Obama: JP Morgan Loss Shows ‘Exactly Why Wall Street Reform’s So Important’

JP Morgan Chase’s $2 billion trading loss is “exactly why Wall Street reform” is so important, President Obama said in his first interview since the bank announced the massive loss last week. Obama signed the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform Act

, which could ban risky trades like the one that hit JP Morgan, in 2010.

JP Morgan CEO Jamie Dimon announced the loss last Thursday, sparking stock losses and reminders of the 2008 financial crisis across Wall Street. In Obama’s interview, which will air this morning on ABC’s “The View,” the president referenced the federal bailout that resulted from that crisis and said a similar loss at a weaker bank may have caused yet another bailout, ABC News reports:

“JPMorgan is one of the best-managed banks there is. Jamie Dimon, the head of it, is one of the smartest bankers we got and they still lost $2 billion and counting,” the president said. “We don’t know all the details. It’s going to be investigated, but this is why we passed Wall Street reform.”

“This is the best, or one of the best-managed banks. You could have a bank that isn’t as strong, isn’t as profitable making those same bets and we might have had to step in,” Obama said. “That’s exactly why Wall Street reform’s so important.”

What Obama didn’t mention was how successful Dimon and JP Morgan were in watering down Wall Street reform. The bank has spent nearly $10 million since the beginning of 2011 on lobbying, focusing largely on the Volcker Rule, a regulation that would largely prohibit risky proprietary trading at federally-insured banks. The trade that caused JP Morgan’s losses would likely still have been legal under the Volcker Rule, but only because of a loophole that JP Morgan lobbied for.

Obama is right that JP Morgan’s situation demonstrates the need for Wall Street reform. But it also makes clear that the new rules need to be strong and immune from Wall Street’s lobbying influence if we don’t want a repeat of the 2008 crisis.

Lula, ex-Brazilian president, has throat cancer

SAO PAULO: Former Brazilian president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva was diagnosed with throat cancer, a hospital where the ex-leader went for medical exams said on Saturday. Following a series of tests, the 66-year-old Lula “was diagnosed with a tumor located in his larynx” and will receive outpatient chemotherapy treatment, the Syrian-Lebanese Hospital of Sao Paulo said in a statement. He was otherwise in good health, the statement read.

The charismatic and popular Lula left power with a record 80 per cent approval rating after two consecutive terms from January 2003 to December 2010. Brazil’s constitution prohibits a third consecutive term. The former copper factory worker’s social programs helped lift 29 million Brazilians out of poverty, and his foreign policy turned Brazil into a global power player.

The Syrian-Lebanese Hospital, which specializes in cancer treatment, treated Lula’s former vice-president, Jose Alencar, who died in March following cancer in his abdominal area. President Dilma Rousseff was diagnosed with lymphatic cancer in 2009, before she was elected to Brazil’s top office, and was treated in September of that year at the hospital. Doctors say she is currently cancer-free.

Syria in the dock at top UN rights body

GENEVA: Syria was in the dock at an urgent session of the United Nations Human Rights Council which began on Monday and which the US envoy said underscored the increasing international isolation of president Bashar al-Assad .

The United States, the European Union and Arab nations want to set up an international inquiry into atrocities by Syrian government forces.

World cheers as Libya prepares for power shift

PARIS: World leaders on Monday hailed the rebel takeover of Tripoli, urging Muammer Gaddafi to admit defeat, as Libyans around the world celebrated the veteran leader’s imminent departure.

“Tonight, the momentum against the Gaddafi regime has reached a tipping point. Tripoli is slipping from the grasp of a tyrant,” US president Barack Obama said in a statement issued from his holiday in Martha’s Vineyard. “He needs to relinquish power once and for all,” Obama said.

French president Nicolas Sarkozy, whose country spearheaded support for the uprising and was the first to recognize their interim administration , condemned Gaddafi’s “irresponsible and desperate calls for the combat to continue” .

ItalianPMSilvioBerlusconi , who signed a 2008 friendship treaty that made the former colonial power Libya’s top trading partner, urged Gaddafi to “put an end to every pointless resistance and to save, in this way, his people from further suffering.”

