Thai premier scraps early election proposal

Bangkok, May 13 (DPA) Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has scrapped an offer to hold an early election this year after anti-government demonstrators refused to end their two-month-old protest, officials confirmed Thursday.

Abhisit last week proposed to hold an election Nov 14, in a bid to appease the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD), whose supporters are commonly known as red shirts, which has been staging protests in Bangkok since March 12 to try to force a dissolution of parliament.

A precondition for the early polls was that the UDD must end its protest at Ratchaprasong Road in the heart of Bangkok’s commercial district, which the red shirts have occupied since April 3.

‘It is fitting that the premier has rescinded the offer to hold an early poll as the red shirts have refused to disperse,’ Korbsak Sabhavasu, the prime minister’s secretary-general, told reporters Wednesday evening.

The UDD leadership initially welcomed Abhisit’s proposal, but they have refused to disperse at Ratchaprasong Road until Suthep Thaugsuban, deputy prime minster in charge of security, faces criminal charges for ordering a crackdown on their followers April 10 that left 25 dead, including 19 protestors, five soldiers and one foreign journalist.

The condition was partly met when Suthep Tuesday acknowledged charges against him at the Department of Special Investigation, which is looking into the crackdown, but the UDD has insisted Suthep must be interrogated, charged and granted bail.

If Suthep is granted bail, the UDD leadership argues it would set a precedent for them to be granted bail as well once they end their protests and turn themselves in to the authorities.

The 24 top UDD leaders are afraid to quit their protest site because they face arrest once they step outside the barricades on various charges, including breaking the emergency law, terrorism and criticising the monarchy.

The UDD leadership is also split, with some of them willing to quit but others opposed to ending the protest until they have met their original goal of forcing an immediate dissolution of parliament, sources said.

Abhisit and other members of his Democrat Party have blamed former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, one of the de-facto leaders of the UDD although he is living in self-exile, for being behind the demonstrators’ reluctance to end their protest.

‘Everyone knows that Thaksin does not want to stop but wants to ruin all aspects of legitimacy,’ deputy leader of the Democrat party, Kraisak Choonhavan, told the Bangkok Post newspaper.

The government has postponed a plan to cut electricity and water to the Ratchaprasong neighbourhood out of deference to people, other than protestors, living in the upscale area.

‘Authorities are now working on technical ways to reduce the grid to the area with a minimal impact on non-protestors,’ government spokesman Panitan Wattanyakorn said.

Government hints at examining telephone tapping allegations

New Delhi, Apr 24 (ANI): The UPA Government has indirectly said that it could examine allegations of telephone tapping of political leaders said to be involved in the Indian Premier League (IPL) cash row controversy.

The Prime Minster’s Office is reportedly examining the issue carefully.

On Saturday, a prominent daily had claimed that phones of some political leaders, including Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar, Congress leader Digvijay Singh, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Communist Party of India (Marxist) General Secretary Prakash Karat have been tapped.

The opposition criticized the government for resorting to snooping on leaders.

Karat described tapping as illegal and intolerable.

“The UPA Government is resorting to the tapping of phones of political leaders which is illegal and intolerable. The government has to own up responsibility and take action against those responsible,” Karat said.

Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader S S Ahluwalia said his party would raise the issue in Parliament on Monday.

He contended this was a violation of Article 21 of the Constitution, which assures protection of life and liberty to every citizen. (ANI)

Lib Dem support jumps after TV debate

Support for the Liberal Democrats jumped after a historic television debate in which leader Nick Clegg emerged as a clear winner with viewers, a poll for the programme said on Friday.

The ComRes survey for ITV News put national support for the Lib Dems up three points on 24 percent, behind the Conservatives on 35 and Labour on 28 ahead of the May 6 general election.

It was the highest score for the LibDems in a ComRes poll since the last election in 2005.

The poll of 4,000 viewers was conducted immediately after the broadcast of Britain’s first televised election debate between the leaders of the main three parties. The results were adjusted to make them nationally representative.

If the ComRes result were repeated uniformly across Britain on polling day, it would lead to a hung parliament with the Conservatives as the largest party, according to a results predictor on the Sky News website.

Surveys released after the ITV debate showed Clegg had found most favour amongst viewers.

Pollster YouGov said 51 percent of respondents thought Clegg performed best, ahead of Conservative leader David Cameron on 29 percent and Prime Minster Gordon Brown on 19 percent.

Clegg has refused to say whether he would support a minority Labour or Conservative government after the election.

The Conservatives have led polls since January 2008, with the Lib Dems, who only hold 63 of parliament’s 646 seats, consistently in third place.

