Swayamsewaks vs Outsiders syndrome killed BJP

New Delhi, Aug.30 (ANI): The bickering in the BJP sparked off by the drubbing in the 14th Lok Sabha polls has let open the can of worms in the saffron party.

BJP which claims to be “structured” and always talked about taking the high moral ground of being democratic, appears to be shattered like no one could expected, not even its principal rival party the Congress.

Apparently, trouble began brewing in the saffron camp when the suave, English spouting, tech savvy leaders, often termed as the outsiders by the swayamsewaks, took centre stage and became the key decision makers about the party’s politics.

BJP’s Prime Ministerial candidate and Loh Purush Lal Krishan Advani, whooiled hard to adorn Vajpayee’s inclusive image, miserably failed to strike a balance between the swayamsewaks and the outsiders.

Rajnath Singh did manage to win the hearts and minds of the core ideological workers but his hard-line approach and demagogic characteristics let him down among the league of the so called “outsiders”.

But, undoubtedly, Singh failed to demonstrate coherence and vision as the President of main opposition party of the Lok Sabha on key issues like Indo-US nuclear deal and response post 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks besides not being able to bring radical organizational reforms within the BJP.

Vacuum at the top-level offered room for the second-rung leaders to exercise and flaunt their authority in the decision-making.

All this gave confused or wrong signals to the cadres of the organization, for whom discipline has remained a binding force for decades.

It’s no secret that Arun Jaitley , Sushma Swaraj, Vekaiah Naidu and even

Ananth Kumar, considered close to Advani and draw their basic strength from him, showed reluctance and disregard in taking orders from party President Rajnath Singh ,which ultimately fuelled factionalism in the party.

Rajnath looked and sought Sangh Parivar’s shadow to counter his detractors in the party and soon become the blue-eyed boy of RSS.

Though RSS poster boy Rajnath publicly never displayed his annoyance or disagreement with Advani or his brigade but the prevailing discomfort was apparently visible on many occasions.

Discord came to the fore when Advani camp started taking different line and defying Rajnath Singh openly on key issues. In one such instance, ahead of the Lok Sabha polls, when Sudhanshu mittal was inducted by Singh as a Prabhari of North East , Jaitley defied Singh and made no bones in opposing the move . Off late Vasundhra who is considered close to Advani and his family, has shown reluctance to step down as the Leader of Opposition in Rajasthan State Assembly on Rajnath’s call.

There were several instances on which Advani and his followers held divergent views from Rajnath’s thinking and the authority of party President on party affairs and leadership waned dramatically in last three years.

Singh might have failed to impress or befriend hawks at centre like Jaitley ,Swaraj ,Naidu or Ananth Kumar but did get solace from the state leadership, he found a sense of loyalty in RSS’ icons Shivraj Singh Chauhan and Narendar Modi, he also shared good relationship with Chawal Baba Shivraj Singh Chauhan.

Advani’s love and penchant towards the intellectuals and journalists brought him extremely close to Arun Shourie, Jaswant Singh , Sudheendra Kulkarni. But this fascination distanced him from the core ideologues of the party.

In a bid to build up his inclusive and visionary image, Advani, who is seen as the architect of Babri mosque demolition by many quarters of the country, had somewhere lost the plot.

Jinnah fiasco did not move him and he tirelessly made efforts to rid himself from the image of “communal untouchable” to Mr. Secularist. The intelligentsia injected and indoctrinated into the BJP’s Prime Minister-in- waiting that until he bridged the gap with the Muslim community, he could not get to the 7 RCR .

The ideas like Akhand Bharat (united India), cultural nationalism, Ram temple in Ayodhya, which rode the party to the power thrice, took the backseat for Advani but carried on and taken forward by the BJP ‘s President Bal Apte report did held responsible the “prevalent inconsonance” among the top leadership for the defeat in the recent elections.

Today, BJP is in shambles. Once again, the RSS and the top leadership are trying to fix the discontent. But, by merely changing the leaders will these deep-rooted divergences and differences will be ironed out?

A mere reshuffle will not sort out the mess and RSS should think of new alternatives and draw new central leadership from the States, people like Shivraj Singh Chauhan, Narendra Modi, B.S Yediyurappa and Modi have proved their mettle in the states and will be more than willing to perform at the national stage.

