Trial of Sri Lanka general adjourned

Colombo, Apr.6 (ANI): The first of two courts martial set up to try Sri Lanka’s ex-army chief, Sarath Fonseka, has been adjourned, the BBC reports.

The trial, which charges Gen Fonseka of participating in politics while in uniform, was due to resume on Tuesday, but it was adjourned because of an outstanding case lodged with Sri Lanka’s Court of Appeal challenging the legality of the courts martial.

Another court martial charging the general of breaking army procurement rules is also set to resume on Tuesday, but this may also be adjourned on the same grounds.

General Fonseka says all the charges are politically motivated and an attempt to bar him from forthcoming elections.

He was arrested by the army last month, after losing presidential elections to incumbent Mahinda Rajapaksa in January.

General Fonseka led Sri Lanka’s army when it defeated Tamil Tiger rebels last year but he and President Rajapaksa later fell out over who should take credit for winning the war.

Sri Lanka’s parliamentary are set to take place on Thursday. (ANI)

Concerned US asks Pak for immediate resolution of explosive Baloch issue

Islamabad, Sep.2 (ANI): Expressing concerns over the Baloch insurgency, the United States has asked the Pakistan Government to settle all outstanding issues with the Baloch people as soon as possible.

According to sources, three US Senators met President Asif Ali Zardari and asked him to resolve the crisis while expressing concerns over the deteriorating law and order situation in the region.

Senators Carl Levin and Jack Reed of the US Senate’s Armed Services Committee and Edward Kaufman of the Foreign Relations Committee stressed on the need for complete peace and stability in Balochistan during their talks with Zardari, The Dawn reports.

The US Congressional delegation led by Senator Carl Levin, which is on a visit to Pakistan currently, told Zardari that the stability of Balochistan was imperative for success in the ‘war on terror’.

Briefing media person after the meeting, Presidential spokesman Farhatullah Babar said Zardari urged the senators to try to hasten the reimbursement and supply of critically needed equipment, including helicopter gunships.

Zardari also requested Washington to speed up the process for the early adoption of the Kerry Lugar Bill, and also asked the White House to release all outstanding dues amounting to 1.6 billion dollars in order to help Islamabad counter extremism effectively.

“Payment of outstanding amounts in the support funds is important for the security forces to continue the ongoing military operation against militants,” The Dawn quoted Babar, as saying.

“President Zardari said attaching conditions to aid would be counter-productive and impart a transactional nature to the relationship which must be avoided,” he added.

Zardari also welcomed the Obama Administration’s commitment to help Pakistan address its increasing energy needs. (ANI)

Zardari claims that Taliban has been defeated in Swat

Islamabad, Aug.19 (ANI): Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari has claimed that the Taliban has been defeated in the Swat Valley.

In an interview with the News ahead of his meeting with US Special Envoy for Afghanistan and Pakistan Richard Holbrooke, Zardari said Pakistan was a united nation and would always stand united against its enemy.

“We are one nation and would stay united at every crucial moment to defeat the enemy,” Zardari said.

When asked how he viewed the meetings of Holbrooke with JUI chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman and JI Secretary General Liaquat Baloch, Zardari said: “Politics is the name of dialogue and issues could be sorted out only politically.”

When enquired how he would counter the opposition from some of parties like the JUI and the ANP on the issue of allowing political parties to work in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), he said all such issues would be sorted out with dialogues.

“People give up their positions, sometime, in view of national interest. So we will be able to manage this by moving from our standard positions on the subject,” Zardari said.

Later, Presidential spokesperson Farhatullah Babar told media persons that Zardari, during his meeting with Holbrooke, told the US ambassador that Pakistan’s industrial growth and export potential was severely hampered because of the war against the former Soviet Union as well as the rising militancy which was a result of the Cold War politics.

“If these factors had not hampered the country’s progress Pakistan would not have been faced with the type of economic problems it is facing today,” Babar quoted Zardari, as saying. (ANI)

US warns Pak over multi-billion rupee Chinese locomotive procurement scam

Islamabad, July 11 (ANI): The United States has reprimanded Pakistan for the multi billion rupee Railway scam in which an US firm was denied a fair chance to secure a contract of a whopping 12.5 billion rupees.