The Lib Dems polled 22 percent of the vote in the 2005 election, and their support has ranged around 20 percent in surveys conducted in the following five years.

At Congress HQ, PM, Sonia Gandhi condole tragic, untimely demise of YSR again

New Delhi, Sep.3 (ANI): A visibly distraught and at times emotional Congress president Sonia Gandhi told media persons outside the party headquarters on Thursday that she and other members of the Congress were deeply saddened by the death of former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Rajsekhara Reddy and the four other people who had accompanied him in a helicopter that crashed in the Nallamala Forest Range on Wednesday.

“The death of Dr. Y.S. Rajsekhara Reddy is a huge loss for the party, for all of us, for me personally, for the state of Andhra Pradesh and for the country. He was a hardworking and committed person. We are deeply saddened by his death and that of the others who accompanied him,” she said, adding that his historic padyatra (in 2003) had helped bring the Congress back to power in Andhra Pradesh.

She described him as a man of vision and dynamism who worked with dedication for the welfare of the people. Recalling his role in the preparations for this year’s general elections, she said that Reddy had said that the party and its leadership should trust him to bring it back to power in Andhra Pradesh for a second consecutive term, as he and other local Congress leaders had worked hard to win the faith of the people.

That he ensured a landslide victory in both the assembly and general elections for the Congress, made his death all the more sad, Gandhi said.

The Prime Minster, Dr. Manmohan Singh, who was at the party headquarters for a meeting of the Congress core committee, said: Soniaji has summed up the feelings of anguish and great sorrow that all Congress men feel. The Congress has lost an outstanding and committed politician. Mr. Reddy worked tirelessly for the implementation of various welfare schemes. He will be remembered for his commitment to the development of Andhra Pradesh.”

The messages came hours after the Army and the Air Force homed in on the missing chopper carrying Reddy and four others about 40 nautical miles east of the Kurnool mountaineous area.

Para-commandos were dropped in the area and they took a couple of hours to report the discovery of the five bodies on a hilltop in a decomposed state.

Andhra Pradesh Government Chief Secretary P.Ramakanth Reddy said the copter hit the top of SreeSailam hill in the Nallamalla forest area before exploding into bits and pieces.

Speaking to newsmen here on Thursday, Reddy said: “According to the initial reports, the pilots of the copter appeared to have deviated from the given track or route due to the bad weather and hit the top of the hillock, crashed and then blasted into bits and pieces. Only the tail of the copter is remaining.”

He explained “The terrain was very difficult, only the specialized commandos who are trained to handle such situations, could go to the area.”

Two army helicopters failed to identify the location of the crash. Commandos descended from the copter and conducted the search operation,”Reddy said.

“Initially, the commandos located three bodies, the other two were scattered at different places. So, it took some time to locate them,” Reddy explained.

“All the bodies are in a state of decay due to the heavy pouring since Wednesday morning, and they were burnt and charred.”Reddy said.

In the matter like this the administration has to take utmost care, that’s the reason the confirmation has been delayed,” he added.

The Andhra Pradesh Government has announced five days of state mourning for Reddy. The national flag will fly at half-mast during this period in the state. The Union Cabinet, through a resolution, has said that Reddy will be accorded a state funeral. (ANI)

Lily Allen confesses to being obsessive about cricket

London, Aug 25 (ANI): British singer Lily Allen has confessed that she is obsessive about cricket, and just cannot stop talking about it all the time.

Allen, 24, who was spotted cheering at the Ashes during England’s victory, also revealed what she found so fascinating about the game.

“I am obsessed with cricket – I twitter about it all the time. I played in Holland on Friday, got on a bus overnight and then drove to The Oval on Saturday,” the Sun quoted her as saying.

“I was trying to listen to the cricket in Amsterdam. I was screaming: ‘Australia are all out!’

“I first got interested in cricket about the time I heard Freddie Flintoff had a wee in the Prime Minster’s garden at Downing Street.

“No, seriously, I followed the 2005 Ashes – my dad is really into it and used to play. The girls would sit in the pavilion making sandwiches and the boys would play cricket.

“I’m an entertainer and my shows last an hour and it’s all very quick – life in the fast lane.

“But I’m not into one-day cricket or Twenty20, I’m into Test matches. I love the five-day slog.

“I think the Ashes should be seven or nine Test matches rather than five. It should be all-out war all summer.

“I’m a traditionalist. I like the beauty of the game, the whites against the green, and the slow pace. I like so many things about cricket,” she added. (ANI)

Sikh groups to observe 25 years of Operation Blue Star

Amritsar, May 24 (ANI): Various Sikh organisations have decided to observe the 25 years of Operation Blue Star as the Martyrs’ Day in the first week of June in remembrance of Indian Army’s action at the Golden temple to evict extremists hidden inside.