Reshuffle can stave off the pressure and trouble temporarily but it is notnough to have a long term solution.

Arun Shourie’s suggestion to bomb the headquarters like the communists did, sounds dogmatic and radical, but sometimes last option is the only option.

And If BJP has to rebuild and resurrect itself before the 15th Lok Sabha elections, it has to pass many litmus tests and the landscape of the central leadership has to be changed. By Naveen Kapoor (ANI)

BJP leader Bal Apte meets RSS Chief

New Delhi, Aug.30 (ANI): Senior BJP leader Bal Apte met RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat for the second time in the last 24 hours on Sunday.

The two leaders are said to have discussed the latest developments in the BJP and Apte’s internal report on the reasons behind the BJP’s defeat in the recent General Elections.

Apte’s meeting took place after Bhagwat’s two meetings with Leader of Opposition L.K.Advani on Saturday and Sunday respectively.

Apte’s internal report is said to have squarely indicted and blamed senior party leader L.K.Advani, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and Jaitley as chief election manager for the BJP’s poll debacle.

The election loss had been attributed to a perceived lack of unity among the party leadership and the BJP’s failure to advertise and market its agenda among the people.

The report also said the projection of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi as the prime ministerial candidate by certain sections of the party and the personal attack on the Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh (which did not go down well with the people), were other key factors contributing to the defeat.

Other factors responsible were (1) The highlighting of the Varun Gandhi address in Pilibhit, which pushed aside other main issues; (2) The party’s failure to assess the public mood in Haryana and to concede a virtual walkover to the Congress; (3) That elections were lost in Delhi even before campaigning began; (4) The BJP’s failure to corner the Congress on 26/11 and (5) Allowing the Congress and the media to corner the BJP on the Kandahar hijack issue.

Sunday’s breakfast meeting between Advani and Bhagwat was the second between the two. They had earlier met on Saturday afternoon for about two hours at the RSS headquarters in Delhi – Keshavkunj to discuss various issues.

Saturday’s meeting took place amid reports that the RSS has readied a succession plan for the BJP. However, BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar told reporters at a press conference that no succession plan was discussed.

The RSS is believed to have told the BJP leadership to set its house in order. In a sign that this is being given serious thought, top brass of the BJP met at Advani’s residence yesterday morning for about two hours and briefed him about their discussions with Bhagwat on Friday.

The Rashtriya Swayam Sewak Sangh (RSS) reportedly asked the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leadership this morning to work on a blue print that it has handed over to ensure a smooth succession.

According to sources, Leader of Opposition L K Advani has been asked to preside over the exercise.

Sources also said that Advani had been told to step down after ensuring speedy implementation of the plan, but the RSS has left the timing of Advani’s exit to him.(ANI)

Jaitley denies existence of BJP internal report, justifies Jaswant’s expulsion

Shimla, Aug.20 (ANI): Senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley on Thursday denied existence or the tabling of any internal report prepared by Bal Apte at the three-day Chintan Baithak (brainstorming session) on reasons for the party’s debacle in this year’s general election. He also justified the expulsion of Jaswant Singh from the party.

Addressing a press conference here on the second day of the Chintan Baithak, Jaitley said: ” No such report has been introduced or tabled at the Chintan Baithak. There is no Bal Apte report or a report of this nature by any BJP leader.”

Jaitley’s reaction was in response to a Times Now channel revelation that it had access to an internal report that squarely indicts and blames senior party leader L.K.Advani, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and Jaitley as chief election manager for the BJP’s poll debacle.

According to Times Now, the report says the election loss has been attributed to a perceived lack of unity among the party leadership and the BJP’s failure to advertise and market its agenda among the people.

The report also says the projection of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi as the prime ministerial candidate by certain sections of the party and the personal attack on the Prime Minister, Dr.

According to the channel, the internal report apparently targets issues and not individuals.

On the Jaswant Singh issue, he said: “What you say and what you write is fine, but no party can give its member the liberty that while remaining the frontline leader you opt to go against the basic ideology or belief or talk publicly against it,”

He said the party had already taken a stance on Jinnah previously (with regard to Advani’s comments during a visit to Pakistan), which is well known to all.