According to The News, US Senator, Robert P Casey Jr has written a letter to President Asif Ali Zardari telling him about the massive irregularities committed by some of the Pakistan Railway Board’s top officials while purchasing 75 electric locomotives from China.

The two page letter, which was delivered to the Pakistan Embassy in Washington recently, warned Zardari that the ‘insufficient transparency and demonstrated irregularities’ could hamper country’s reputation in the international community and would seriously undermine the much needed confidence in its governing institutions.

Casey, in his strong-worded letter, has asked Zardari to stop the finalization of the deal between the Chinese firm and the Railways Ministry.

“I am concerned to hear that notwithstanding the clear pattern of irregularities in the bid process, Pakistan Railways is now moving towards finalising the purchase order. I feared that the finalisation of the tender after a process marked by insufficient transparency and demonstrated irregularities could negatively impact Pakistan’s reputation in the international community and undermine needed confidence in its governing institutions,” the letter stated.

“I look forward to hearing from you that how interests of my constituents are protected equitably,” it added.

Despite several shortcomings, the Pakistan Railways had awarded a tender to a Chinese firm to supply 75 locomotives, and deliberately ignored the American company’s bid.

However, Presidential spokesman Farhatullah Babar has denied receiving any such letter.

“I have not heard about it,” said Babar.

Meanwhile, the top honchos of the Railways Ministry functionaries have confessed before the National Assembly’s Special Committee on Railways about the alleged irregularities. (ANI)

Ex-Miss USA says Sarah Palin can offer ‘so much more’

Washington, July 10 (ANI): Responding to Sarah Palin’s resignation from the post of Alaska Governor, former Miss USA Shanna Moakler has said that the former Republican Vice-Presidential candidate can still do “so much more”.

The reality star has said that Palin certainly has the potential to really make an impact.

“I think she can make a lot more money if she resigns, she has a lot more to offer us than her current position,” Fox News quoted Moakler as saying at Diddy’s White Party over the weekend.

Moakler hit headlines earlier this year when she resigned from her position at the co-executive director of the Miss California pageant, after Donald Trump announced that the controversial Carrie Prejean could keep her crown.

Miss California Prejean came under fire after she voiced her “traditional” belief against same-sex marriage during the interview portion of the Miss USA pageant. (ANI)

Voting begins in Indonesia’s presidential election

Jayapura (Indonesia), July 8 (DPA) Indonesians begin voting Wednesday in only the second direct presidential elections in the country’s history, with incumbent Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is widely expected to win a second five-year term.
Voting commenced at 7 a.m. in Indonesia’s easternmost Papua province, in the sprawling archipelago of more than 17,000 islands spanning three different time zones.

More than 176 million of the country’s population of more than 230 million are eligible to vote at 450,000 polling stations.

Around 240,000 police have been deployed across the world’s most populous Muslim-majority country to provide security at polling stations, especially in restive Papua, where ethnic tensions are high and violence marred legislative polls in April.

Incumbent Yudhoyono, 59, one of the former Suharto-era generals with a cleaner reputation, will be competing for a second five-year term against former president Megawati Sukarnoputri and current Vice President Jusuf Kalla.

Widely known by his initials SBY, Yudhoyono is hoping to win a clear majority to avoid a September runoff. A candidate is required to win more than 50 percent of the votes and at least 20 percent of the vote in half of the country’s 33 provinces to win without a second-round vote.

In the April legislative election, Yudhoyono’s ruling Democratic Party garnered 20 percent of vote – up from seven percent in 2004 – to become the largest party in Parliament.

UAE contributes 500,000 dollars to UN for Bhutto’s assassination probe

Islamabad, July 4 (ANI): The United Arab Emirates (UAE) will contribute 500,000 dollars to the United Nations (UN) Trust Fund, for a UN commission enquiry into the former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto’s assassination.

Presidential spokesperson, Farhatullah Babar said the UAE Embassy had already informed the Pakistan Foreign Office (FO) of the decision.

The three member UN commission would be headed by Chile’s U.N. Ambassador, Heraldo Munoz.

The other two members of the commission are the former Indonesian attorney general Marzuki Darusman, and Ireland’s former deputy police commissioner Peter Fitzgerald, The News reports.

The commission would only enquire after the facts and circumstances of Bhutto’s death. Further action against perpetrators would be taken by Pakistan, Babar said.