President of the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC), Parmjit Singh Sarna, on Sunday said that they would observe the completion of 25 years of Operation Blue Star as they observed other days of the Sikh martyrs.

Talking about the recent statement of Prime Minster Dr. Manmohan Singh on 1984 anti Sikh riots, Sarna blamed media for distorting his statement, which actually meant that the political parties should not exploit these issues for their vested interests.

American Gurdwara Parbhandhak Committee (AGPC) would also observe the 25th anniversary of Operation Blue Star by conducting a number of public programs in various Gurdwara situated in USA.

“A number of delegations would take out Candle light vigil in front of the Indian Consulates situated in USA and Canada to register their protest against the action taken by the Indian Army on the holy Golden Temple, 25 years ago,” said Dr. Pritpal Singh, convener American Gurdwara Parbhandhak Committee, over phone from the U.S..

Dr. Singh added the incident had deeply hurt the sentiments of the Sikhs, which they believe could never be healed.

However, another group Dal Khalsa has plans to undertake a “Genocide Remembrance March” in the lanes and streets of the holy city of Amritsar on June 3, the day when the Indian Army carried out action at the Darbar Sahib to force out militants hidden inside the revered place.

“The march would start from Dal Khalsa office and conclude at Akal Takht where Ardas (prayer) would be performed in the memory of those who lost their lives during the attack,” said Kanwerpal Singh, spokesperson of Dal Khalsa.

Indian Army units had used heavy artillery against the terrorist militia, led by the Sikh extremist Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, who was holed up inside the shrine complex.

SGPC, the premier body of Sikhs, would observe the Operation Blue Star’s 25th anniversary at Akal Takht, where they will honour the kin of Sikh martyrs on this occasion.

It is pertinent to mention that a few years back the SGPC had announced to construct a monument in the memory of Sikh martyrs of the Operation Blue Star, which is yet come into existence. By Ravinder Singh Robin(ANI)

Rahul Gandhi has all qualities to be PM: Jyotiraditya Scindia

New Delhi, May 16 (ANI): Congress leader and Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia on Saturday said that Rahul Gandhi has all the qualities and capabilities to be the Prime Minister.

“I am not undermining anyone but I am saying that Rahul Gandhi should be Prime Minister. He has all the qualities and capabilities to be the PM,” Scindia said.

Scindia further said that the whole country wanted Gandhi to be next PM.

“It is not the aspirations of the Congress party alone, aspirations not only of the youth of the country but all people of the country that he should get to the helm,” he added.

When asked whether Manmohan Singh should resign and Gandhi should be PM, Scindia said, “Manmohan Singh is the prime ministerial candidate of the Congress and absolutely once again will be the Prime Minster of the country. You asked for my personal opinion and I gave you my personal opinion,” Scindia added. (ANI)

Rahul Gandhi declines ministerial post in Manmohan’s cabinet|National[Sultanpur{Sultanpur, May 16 (ANI): Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi on Saturday declined to accept any ministerial position in Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh’s second government, saying he has already got a job to help the youth of the country to change the political atmosphere.

“I want youth to participate in politics. We need youngsters in politics. I hope youngster are listening to me,” Gandhi told reporters here.

When asked about the United Progressive Alliance’s (UPA) victory, Gandhi said the poor and youth of the country helped the Congress to win the elections.

“This country is progressing. The Congress party over the last five years believes that India is progressing quickly. This progress belongs everybody, large masses of this country. These elections are testament to the fact that the Congress believes in unification, in clean politics, in honest politics,” he added.

Gandhi further said that the people of Uttar Pradesh have rejected the politics of religion and caste.

“The people of UP have rejected the politics of religion, politics of caste. They have voted for development,” he added. (ANI)

British premier writes to victims in smear row

London – British Prime Minister Gordon Brown on Monday wrote personal letters to opposition political figures named in emails at the centre of a smear row which caused the resignation of one of his top advisors. Damian McBride, a former aide to Mr Brown in 10 Downing Street, quit his job over the weekend, after emails he sent in January suggesting possible smears of the top Conservative politicians were leaked to an internet blogger.

Facing demands for a public apology, on Monday Mr Brown wrote “personal” letters to at least three of the opposition figures named in the emails, and said he would tighten up rules governing civil servants code of conduct.

McBridge was formerly the prime ministers press advisor and strategy consultant.

Emails containing slurs about the mental health of a top Conservative politician’s wife, and the alleged ex-marital affair of a female lawmaker, among other rumours, were initially dismissed as “juvenile” by Downing Street.