He said that Advani had read out Jinnah’s Constituent Assembly speech before a Pakistani audience, and said: “Today, look where your country is languishing”.

“The context in the (Jaswant Singh) book is directly opposed and contradictory to the party’s take on it (as stated in the past). Saying Jinnah was demonised in India or take on Sardar Patel, is contrary not just to the party’s, but country’s opinion as well,” he added.

“We believe that Sardar Patel did the job of unifying the country. His criticism is against the party line. Alienation of Muslims in the country is also against the party line,” Jaitley said.

“If a member of the party contests an election against the party, that party expels him immediately. It does not issues show cause notices to him,” he added.

Asked for news on Vasundhara Raje, Jaitely said: ” I have come here to speak about what has been discussed in the ongoing meet and not any other issue.” (ANI)

Modi, Advani, Jaitely held responsible for BJP poll debacle: Internal report

New Delhi, Aug.20 (ANI): An internal report of the Bharatiya Janata Party, which is being discussed at the party’s Chintan Baithak in Shimla, has reportedly blamed senior party leader L.K.Advani, GUjarat Chief MInister Narendra Modi and Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha and the party’s chief election manager Arun Jaitely, besides other top leaders for the BJP’s debacle in this year’s general elections.

According to the Times Now channel, there was a perceived lack of unity among the party leadership and the BJP squarely failed to advertise its agenda among the general public.

Resentment against BJP at JD (U)’s national executive meet

New Delhi, May 30 (ANI): Resentful voices against Bharatiya Janata Party were heard at the Janata Dal (United)’s national executive meet which was held to discuss party’s performance in recent Lok Sabha polls here.

After the meet, JD (U) spokesperson Shivanand Tewari admitted there were some “irritants” in JD-U’s relations with BJP, however, he denied anybody demanding to part ways with the BJP.

“There was no talk of breaking our relationship with BJP in the meeting… In Orissa, (BJD chief) Naveen Patnaiak might have had some such problem with BJP but in Bihar no such problem has cropped up,” Tewari told media persons later.

While admitting that there were complaints by JD(U) units in a few states against BJP’s style of functioning under the alliance, Tewari denied there was no opposition from BJP to Nitish Kumar government’s initiatives for minority welfare schemes.

Bihar JD (U)’s President Rajiv Ranjan Singh wanted BJP to reconsider its stand on certain issues whereas Jharkhand JD-U chief Jaleshwar Mahto charged that State BJP leaders had worked against the two official candidates of JD-U, leading to their defeat, sources said.

Among other issues the National Democratic Alliance’s overall performance was also discussed at the JD (U)’s meet.

The two-day JD(U) national executive meet also deliberated on “certain issues raised by BJP just before the elections” and felt they had damaged the prospects of NDA, Tewari said.

“Just before the election, BJP raised certain issues which were not required…BJP must also contemplate what were the issues that damaged them as it was the bigger partner in NDA and the alliance’s Prime Ministerial candidate was also from BJP. For them it must be more shocking,” Tewari said.

He, however, refused to specify the issues raised by BJP. However, sources, said the relevance of BJP candidate Varun Gandhi’s controversial speech and other statements by other leaders were raised at the meet.

The two-day meet was attended by JD(U) President and NDA acting-convener Sharad Yadav, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, and party’s State Presidents, senior leaders and newly-elected party MPs. (ANI)

Manmohan takes oath as PM, 19 ministers sworn in

New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Friday took oath along with 19 Cabinet colleagues to begin a second five-year term at the head of a multi-party government in which his Congress party is the overwhelmingly dominant partner after a sweeping win in General Elections.

He is only the second prime minister after Jawaharlal Nehru to have a second innings after a successful five-year term.

There were four new faces in the first edition of the Union Cabinet that is expected to be followed up by another expansion of the Council of Ministers in the next few days. All the others were in the outgoing Cabinet. All but two were from the Congress party.

Overseen by President Pratibha Patil, Manmohan Singh, 76, was the first to take oath at a 45-minute function at the ornate Ashoka Hall of Rashtrapati Bhavan. This is the first time she has administered the oath of office.