British PM David Cameron also said that “Gaddafi must stop fighting, without conditions, and clearly show that he has given up any claim to control Libya” .

Nato, whose aerial bombing played a key role in weakening Gaddafi’s military infrastructure , urged him to step aside and give his country a chance to rebuild. It is “time to create a new Libya – a state based on freedom, not fear; democracy, not dictatorship” , Atlantic alliance head Anders Fogh Rasmussen said.

Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez, an old Gaddafi ally, was a lone voice of foreign support for the crumbling regime, accusing the West of “destroying Tripoli with their bombs” .

China was more measured than Western powers in its reaction and promised to cooperate with whatever government would take over.

Russia’s response was equally cautious, urging any future political dialogue in Libya to take place without foreign interference.

Longtime ally Serbia stressed the situation was still developing and voiced hope its close relationship with Libya would continue.

South Africa denied rumours that it might be a place of exile for a defeated Gaddafi or help him to flee and called for the rapid establishment of “a truly representative and people-centred dispensation” in Libya.

Now it’s your turn, Syrians tell Assad

BEIRUT: Thousands of antigovernment protesters took to the streets across Syria on Monday after a TV appearance by president Assad, shouting for him to step down and chanting “Gaddafi is gone, now it’s your turn Bashar!”

Security forces opened fire in Homs, killing at least one person, a witness said. Crowds there and in several other cities were angered by Assad’s remarks on TV and taunted him with warnings that his regime would be the next to unravel, as Muammar Gaddafi’s 42-year rule was crumbling under a rebel advance in Libya. Human rights groups say more than 2,000 people have been killed in the government’s crackdown on a five-month-old uprising. The regime has unleashed tanks and snipers in an attempt to stamp out the revolt.

In a now-familiar refrain, Assad promised reforms – including parliamentary elections by Feb – but insisted unrest was being driven by armed gangs & Islamic militants , not reform seekers.

Hard-line Iran prez bats for co-ed colleges

TEHRAN: Iran’s political power struggles have brought no shortage of cutthroat intrigue with careers ruined, government officials arrested and even accusations of black magic. And now this — firebrand president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as the voice of liberal dissent.

That’s the latest twist in the showdown between Ahmadinejad and Iran’s ruling clerics. Ahmadinejad — reviled by the opposition as a figurehead of hard-line rule — is now temporarily in the reformists’ corner by opposing plans to segregate male and
female students at Iranian universities. “It is necessary to swiftly prevent these backward, shallow-minded actions,” Ahmadinejad wrote in an order addressed to members of his Cabinet.

It also nudged the political dramas further into territory that’s surprising even by Iran’s roughneck standards, where potshots and bitter quarrels are common fare in parliament and elsewhere. This time, the battle is Ahmadinejad versus the theocracy that once backed him.

Ailing Nigerian president meets with clerics-media

ABUJA, April 2 (Reuters) – Ailing Nigerian President Umaru Yar’Adua, who has not been seen in public since last November, met with top Islamic clerics at his residence in the capital Abuja, media outlets reported on Friday.

Ustaz Musa Mohammed, the chief imam of the Abuja National Mosque, told the BBC and Nigeria’s ThisDay and Daily Trust newspapers, that he shook Yar’Adua’s hand and prayed with him on Thursday. He said the ailing leader had difficulty speaking. (Reporting by Randy Fabi; Editing by Jon Boyle)

ANA upbeat on recovery in travel demand

(Reuters) – All Nippon Airways Co, headed for a $693 million loss in the just-ended financial year, said its profitability has started to bounce back thanks to a recovery in travel demand, particularly in the high-margin business class segment.

Hot Stocks

The airline, Japan’s second-biggest by revenue, is also considering starting a low-cost carrier, its president said, eyeing growing demand among budget travelers.

ANA, like other global airlines, was smacked down last year by a sputtering economy and outbreak of H1N1 swine flu that led to the industry’s sharpest decline in passenger traffic in decades and sent Japan Airlines (JAL) into bankruptcy.

But thanks to a recovery in passenger demand in the past few months, ANA is seeing more than 40 percent growth in business passenger bookings for May compared with a year earlier and higher sales.

