Author of Winnie the Pooh sequel releases preview ‘exposition’

London, Sept 4 (ANI): Author David Benedictus is set to pen the first sequel of AA Milne’s ‘The House at Pooh Corner’, more than 80 years after the original.

He released an exposition previewing the characters’ thoughts on the forthcoming book, reports the Telegraph.

Pooh and Piglet, Christopher Robin and Eeyore were last seen in the Forest – oh, can it really be eighty years ago? But dreams have a logic of their own and it is as if the eight years have passed in a day.

Looking over my shoulder, Pooh says: ‘Eighty is a good number really but it could just as well be eighty weeks or days or minutes as years,’ and I say: ‘Let’s call it eighty seconds, and then it’ll be as though no time has passed at all.’

Piglet says: ‘I tried to count to eighty once, but when I got to 37 the numbers started jumping out at me and turning cartwheels, especially the sixes and nines.’

‘They do that when you’re least expecting it,’ says Pooh. “But are you really going to write us new adventures?” Christopher Robin asks. “Because we rather liked the old ones.”

“I didn’t like the ones with the Heffalumps in,” adds Piglet, shuddering.

“And can they end with a little smackerel of something?” asks Pooh, who may have put on a few ounces in eighty years.

“He’ll get it wrong,” says Eeyore, “see if he doesn’t. What does he know about donkeys?”

Of course Eeyore is right, because I don’t know; I can only guess.

But guessing can be fun too.

And if occasionally I think I have guessed right I shall reward myself with a chocolate biscuit, one of those with chocolate on one side only so you don’t get sticky fingers and leave marks on the paper, and if sometimes I am afraid that I have guessed wrong I shall just have to go without.

“We’ll know,” says Christopher Robin. “We’ll help you get it right if we can.”

And Pooh and Piglet smile and nod their heads, but Eeyore says: “Not that you are likely to. Nobody ever does.” (ANI)

Hayden Panettiere left aghast by her own naked scene

Washington, Jul 9 (ANI): American actress Hayden Panettiere was left shocked to see so much of her flesh being exposed on the final version of her new movie ‘I Love You, Beth Cooper’ during a nude scene.

Panettiere, 19, stripped down totally in the new comedy, but she did not expect to see much of her naked body due to the U.S. PG-13 rating, which allows kids under 13 to see the movie when accompanied by an adult.

But the actress sank down in her seat when she viewed the scene during a recent preview of the film, as her “side boobage” filled up the entire screen.

“It’s one of those things that you forget how much of your flesh is in it, until I saw it again and then I was like, ‘Duck, duck!’. I knew they were doing it (filming a nude scene), but I didn’t know it would be so big on the screen!” Contactmusic quoted her as saying. (ANI)

Potter fans conned with ‘free early movie premiere link’ by hackers

London, June 27 (ANI): Harry Potter fans are being conned with a phoney link placed by cyber criminals that claims to lead them to a free sneak preview of the new film.

Hackers have been trying to trap fans into watching the soon to be released Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince with the link.

Viewers are told they must download and install a “streamviewer” in order to watch the premiere, which in reality downloads “malware” that secretly records personal information such as passwords, and bank card numbers.

Fraudsters then gather these details to sell them over the World Wide Web or use the information for other swindles.

Michael Greene, vice president of Product Strategy for PC Tools, said fans were being targeted due to the hype surrounding the new release.

“It’s a case of curiosity kills the cat… If you want to see the Harry Potter video before it’s released you are going to click on the link. But it’s likely you’ll get an infection on your computer,” Sky News quoted him as saying.

“It’s not uncommon to target major events. The malwriters need an audience in order to deliver the malware,” he added. (ANI)

Herschel telescope obtains images of ‘whirlpool galaxy’ as first test observation

Paris, June 20 (ANI): Herschel, the largest infrared space telescope ever flown, has obtained images of the famous ‘whirlpool galaxy’ for a first test observation.

European Space Agency’s (ESA’s) Herschel opened its ‘eyes’ on June 14 and the Photoconductor Array Camera and Spectrometer obtained images of M51, which is popularly dubbed the ‘whirlpool galaxy’.

Scientists obtained images in three colours, which clearly demonstrate the superiority of Herschel, the largest infrared space telescope ever flown.

This image shows the ‘whirlpool galaxy’, first observed by Charles Messier in 1773, who provided the designation Messier 51 (M51).

This spiral galaxy lies relatively nearby, about 35 million light-years away, in the constellation Canes Venatici. M51 was the first galaxy discovered to harbour a spiral structure.

The image is a composite of three observations taken at 70, 100 and 160 microns, taken by Herschel’s Photoconductor Array Camera and Spectrometer (PACS) on June 14 and 15, immediately after the satellite’s cryocover was opened on June 14.

Herschel, launched only a month ago, is still being commissioned and the first images from its instruments were planned to arrive only in a few weeks.

But, engineers and scientists were challenged to try to plan and execute daring test observations as part of a ‘sneak preview’ immediately after the cryocover was opened.

