work best for Kamara — his Houston Dynamo defeated the Kansas City Wizards 1-0.

UK tabloid, Scotland Yard in fresh legal trouble over high profile phone taps

London, July 10 (ANI): Lawyers representing unidentified individuals from the world of politics, television and sport have said that their clients are considering suing the tabloid News of The World and Scotland Yard for refusing to come clean on a series of phone tapping episodes.

According to The Telegraph, the tabloid is alleged to have already paid over a million pounds in out-of-court settlements following the prosecution of Clive Goodman, the newspaper’s former royal editor, and Glenn Mulcaire, a private investigator.

They were jailed for hacking into the phone messages of aides to the Royal family two years ago.

Mulcaire admitted in the trial that he had also tapped the phones of model Elle Macpherson, Member of Parliament Simon Hughes, noted publicist Max Clifford and Gordon Taylor, the chief executive of the Professional Footballers’ Association.

But it has now emerged that hundreds more may have been targeted.

Those alleged to be on the hit list of desired victims included John Prescott, the former deputy prime minister; Tessa Jowell, the Minister for the Cabinet Office; Boris Johnson, the Mayor of London; actress Gwyneth Paltrow and Nigella Lawson, the chef.

Graham Shear, a partner at law firm Teacher Stern, said a number of his clients, who include actors, sports stars and politicians, were now considering legal action. Mark Stevens, another prominent media lawyer, said he had also been contacted by a number of individuals investigating whether they could sue.

The individuals may take a private prosecution over alleged phone hacking, or sue News International, which publishes the newspaper, for a gross invasion of privacy.

Scotland Yard, however, has refused to reinvestigate the phone-hacking allegations, insisting there was no new evidence of wrongdoing.

News International defended its journalists and said it would not “shirk from vigorously defending our right and proper role to expose wrongdoing”. (ANI)

Pitroda, Murthy and S Ramadorai considered for Air India’s top management spots

New Delhi, July 8 (ANI): The Civil Aviation Ministry is reportedly considering the names of Sam Pitroda, Narayana Murthy and S Ramadorai, who are top entrepreneurs and technocrats, for reviving Air India in order to bring high quality people of great integrity and proven track record in business.

These names would be considered as part of Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel’s plans of a major revamp of the national carrier’s top management, which would be carried out in next 30 days in a bid to turn around cash-strapped Air India in the next two years.

“Our minister has already initiated the process. These names will be finalised soon,” a news channel quoted a top official said.

Sam Pitroda is an inventor, entrepreneur and policymaker. Currently chairman of National Knowledge Commission, he is also widely considered to have been responsible for India’s communications revolution.

While, Narayana Murthy is an industrialist, software engineer and one of the seven founders of Infosys Technologies, a global consulting and IT services company based in India and Subramaniam Ramadorai is the CEO and Managing Director of Tata Consultancy Services Ltd, a major IT company in the country.

“Ramadorai’s name has already been cleared for the role of functional director. Talks are on with the others as well. As many as seven new directors may be inducted as per plans,” the source added.

According to sources, the entire top management of Air India, which is under a loan liability of Rs 15,000 crore, would be recast in the next 30 days. Several old time directors might be asked to leave and a Professional Chief Operating Officer will be appointed under the Chairman and Managing Director. (ANI)

Air India heading for massive trim; to start low-cost service

New Delhi, July 7 (ANI): Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel on Tuesday said that a major revamp of Air India’s top management would be carried out in 30 days and it would start low-cost domestic operations in a bid to turn around cash-strapped Air India in the next two years.

According to sources, the entire top management of Air India, which is under a loan liability of Rs 15,000 crore, would be recast in the next 30 days. Several old time directors might be asked to leave and a Professional Chief Operating Officer will be appointed under the Chairman and Managing Director.

“You will see in the next 30 days a major change in the top management in Air India. You are going to see a major change in the board. Some heads are going to roll. We are going to bring high quality people of great integrity and people with a proven track record in business,” said Praful Patel.

Apart from the massive trim, the airline has also been told to begin domestic low cost flights.

“AI must enter the domestic low cost segment. That’s where the growth is and is something that Jet and Kingfisher have already done. It’s upto the airline whether to use AI Express for that purpose or have something else,” Praful Patel added.

The Civil Aviation Minister’s remarks follows reports that Air India was expecting an estimated loss of about Rs 5,000 crore in the 2008-09 financial year. (ANI)

Woman recreates Michelangelo’s masterpiece in needlework

London, Jun 26 (ANI): A Canadian lady has managed to create an awe inspiring vision of Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel ceiling in simple cross-stitch.

Joanna Lopianowski-Roberts, 44, who lives in San Francisco, California, used a British concept by cross-stitch ‘guru’ Dave Peters, called Xstitch Professional, and she spent at least one hour a day for eight years creating it.