“Passenger bookings are showing double-digit growth for international operations for April and also May,” ANA president Shinichiro Ito told Reuters in an interview on Friday.

“A stabilized economy is seen creating more business travel demand. Some (passenger) inflow from JAL is also seen,” he said.

ANA, the third-biggest airline by market capital in Asia after Air China Ltd and Singapore Airlines, surprised investors last month when it forecast a bigger net loss for the year ended March 31 after the weak global economy and swine flu hit its revenues.

To return to profit in the year that started April 1, ANA is stepping up cost-cutting measures including slashing 1,000 jobs.

“The year 2010 is strategically important for us. We aim to return to profit, Boeing Co’s 787 delivery is scheduled and the expansion for Haneda airport is planned,” said Ito.

The industry association IATA said last month that airlines are recovering strongly from the crisis, as passengers, freight and pricing power return, though the industry is still deeply in the red.

LOW-COST CARRIER

ANA, a launch customer of Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner, has been eyeing a global expansion to strengthen its ties with Star Alliance partner carriers such as United Airlines and Lufthansa.

It aims to boost its international travel revenues by 68 percent to 357 billion yen in the year ending March 2012 from the year just ended.

ANA is also “seriously considering” the possibility of starting a low-cost carrier (LCC), said Ito, who says he is too busy managing the airline to go fishing — his favorite hobby.

“But we would first need to see whether the LCC model would really work in Japan. To operate an LCC, we’ll also need find airports that are open 24-hours-a-day with low landing fees,” he said.

LCCs have been on the increase throughout the world, but Japan has always been a difficult market due to high labor costs, limited slot availability at key airports and expensive landing fees.

Shares of ANA have gained 6.7 percent since the start of the year, in line with the rise in the benchmark Nikkei average.

Hu’s U.S. visit key for yuan move: adviser

(Reuters) – A successful visit by Chinese President Hu Jintao to Washington this month could open the door for an adjustment in China’s yuan policy, but another one-off revaluation should be avoided, a central bank adviser said on Friday.

China

“The adjustment should be carried out at a time that is appropriate. We need to find the right time, but a one-off adjustment won’t benefit either China or United States,” said Li Daokui, a member of the central bank’s monetary policy committee, told Reuters in an interview.

“It will hinge on President Hu’s visit to the United States. If the talks are successful, we could made an adjustment based on China’s own conditions,” he said, without elaborating.

Hu will attend a nuclear security summit in Washington on April 12-13, despite initial uncertainties about whether he would go.

The nuclear summit will open days before the U.S. Treasury is due to release a report on whether China is distorting its currency exchange rate to boost its exports.

Domestic U.S. political pressure has been building on Treasury to label China a “currency manipulator” in its April 15 report on global currency policies, but analysts believe Hu’s decision to proceed with the trip is an indication that it will not do so.

China has been facing stiff pressure from the United States and other Western powers which say Beijing is keeping its currency artificially low to give Chinese exporters an advantage in world trade.

Beijing allowed the yuan to rise 21 percent against the U.S. dollar between July 2005 and July 2008 before effectively repegging the currency, also known as the renminbi, near 6.83 to the dollar to help the economy through the global financial crisis.

The yuan issue has been politicized by some foreign countries, but Hu’s planned visit signaled easing tensions which could remove a barrier for China carrying out currency reforms, Li said.

Asked about when the People’s Bank of China (PBOC) will consider raising interest rates, Li said it would hinge on upcoming economic data, particularly March figures due to be released soon.

The PBOC has already taken some smaller steps this year to prevent the surging economy from overheating, such as raising banks’ reserve requirements, and strong data recently has provided fresh arguments for more tightening sooner rather than later.

“The situation is very complicated this year,” said Li, an influential economist at Beijing’s elite Tsinghua University who was recently appointed one of three academic advisers to the central bank.

Worries about Chinese policy tightening have spooked financial markets in recent months as China has largely led the global economic recovery.

INFLATION CONCERNS

China will be able to sustain strong economic growth in the next few years and the government’s focus is controlling inflation expectations and asset price bubbles, Li said.

Public expectations on consumer prices would be crucial for the government to maintain a lid on inflation, he said.