But as the political row grew, McBride was forced to resign, and Mr Brown was facing serious questions about his judgement and calls for a public apology.

It is not the first row to embarrass the prime minster recently. The husband of the home secretary, Jacqui Smith, was recently caught claiming for pornographic movies from taxpayer expenses.

One Conservative parliamentarian was said to be considering legal action over the emails.

Mr Brown, who took over from Tony Blair in 2007, is lagging far behind in opinion polls, and must call an election by next year at the latest.(dpa)

India urges rich not to use “green” protectionism

India urged rich nations against applying a carbon tariff on steel and other imports, on the sidelines of UN climate talks in Bonn on Tuesday.

Both U.S. and European Union policymakers have considered penalising imports of products such as steel and cement, whose manufacture generates a lot of carbon emissions, from countries with softer climate policies.

“That is simply not acceptable, that is protectionism,” said Shyam Saran, special climate envoy to Indian Prime Minster Manmohan Singh.

“We should be very careful that we don’t start going in that direction. We welcome any kind of arrangement … where there can be a sharing of experience or best practices for any of these energy-intensive sectors.”

Developed countries want to protect domestic industry and stop companies moving off-shore as a result of carbon limits, for example under cap and trade schemes already functioning in Europe and planned in the United States.

U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu said last month that Washington’s plans to put a price on domestic greenhouse gas emissions included examination of the option of tariffs on imports from countries that did not penalise carbon emissions.

ONUS FOR ACTION

Some EU leaders, and especially French President Nicolas Sarkozy, have supported a tariff on imports up to the value of carbon permits that importers would have to buy under the EU emissions trading scheme, as if they were based in Europe.

“We have some of the most efficient (industries) anywhere in the world, whether cement … steel, but we also have some at very low levels of efficiency,” said Saran.

“We are trying to make sure we are able to raise levels of efficiency across the board for all of these energy-intensive industries.”

Some 175 nations are meeting this week in Bonn in one of a series of U.N.-led meetings meant to forge a deal in Copenhagen in December to replace or extend the Kyoto Protocol.

The talks are split on the level of action which industrialised countries take to curb their greenhouse gas emissions by 2020.

Developing countries say that the developed world has earned its wealth from two centuries of industrialisation, spewing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere in the process. They want the North to act first and help pay for carbon cuts in the South.

Saran reiterated India’s position that there was “no comparison” between the level of Indian and U.S. emissions, and that the onus for action was on developed nations.

“The progress so far has been disappointing,” he said of the Bonn talks. “We still have no clear indication about the emission reduction targets with regard to developed countries. There’s also still no guarantee over the scale of financial resources that would be available to developing countries (to fight climate change).”

A human chain on banks of Ganga marks World Water Day

Varanasi, Mar 23 (ANI): Residents formed a human chain on the banks of the Ganges river here to mark World Water Day on Sunday.

They vowed to cleanse the river of all pollutants and restore its mythological glory.Ganga is severely polluted and there is a need for joint effort. People wash clothes in the river, if things will not change then this major water source will die one day,” said Jugal Kishore, an activist.

Observed on March 22 every year, World Water Day is an initiative that grew out of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro.

Last year, the Government declared Ganga as a “National River.”

The Ganga Action Plan (GAP) was conceived by the late Prime Minster Indira Gandhi, who requested a comprehensive survey of the situation in 1979.

Even though millions have been spent to preserve the sacred river Ganges, the pollution level in the river has reached an alarming level.

The banks of the river present an ironical picture where on one side religious activities like prayers, recital of hymns and fire-rituals take place and on the other side, heaps of garbage lies unattended to. (ANI)

E-Mail System of Indian PMO Hacked!

E-Mail System of Indian PMO Hacked! Here`s something to wake you up.

For nearly 3 months during the last year, the E-mail system of the Indian Prime Minster’s Office (PMO) remained affected by a computer virus.

It is learnt that the PMO e-mail communication system was affected by the technical error caused by the Microsoft Outlook Express between February and April 2008.

The PMO maintained that many e-mails forwarded to the office didn’t reach the inbox. The authorities were able to find out the problem only in the month of April.

However, they are still not clear about the magnitude of the damage done by this problem.

The problem was exposed by the CIC when it complained to PMO, regarding the discrepancies in the Hindi edition of RTI act.

As a result, the Outlook Express was replaced with the Squirrel Mail by the PMO.

Many IT experts feel that it is quite disgusting that IT experts posted at the PMO took 3 months to identify the problem. They believe that such cases are spoiling country’s prospects for becoming the next ICT superpower.

