Miss Fresh Face of North East contest a major draw for youth

Guwahati, Sep.18 (ANI): With the growing number of fashion conscious youngsters present in the northeast region of the country, the fashion and beauty industry is gaining popularity here.

This was recently noticed when Miss Fresh Face of North East 2009 contest was held in Guwahati and it received an enthusiastic response from people of the region.

Dabur Gulabari organized the Miss Fresh Face of North East 2009 for which a model hunt was conducted across colleges and institutes in the region to discover fresh new faces from the northeast.

The organisers of the contest received an overwhelming response with over 700 entries of which 150 girls were short-listed for the auditions.

After extensive screening and audition, 18 participants were selected for the Grand Finale.

It was a unique way of spreading awareness among the beauty conscious women of the North East and provides them a platform to enter the world of mainstream modelling.

“Northeast is full of talent. We don’t get into big celebrities. We take fresh faces from the common public and make them a celebrity. We want to associate with fresh talents and bring them to the national platform so that they can grow,” said Dyas Anand, the organizer.

“It is gradually increasing and I believe that it will go on increasing and the reputation will also keep on going up as good upcoming models are also there. I feel it is very good,” said Bidisha Baruah, the winner.

Bidisha Baruah, a resident of Guwahati, was awarded one-year modelling contract with Dabur Gulabari and a cash prize of rupees 50,000.

The first and second runner-up, Wanda Mary of Shillong and Nabanita Sarma of Guwahati also received cash prize of rupees 30,000 and rupees 20,000 respectively. By Peter Alex Todd (ANI)

Natural hydrogel may boost spinal cord healing

Washington, Sep 18 (ANI): A jab of biomaterial gel into a spinal cord injury site may significantly improve healing, according to researchers at the Barrow Neurological Institute at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center.

Dr. Mark Preul and Dr. Alyssa Panitch have found in a study that injection of an engineered hydrogel made up mainly of hyaluronic acid (a naturally-occurring body substance) into the spinal cord injury site decreases scarring, and promotes a realignment of the spinal cord fibres around the injury site.

The hyaluronic acid, which forms a scaffold-like configuration may help to structurally stabilize the spinal cord injury site.

The researchers traced cells in the brain stem after injury, and found much higher levels in the hydrogel treated animals as compared to animals that did not receive the treatment, and approached nearly normal levels.

Treated animals had higher functional scores than their non-treated counterparts.

“Spinal cord injury is devastating to civilian and military populations – especially to the young. There has been little progress toward paradigms of regeneration and few results that show real, sustained functional recovery. We’ve been so pre-occupied with regeneration, but that is a highly complicated and difficult to define goal. This project is a synergy of neurosurgeons and bioengineers that attempts repair of the SCI lesion cavity using a tissue-engineering biomaterials approach,” says Preul.

He added that the team aimed at finding ways to structurally allow the body to better heal itself.

“In this project we did not add anything to the hyaluronic acid. It may be that adding growth factors or cells into the gel matrix may allow even better results,” he said.

Preul said that the results show “we may be on a practical path that can give hope to the many people who suffer this sort of injury.”

The work was presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons in San Diego where it won the Synthes Prize for Spine Research. (ANI)

Lee is quoted as saying: “It’s a very strong story, but it’s hard to crack.”

Acclaimed Indo-American statesman Rajan Zed, welcoming the film adaptation of this India influenced story, urged Lee to handle the Pi’s spirituality exploration and holistic edge with cultural sensitivity.

Expected to be released in 2011, Canadian Martel’s (Manners of Dying) Man Booker Prize and other awards winning novel is an adventure tale about 16-years old Pi Patel stranded on a lifeboat with a hyena, orangutan, an injured zebra, and a hungry Bengal tiger in Pacific Ocean on his voyage from India to Canada.

Oscar nominated M. Night Shyamalan (The Sixth Sense), Alfonso CuarĂ³n (Children of Men), and Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Delicatessen); and Dean Georgaris (What Happens in Vegas) have already dropped this project after preliminary exploration.