Some analysts say inflation is set to accelerate this year given the ample liquidity in the banking system and huge bank loans.

Although the consumer price index rose only 2.7 percent in the year to February, surging property prices are a harbinger of broader inflation in an economy that is likely to record year-on-year GDP for the first quarter well into double digits.

“High liquidity alone won’t be enough to push up inflation, but liquidity in conjunction with rising asset prices and inflation expectations will lead to higher inflation,” said Li, a Harvard-trained economist.

Obama to host tripartite meeting with Israeli PM and Palestinian President

Jerusalem, Sep 20 (ANI): In an effort to renew the peace process in the Middle East, President Barack Obama will host a tripartite meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas on Tuesday.
White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said the meeting would take place after Obama meets separately with each of the two leaders.

“These meetings will continue the efforts of President Obama, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and Special Envoy George Mitchell to lay the groundwork for the relaunch of negotiations, and to create a positive context for those negotiations so that they can succeed,” the Jerusalem Post quoted a White House statement, as saying.

The meetings will take place in New York on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly conference.

The White House announcement of the meeting comes as something of a surprise, since both Israel and the PA until Saturday continued to blame each other for the current stall in peace talks

And recently, Mitchell had failed to make progress in talks with the two leaders.

On Saturday, Mitchell said: “It is another sign of the president’s deep commitment to comprehensive peace that he wants to personally engage at this juncture.” (ANI)

Shia Muslims to celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr on Monday

Lucknow, Sept 20 (ANI): A senior official of Shia Muslim community has said that Eid-ul-Fitr would be celebrated on Monday.

Kalbe Sadiq, Shia cleric and senior vice president of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board, said here that the Ramadan moon would be sighted on Sunday.

“I can say without any doubt that in Bangladesh, Pakistan, and in India, the moon will be sighted on Sunday. Sunni, Shia and all other sects of Islam will celebrate the festival of Eid-ul-Fitr on Monday,” Sadiq said.

However, Sunni Muslims disagreed, saying they would wait for the sighting of moon before declaring Eid.

“If the moon is sighted on September 20, or if the sighting in reported form anywhere, then Eid will be celebrated on the 21st. And if it is not sighted on the 20th and there are no reports either, in that case it will be celebrated on the 22nd,” said Maulana Khalid Rasheed, head of Lucknow’s Firangi Mahal.

During the holy month of Ramadan, Muslims observe a daylong fast and open it in the evening.

At the end of Ramadan, Muslims throughout the world observe a joyous three-day celebration called Eid-ul-Fitr.

Eid-ul-Fitr falls on the first day of Shawwal, the month, which follows Ramadan in the Islamic calendar. It is a time to give in charity to those in need, and celebrate with family and friends the completion of a month of blessings and joy. (ANI)

405th installation anniversary of Sri Guru Granth Sahib

Agra, Sep 19(ANI): People of all religions and communities gathered to celebrate the 405th anniversary of the installation of the Sikh holy scriptures, Sri Guru Granth Sahib, at Gurudwara Maithan in Agra.

This was a significant landmark for the Sikhs, as the 275-year-old handwritten scripture, whose front pages are written with gold, was put on display for the devotees.

“The Guru Granth Sahib has the preaching or ‘bani’ of famous poets like Kabir ji, Guru Ravidas ji and Baba Farid ji. It is symbol of humanity and so people of all the religions have gathered here to celebrate the ‘Prakash Parv’, the installation ceremony together,” said Kanwldeep Singh, President of Sri Gursikh Sabha.

Also on display was a miniature scripture of Guru Granth Sahib, which has been preserved at the Gurudwara Maithan for the past 15 years.

“We have Guru Granth sahib of 1 X 1 inches long. The British for the convenience of Sikh soldiers especially designed the holy book during the First World War, as they could not carry a normal sized book in the battlefield. The miniature Guru Granth Sahib was printed in Germany. It was kept in a silver box,” said Gyani Kashmir Singh, head Granthi of Gurudwara Maithan.

To mark the anniversary of the installation of Guru Granth Sahib, special prayers were also held in the Gurudwara premises, which once the house of Mai jassi that was visited by Guru Sri Tegh Bahadur.he gurudwara is currently undergoing renovation and will be expanded to facilitate the large number of devotees visiting the shrine.

