Red Bull unveil RB5 car for 2009 F1 season

Red Bull unveil RB5 car for 2009 F1 seasonJerez, Spain – Red Bull officially unveiled its car for the 2009 Formula One season Monday at the Spanish Jerez circuit.

The new RB5 car, which was presented by Red Bull drivers Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel, is powered by a Renault engine designed by Adrian Newey and encompasses the far-reaching regulation changes that have been brought in to cut costs for the 2009 season.

“The team is well prepared to profit from the rule changes,” said team principal Christian Horner, who is hoping Vettel can repeat his feat of last year at the Italian Grand Prix while still at Toro Rosso by securing Red Bull’s maiden F1 win.

“With these new rules there is absolutely no reason why we shouldn’t be able to achieve it,” said Horner.

Red Bull will also looking to improve on their seventh-place finish in last season’ constructors’ championship.

Vettel is due to give the car its maiden run on Monday, while Webber will get his first lap practice on Wednesday since breaking his leg in a cycling accident late last year. (dpa)

ECB tipped to set the stage for March rate cut

Frankfurt – The European Central Bank (ECB) is expected to set the stage Thursday for a rate cut at its meeting in March.

ECB chief Jean-Claude Trichet has already indicated that the Frankfurt-based bank is likely to hold off on trimming borrowing costs again this week before pressing on with its rate-cutting cycle in March.

“The next important meeting is in March,” said Trichet at his press conference last month after the bank delivered another 50 basis points cut. This brought the cost of money in the 16-member eurozone down to 2 per cent.

For the moment, the ECB appears keen to sit back and assess the economic impact of the 225 basis points in rate reductions it has delivered since October last year.

However, economists are divided about the size of the rate cut the ECB’s 22-head governing council is expected to deliver in March.

While some analysts believe the normally cautious ECB will limit the March rate cut to 25 basis points, others are predicting it will deliver another more hefty 50 basis points reduction.

Analysts are also divided about how far the ECB will be prepared to go in trimming rates.

Some believe that the ECB’s benchmark refinancing rate could be at 1 per cent or even 0.5 per cent by around the middle of the year.

But others are predicting that the bank will bring the current rate-cutting cycle to an end at 1.50 per cent. (dpa)

Police disperse protest at Icelandic parliament building

Reykjavik – Icelandic police Tuesday used tear gas to disperse protesters outside parliament during its first session for the year, broadcaster RUV reported.

Iceland has experienced a wave of protests since October when the country’s three banks were nationalized when they faced collapse in the wake of the global credit crunch.

The North Atlantic nation of some 320,000 people is facing a severe contraction of its economy with unemployment due to rise sharply.

A paper prepared by the finance ministry said unemployment had reached 1.7 per cent in the fourth quarter 2008, and was predicted to increase this year to 7.8 per cent.

Fresh figures from the Directorate of Labour suggest that unemployment among the youth – 16 to 24-year-olds – was rising more rapidly than among older workers.

Interest rates are at 18 per cent and the country recently secured a 2.1-billion-dollar bridging loan from the International Monetary Fund. (dpa)

February Open date off the menu for realist Federer

Melbourne – Realistic Roger Federer is well aware that a jam-packed annual tennis calendar will almost certainly not allow the Australian Open to move from its traditional January date.

Despite voicing the opinion this week that the Open would be more pleasing to players were it slid a few weeks into February – more time for preparation – the Swiss knows that a such a move is just a dream.

“A lot has been said – the Australian Open has to be moved two weeks later – but that’s not what was meant in any way,” he explained on Sunday.

“We were asked if we should change the Australian Open schedule, we always talk about calendar changes. It was taken out of context,” he said.

“What we said was in a perfect world it would be nicer to have a longer Australian swing, move around a little bit. But we don’t live in a perfect world.”

Federer, as president of the ATP player council, is well aware of the inner workings of the game. The calendars of the ATP and WTA remain a delicate balancing act between the sanctioning bodies, the Grand Slams and the International Tennis Federation.