In the front rows of the ceremony was a sombre-looking LK Advani, who was the prime ministerial candidate of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Media projected me as PM candidate: Modi

Ahmedabad, May 18 (ANI): Reacting to Janata Dal-United leader Sharad Yadav’s comment that the projection of Narendra Modi as a prime ministerial candidate was a mistake, the Gujarat Chief Minister on Monday said it was a media projection only and he had never projected himself as a candidate for the top post.

“My stand has always been clear that I am from Gujarat and will keep working for the state,” Modi told reporters here.

Modi also hoped that the new government at the Centre would help his state accelerate the pace of development.

“There is no full stop in politics. I want to appeal to the new government for support. Gujarat will take part in the development path more than earlier. Gujarat has played a major role in the development of the nation and it will continue to do so,” he added.

When asked about his party’s defeat in the elections, Modi said the people wanted the BJP to sit in the opposition and he accepts the verdict with humility.

“In democracy people’s verdict is final. This time people have mandated us to sit in the opposition again and the Congress and the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) have been given the mandate to rule,” he added. (ANI)

I won’t mind being Leader of Opposition: Murli Manohar Joshi

New Delhi, May 17 (ANI): Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Murli Manohar Joshi on Sunday said if given a chance, he could be ready to take up the job of the Leader of the Opposition.

“I am not in any race. But if I am given any responsibility by the party, I do not shy away. I am a humble BJP worker and will do as my party bids,” Joshi told reporters here.

When asked about Advani’s insistence that he does not want to be the Leader of Opposition, Joshi said the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate was not happy with the party’s dismal performance.

“This should not be looked from the negative perspective. Mr. Advani is the most important and senior most leader of the party. He takes decisions after due consideration. He does not want to be the Leader of Opposition again in view of the party’s dismal performance,” he added.

When asked about his party’s defeat in the general elections, Joshi said he found fault with the election campaign strategy. (ANI)

Sharad Yadav says projecting Modi as PM candidate caused harm to NDA

New Delhi, May 17 (ANI): Janata Dal- United (JDU) President Sharad Yadav today said that projection of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi as future prime ministerial candidate had caused immense harm to the Bharatiya Janata Party led NDA.

“Projecting Modi as a prime ministerial candidate had created confusion among the people’s mind. Since the NDA had already declared L K Advani as its Prime Minister candidate,” he said.

He said the other factor for the defeat of the NDA might be Varun Gandhi’s “hate statement”

“It may be right or wrong or Varun’s might have denied but his statement has caused immense damage. His statement was against the country’s unity and must have affected the polls,” he added.

Asked whether Gujarat riots too had affected the NDA’s prospects, Yadav said: “As far as Godhra is concerned, we have contested four elections after that. Whatever had happened in Godhra and after Godhra was inhuman. So, such incidents do have affect. (ANI)

Rahul Gandhi has all qualities to be PM: Jyotiraditya Scindia

New Delhi, May 16 (ANI): Congress leader and Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia on Saturday said that Rahul Gandhi has all the qualities and capabilities to be the Prime Minister.

“I am not undermining anyone but I am saying that Rahul Gandhi should be Prime Minister. He has all the qualities and capabilities to be the PM,” Scindia said.

Scindia further said that the whole country wanted Gandhi to be next PM.

“It is not the aspirations of the Congress party alone, aspirations not only of the youth of the country but all people of the country that he should get to the helm,” he added.

When asked whether Manmohan Singh should resign and Gandhi should be PM, Scindia said, “Manmohan Singh is the prime ministerial candidate of the Congress and absolutely once again will be the Prime Minster of the country. You asked for my personal opinion and I gave you my personal opinion,” Scindia added. (ANI)

When asked about the United Progressive Alliance’s (UPA) victory, Gandhi said the poor and youth of the country helped the Congress to win the elections.

“This country is progressing. The Congress party over the last five years believes that India is progressing quickly. This progress belongs everybody, large masses of this country. These elections are testament to the fact that the Congress believes in unification, in clean politics, in honest politics,” he added.

Gandhi further said that the people of Uttar Pradesh have rejected the politics of religion and caste.