A total of 20 million dollars will be spent on renovation and construction of new Gurudwara, a 100-bed hospital and a community hall.

Gurudwara Maithan also upheld the tradition of Langar, which has been followed over the centuries. Guru Arjan Dev and Mata Ganga set the precedent of preparing and serving food to the hungry, in the langar hall, where all social, economic and religious barriers collapse and all – the laborer, the lord, the peasant and the prince, are treated alike and served the same food in the same manner.

This is a practice of great social significance, and it is the key to the understanding of Sikhism. By Brijesh Sharma (ANI)

Stop blaming Pakistan for ‘home grown’ terror plots, Qureshi tells UK

London, Sep.19 (ANI): Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi has asked Britain to stop blaming Islamabad for the ‘home grown’ terror plots against the UK.

Referring to Britain’s lashing out at Pakistan on the liquid bomb plot issue, Qureshi said it was unfair to criticize Pakistan for every terror plot hatched in Britain.

“It is easy to pass the buck, but they (liquid bomb plotters) were British citizens. They went to school here, they are part of the British system, and they live here. If they do something extraordinary is it fair that Pakistan should be blamed?” The Independent quoted Qureshi, as saying.

Pakistan has been critical of Britain’s accusations and has objected to allegations regarding it not doing enough to counter the expanding reach of the extremists based in the country’s tribal region.

A top Pakistani diplomat recently reacted strongly to Britain’s accusations regarding Pakistan harbouring extremists plotting to attack the UK.

The diplomat charged Britain of not doing enough to tackle home grown terrorists and treating Pakistan as a “whipping boy”.

“Sometimes for our British friends the truth is bitter. We have somehow turned out to be a ‘whipping boy’, there is a long history to that. The British need to search their own house,” the diplomat had said.

It may be recalled that Prime Minister Gordon Brown, during his Islamabad visit earlier this year, had said: “Three-quarters of the most serious plots investigated by the British authorities have links to Al-Qaida in Pakistan.”

Brown’s statement had angered Pakistani leadership and strained relationship between two countries, but things normalized later with President Asif Ali Zardari visit to the UK. (ANI)

Musharraf ‘shedding crocodile tears’, says ex- Pak SCBA chief

Islamabad, Sep.19 (ANI): Pakistan Supreme Court Bar Association’s former President Aitzaz Ahsan has said that former President General Pervez Musharraf is ‘shedding crocodile tears’ while admitting that removing Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry from office in 2007 was a mistake.

Referring to Musharraf’s speech at Trinity University in Saint Antonio, Texas, where the former general admitted that he had committed a mistake while sacking the then Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) from office, Ahsan said Musharraf had committed not only one but two mistakes by removing the higher judiciary and imposing an emergency in the country on November 3, 2007.

Talking to a private television channel, Ahsan said the government and the ‘independent’ judiciary should play their role in trying Musharraf under high treason charges.

He said it was not the right time for lawyers to take their struggle to roads, as they did previously while demanding restoration of the judiciary, The News reports.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) has denied that Musharraf had taken the cabinet into his confidence before promulgating the Provisional Constitutional Ordinance (PCO) and imposing the emergency rule in 2007.

Interacting with media persons during an Iftaar party hosted by PML-Q President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, several party leaders rejected the notion regarding Musharraf consulting the cabinet before taking the illegal and extra-judicial actions. (ANI)

Obama identified with Hitler, Stalin

Washington, Sep.19 (ANI): Even as thousands of people packed the streets of Washington on Friday to protest against government spending, some of the agitators likened President Barack Obama to Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler.

According to a CBS report, most of those would have called themselves “patriots” arguing that their government was betraying traditional principles.

Steve Butler, a physician from Indiana was handing out copies of the Constitution. “If you read the quotes of Thomas Jefferson, these guys were conservatives and they said that the control should be with the people and not with the big government.”

There were plenty of signs identifying Obama with Hitler, or Stalin, that questions his citizenship, that seems to celebrate the death of a famous liberal.