The commission is expected to arrive in Pakistan this month and complete its work within six months, he added.

Bhutto was killed on Decmber 27, 2007 in a gun-and-suicide bomb attack while leaving an election rally in Rawalpindi. (ANI)

What made Jacko a legend

New Delhi, June 28 (ANI): Remembering the ebb and flow of late King of Pop Michael Jackson’s career, the critics are busy jotting down facts that made the singer a legend.

And, now, a report shedding light on such facts reveals that Jackson’s Billie Jean made him the first black artist whose video to have his video broadcast on MTV.

Published by the China Daily, the report reveals that another reason behind why Jackson was so famous was the fact that he owned the rights to the South Carolina State Anthem South Carolina on My Mind, recorded by Hank Martin and Buzz Arledge.

Jackson was so popular that his waxwork features in five Madame Tussauds museums across the world. Only Elvis Presley and Madonna have more Tussaud figures-they have six each.

The report reckons that Jackson’s total lifetime earnings from royalties, solo recordings and music videos, revenue from concerts and endorsements were about 500 million dollars.

Jackson was also famous for receiving a Presidential Humanitarian Award from Ronald Reagan in 1984, for his support of charities helping people overcome alcohol and drug abuse.

He was also know for losing a fight against fellow 50 year old Madonna on MTV’s Celebrity Deathmatch.

Three of Jackson’s albums-Bad, Dangerous and Thriller-are among the bestsellers of all time. Thriller remains the biggest-selling album since records began.

To date, over 300 million copies of his records have been sold worldwide.

Jackson was also known for wearing his trademark black armband to remind fans of the suffering of children around the world.

His favourite superhero was Morph from the X-Men.

He picked up his iconic moonwalk moves, which he debuted at the Motown 25th Anniversary show in 1983, from streetdancers he had spotted performing outside a hotel.

Little Richard thought that Jackson would be the right choice to play him in a biopic.

Jackson’s most famous pets were Bubbles the chimp and Ben the rat.

He, however, also befriended a ram called Mr Tibbs, a python called Crusher, and Louie the llama.

The fact that a French Jackson aficionado committed suicide in 1984 after his mother refused to allow him to undergo surgery to look like the star shows how popular he was among his fans.

In 1984, a U.S. library accused Jackson of owing it over one million dollars in overdue book fines. Officials said that they would scrap the fines if he returned the books autographed. (ANI)

Sri Lanka Army confirms surrender of two top LTTE leaders

Colombo, Apr.22 (ANI): Two top leaders of the rebel Liberation Tigers of the Tamil Ealam (LTTE) have surrendered before the Sri Lanka Army in Puthumathalam.ccording to a Times Now report, Daya Master and George surrendered before officers of the 58th Division of the Sri Lankan Army.

Daya Master and George were part of the LTTE supreme V. Prabhakaran’s inner circle, and were key spokesmen of the rebel outfit.

Army spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara said that both of these leaders were part of the over 9,000 Tamil civilians who were received at the safe zone on Wednesday morning. He said they revealed their identities and it was not a negotiated surrender. The Sri Lanka army’s intelligence operatives had also identified them, he added.

Brigadier Nanayakkara said that Prabhakaran was confined to a 12-kilometre stretch of land.

The surrender of the two came as a number of civilians continue to be evacuated or transferred to the government controlled “safe zone” in Sri Lanka. So far, close to 80,000 people have been evacuated and accommodated in the safe zone.

Meanwhile, according to reports, Senior Presidential Advisor and Parliamentarian, Basil Rajapaksa would visit India shortly as a special envoy of President Mahinda Rajapaksa for talks with the Indian authorities.

The final assault against Prabhakaran began in Puthumattalam on Tuesday afternoon after the Lankan Army”s deadline for surrender of LTTE Chief Velupillai Prabhakaran ended on Monday.

Puthumattalam is the last LTTE sand bund waiting to be captured by the Sri Lanka Army.