“I had stitched a couple of small projects before embarking on the Sistine Chapel and had never really felt any satisfaction when I finished them,” the Telegraph quoted her as saying.

“I wanted something I could sink my teeth into. I couldn’t find anything back in the early 1990s that fit the bill. My husband and I discussed for months different possibilities. At the time, my husband’s brother was living with us and he had a habit of taping pictures from magazines on the walls.

“Rather unglamorously, he had taped a pre-restoration picture of the chapel in the bathroom. It was the most interesting thing to look at while brushing one’s teeth twice a day and finally, one day, during this ritual, it hit me that this was the answer,” she said.

Over the following decade and by committing a total of 3,572 hours, which the IT management consultant and her house-husband Aaron Roberts, 45, clinically timed on a stopwatch, her vision became a reality.

As is the method with cross-stitching Lopianowski-Roberts had to pre-design an outline for each ‘fresco’ on her main canvas and then fill in all of the 45 sections with colour and detail by stitching.

“Starting was definitely the hardest bit,” she said.

“Now that I’ve done it once, it would be easy to do again. However, starting out it was daunting. I struggled with where to start and decided that the central border would work and that would provide an anchor for everything that came after,” she explained.

Lopianowski-Roberts started her work in October 1995, and she had to face several challenges that almost brought her close to giving up on the work.

In order to get the detail right for each individual ‘fresco’, she had to get an individual close up of each piece, which came from several different sources.

She even bought books from Rome to ensure she had an accurate depiction of every part of Michelangelo’s work.

“I lost momentum at some stages,” she recalled.

“I struggled with trying to figure out how to design the next sections. It was really hard and I had a lot of false starts. I even considered stopping.

“After many fitful starts and retries, I decided in late 2001 that if I didn’t set a commitment to myself of stitching an average of one hour every day, I’d never finish.

“The problem with that much stitching ending up being that I kept running out of pattern and had to make a commitment to work on creating the next patterns,” she added.

Her Sistine Chapel, which measures 40in by 80in, is now kept safely at her home.

Her accomplishment has now been documented in a book, In the Footsteps of Michelangelo: The Sistine Chapel Ceiling in Cross Stitch, which acts as a guide for other would-be stitchers to try themselves. (ANI)

An all-women consultative meet for peace held in New Delhi

New Delhi, June 24 (ANI): Professional women from northeast India recently shared a platform to discuss ways to bring peace, ensure justice and political rights ruptured by decades of conflict in the northeast region of the country.

The occasion was the first ever-consultative conclave of women from northeast organised by the Manipur Women Gun Survivors Network in collaboration with the India International Center in national capital.

With the theme “Northeast Women Initiative for Peace”, the meet was an effort to look at conflict issues in a holistic and strategic way.

Women, in the northeast, have played a major role in several social movements.

“Meetings like this is to say we can make a difference, every person can make a difference, every man, woman in the region can make a difference and this is what we are trying to say,” said Binalakshmi Nephram, Founder of the Manipur Gun Survivor Network.

“There are so many women groups all over Nagaland, all over northeast, all working for on the same issue; peace, conflict prevention. Why we are having this meeting is because this is a platform where we can all converge together and work for a bigger issues because when we look around, women organisation in all seven states, if we all come together on a powerful base, we can reach out to a bigger movement,” said Elizabeth Imti, Parliamentary Affairs Coordinator, Control Arms Foundation, India.

The conclave gave an opportunity to discuss and plan out several strategies based on problems faced especially by women due to rise in armed conflicts and violence in the region.

The meet also looked at measures in building peace and understanding among the different communities.

“In northeast, we have stereotype ideas about different people. So when we come together, those stereotype breaks. When you get together, when you talk, discuss. It’s through dialogue, there is better understanding and that’s how you should go forward and I’m sure something will come out of it,” said Uddipana Goswami, Media Consultant and scholar from Jawaharlal Nehru University.

“The efforts taken up by ‘Women Gun Survivors Network’ are worth praising. In this interactive programme, we got chance to interact with other activists and we take up issues related to northeast. That way, we can share our views. We need such initiatives in future as well,” said Malem Ningthoujam, a member of the Manipur Student Association in Delhi. It’s good we are having conclave and seminars like this because most people are not aware of what is happening in Manipur and northeast states. So with women taking this initiative, I think it is a good message to the men out there who are taking up their guns and fighting and not actually thinking about peaceful talks like this. I am very happy to be a part of this,” said Hommiza Raman, a participant.

The meeting drew up policies for women to strategize action plans in bringing peace and justice in the region. It also looked at the efforts taken up at local, national and international level to end violence in northeast.