But perhaps what most united these protesters was a broader discontent: a sense that they are not being heard, that their interests, and the national interests, are in the hands of a few. (ANI)

Manmohan Singh hosts Iftar party

New Delhi, Sep 19 (ANI): Prime Minister Manmohan Singh hosted an Iftar party here on Friday.

Vice President Hamid Ansari, Congress party president Sonia Gandhi, several foreign dignitaries and many political leaders were among those who attended the party.

Pakistan’s High Commissioner to India, Shahid Malik, and several prominent Muslim religious leaders were also among the invitees.

During the holy month of Ramadan Muslims observe a daylong fast without water and open it in the evening.

Terrorism a by-product of Pak’s past mistakes: Zardari

London, Sep. 19 (ANI): President Asif Ali Zardari has revealed that extremism was a by-product of Pakistan’s past mistakes and was deliberately created during the 1980s.

He said the employment of a liberal policy encouraged religious fanaticism and achieved of certain strategic objectives of terror perpetrators.

“What we are witnessing today is the outcome of that policy of the 80′s and even earlier. The policy of using religious extremism as an instrument of war. We in Pakistan have paid a very heavy price for this policy,” The News quoted Zardari, as saying.

Addressing a gathering at London’s International Institute of Strategic Studies (IISS), Zardari pointed out that militants and militancy were not created in a vacuum; they have been the product of a deliberate policy to fight the rival ideology.

The free world adopted a novel strategy that was based on the exploitation of religion to motivate Muslims around the world to wage jehad, he added.

Furthermore, Zardari pointed out that the strategy may have worked well but some serious mistakes were also made as the world abandoned Afghanistan in a hurry and no thought was given to its stability after the withdrawal of foreign forces.

“After the retreat of foreign forces, Afghanistan was abandoned and left at the mercy of the warlords and the jehadis…Pakistan has suffered more than others. For decades we had to host and continue to host millions of Afghan refugees,” he said. (ANI)

Gilani rejects inking safe passage deal for Musharraf

Islamabad, Sep.19 (ANI): Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has denied inking any ‘safe exit’ deal to facilitate former President General Pervez Musharraf’s safe passage from the country after he stepped down from the Presidency.

In an interview to a private television channel, Gilani said: “If there had been such a deal, it would have surfaced by now, as the media is very vibrant today.”

Gilani also said would be wrong to say that Musharraf has been ‘pardoned’, as neither he has been convicted by the court of law nor been ‘indemnified by parliament’.

When asked whether there is any possibility of invoking the Article Six of the Constitution against Musharraf, Gilani reiterated that he was willing to do it if parliament passed a unanimous resolution.

“I am for it. We must create history. But at the same time, we should not rock the boat. If there is a unanimous resolution, the whole nation would be together,” The Daily Times quoted Gilani, as saying.

Commenting on the Baloch issue, he said the government is preparing a package for the insurgency hit province which would include constitutional, administrative and economic reforms. (ANI)

Holiday Inn hotel made of key cards is world’s first

Melbourne, Sep 18 (ANI): A Holiday Inn hotel made entirely of key cards has been unveiled in New York.

The 37-square-metre hotel, built by world record-holding Cardstacker Bryan Berg, is made from more than 200,000 key cards and weighs 1814 kilograms.

It includes a guest bedroom, bathroom and lobby, with life-sized furniture.

The design was created by Holiday Inn, the world’s largest hotel group, to mark the relaunch of 1200 of its hotels around the world.

“The Key Card Hotel is a fun and interactive way to showcase the changes happening at our hotels and is the only structure of its kind to ever be created by a hotel brand,” News.com.au quoted Kevin Kowalski, Senior Vice President, Global Brand Management, Holiday Inn, as saying.

Berg, who will also build a freestanding three-metre replica of New York’s Empire State Building in the lobby of the Key Card Hotel using Holiday Inn playing cards, said constructing the hotel has been a great challenge.

“This is my largest cardstacking challenge to date and the only card creation I have ever made at full human scale,” Berg added about the hotel.

The first 250 guests who attended the Key Card Hotel grand opening received a free night stay at any Holiday Inn.

The company’s 1 billion dollar relaunch is one of the largest in the history of the hospitality industry. (ANI)