The objective was to produce a very early image that gives a glimpse of things to come.

To the left is the best image of M51, taken by NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope, with the Multiband Imaging Photometer for Spitzer (MIPS), juxtaposed with the Herschel observation on 14 and 15 June at 160 microns.

The obvious advantage of the larger size of the telescope is clearly reflected in the much higher resolution of the image. Herschel reveals structures that cannot be discerned in the Spitzer image.

These images clearly demonstrate that the shorter the wavelength, the sharper the image, which is a very important message about the quality of Herschel’s optics, since PACS observes at Hersche”s shortest wavelengths.

Produced from the very first test observation, these images lead scientists to conclude that the optical performance of Herschel and its large telescope is so far meeting their high expectations. (ANI)

NASA releases interactive 3-D views of International Space Station, new mars rover

Washington, May 8 (ANI): NASA has released an interactive, 3-D photographic collection of internal and external views of the International Space Station (ISS) and a model of the next Mars rover.

NASA and Microsoft’s Virtual Earth team developed the online experience with hundreds of photographs and Microsoft’s photo imaging technology called Photosynth.

Using a click-and-drag interface, viewers can zoom in to see details of the space station’s modules and solar arrays or zoom out for a more global view of the complex.

“Photosynth brings the public closer to our spaceflight equipment and hardware,” said Bill Gerstenmaier, associate administrator for Space Operations at NASA Headquarters in Washington.

“The space station pictures are not simulations or graphic representations but actual images taken recently by astronauts while in orbit. Although you’re not flying 220 miles above the Earth at 17,500 miles an hour, it allows you to navigate and view amazing details of the real station as though you were there,” he added.

The software uses photographs from standard digital cameras to construct a 3-D view that can be navigated and explored online.

“This stunning collection of photographs using Microsoft’s Photosynth interactive 3-D imaging technology provides people around the world with an exciting new way to explore the space station and learn about NASA’s upcoming Mars Science Laboratory mission,” said S. Pete Worden, director of NASA’s Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, California.

“This collaboration with Microsoft offers the public the opportunity to participate in future exploration using this innovative technology,” he added.

The Mars rover imagery gives viewers an opportunity to preview the hardware of NASA’s Mars Science Laboratory, currently being assembled for launch to the Red Planet in 2011.

According to Fuk Li, manager of NASA’s Mars Exploration Program at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, “We are making this enhanced viewing experience available from the Mars Science Laboratory project because we’re eager for the public to share in the excitement that’s building for this mission.” (ANI)

CSX profit down but beats Wall Street view

CHICAGO (Reuters) – CSX Corp (CSX.N), the No. 3 U.S. railroad, on Tuesday posted a better-than-expected quarterly net profit, sending its stock up 7 percent as it took steps to cut costs and keep prices steady amid a steep drop in freight volumes due to the recession.

The Jacksonville, Florida-based company reported first-quarter net income of $246 million or 62 cents per share, down nearly 30 percent from $351 million or 85 cents per share in the same quarter in 2008.

Analysts, on average, expected earnings per share for the quarter of 51 cents, according to Reuters Estimates.

In after-market trade, CSX shares were up 7.2 percent at $30.60 from their official closing price on the New York Stock Exchange at $28.39.

Revenue in the quarter fell 17 percent to $2.25 billion from $2.71 billion on a 17 percent decline in freight volumes.

The railroad said the decline was due to “significant weakness in industrial production, housing starts, and consumer spending, as well as in the agriculture and energy sectors” and it was taking action to cut costs.

“We are taking tough actions to right-size our operations in this challenging environment,” Chief Executive Michael Ward said in a statement. The railroad said a “wide range” of productivity initiatives had helped it trim operating expenses for the quarter by 17 percent to $1.73 billion from $2.09 billion a year ago.

CSX cut its fuel bill for the quarter to $191 million from $441 million last year.

In a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, CSX said that automotive-related freight volumes were down 53 percent, metal products fell 48 percent, lumber declined 25 percent, while phosphates and fertilizers dropped 34 percent. Coal carloads were down 6 percent.

Revenue per carload — a telling benchmark for the railroads as it provides an indication of how strong their prices are — was virtually flat at $1,584 from $1,580 in the first quarter of last year, CSX said in the filing.

Credit Suisse analyst Chris Ceraso described the revenue per carload as a “very big surprise” in a research note to clients. Credit Suisse had expected CSX to post a 9 percent decline in volumes. Ceraso said the drop in fuel costs was also another big surprise.

“We think it is more likely that the railroads fall short of the consensus rather than surprise to the upside,” the Credit Suisse analyst wrote earlier in the day in an earnings preview note on CSX.

The major U.S. railroads have all posted robust profits in recent quarters despite weak freight volumes, thanks to strong pricing. But with the precipitous decline in the U.S. economy over the past few months, analysts are watching the railroads carefully to see if they can maintain high prices in the downturn.