“The people of UP have rejected the politics of religion, politics of caste. They have voted for development,” he added. (ANI)

Advani wants politicians to be idealistic

New Delhi/Bhubaneshwar, May 16 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party Prime Ministerial candidate L K Advani has said politics had to rise above personal agenda.

“Anyone who comes to politics must have a motivation, which goes far beyond any personnel agenda. It has to be idealistic,” said Advani, who was here to thank his campaign team.

Meanwhile, Congress hopefully got a shot in the arm when the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) said that it would support a secular coalition at the Central level.

“Another thing we will consider that we must be secular. We are secular. If at all there will be time to support any coalition, they should have secular nature,” Damodar Raut, BJD spokesperson said in Bhubaneshwar.

The Congress Party is the main opposition in Orissa. The BJP was part of the BJD Government in Orissa before the latter withdrew from the National Democratic Alliance just before the polls. (ANI)

UPA leads over NDA as counting on

New Delhi, May 16 (ANI): The Congress-led UPA is surging ahead of the BJP-led NDA in early trends as counting is underway for 543 Lok Sabha constituencies.

As per latest reports, the UPA is leading in 214 seats and the NDA in 135 seats. The Third Front is leading in 57 and Others are leading in 28.

The Congress-led UPA is leading in Kerala and Rajasthan while the NDA is ahead in Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Himachal Pradesh. The Congress is also leading in BSP-stronghold of Uttar Pradesh.

Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi is ahead in Amethi, Sachin Pilot in Ajmer, P Chidambaram in Sivaganga and Shashi Tharoor in Thiruvananthapuram were also ahead.

BJP candidate Jaswant Singh is leading in Darjeeling.

From Congress, Janardhan Poojari and Margaret Alva are straggling in Karnataka. Commerce and Industry Minister Kamal Nath is trailing in Chhindwara in Madhya Pradesh while former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda is leading in Hassan in Karnataka.

RJD chief Lalu Prasad is leading in Pataliputra, but trailing in Siwan in Bihar.

Among the Congress candidates who are leading in early trends are Priya Dutt (Mumbai North), Jyotiraditya Scindia (Guna), Pranab Mukherjee (Jangipur) and Sandeep Dikshit (East Delhi).

The BJP’s Prime Ministerial candidate L K Advani is ahead in Gandhinagar in Gujarat. Other candidates from BJP including Vinod Khanna, Sushma Swaraj and Varun Gandhi are leading from Gurdaspur, Vidisha and Pilibhit respectively.

Counting began at 8:00 a.m. in all 28 states and seven union territories. Votes polled in elections to state assemblies of Andhra Pradesh, Orissa and Sikkim are also being counted simultaneously.

The results are expected to decide the fate of 8,070 contestants, including 556 women.

Around 1,080 counting centres have been set up across 28 states and seven union territories with 4,260 counting halls.

A little over half of the 71.377 crore registered voters cast their ballots through Electronic Voting Machines in the five-phased elections that began on April 16 and ended on May 13. (ANI)

‘Lotus will not be allowed to bloom,’ says Paswan

New Delhi, May 15 (ANI): The “lotus will not be allowed to bloom” at the Centre at any cost, said Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) chief Ram Vilas Paswan.

“We will not support BJP at any cost to form a government and will make all efforts to ensure that a secular government is formed,” he told reporters on Friday.

Paswan also confirmed that he had had meetings with Janata Dal (United) (JD-U) chief Sharad Yadav and Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) president Ajit Singh.

LJP secretary general Abdul Khaliq dismissed any possibility of his party switching over to the NDA and downplayed the issue of NDA leaders calling up Paswan.

When asked whether he was still with the UPA, Paswan said: “I am in UPA and also a Minister in the government.” Asked if he would remain in UPA, he said there were two possibilities that could emerge.

“If UPA can get majority, there will be no problem. The other scenario is the UPA does not get majority. In that situation, we three parties in the Fourth Front would jointly take a decision on the methodology of forming a secular government.”

Asked whether the results would have been better if the UPA allies had fought the polls jointly in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, Paswan said: “We wished all fought unitedly. But Congress preferred to contest the elections alone in the two states. But even then, our results will be good.”