With a bid to ensure smooth functioning of the RTI applications, the Chief Information Commissioner, Wajahat Habibullah has asked the PMO to improve its services.

Thailand’s exports fall 11.3 per cent in February

Bangkok – Thailand’s exports in February fell 11.3 per cent year-on-year while imports tumbled 40.3 per cent, the Ministry of Commerce disclosed Wednesday.

Exports in February, 2009, amounted to 11.7 billion dollars, compared with 13.2 billion in the same month last year. Thailand’s imports last month amounted to 8.2 billion dollars, down 40.3 per cent on the 13.7 billion import bill in February, 2008.

The drastic decline in imports points to a rapid falloff in imported parts and components for Thailand’s main export industries such as electronics, electrical appliances and automobiles.

In February exports of electrics fell 30.1 per cent, electrical appliances 33.3 per cent and automobiles by 33.2 per cent, according to the ministry’s latest figures.

The three sectors account for more than 60 per cent of Thailand’s total exports.

The only two Thai export sectors that performed well in February were rice, up 8.3 per cent, and jewelry, up 402.7 per cent, because of the jump in international gold prices.

Thailand’s exports in January fell 26.5 per cent year-on-year. Altogether the kingdom exported 22.2 billion dollars worth of goods in the first two months on 2009, down 19.2 per cent, while imports amounted to 17.3 billion, leaving it with a trade surplus.

The poor performance of Thailand’s exports, which accounts for approximately 65 per cent of gross domestic product, is expected to lead to a 1 to 2 per cent contraction of the economy in 2009.

Thai Prime Minster Abhisit Vejjajiva on Tuesday announced plans to launch a 1.4 trillion baht (39 billion dollars) stimulus package over the next three years to bolster domestic spending, create jobs and spur economic growth. (dpa)

Oz trade unions want Rudd Govt. to stop banking jobs going to India

Melbourne, Mar 14 (ANI): Australian trade unions want Prime Minster Kevin Rudd to stop banking jobs going offshore, after his government rejected calls to have the deposit guarantee withdrawn from banks that move jobs out of Australia.

The Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) has sought an urgent meeting with Rudd after ANZ Bank announced it was shifting 500 jobs to India.

The ACTU wants taxpayer funding of banks to be conditional on jobs staying in the country, and said banks could survive the global financial crisis without sacking workers.

“Those jobs don’t have to go. They can help us over the next 12 months as we get through this crisis,” ACTU president Sharan Burrow told Sky News.

The Finance Sector Union (FSU) says it is concerned the banks will use the financial turmoil as an excuse to shift more work overseas.

“Australia’s big banks remain the most profitable in the world, raking in huge profits while others around the globe fail,” FSU’s national secretary Leon Carter said.

“So, why is it that they are speeding up their plans to send more Australian banking jobs offshore?”

A spokesman for Rudd rejected FSU demands to have Government funding tied to jobs staying in Australia, News.com.au reported.

“The bank guarantee is to stabilise the financial system for the benefit of all Australians. It doesn’t mean the Government can make managerial decisions for individual banks,” he said.

ANZ, Australia’s fourth biggest bank, initially confirmed yesterday it would sack 500 processing office staff and move the work to India by the end of 2009, but later changed its line to say no jobs would be lost in Australia. It said it was creating 500 jobs in Bangalore, India, rather than Australia. (ANI)

British Foreign Secretary calls on Prime Minster

New Delhi, Jan 14 (ANI): British Foreign Secretary David Miliband met Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh here last evening.

Miliband also met leader of Opposition and senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Lal Krishna Advani.
Miliband’s visit comes at a time when the relations between India and Pakistan are quite tense over the terror attacks in Mumbai for which India has blamed Pakistan.

Earlier in the day, Miliband had met External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee and addressed a joint news conference with him.

He told reporters that he believes the Pakistan did not direct the Mumbai attacks, contradicting accusations from the Indian Government that state agencies were involved.

Miliband further added that it was clear the attacks originated from Pakistan and it had to crack down on militants operating on its soil, such as Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), which has been blamed for the Mumbai attacks.

Miliband warned that Pakistan faced its modern threat from within its borders and it needed to tackle the roots of militant organisations such as the LeT.

After his fruitful discussions with Mukherjee and Manmohan Singh, Miliband praised India for the ‘maturity’ and ‘wisdom’ of its response to the attacks, referring to New Delhi’s decision to respond diplomatically rather than militarily to the attacks.

The British Foreign Secretary is scheduled to visit Mumbai and address meetings at Taj and Trident Hotels, the sites of the terror attacks, before departing for Pakistan on January 16. (ANI)