According to data released by the Association of American Railroads last week, U.S. railroads saw freight volumes down 16.7 percent in the first 13 weeks of 2009.

Extensions add new functions to OpenOffice

Kaufbeuren, Germany – The basic version of the free office software suite, OpenOffice, packs in a lot of functionality. Yet for some users it’s just not enough. Fortunately it doesn’t need to be. A variety of extensions, most available for free, can be used to add even more pep to the standard version. This type of modular software construction is familiar to users of web browsers like Firefox and Opera as an effective way to integrate expanded capabilities. As with OpenOffice itself, these are free software add-ons developed by enthusiastic developers from the OpenOffice community.

“The spectrum of extensions ranges from tweaks to small details up to extensive expansions of the core functionality,” says Florian Effenberger, spokesman for the OpenOffice. org project.

The central English-language repository is available at http://extensions.services.openoffice.org and includes roughly 300 extensions. Yet, not all extensions are indexed there. Effenberger presumes that hundreds more of the little utilities are out there as well.

One popular type of extension is document templates. Another is PDF Import Extension, which enables users to edit PDF files. While the basic version of OpenOffice can open files of that kind, it can’t work edits back into the original very effectively. Also, adjusting the size of columns and rows in the Calc spreadsheet software can be tiring. CalcEasyToolbar makes it easier.

Presenter Console is a potentially useful aid for users who frequently create presentations in the OpenOffice module Impress. It provides a preview of the new slide, but only on the speaker’s monitor. Presentations with heavy multimedia content can be put on a diet using Presentation Minimizer. The extension makes presentations easier to open and e-mail.

If the user encounters an unknown term, Wikipedia can frequently provide quick assistance. The OOoWikipedia allows users to query the free encyclopedia from within the software directly. Anyone looking to create a Wikipedia article themselves can benefit from Wiki Publisher: a Wizard helps prepare articles composed in OpenOffice’s word processor Writer for publication on the Web. Along similar lines, the Weblog Publisher makes it easy to compose blog entries.

The extensions are easy to install. One option is to double click the already downloaded extensions with the file ending .”oxt.” The on-screen instructions will make it easy from there. The alternative is to use the Extension Manager’ in OpenOffice under the Extras menu. Extensions can be added, deactivated, or removed there.

Yet not every extension runs with every variant of OpenOffice. The safest bet, according to spokesman Florian Effenberger, is to use the current version, OpenOffice version 3. Hasselhoff preparing teen daughters for pop career

London, Apr 1 (ANI): American actor David Hasselhoff’s teenage daughters are set to follow in his footsteps with a pop career of their own.

Hasselhoff, 56, who started his own singing career towards the end of the 1980s, calls his two girls Taylor Ann, 18, and Hayley Amber, 16, ‘The Hoff Drops’.

The ‘Baywatch’ star is preparing them for their music career, and has looked into enlisting top songwriters and even booked studio time for them.

As per Radio 1 DJ Scott Mills, who had a sneak preview of the two pop stars in action, the teen singers sound just like Disney sensation Miley Cyrus.

“David really wants it to work – it’s all he talks about,” the Sun quoted him as saying.

“He will be advising them, but he’s looking for full-time management for them. He’s sorted it all out and he’s very hands-on.

“They’re recording a song together. It’s like Miley Cyrus-ish pop – it’s teen pop,” he added.

Mills also revealed that even though Hasselhoff would be part of the girls’ careers, they were not too keen on all of his ideas, especially his choice of band name.

“David wants to name them but the kids won’t let him,” he added.

Tom Hanks may turn on “big bang machine” once it’s fixed

London, Feb 17 (ANI): Actor Tom Hanks has agreed to turn on the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) once it has been fixed.

The LHC, which is the world’s most powerful particle accelerator, based at the European particle-physics facility CERN in Geneva, is currently being repaired after breaking down in September last year, just nine days after circulating its first proton beams.

Tom Hanks recently visited CERN to promote his new film Angels and Demons, in which he plays Harvard University symbologist Robert Langdon, who is investigating a plot to annihilate the Vatican with 0.25 grams of antimatter stolen from CERN.

“I asked Hanks if he’d like to come back for the switch-on and he said ‘yes’,” Steve Myers, CERN’s director of accelerators and technology told Nature News, after giving Hanks a guided tour of the LHC’s 7,000-tonne ATLAS experiment on February 13.

Hanks said he expected to use a large, Frankenstein-esque knife switch to bring the 4.1-billion dollars accelerator back to life later this year, rather than the more conventional mouse-click.

“CERN is a beautiful place,” he announced at a press conference held after an eight-and-a-half minute preview of the film. “Magic is not happening here, magic is being explained here,” he added.

CERN’s head of communications, James Gillies, confirmed that the facility “would be delighted” to have Hanks there to re-start the LHC.

Angels and Demons includes footage of the LHC and images of sinister canisters that hold the antimatter suspended inside them. (ANI)