And timing of most events have been set in stone for years – if not decades.

Lleyton Hewitt came to the defence of the current date, pointing out that January is Aussie high summer, with kids out of school and plenty of free time in television programming line-ups.

“For an Australian, it (January) fits in so well with the school holidays and getting kids out there. For tennis in this country, that really helps.

“The young kids can come out and watch a lot of it, even on the back courts, get a good atmosphere out here.

“Sportswise there’s not a lot on at this time of the year either, so it stands out, which is probably a good thing for our Grand Slam. It’s a tough call obviously early in the year.

“A lot of overseas players have prepared well enough to win it in the past.

“But obviously there’s a lot more to it than just worrying about the players for a couple weeks. The tournament has to worry about ticket sales, kids being around the place
(ballkids), a whole lot of other things.”

Officials at the Open have put their foot down, saying the January date is fixed.

They are also reported to be ready to announces next weekend an investment by the Victorian state government for a multi-million-dollar upgrade of 20-year-old Melbourne Park to ward off any attempts by Asian countries or even hot rival Sydney to try and steal the event from its longtime home.

“It’s really become a very, very prestigious Grand Slam to play and one of our favorites,” said Federer. “It’s basically the players’ slam.” dpa

Obama might establish channel of communication with Hamas

London, Jan 9 (ANI): Sources close to US President-elect Barrack Obama’s transition team have said that he is likely to establish a channel for communicating with the Islamist organization Hamas in Palestine.

According to a report in the Guardian, the incoming Obama administration is prepared to abandon George Bush’s doctrine of isolating Hamas, by opening contacts with the organization.

The move to open contacts with Hamas, which could be initiated through the US intelligence services, would represent a definitive break with the Bush presidency’s ostracizing of the group.

The state department has designated Hamas a terrorist organisation, and in 2006, Congress passed a law banning US financial aid to the group.

There is no talk of Obama approving direct diplomatic negotiations with Hamas early on, but he is being urged by advisers to initiate low-level or clandestine approaches, and there is growing recognition in Washington that the policy of ostracizing Hamas is counter-productive.

A potential contender for a foreign policy role in the Obama administration suggested that the president-elect would not be bound by the Bush doctrine of isolating Hamas.

“This is going to be an administration that is committed to negotiating with critical parties on critical issues,” the source said.

A tested course would be to start contacts through Hamas and the US intelligence services, similar to the secret process through which the US engaged with the PLO in the 1970s.

Meanwhile, a UN resolution was agreed last night at the UN, calling for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire between Hamas and Israeli forces in Gaza.

The resolution was passed, though the US, represented by secretary of state Condoleezza Rice, abstained.

The two weeks since Israel began its military campaign against Gaza have heightened anticipation about how Obama intends to deal with the Middle East.

He adopted a strongly pro-Israel position during the election campaign, as did his erstwhile opponent and choice for secretary of state, Hillary Clinton.

But, it is widely thought Obama would adopt a more even-handed approach once he is president. (ANI)

Bush tells military that its cause is ”just and right”

Washington, Jan.7 (ANI): President Bush on Tuesday said that when it comes to the military, his time in office will be remembered as a fight to protect the freedom of Americans and others” freedom.

Speaking after reviewing a military parade held in his honor at Fort Myer in Arlington, Bush said: “The decisions I made as your commander in chief have not always been popular, but the cause you have served has always been just and right.”

“The missions you have carried out have always been necessary,” The Washington Times quoted Bush, as saying further.

Joint Chiefs of Staff Adm. Mike Mullen said he”d been carrying a journal with him as he visited troops during the holidays for them to write messages to Mr. Bush, and the admiral read some of them to the president.

One was a bit of advice from an admiring Air Force master sergeant who said Bush had demonstrated agility in ducking the shoes thrown at him during his last trip to Iraq.

“Next time pick up the shoe and throw it back. We got your back,” the sergeant wrote.

The journal is intended to be a parting gift to the president and first lady from military families.

Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates, who President-elect Barack Obama has asked to stay on into his administration, portrayed Bush as prescient even before he won election in 2000 for being able to see the ways the military would have to change to face modern enemies — what he called “the unconventional and invisible threats.”

Gates said Bush has left the military better prepared by changing the military base strategy that existed during the Cold War, fusing intelligence and military action together better than ever before, and increasing technology such as boosting to 6,000 the number of unmanned aerial vehicles. (ANI)

Robert Pattinson’s back-up career plan – singing

Washington, January 6 (ANI): Actor Robert Pattinson, best known for playing Edward Cullen in the film adaptation of ‘Twilight’, has revealed should his acting career fail, he is prepared to turn to plan B – music.

The 22-year-old, who honed his acting skills at a theatre school in London, said he was prepared for the worst and would be keen to turn towards singing.

“Music is my back-up plan if acting fails. I don”t want to put all my eggs in one basket,” Contactmusic quoted him as telling the Los Angeles Times.

The Hottest Male Movie Vampire further added that he had no intention of ‘cashing in’ the opportunity to launch himself as a musician with the inclusion of two of his compositions in the hit vampire movie.

He said: “That”s what I was scared about, it looks like I”m trying to get a music career out of it or something. I”m not going to be doing any music videos or anything.” (ANI)

22 escape from Madagascar prison, 17 still at large

22 escape from Madagascar prison, 17 still at largeAntananarivo – Twenty two inmates managed Sunday to break out of a prison outside the capital Antananarivo in a breakout prepared over the Christmas period, local media reported Monday.

The inmates crept out through a seven-meter-long escape tunnel, dug with plastic bottles and a saucepan, before lowering themselves over the prison wall with a rope made of clothing.

One prisoner was shot to death by the guards, while four others were seized several kilometres away from the Tsiafahy prison situated outside Antananarivo.

There is no trace of the 17 remaining escapees. Several of them had been sentenced to death for their crimes, however the death penalty is no longer carried out on Madagascar.

The timing of the jailbreak coincides with the appointment of a new interior minister, whose responsibilities include the penal system. (dpa)

Kylie Minogue seen snowboarding with new toyboy lover

London, Jan 5 (ANI): Aussie pop princess Kylie Minogue was spotted having a whale of a time on the French Alps with Spanish model Andres Velencoso Segura.

Minogue, 40, and Segura, who is ten years her junior, were seen snowboarding and partying together for a week in Chamonix, with locals saying that the two looked like loved-up teenagers.

“Andres had never been snowboarding before but Kylie loves it,” the Sun quoted a source as saying.

“It shows how much he is into her that he was prepared to give it a go.

“She paid for an instructor for him and they had a great time. And they looked like a loved-up couple in the bars in the evening.

“Kylie loves winter sports. She likes the fact that people don’t really recognise her with all her gear and goggles on.

“But when the occasional person did notice her, she was lovely — polite and down to earth.

“They both looked so happy. It was great to see,” the source said.

On New Year’s Eve, the pair dined at a Chamonix restaurant before dancing and smooching in local bar No Escape.

“They were happily celebrating with friends and locals but enjoyed a few tender private moments too,” an onlooker added. (ANI)

Arab anger, helplessness over Israel’s Gaza incursion

Cairo  – Israel’s incursion into the Gaza Strip is cutting the Arab world to the quick, leaving millions left to seethe with anger and helplessness while their leaders do little or nothing.

From Marrakesh to Damascus, demonstrators have given vent to their outrage and sympathy in a series of protests and donation campaigns on behalf of the Palestinians reeling under Israel’s offensive.

Many Arabs feel personally humiliated at the way Israeli forces are acting against their militarily hapless fellow Arabs while, apart from protests and humanitarian aid, Arab leaders have done nothing.

The Arabs know that even the few political means at their disposal count for little because those who have the power to use them are not prepared to do so.