On Tuesday, the LTTE said that its leaders and cadre would not surrender to the Sri Lanka armed forces, and added that their leader V. Prabhakaran was still alive and directing the counter-offensive in Puthumattalam. (ANI)

Brown speaks to Zardari after arrest of 11 Pakistanis in UK

Rezaul H Laskar Islamabad/London Apr 10 (PTI) British Prime Minister Gordon Brown has asked President Asif Ali Zardari to do more to root out terrorism emanating from Pakistan’s territory after police in the UK arrested a dozen al-Qaeda suspects, including 11 Pakistanis, over a “very big terrorist plot”. “Prime Minister Brown telephoned President Zardari and the two leaders discussed matters relating to bilateral relations as well as the fight against terrorism,” Presidential spokesman Farhatullah Babar said in Islamabad, without giving details.

However, Dawn newspaper reported that Brown raised concerns about links between terrorists in the UK and Pakistan and demanded “intensified efforts to crush militants.” The telephonic conversation between Brown and Zardari follow resignation of the UK’s top counter-terrorism expert Bob Quick after a security blunder by the police officer, who inadvertently disclosed a covert surveillance operation against al-Qaeda suspects, forcing premature raids by police who arrested 12 suspects, including 11 Pakistanis.

Earlier, Brown said in the UK that there are “links between terrorists in Britain and terrorists in Pakistan. That is an important issue for us to follow through.

” “One of the lessons we have learnt is that Pakistan has to do more to root out terrorist elements in its country as well,” Brown told Sky News.

Six powers agree draft UN statement on N.Korea

* U.S.-drafted statement N.Korea launch reportedly is tough

* Security Council vote expected next week

(Adds expected timing of vote, French envoy)

By Louis Charbonneau

UNITED NATIONS, April 11 (Reuters) – The five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council and Japan have reached an agreement on a draft statement about North Korea’s long-range rocket launch last weekend, envoys said on Saturday.

No details of the statement were immediately released but diplomats say the U.S.-drafted text is a tough one.

British U.N. Ambassador John Sawers confirmed the agreement, which came after a nearly two-hour meeting on Saturday that ended a weeklong deadlock on a Security Council response to North Korea’s rocket launch last Sunday.

“We now have an understanding amongst the United States, China, Russia, Britain, France and Japan on a draft presidential statement to put to the other members of the council,” Sawers told reporters.

Presidential statements are formal statements of council positions read out by the president of the Security Council. They are generally considered to be weaker than resolutions.

U.S. Ambassador Susan Rice declined to disclose any details of the statement but said, “We think this text sends a clear message.”

The full 15-member Security Council was expected to receive the draft text at a closed-door meeting scheduled for 2:30 p.m. EDT (1830 GMT), U.N. diplomats said. They were not expected to vote on the statement until early next week, to allow a few days to consider the draft, diplomats said.

The agreement, they said, came after Japan said it would back a U.S.-drafted statement to be issued by the council.

The United States, Japan and South Korea say North Korea launched a long-range ballistic missile, not a satellite, in violation of Security Council resolution 1718 banning the firing of such missiles.

Although the statement does not declare North Korea in “violation” of 1718, diplomats said it suggests the launch was not in conformity with it, a compromise that was acceptable to Beijing.

“It is a text which sends out, as we intended, a clear message to North Korea expressing our disagreement with what happened,” French Ambassador Jean-Maurice Ripert said.

Japan had been pushing for a council resolution that would declare Pyongyang in violation of resolution 1718 but Russia and China, which are permanent veto-wielding council members, opposed this. They were not convinced the rocket launch, which North Korea says put a satellite into orbit, was a violation. (Editing by Bill Trott

UN council draft “condemns” N.Korea launch

Draft says rocket launch contravened resolution 1718

* Diplomats say approval of statement is virtually assured (Recasts with draft, adds diplomats)

By Louis Charbonneau

UNITED NATIONS, April 11 (Reuters) – A draft U.N. Security Council statement “condemns” North Korea’s long-range rocket launch and says it contravened a previous council resolution banning ballistic missile and nuclear tests by Pyongyang.

The draft statement, which the five permanent members of the Security Council and Japan agreed and circulated to the other nine council members on Saturday, also called on the U.N. sanctions committee to take steps to enforce existing sanctions against North Korea. [ID:nN11344843]

“The Security Council condemns the 5 April 2009 launch by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), which is in contravention of Security Council resolution 1718,” the U.S.-drafted statement said.

Resolution 1718, passed shortly after Pyongyang’s October 2006 nuclear test, forbids North Korea from launching ballistic missiles or carrying out further nuclear tests.