The Fox 2000 high profile film adaptation will be produced by Gil Netter (Personal Effects). (ANI)

Google developing online version of Monopoly

London, Sep 7 (ANI): Google will be working with giant toy company Hasbro to produce a spectacular online version of Monopoly, say reports.

The game uses Google Maps as a board, allowing players to choose from millions of streets worldwide in their bid to become virtual property tycoons.

The rules are almost the same as the traditional board game, where only one person can buy an address, and then build on the plot to earn extra rent and increase their fortune.

However, the online version also lets players build skyscrapers, football stadiums, and other buildings as well as the usual houses and hotels.

And the ‘Chance’ cards give players the chance to ruin rivals by building prisons, rubbish dumps and sewage works on their streets.

Players start with three million Monopoly dollars, with Downing Street costing 231,000 dollars, and Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, where the White House stands, costing two million dollars.

Rent is paid automatically each day, from 50,000 dollars for a house to 100 million dollars for a skyscraper.

The free game, which has no real cash prize, is being run to promote the new 3D Monopoly City game.

“It’s a chance to escape the harsh reality of recession and enjoy building up an empire,” the Sun quoted Hasbro as saying. (ANI)

NYT reporter flees seven-month Taliban captivity

New York, June 21 (ANI): A US journalist kidnapped by the Taliban in Afghanistan last year has managed to escape from the compound where he was being held, The New York Times reports.

David Rohde, a New York Times reporter who was kidnapped by the Taliban, escaped Friday night and made his way to freedom after more than seven months of captivity in the mountains of Afghanistan and Pakistan.

The newspaper says its reporter scaled the wall of the compound with an Afghan journalist.

Rohde, along with a local reporter, Tahir Ludin, and their driver, Asadullah Mangal, was abducted outside Kabul, Afghanistan, on November 10, 2008 while he was researching on a book.

Rohde was part of The Times’s reporting team that won a Pulitzer Prize this spring for coverage of Afghanistan and Pakistan last year.

Rohde told his wife, Kristen Mulvihill, that Ludin joined him in climbing over the wall of a compound where they were being held in the North Waziristan region of Pakistan. They made their way to a nearby Pakistani Frontier Corps base and on Saturday they were flown to the US military base in Bagram, Afghanistan.

The driver, Mangal, did not escape with the other two men. The initial report was that Rohde was in good health, while Ludin injured his foot in the escape, The New York Times reports.

Until now, The NYT and other media organizations out of concern for the men’s safety have kept the kidnapping quiet.

Rohde’s keen interest in Afghanistan was ignited in the intense three months he spent there after the September 11, 2001, attacks, and cemented during his tenure as co-chief of The Times’s South Asia bureau from 2002 to 2005.

He continued to travel to Afghanistan after he returned to New York, where he is a member of The Times’s investigations department. (ANI)

But the Scottish church singer is set to defy the pressure and put up a fierce battle to bring home the title and the 100,000-pound prize money.

“This is my moment, it’s all that I’ve dreamed of,” the Sun quoted Susan as saying.

Hugh Grant’s post-scandal chat declared best moment of Leno’s Tonight Show

Washington, May 25 (ANI): Hugh Grant’s first TV chat after his headline-making arrest in 1995 has bagged the top prize in a new magazine poll of the best moments of The Tonight Show, during comedian Jay Leno’s tenure as its host.

Barca’s Messi takes a swipe at Man U’s Ronaldo

London, May 20 (ANI): Barcelona’s Argentine football star Lionel Messi has had a dig at Manchester United’s Portuguese striker Cristiano Ronaldo ahead of the Champions League final, saying: It’s not about you and me.

Messi, 21, said: “Nobody plays to be the best player in the world. This is a team game. I don’t see it as a tussle between Cristiano and me. It will be a Barca-Manchester battle. What is important is that Barcelona are champions of Europe on May 27 in Rome.”