Neither Egypt nor Jordan is prepared to break diplomatic relations with Israel. Nor would the rulers in Saudi Arabia and other Arab oil- exporting nations consider turning off the oil tap in order to pressure Europe and the United States.

“It would be appropriate if the Arab regimes were to break off their ties with Israel in view of the continuing aggression against Gaza,” Algerian presidential advisor Abdulaziz Belkhadem said on state radio Sunday. Using oil as a means to bring influence could also prove effective, he said.

But Saudi King Abdullah prefers to make donations of millions of the euros and dollars which oil exports earn, rather than threaten a halt to oil exports.

A marathon television donation programme on behalf of the Gaza Strip Palestinians saw more than 119 million rials (32 million dollars) pour in within a couple of hours.

The Egyptian TV preacher Amre Khaled issued an appeal for blood donations for the Palestinians. Meanwhile Arab singers were cancelling their concerts.

But what remains is merely a feeling of helplessness.

Those Arabs who in September 2005 dismissed the Israeli pullout from the Gaza Strip as merely a tactical move now feel vindicated.

Even Turkey, which many Arabs look askance at because of its economic and military cooperation with the Jewish state, is now distancing itself from Israel.

Turkish Premier Recep Tayyip Erdogan, whose membership in an Islamic party has so far not caused him to change course regarding Israel, declared Saturday evening after talks with Saudi King Abdullah in Riyadh that no one can simply stand by and watch how in the Gaza Strip “innocent children and women are being killed.” dpa

Gordon Brown’s favorite dish is mixture of mashed potato and cabbage!

London, Jan 4 (ANI): Gordon Brown is certainly a health freak, for when asked to nominate his favourite dish, the UK leader plumped for Rumbledethumps – a gloopy mixture of mashed potato and cabbage.

The Prime Minister is among a number of politicians who have named their favourite foods for a fundraising book in aid of the Donaldson”s school for the deaf in Edinburgh.

Brown has claimed in the book that he got a taste for the dish as a boy, recalling how he would come back from watching Raith Rovers matches to find the dish on the table, prepared by his mother, reports the Scotsman.

The book reveals that his ‘economical’ eating habits are shared by his fellow politicians too.

In keeping with the tough times, Scottish Secretary Jim Murphy claims that the meal he yearns for more than any is a bowl of “hearty lentil broth”.

Keeping up the spartan theme, First Minister Alex Salmond claims his favourite dish is Cullen Skink, the soup traditionally made from smoked haddock, potatoes and onions. (ANI)

Mulford meets Chidambaram, India shares important evidence on Pakistan

New Delhi, Jan.3 (ANI): Union Home Minister P.Chidambaram met US Ambassador David C Mulford here today and reportedly discussed the Mumbai terror attack investigations.

The meeting took place after Washington assured India of all help in the attack probe.

The meeting is being considered important as India is said to have compiled sufficient evidence on the role of Pakistan-based terror elements in the November 2008 attack.

Though Pakistan continues to deny the use of its territory in the carnage, India says it is ready to share the evidence gathered with the world.

Investigations have revealed that the terrorists, who attacked the Hotel Taj , Oberoi Trident , Nariman House and Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminal (CST) on November 26 2008, were in constant touch with their handlers in Karachi during the three day seige.

India says it is prepared to share the evidence gathered with the US, UK, China and other countries which have an influence on Islamabad, with the objective of pressurising it to act against terror outfits operating from its soil. (ANI)

China tested Pakistan’s first N-bomb during Benazir’s tenure: ex-US official

Washington, Jan .3(ANI): In a startling revelation made by a former US official, it has emerged that China tested Pakistan’s first nuclear bomb in 1990.

Thomas Reed, a former US Air Force secretary has claimed in his book- The Nuclear Express: A Political History of the Bomb and Its Proliferation that during Benazir Bhutto’s tenure China helped Pakistan in testing its first nuclear armament.

“We believe that during Benazir Bhutto’s term in office, the People’s Republic of China tested Pakistan’s first bomb for her in 1990.There are numerous reasons why we believe this to be true, including the design of the weapon and information gathered from discussions with Chinese nuclear experts,” the Dawn quoted Reed, as saying.