“The Security Council demands that the DPRK not conduct any further launch,” it said.

The full 15-member Security Council met behind closed doors to discuss the text at around 2:30 p.m. EDT (1830 GMT). They were expected to vote on the statement on Monday afternoon, Mexican Ambassador Claude Heller, the council’s current president, told reporters after the council meeting.

With agreement on the statement reached by the United States, China, Japan, Britain, France and Russia, its adoption on Monday by the full council was virtually assured, council diplomats said.

“We think this text sends a clear message,” U.S. Ambassador Susan Rice told reporters.

The U.N. Sanctions Committee on North Korea has not met for two years and has not designated any North Korean companies to be added to the U.N. blacklist, diplomats say. As a result, the sanctions have not been enforced, they say.

The statement calls for the committee to “undertake its tasks to this effect” and designate “entities and goods” to face sanctions. It adds that if the committee failed to do so by the end of the month, the council will make its own list.

The deal on the final text of a so-called presidential statement was clinched at a two-hour meeting on Saturday that ended a weeklong deadlock on a Security Council response to North Korea’s rocket launch last Sunday.

Presidential statements are formal statements of council positions read out by the president of the Security Council. They are generally considered to be weaker than resolutions.

The agreement, diplomats said, came after Japan agreed to back the U.S.-drafted text.

The United States, Japan and South Korea say North Korea launched a long-range ballistic missile, not a satellite, in violation of Security Council resolution 1718 banning the firing of such missiles.

Although the statement does not explicitly declare Pyongyang in “violation” of 1718, diplomats said the finding that it contravened the resolution, a compromise that was acceptable to Beijing, has the same legal meaning.

(Editing by Bill Trott and Philip Barbara)

LTTE in touch with UN, claims Lanka

Sri Lanka on Friday said there were reports that the leaders of proscribed LTTE, believed to be hiding in the ‘No Fire Zone’ in the country’s embattled north, are in touch with the United Nations.

“There are news reports that Erik Solheim, the Norwegian International Development Minister, had told a group of Tamil demonstrators that LTTE leaders now in the No Fire Zone in Mullaittivu were maintaining close contact with the United Nations,” the Presidential Secretariat said in a release on Friday.

Solheim had reportedly told the Tamil demonstrators at the Norwegian Parliament that the LTTE leaders were in touch with the UN.

Sri Lanka’s comments come close on the heels of the island nation summoning Norwegian envoy for expressing its displeasure over Norway’s alleged role in mediating a phone call between a LTTE leader and an UN official.

Meanwhile, the pro-LTTE website TamilNet.com said Solheim spoke with B Nadesan, head of the political wing of the LTTE, for 30 minutes on April 1.

It quoted S Puleedevan, director of LTTE’s Peace Secretariat, as saying that Solheim apprised him of the recent developments in the international arena regarding the Tamil conflict, especially with regard to the latest briefings at the UN Security Council

Diplomatic row between UK, Pak over latter’s terror links

A diplomatic row has erupted after Pakistan and the UK asked each other to “do more” to counter terrorism, as British anti-terror police interrogated 11 Pakistanis in a major terror plot.

Pakistan flayed Britains immigration system after it emerged that the majority of those arrested in connection with an alleged terror plot entered the country on student visas.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown said there are “links between terrorists in Britain and terrorists in Pakistan. That is an important issue for us to follow through….”

“One of the lessons we have learnt is that Pakistan has to do more to root out terrorist elements in its country as well,” Brown said.

In talks with the Pakistani leadership, Prime Minister Brown raised concerns about links between terrorists in the UK and Pakistan and demanded “intensified efforts to crush militants.”

He asked President Asif Ali Zardari to do more to root out terrorism emanating from Pakistan’s territory after police in the UK arrested a dozen al-Qaeda suspects, including 11 Pakistanis, over a “very big terrorist plot”.

“Prime Minister Brown telephoned President Zardari and the two leaders discussed matters relating to bilateral relations as well as the fight against terrorism,” Presidential spokesman Farhatullah Babar said in Islamabad, without giving details.

However, Wajid Shamsul Hasan, Pakistan’s High Commissioner to the UK, hit back – saying Britain was not doing enough to prevent bogus applications for foreign student status.