“If we are champions it will certainly help me, but this is secondary,” The Sun quoted him, as saying.essi’s words will not be lost on Ronaldo.

The Portugal star was criticised for caring more about himself than the team after his strop when subbed in the Manchester derby.

Boss Alex Ferguson wanted to rest Ronaldo after securing a 2-0 cushion but the winger wanted to stay on and beat Nicolas Anelka to the Premier League top scorer gong.

Messi has an even bigger prize in sight. Barcelona has already won the Double in Spain and he is now eyeing a Treble to match United’s triumph in 1999. (ANI)

Gordon Brown writes open letter of support to Aung San Suu Kyi’s democracy crusade

London, May 19 (ANI): British prime Minister Gordon Brown has sent a message of personal support and solidarity to the arrested Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi, saying that she is “not alone” in her fight to reinstate democracy in Burma.

“We should not rest until you are able to play your rightful role in a free and secure Burma. I want you to know: you are not alone,” The Independent quoted Brown’s letter, as stating.

Last week, Suu Kyi was charged with violating the terms of her house arrest by allowing an American man to stay in her home for two days. She could face up to five years’ imprisonment for the intrusion.

Brown’s open letter includes a pledge to fight her cause, and encourage Burma’s Asian neighbours “to work even harder for your release and that of all political prisoners in Burma.”

Brown has long admired Nobel Prize winner Suu Kyi, 63, who was first placed under house arrest 20 years ago. In 2007, he dedicated a chapter of his book on courage to her, comparing her fight to bring democracy to Burma to that of Nelson Mandela’s struggle in South Africa.

“People are standing with you, not just here in Britain but everywhere that democracy and freedom are upheld. We are heartened by your tremendous courage, your inspirational leadership, and by the knowledge that no oppression is so great that the forces of liberty cannot prevail,” his letter reads.

Suu Kyi went on trial in Rangoon on Sunday. The British ambassador was denied access to the proceedings.

According to Downing Street sources, Brown hoped his intervention would help focus attention on Suu Kyi’s plight at a time when she faces fresh persecution from the military junta.

“I say to the generals who imprison you: the time for a transition to democracy is now. By excluding you from that future, by silencing and imprisoning you, they condemn your country to further decades of poverty and exclusion,” said Brown, who along with French President Nicolas Sarkozy, wrote a similar message on her birthday last summer. Indian origin student wins supersonic research contest in US

Washington, May 19 (ANI): Sidharth Krishnan, a student of Indian origin from Singapore, has won top honors in the non-US category of a high school supersonic research contest.

Teenagers from eight states and 11 foreign countries took part in the competition, which was sponsored by NASA.

The students were asked to write a well-documented research paper describing what needs to be accomplished to make supersonic flight available to commercial passengers by 2020.

More than 120 teenagers submitted 60 entries in four categories: US individual, US team, non-US individual and non-US team.

While Edric San-Miguel, a junior from Norfolk Technical Center in Norfolk, Virginia, earned the top score among all the entries, Sidharth Krishnan, a senior from Anglo-Chinese Junior College in Singapore, won top honors in the non-US category.

“All the conceptual designs were imaginative and innovative,” said Bob Mack, a veteran supersonics researcher at NASA’s Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia, who reviewed all the top papers.

“The design in the winning paper showed the student had a definite respect and appreciation for technical realities while still being imaginative,” he added.

Students could choose from two options in the competition.

They could write a research paper to discuss the challenges and solutions of supersonic flight or propose a design for a small supersonic airliner that could enter commercial service in 2020.

A group of NASA engineers reviewed all the entries.

The judges based their scores on how well students focused their papers and how well they addressed four basic criteria: informed content, creativity and imagination, organization, and writing.

NASA will award the top scoring papers from the US a cash prize of 1,000 dollars for the individual award winner and 1,500 dollars for the team.

Non-US students will receive an engraved trophy, but are not eligible for cash prizes. All participants will receive a NASA certificate. (ANI)