The peace conclave will be held in the different northeast states throughout the year. By Kaikho Paphro (ANI)

Andy Murray hopes to become the David Beckham of tennis

London, June 22 (ANI): Britain’s No.1 player Andy Murray hopes to become the David Beckham of tennis, as he bids to deal with the huge pressure of being a sporting superstar.

Murray has the same management team as football legend Beckham, and when the pair launched a campaign recently to increase awareness of malaria, they travelled together to meet Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

“When you start out as a professional, you look to keep the same friends, the same people you have always had around you and just try to be true to yourself and do things that are important to you,” the world No. 3 said.

“When you start changing as a person and getting an inflated opinion of yourself and having a big ego, it becomes a problem. It happens a lot in sport nowadays and David’s done a great job of not letting all the fame and pressure get to him,” The Sun quoted Murray, as saying.

“David seems a very nice guy. It was a bit strange when we went to Downing Street – but to get the chance to meet the Prime Minister was very, very nice. That’s one job I definitely would not want to do,” he said.

Murray has two physical-fitness trainers and also travels with physio Andy Ireland, who even gives the player acupuncture if he is suffering from any aches or strains.

“In terms of the physical stuff, I started doing that 18 months ago when I started working with the new fitness trainers and was just travelling with them every week. I was training during the tennis and it made a huge difference over the year,” Murray said.

“Because of doing that, I was able to start doing the 400 metre and 200 metre runs faster and better – and lifting heavier weights. It wasn’t one thing specifically in the gym I was doing it was pretty much every part of the body I was working.

“I now feel like I can last longer in matches, whereas before I might have played a five-set match in a Slam and felt fine but my recovery wasn’t as good. I’m just recovering better from tough matches now,” he added. (ANI)

Justin Timberlake refuses to play golf with ‘skilful’ Jessica Biel

Washington, June 20 (ANI): Justin Timberlake has said that he won’t play golf with girlfriend Jessica Biel, because she can easily beat him.

The ‘SexyBack’ hitmaker has reportedly told his actress girlfriend to find a new partner after he lost a game between them.

“Jessica just joined his course, Brentwood Country Club, but he prefers not to play with her since she’s gotten so good,” Contactmusic quoted a source as saying.

The source added: “It’s too bad because he got her into golf in the first place.”

‘The Illusionist’ actress reportedly took up the sport, only to spend more time with her boyfriend.

A source said: “Jessica isn’t really that interested in golf, but she really wants to get better at it. It will give her more time to spend with Justin, since he plays 18 holes a couple of times a week.”

The singer, who plays off an impressive six handicap, is such a big fan of the sport that he owns his own course- the Big Creek Golf Course near Memphis.

He also hosts a charity Professional Golf Association (PGA) Tour event-the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in Las Vegas. (ANI)

Rural girls in Ludhiana drawn to professional education

Ludhiana, June 19 (ANI): Several girls belonging to rural parts of Ludhiana are eager to gain self-reliance and lead a professional’s life.

A college here has given them a hope that they can realise such a dream and for this it has opened many new courses which can be joined just after matriculation.

Home science, a holistic field of study, aims at improving the quality of life of families. In Ludhiana, it is empowering girls and enabling them to be professionals and self-employed entrepreneurs.

Established in 1966, the College of Home Science at the Punjab Agricultural University in Ludhiana has been empowering girls. With 305 students enrolled, it offers a number of study programmes with different levels and streams of education.

Girls from rural areas are eligible to join it after secondary education for one-year Diploma Course in Fashion designing, Interior Decoration, Management of Creche and Nursery Schools.

After completing their matriculation, they can take certificate courses in’Souvenirs and Handicarfts’ and Child Care.

“I believe that it is very necessary for women to be independent. Nowadays there are no government jobs. If we can learn and use fashion technology, we can stand on our feet. After getting a fashion designing certificate you can start your own unit and can earn handsomely,” said Baljinder Kaur, a student.

Keeping in view that many rural areas do not have adequate infrastructure and facilities to offer quality programmes of study at their level, the College has recently changed its admission criteria for B.SC (Hons.) Home Science six-year-programme.

Candidates can now enrol themselves after matriculation and this presents better opportunities for rural candidates.

The College has modified its curriculum and added new courses like convenience and health foods and apparel industry management.

It has certainly helped the rural girls by increasing their competence to work in the private sector.

“Being a girl also it has lots of benefit because tomorrow we are going to be the homemakers. So it is going to be really beneficial otherwise also since girls are striding forward in their career this is a very good option it is related to there household work also and gives them a good option to work,” said Jas Keerth, a student.

“Along with agriculture, development of rural families is very important and its main mandate is to improve the quality of the life of women. Be it in the form of giving residents instructions through teaching of various courses or taking up community directed research programmes, then extending the knowledge of teaching as well as research to farm families,” said Dr. Neelam Grewal, Dean of the College of Home Science, Panjab Agricultural University.