“At this stage we want to clarify that LJP, RJD and SP will take decision as a bloc and not as individual parties. SP is not a part of UPA till now. But it will play and important role in forming the next government,” he said.

Regarding the relationship with the Left parties, Paswan said it was not bad, but cordial.

Meanwhile, in Lucknow, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) has rubbished reports of talking to or joining the BJP-led NDA or the UPA-led by the Congress.

The BSP said no secret meeting had taken place between party chief Mayawati and BJP’s prime ministerial candidate LK Advani.

The BSP’s support is being considered crucial to both the BJP and the Congress.

Party insiders say that Mayawati would prefer “not to support a BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party)-led government that would antagonise Muslim voters.”

The BSP is tipped to get around 30 seats.

In Andhra Pradesh, Telugu superstar Chiranjeevi’s Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) on Friday said it is keeping its doors open for post-poll alliances.

“Any political party has to act in such a way that it should never close any doors post-elections. PRP is also doing the same thing,” PRP general secretary Allu Aravind told reporters here when asked whether it will align with Congress.

Arvind also took a dig at the Third Front and said it was a “fractured front at present as one of its members has packed and taken his baggage out of it” in a apparent reference to the TRS, which switched sides to NDA recently.

There is intense speculation that Congress is trying to reach out to Chiranjeevi to get his support both at the state and the Centre. (ANI)

Modi to meet Jayalalithaa, Advani meets Chautala

Ahmedabad/New Delhi, May 15 (ANI): The Bharataiya Janata Party (BJP) confirmed on Friday that Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi will be meeting All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) Chief J Jayalalithaa in Chennai this afternoon.

The BJP has appointed Modi as the main point person to negotiate with Jayalalithaa for a possible tie-up with the NDA.

Both the BJP and the Congress are said to have good equations with Jayalalithaa, and no one knows which way she will swing.

Jayalalithaa is expected to be a key player on government formation.

The Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Prime Ministerial candidate Lal Krishna Advani also met Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) Chief Om Prakash Chautala to discuss the post-poll strategy.

Chautala met Advani at the latter’s residence. Senior BJP leader Sushma Swaraj also joined them. Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) leader Suresh Soni and RLD Chief Ajit Singh are expected to meet Advani later in the day.

Other senior BJP leaders, including M Venkaiah Naidu and Arun Jaitley, are meanwhile engaged in wooing more parties like TDP and AIADMK.

A meeting of NDA chief ministers called in New Delhi to discuss post-poll strategy has been postponed with a senior BJP leader attributing it to unavailability of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

“The meeting of NDA chief ministers was not feasible, as Nitish Kumar could not come to Delhi, as he had to attend to ceremonies relating to his wife’s second death anniversary.

The meeting is likely to be held after final results are announced tomorrow. BJP President Rajnath Singh had held a luncheon meeting with Soni and another senior RSS leader Indresh yesterday, where they discussed future course of action for the party and its alliance. (ANI)

CPM sees red over US envoy’s meeting with Indian leaders

New Delhi, May 14 (ANI): Communist Party of India- Marxist (CPM) on Thursday lashed out at US Charge d’Affaires A. Peter Burleigh for what it termed an interference in Indian elections.

“US is welcome to find out what is happening on the political situation but cannot interfere in the internal political matters of the country,” CPM Politburo member and parliamentary group leader, Sitaram Yechury, told reporters here.

Burleigh, who took over as the chef de mission in New Delhi over a month ago, met the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Lal Krishna Advani on Wednesday. The two are said to discussed bilateral ties and the regional situation in Pakistan as well as the future of the Indo-US civilian nuclear cooperation.

Burleigh also held talks with Praja Rajyam Party President Chiranjeevi and Chandrababu Naidu of the Telugu Desam Party. The meeting with Naidu triggered speculations that the US diplomat is trying to persuade Naidu not to back a Third Front Government.

Meanwhile, the U.S. embassy has denied allegations of interference in the Indian poll process.