Reed also claimed that it took Pakistan little time to respond to the nuclear test carried out by India in May 1998 because the Chinese had already prepared them for a response.

“It only took them two weeks and three days,” he said.

Reed noted that China gave full-fledged training to the Pakistani scientists regarding the nuclear techniques.

“Chinese did a massive training of Pakistani scientists, brought them to China for lectures, even gave them the design of the CHIC-4 device, which was a weapon that was easy to build a model for export,” he said.

Chinese nuclear support to Pakistan is not new as it was evident in the 2001 US Department of Defence report that China had supplied Pakistan with nuclear materials and expertise and had also provided critical assistance in the construction of Pakistan’s nuclear facilities.

China helped Pakistan at the time when there was a stringent export controls in western countries, and was difficult for Pakistan to acquire materials and technology elsewhere.

China has always assisted Pakistan with warfares as it considers Pakistan an important ally against India.

The Chinese assistance to Pakistan can be explained by a balance of power: India is China’s enemy and Pakistan is India’s enemy,” Reed added. (ANI)

No change in Pak attitude since 26/11, India asks it to act

By Praful Kumar Singh

New Delhi, Jan. 2 (ANI): India today again asked Pakistan to act against the perpetrators of the Mumbai carnage, and said that action is important to prove that Islamabad has taken a tough stand against terror outfits operating from its soil.

Defence Minister A. K. Antony said this on the sidelines of the centenary celebration of Sainik Samachar, the journal of the Indian armed forces. He also released a coffee table book “Soldering On”, which chronicles the history of the defence forces over the past 100 years.

“Statements are not important, actions are important. I don’t see any noticeable change in attitude of Pakistan. They have to prove by their actions, and when more than 30 terror outfits are operating, how can I say that there is a change in the stance of Pakistan,” Antony.

“We have to be ready and our armed forces are doing their duty. They are not lowering their guard and are in the state of full preparedness to meet any threat from any quarter,” the Defence Minister added.

Commenting on the Pakistani demand for redeployment of troops in order to bring down tensions between the two neighbours, Antony said: “We are not escalating the issue. We must be prepared to face any eventuality.”

“The armed forces are not escalating anything and, there are no troops movement from our side and exercise, which is taking place on the border, is a normal thing,” he said.

The Defence Minister also refused to give any time frame for Pakistan to act against the people behind the Mumbai terror attacks, saying “There is not time limit, but only thing is that Pakistan must act.”

Antony wished that year 2009 would be a better and happy year for India and its people, and cautioned: “We have to be always alert. We cannot relax anytime and we must not lower our guards. We have to be fully prepared to face any threat on eastern or western border.” (ANI)

London folk musician dies after inhaling anthrax from animal skin

London folk musician dies after inhaling anthrax from animal skinLondon – Health officials in Britain were Monday examining the death of a drum-maker who inhaled anthrax spores while handling imported animal skin.

Spanish-born Fernando Gomez, 35, died in hospital late Sunday after being taken ill a week ago.

His flat and workshop in Hackney, east London, have been sealed off by the Health Protection Agency (HPA) for examination.

Seven other people who had been in the room where the skins were prepared were given antibiotics as a precautionary measure, and the HPA said nobody else had developed any symptoms.

HPA chief adviser Nigel Lightfoot said the agency was keen to stress that all individuals who made drums from imported animal skins were at risk of coming into contact with anthrax and should ensure that they were taking the necessary precautions.

Jules Pipe, the mayor of Hackney, said, “This is an extremely rare case and this type of anthrax cannot be passed from person to person.”

The last death of this kind in Britain was in 2006 when Christopher Norris, a maker of musical instruments, died after inhaling anthrax.

An official health report published in December said it was likely Norris, 50, had contracted the illness after playing or handling anthrax-contaminated West African drums at a drumming workshop. (dpa)