“It was a very routine visit by the American diplomats. It was planned a long time in advance. Peter Burleigh asked for a meeting with the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Lal Krishna Advani a month ago. The meeting is part of the consultations before Hillary Clinton’s visit to India. There is no effort to interfere in the elections in India. Nor is there an effort to involve America in Indian coalition politics,” a US Embassy spokesman said. (ANI)

CPI confident of forming govt. at Centre: Raja

New Delhi, May 14 (ANI): Communist Party of India (CPI) leader D. Raja on Thursday exuded confidence about the Third Front forming an alternative government at the Centre, and said the Front would neither support the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government nor the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

“We are confident that we will be in a position to form an alternative government. We will not support a Congress-led government at the Centre and we will also not allow BJP to take advantage of any situation,” D. Raja told reporters here.

Raja dismissed the exit polls as speculation, and said the actual situation will emerge only after the 16th May results.

“The Left had appealed to the people to vote for an alternative secular government at the Centre and an alternative non-BJP non-Congress government. I think people have given that support. It will be known on the 16th,” he added.

The CPI leader also expressed confidence that new parties would join them in future.

“There are great possibilities of a new alignment being forged after counting of votes. It is expected that new forces will join us, but it is not the time to identify them. You leave it to the parties,”aja said.

When asked about the meeting between BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Lal Krishna Advani and US Charge d’Affairs Peter Burleigh on Wednesday, Raja said no external power should try to interfere in political affairs of the country. (ANI)

Congress, BJP discuss strategies to shore up their numbers

New Delhi, May 14 (ANI): As the countdown begins for the 16th May results, the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday discussed strategies to shore up their numbers for government formation.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi held a meeting at her residence to discuss the party’s strategy for possible post-poll alliances.

Congress Spokesperson Jayanthi Natarajan expressed confidence that her party would lead the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government post- 16th May.

When asked whether the Congress would do any business with the Left, Natarajan said the decision will be taken by the party and the leadership.

The BJP also held its strategy session in the morning at the residence of its prime ministerial candidate, Lal Krishna Advani, to discuss post poll alliances.

BJP President Rajnath Singh and Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi were present at the meeting.

BJP Spokesperson Prakash Javadekar discounted the Left supporting a Congress-led government, saying he did not see a major role for the Left.

“Left is saying no BJP, no Congress. Let them pursue the line,” Javadekar said.

Javadekar also referred to political pitfalls in stitching up alliances.

“If the Congress takes Left’s support, it’s ally in West Bengal, Trinamool Congress, may snap ties,” he added. (ANI)

US Charge d’Affairs meets Advani

New Delhi, May 13 (ANI): US Charge d’Affairs Peter Burleigh on Wednesday met BJP’s Prime Ministerial candidate L K Advani here and discussed the bilateral ties and regional matters, particularly developments in Pakistan.

A US Embassy spokesman said Indo-US relations and its future prospects figured in the discussions between Advani and Burleigh.

The meeting was part of “routine consultations”, a US Embassy spokesperson said.

Burleigh had earlier met senior BJP leader M Venkaiah Naidu.

The Indo-US civil nuclear deal and developments in Pakistan came up for discussion during that meeting, Naidu had said then.

Burleigh has also met TDP leader N Chandrababu Naidu in Hyderabad a few days back. (ANI)

Sharad Yadav says JD (U) is with NDA

New Delhi, May 13 (ANI): As confusion continues over the future of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, senior leader of Janata Dal (United) Sharad Yadav on Wednesday said his party was with the NDA.

“As I said, we are in the NDA. There is a declared prime ministerial candidate of the NDA. We have campaigned in the country so that NDA can attain majority,” Yadav said.

Nitish Kumar had proved his loyalty to the NDA after attending a meeting on Sunday.

Yadav also said that the Telangana Rashtriya Samiti (TRS) would support the NDA at the Central level and join an alliance in the state, which would be strongest against the Congress.

“I can say regarding the TRS that there is no change in the stand. It will support the NDA in New Delhi at Central level and in Andhra Pradesh, it will support as per the situation, the strongest alliance against the Congress,” he said.

The presence of K Chandrashekhar Rao, TRS chief, served as a morale booster for the NDA ahead of the final round of polls.

Leaders of the Congress are reportedly trying to woo back coalition partners like the Rashtriya Janata Dal.

The Congress party has already indicated it is willing to take support of former allies, who supported the government for four years, before withdrawing it over the civilian nuclear deal last year.
